HISTORICAL NOTES:
This is a former late Victorian/ Edwardian brick built
isolation hospital, hence the country location to the west of
the urban areas, away from their smoke and pollution, and
providing light and exercise in the sheltered internal area,
where beds could be rolled out in good weather.
The wards have been converted to provide luxury modern
accommodation.
Streetbridge is a reference to Roman occupation of the
area, as “straight” roads were unusual in the so-called
“Dark Ages” after the Romans left Britain. Such roads were
called “street”, that is straight, so Streetbridge was where
the Roman road crossed the river Irk somewhere in the
area near here.
“Racefield” is a reference to early water powered cotton
mills which were situated along the Irk in the second half of
the 18c – The field of the “race”, that is the supply run off
the river for the mill’s water wheel.
