BARKLY Shire Council andcommunity members have of-fered to pay for operation coststo switch the Tennant Creekweather radar back on after anonslaught of flooding in theBarkly caused chaos and un-certainty.
Tennant Creek electricianMike Nash said the groupmade the proposal with the NTCattlemen’s Association(NTCA) on the weekend, daysafter heavy floodwaters cre-ated road blocks on the StuartHwy 70km south of the town.
Mr Nash, a spokesman forthe weather radar campaign,said a Tennant Creek womantravelling to the Alice Springs
Hospital had to make a detourto Camooweal Queensland,470km away, to avoid floods.
He said the woman couldhave travelled the shorterroute earlier, before flood-waters blocked traffic, if theradar was still operational.
The radar provided updatedinformation about rain andsevere storms online in realtime every 10 minutes.
Mr Nash said road workers atGilbert Swamp on the StuartHwy were also bogged in thefloods because they had no wayof knowing they needed to packup their equipment in timewithout the radar.
‘‘Even Father Christmas wasin strife because he had no idea
what to expect. He found it verydifficult to navigate,’’ he said.
Mr Nash said the group inter-ested in running or leasing outoperations of the weatherradar would also consider mak-ing a bid to purchase the fa-cility. ‘‘It is an asset for us butit’s (the bureau’s) liability, sothey should be happy to get ridof it.’’
He was unsure how muchoperations would cost but said‘‘we don’t believe it’s thatmuch’’.
NTCA executive directorLuke Bowen said that switch-ing off the radar had created ablack hole in the 250,000sq kmstretch of land across theBarkly Shire.

AN environment organis-ation has accused threebeverage giants of at-tempting to ‘‘scare off’’states and territories fromadopting a container de-posit scheme by taking theNT Government to court.
Alice Springs’s AridLands EnvironmentCentre co-ordinatorJimmy Cocking said Coca-Cola Amatil, SchweppesAustralia and Lion PtyLtd were using the legalchallenge as ‘‘an example’’to stop other states fromrolling the scheme out.
The Federal Court hear-ing in Sydney in February2013 wil l determinewhether the scheme,which offers a 10c incen-tive to deposit empty con-tainers at a deposit centre,is legally valid.
The scheme could beseen as illegal to run oncethe NT Government’sexemption from laws thatprevent governmentsfrom mandating packagelabel requirements expireson January 3, 2013.
The NT Government iscurrently applying for apermanent exemptionf r o m t h e C o m m o n -wealth’s Mutual Recog-nition Act 1992, whichcould take at least threemonths.

Chief Minister TerryMills said the AustralianFood and Grocery Councilassured him that manu-facturers would reduceconsumer prices on bever-ages if the scheme getsscrapped.
He said this price re-duction would reflect a cutto costs that were passedon to consumers by bever-age companies under thescheme.
Mr Mills said the Gov-ernment would dismantlethe scheme if the courtdeemed it invalid.
But Greens SenatorScott Ludlam said the Actwould not prevent a stateor territory-based con-tainer deposit systemfrom continuing to run.
‘‘The company is actingout of cynical self-interestand drawing an extremelylong bow here,’’ he said.
More than 18.6 millioncontainers have beenrecycled in the Territoryunder the scheme since itcame into effect on Janu-ary 3, 2012.
Coca-Cola Amatil didnot respond to requestsfor comment.
