Summer is the season for
outdoor activities in
warm temperatures and
long days. As people ventureoutside to enjoy their favorite
summer pastimes, extremely
high temperatures can affect
the bodys ability to keep
cool. People over age 65 are
at a particularly high risk for
suffering a heat-related ill-
ness. Thus, it is especially
important for senior citizens
to keep cool in the summer
heat. Here are some ways
how:
1. Seek an air-conditioned
environment. If your home is
not air-conditioned, visit an
air-conditioned shopping
mall, movie theater or public
library to cool off.
2. Plan outdoor activities in
the morning when it is cool-
er. It is important to mini-
mize direct exposure to thesun as much as possible.
Therefore, all outdoor activi-
ties should be planned for
early mornings when it is
cooler and the sun is less
harsh. As much as possible,
use the shaded areas under
trees or covered porches.
3. Take a cool shower, bath,
or sponge bath. Heat stroke is
the most serious heat-related
illness and occurs when the
body becomes unable to con-trol its temperature. When
the bodys temperature rises
too fast, the body loses its
ability to sweat and is unable
to cool down. The most relax-
ing way to cool down your
bodys temperature is to take a
nice, long, cool shower or
bath.
4. Stay hydrated. Seniors
should avoid caffeine and
alcoholic beverages as much
as possible as they accelerate
dehydration. Drinking plain
water is great, but may not be
adequate as the body also
loses sodium and potassium
salts through sweating.Popular sports drinks taste
great and are an effective way
to replenish the bodys loss of
sodium.
5. Dress appropriately.
Everyone, especially seniors,
should wear light-colored,
loose-fitting, cool materials
(preferably cotton) and use
head coverings like hats or
caps. As seniors skin is sensi-
tive, they should use high SPF
sun blocks (30+) and avoid
direct sun as much as possible
by seeking out shaded spots.

There are three general
approaches:
-Whitening toothpastes
(dentifrices)-At-home bleaching
-Over-the-counter
whitening strips
-Over-the-counter whitening gels
-Over-the-counter tray-based
bleaching systems (purchased at
your local drug store, over the
Internet, by mail)
- Dentist supervised tray-based
whitening system (whitenin
supplies are purchased through
your dentists office)-In-office bleaching, also called
chairside bleaching or power
bleaching
Whitening Toothpastes:
All toothpastes help
remove surface stainsthrough the action of
mild abrasives. Some
whitening toothpastes
contain gentle polishing
or chemical agents that
provide additional stain
removal effectiveness.
Whitening toothpastes can
help remove surface stains
only and do not contain
bleach; over-the-counter and
professional whitening prod-ucts contain hydrogen perox-
ide (a bleaching substance)
that helps remove stains on
the tooth surface as well as
stains deep in the tooth. None
of the home use whitening
toothpastes can come even
close to producing the bleach-
ing effect you get from your
dentists office. Whitening
toothpastes can lighten your
tooths color by about oneshade. In contrast, light-acti-
vated whitening conducted in
your dentists office can make
your teeth three to eight
shades lighter.
Whitening Strips and
Whitening Gels:
Whitening gels are clear,
peroxide-based gels applied
with a small brush directly to
the surface of your teeth.
Instructions generally call for
twice a day application for 14days. Initial results are seen in
a few days and final results are
sustained for about 4 months.
The retail cost for this product
is about $15 for a 14-day treat-
ment.
Whitening strips are very
thin, virtually invisible strips
that are coated with a perox-
ide-based whitening gel. The
strips are applied twice daily
for 30 minutes for 14 days.Initial results are seen in a few
days and final results are sus-
Teeth whitening
options By Peter Brusco, DMD
What many jewelers
consider custom
work is ordering a
raw casting from a catalog and
then setting a customers loose
stones into it. While this is
definitely part of what anyjeweler does (including
Boston Louis), it is essentially
remodeling by using another
companys stock design.
Where we differ from the
average jeweler is through our
use of custom wax design. An
original concept is cut into
wax, and then molded into
precious metals to create a
new piece of jewelry.
Wax models can be madeby the traditional method of
having a sculpting artist cut a
design directly into wax, but
the modern method uses com-
puter-aided design (CAD)
technology. While we doboth, CAD uniquely allows us
to completely create a design
on the computer where we
can see that design three-
dimensionally from every
angle.
After a CAD design or
hand-carved wax is completed
and approved by the client,
we next cast the item in gold
or platinum using the lost
wax process. Co-owner LouisBuddy Mazzo is a fourth-
generation jewelry caster still
operating his familys jewelry
casting factory. Theres a
huge advantage when you can
control nearly every aspect of
the production, he said.
Co-owner Ken Boston
recounts a situation where
they had created a design
exactly to their customers
expectations. The ring was asurprise for the clients wife
and therefore they couldnt
take into consideration how
small her fingers were. When
the original wax was tried on
her finger, it totally over-whelmed her hand.
Whats cool about CAD
designing is that we just
shrunk the design 30 percent
on the computer and then
remade the wax model. The
ring now fits like a glove,
Boston said.
If you have a unique
engagement ring and cant
find a wedding ring to match
it, or if you have a design inyour mind that youve spent
years unsuccessfully trying to
find in a store or online, let us
help you realize that design
through CAD.

tained for about 4 months.
The retail cost for this product
ranges from $10 to $55 for a
14-day treatment.
Both of these products
contain peroxide in a concen-
tration that is much lower
than the peroxide-based prod-
ucts that are used in your den-
tists office. Although some
teeth lightening will be
achieved, the degree of
whitening is much lower than
results achieved with in-office
or dentist-supervised whiten-
ing systems. Additionally, use
of over-the-counter products
do not benefit from the close
supervision of your dentist to
determine what whitening
process may be best for you, to
check on the progress of the
teeth whitening process and
look for signs of gum irrita-
tion. On the positive, the
over-the-counter gels and
strips are considerably less
expense (ranging from $10 to
about $55) than the top-of-the line in-office whitening
procedures, which can cost
nearly $800.
Tray-Based Tooth
Whitening
Procedures:
For the more
traditional types
of teeth whitening
procedures using
tray-based tooth
whitening systems
purchased over-
the-counter or through your
dentists office, the first step
involves filling a mouth
guard-like tray with a gel-like
whitening solution which
contains a peroxide-bleaching
agent. This tray is then placed
over the teeth and worn for a
period of time, generally from
a couple hours a day or every
day during the overnight for
up to 4 weeks and even longer
(depending on the degree of
staining and desired level of
whitening).
Bleaching procedures
performed in the dentists
office involve a few different
or additional steps, namely, that a protective gel or guard
is positioned over the gums
before the bleaching agent is
applied, the bleaching agent is
applied directly to the teeth,
and the whitening process is
hastened with the use of heat,
a special light, or laser light
that is directed at the chemi-
cally coated teeth. There are
other differences that are
addressed in the next issue.

took a turn for the
worse several years
ago, many families had to cut
costs in order to make ends
meet. For many families, that
meant leaving vacations on
the cutting room floor. While
the economy has rebounded,
uncertainty surrounding that
comeback has prevailed for
many families, who remain
hesitant to book a traditional
vacation for fear of spending
money they might be better
off saving.
The sacrifice of tradi-
tional vacations has led many
families to embrace the stay-
cation, wherein families still
take time off to be with one
another but do so largely at
home rather than heading off
to an exotic locale or resort. A
staycation is a great way for
families to rediscover their
own communities and spend
quality time together without
the hustle and bustle of air-
ports or interstates. Families
who still find themselves hesi-
tant to commit to a more tra-
ditional vacation can heed
the following tips to ensure
their staycation is a success.
Go out to dinner. Part of
the fun of a family vacation is
getting to enjoy some nights
out on the town. But even if
youre not straying far from
home this year, you can still
enjoy the cuisine your com-
munity has to offer. Dine out a
few nights during your time
off, making sure to enjoy a few
different restaurants instead of
relying on one your family fre-
quents throughout the year.
Dining out on a weeknight
will create the feel of a more
traditional vacation, and you
might just find a new restau-
rant you and your family love
and can revisit in the years to
come.
Absorb the local culture.
The daily grind has a way of
making life hectic, and
chances are you and your fam-
ily dont get to enjoy your own
communitys culture through-
out the year. Take advantage
of the time afforded you by
your staycation to soak up all
the culture and recreational
activities your community has
to offer. Visit nearby muse-
ums, take in a performance at
your local theater or explore a
nearby park, be it for a day of
hiking or a more laid back pic-
nic in the sun. This can help
everyone reacquaint them-
selves with the reasons you
chose to settle down in your
community.
Go camping. Just because
youre having a staycation
doesnt mean you have to stay
home. Spend a few nights
away from home by taking the
family on a camping trip. The
fee to stay at a nearby camp-
site is negligible when com-
pared to the cost of hotel
rooms for an entire family, and
you wont spend nearly as
much on food because youll
need to bring your own to the
campsite. Camp during the
week instead of on the week-
ends, and you might have
more of the campground to
yourself.
Head for the beach. In its
National Coastal Population
Report examining population
trends from 1970 to 2020, the
National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration
found that 39 percent of the
United States population
lived in counties directly on
the shoreline. Make time to
visit the beach on your stayca-
tion, and you might be able to
recreate the feeling of a more
traditional getaway with some
sand between your toes and
the sound of waves crashing
on the shorelines.
Staycations have become
a staple for families looking to
avoid expensive resort vaca-
tions. But staying close to
home can still be just as fun as
traveling abroad. Here are
some suggestions for day trips.

T
he grasshopper plays all
day while his friend the
ant labors to store sup-
plies for the winter. The out-
come is predictable. The
grasshopper isnt bad merely
foolish. The ant is a fully vested
member of a community. Its the
competitive and cooperative
models juxtaposed.
But lets look deeper.
People will ask, Why do bad
things happen to good people?
Nobody asks why good things
happen to good people.
Likewise, nobody gets upset
when a bad person encounters
misfortune.
The bottom line is that
things happen as a direct result
of the decisions we make, as well
as our actions. Everything we do
influences the world and people
around us. Sure, were influ-
enced by forces beyond our con-
trol, but is that because they are
beyond our capability to influ-
ence or is it because of our fail-
ure to plan and act? I cant con-
trol the weather but I can
buy an umbrella to avoid getting
wet.
Many people feel theyre
entitled. An empowered person
recognizes the only thing were
entitled to is to make our own
decisions and with that, we
must accept responsibility for
the outcome of those decisions.

Dog owners are typical-
ly bewildered when
mans best friend
exhibits destructive or disrup-
tive behavior. Chewing furni-
ture or urinating and defecat-
ing indoors is upsetting for dog
owners, who might feel they
need to discipline their pooch
to ensure it does not happen
again. But discipline might not
be the remedy for destructive
or disruptive behavior, which
might be a sign of separation
anxiety.
Separation anxiety can
occur when a dog is upset after
it is separated from its owner or
other members of the house-
hold. Dogs may become agitat-
ed or depressed when their
owners are getting ready to
leave for the day or the pets
may begin barking within min-
utes of their owner leaving.
Upon the owners return, the
dog might behave as if their
owner was gone for days and
days.
Understanding separation
anxiety can help dog owners
and their dogs overcome the
condition, which can be over-
whelming for dogs.
What are the symptoms of
separation anxiety?
Destructive or disruptive
behavior is not always a
byproduct of separation anxi-
ety. However, the following
symptoms may indicate separa-
tion anxiety.
Urinating or defecating while
no one is home: Dogs who uri-
nate or defecate when left
home alone might be suffering
from separation anxiety. If a
dog does this in the presence of
its owner, then chances are it
has not been trained properly
and is not suffering from sepa-
ration anxiety.
Destructive behavior: Door
frames, furniture, window sills
and other objects around the
house are common chewing
targets for dogs suffering from
separation anxiety. Such
behavior is done while owners
are away, and it can harm the
dog, causing damage to its
nails, paws and teeth.
Escape attempts: Some dogs
dealing with separation anxi-
ety may try to escape from
their confines when left alone.
Dogs might attempt to dig or
chew through doors. When a
dog has separation anxiety, its
escape attempts are limited to
those times when it is separat-
ed from its owner.
Coprophagia: Some dogs suf-
fering from separation anxiety
will defecate and then con-
sume some or all of their excre-
ment.
Why do dogs develop separa-
tion anxiety?
The ASPCA notes that
there is no conclusive evidence
as to why dogs develop separa-
tion anxiety. But the organiza-
tion also notes that dogs adopt-
ed from shelters tend to exhib-
it behaviors associated with
separation anxiety more than
dogs who are with the same
owner since birth, suggesting
that dogs might feel a sense of
abandonment when their
owner leaves for the day, simi-
lar to the abandonment they
felt when their initial owners
or someone else
brought them to the
shelter.
Those feelings of
abandonment may be
triggered by certain
situations, such as
when a dog gets a new
owner, the dogs
schedule changes or the family
moves to a new residence. In
addition, when a member of
the household is suddenly
absent, whether that person
has passed away or moved out,
then this absence may also
trigger separation anxiety.
How can a dog with separa-
tion anxiety be helped?
Helping a dog cope with
separation anxiety involves
teaching the dog to enjoy or
learn to tolerate its time alone.
But before that can be done,
the ASPCA advises dog own-
ers to visit their veterinarian to
rule out other medical issues
with similar symptoms. The
aforementioned symptoms of
separation anxiety might be
indicative of a different med-
ical issue and the vet can
determine if thats the case
before dog owners go forward
with treating separation anxi-
ety. Once the vet has ruled out
other medical issues, then dog
owners can consider the fol-
lowing ways to help their dog
cope with its anxiety.
Associate being alone
with something good. A dog
suffering from separation anxi-
ety associates being alone with
a negative. If dog owners can
turn that negative association
into a positive one, then the
dogs condition might improve.
When leaving the house, give
the dog a treat or a food-dis-
pensing toy so it associates
your departure with something

Creating a walkway or
patio out of paving
stones can add aes-
thetic appeal to a property.
Pavers are less permanent
than concrete and decking.
As a result, it is easier to
change the design later on if
you want to give the space a
new look.
Homeowners who
install their own pavers can
save a considerable amount
of money. Because installing
paving stones can be labor-
intensive, landscape contrac-
tors may charge a premium
for installation. However,
this is a project that can be
tackled by the do-it-your-
selfer.
1. Measure and plot out the
area that will become the
path or patio. The area of the
space can be figured out by
multiplying length times
width. This will help you
determine just how much
material you will need.
2. Visit the home improve-
ment store or a supplier of
stone and other masonry sup-
plies to determine the style
and color of the paving
stones you will use in the
project. Some homeowners
prefer to have the materials
delivered to their home to
save the hassle of extra heavy
lifting and moving.
3. Using a shovel or a tiller,
dig down and remove the
grass to a depth of four to six
inches from the area that will

The backyard has
become a go-to desti-nation for warm
weather recreation. As the
staycation has grown in pop-
ularity, more effort has been
put forth in making the back-
yard a place where all mem-
bers of the household can
enjoy themselves. That means
merging interests into one
space. A pool may be compet-
ing for acreage along with a
decorative patch of lawn. Some homeowners wonder if
lawns and pools can be suc-
cessful alongside each other.
Many question if chlori-
nated pool water poses any ill
effects on the grass in the
backyard. In addition to
splash-out of water during fun
times in the pool, water also
will be tracked across the lawn
from children and adults exit-
ing the pool or will flood the
grass when it is necessary to
clean and backwash the fil-ter. Will you be left with a
dried-out patch of chlorine-
burnt lawn? Probably not.
Healthy chlorine levels
in a pool are kept so that the
pool water is generally on par
with the chlorine levels con-
tained in regular tap water.
You wouldnt hesitate turning
on the hose to water your
lawn, so you shouldnt be over-
ly concerned about pool watersplashing out of the pool, par-
ticularly if you are stringent
about maintaining the proper
pH levels and chlorine levels.
Also, soil can withstand chlo-
rine at high acid levels and is
pretty resilient about self-cor-
recting. Furthermore, grass
blades are selective about
which nutrients they absorb,
so excess chlorine will likely
not penetrate the grass blades.
Chlorine also dissipates
in the sun. Therefore, whilethe levels may be elevated
upon just hitting the grass,
over a short while the chlorine
will essentially be used up and
pose no additional threat to
the surrounding lawn.
Some people have actual-
ly said that watering your lawn
with pool water can be an eco-
friendly way of curbing water
usage. Therefore, it may be
safely used on lawns and mostflowering plants. It is unadvis-
able to water vegetable gar-
dens with pool water because
of any trace levels of other
chemicals that may be foundin the pool water.
Homeowners still con-
cerned about exposing their
lawns to pool water can create
a buffer zone around the pool.
In-ground pools are tradition-
ally bordered by concrete or
patio blocks. Place stone or
mulch around the perimeter of
an above-ground pool to catch
any splashes and to create a
barrier between the pool andthe lawn. Also, direct back-
washed water through a long
tube and have it flow it to an
area away from the lawn.Pool owners who want to
have vibrant grass likely dont
need to worry about chlorine
damaging their lawns. In fact, the lawns may flourish with
the extra watering.

Burgers are a staple of
easy living. They can
be enjoyed at lunch,
dinner or even served minia-
ture as hors doeuvres.
Relatively easy to whip up,
burgers are also a go-to meal
when time is short but every-
one is hungry.
Though burgers are sim-
ple to create and even easier
to love, over time the sameold burger recipe might need
to be spiced up a little. Burgers
can be modified with the addi-
tion of different toppings, but
for home cooks who want a
burger that is different from
the inside out, they may want
to go back to the culinary
drawing board.
Experimenting with fla-
vors can help you to create an
entirely new burger that is afar cry from the cheese- and
bacon-topped standard. For
example, using flavors
inspired from the Tuscan hill-
side can breathe new life into
burgers. Consider this recipe
for Tasty Tuscan Burgers and
modify as necessary to whet
your appetite.
Tasty Tuscan Burgers
Makes 4 servings
11/2 pounds ground pork or
turkey (a white meat works
best with the other flavors)
1/3 cup grated parmesan
cheese or pecorino romano
1/3 cup Italian-seasoned bread-
crumbs
1 cup thinly chopped or gratedzucchini
1 to 2 plum tomatoes, chopped
8 freshly chopped basil leaves
or a teaspoon of prepared pesto
4 slices fresh mozzarella
4 slices red onion
4 leaves romaine lettuce
4 medium ciabatta rolls, split
and lightly toasted
Salt and pepper
Garlic aioli garnish (recipe fol-
lows)Mix together the ground
meat, zucchini, breadcrumbs,
grated cheese, tomatoes, and
basil leaves together in a bowl.
Season with salt and pepper to
taste. Divide mixture into four

apples (about 5 apples) cored
and sliced (unpeeled)3 tablespoons freshly squeezed
lemon juice
1 cup water
3/4 cup sugar
Fresh mint sprigs for garnish
Toss the apple slices with
the juice, slip into a lock-top
plastic bag, and freeze until
firm, about 1 hour.
Combine the water and
sugar in a small saucepan and
bring to a boil, stirring to dis-solve the sugar. Cook until the
syrup is clear. Remove from
the heat and let cool to room
temperature. Transfer to a
container, cover and refriger-
ate until thoroughly chilled,
about 3 hours.
In a food processor, blend
the frozen apples and syrup
just until light and fluffy.Serve at once in chilled gob-
lets and garnish with mint
sprigs. Or, transfer to a con-
tainer, cover and freeze until
firm, about 2 hours.

People take many differ-
ent steps to stay coolwhen the temperatures
rise. A particularly common
method to remaining comfort-
able is turning up the air con-
ditioning and staying indoors.
But what about the people
who want to be cool and enjoy
fresh air as well? Shade trees
could be their best alliesagainst the sweltering temper-
atures.
Most individuals will
agree that it feels much cooler
under a shade tree than it does
when standing in direct sun-
light. The nonprofit organiza-
tion Trees Forever says the dif-
ference in temperature read-ings can be monumental. In
2010, roughly 20 volunteers
worked with the organization
to compare the actual temper-
ature of shaded and un-shaded
surfaces around a county fair-
ground in Iowa. The volun-
teers used laser thermometers
and took readings from sur-faces such as sidewalks, park-
ing lots and grassy lawn areas.
The volunteers found differ-
ences in temperature ranging
from 14 to 55o F depending
on the surface measured.
Thats a considerable differ-
ence and could help a person
remain cool.Trees are a practical way
to stay cool and are an energy-
saving means to keep temper-
atures down. Planting trees
around a property can reduce
reliance on air-conditioning
systems, saving a person
money while reducing
dependency on fuel sources.Other live vegetation, includ-
ing grass and yard plants, can
also promote an overall cool-
ing effect, compared to hard-
scape surfaces that radiate
heat.

Numer ous vari etie s of
trees can serve as shade trees. These are typically deciduous
trees that will have leaves
during the warm-weather
months and then shed them
when the cooler seasons
arise. However, some ever-
greens and tropical trees also
work well as shade producers
in and around a landscape.
American Arborvitae: Thisslow-growing evergreen is
typically used to create tall
hedges and privacy screens.
It also offers year-round mod-
erate to deep shade when the
trees reach maximum height
of 25 to 40 feet.
American Beech: This tree
offers shade and also edible
nuts. It can grow up to 100feet in fertile, well-draining
soils.
Autumn Blaze Maples:
These trees are known for
their outstanding fall foliage.
However, they also are fast-
growing shade trees that can
cool down any landscape.
Bald Cyprus: The fern-like
leaves of this tree providemoderate shade. This cyprus
is low-maintenance and has
few problems with insects or
disease.
Chinese Elm: This rapid-
growing tree is excellent for
screening or providing a
windbreak. Small, dense
foliage will fill in about five
years, when it will be goodfor shade.
Crepe Myrtle Tree: Myrtles
are fast-growing shade trees
in southern climates. In
northern climates, they may
grow more like a perennial
shrub.
Little-leaf Linden: This is a
fragrant tree that blooms
with yellow flowers in earlysummer. The dense foliage
will remain on the tree into
late fall.
Moraine Locust: This tree
is cold-hardy and can with-
stand urban conditions. It is
