Too drunkto speak

Peter Doyle from St.Mary’s Villas is a 36-year-old man with learning dif-ficulties who is facing astring of charges includ-ing arson, harassment,making hoax calls andassault dating back to2004.

Doyle was last beforethe court last month butthe case was put backuntil September 2 toallow Gardaí completetheir investigations. Onthat date Judge Donn-chadh O Buachallawarned Doyle that if hecame before him again inthe meantime, the defen-dant would be going tojail.

This week, Doyle was

brought before the courtfollowing two new alle-gations of causing abreach of the peace inCarrigduff and St. Mary’sVillas on July 6 and June25 respectively. Doyledenied the charges,shouting in court that hewas not in those areas onthe dates mentioned.

Gda. Mary O’Ryan saidthe defendant replied “notguilty” when he wascharged and told the courtthat these fresh chargesmeant that Doyle hadbreached very strict bailconditions one of whichincluded not going nearCarrigduff. Gda. O’Ryanmade an application toremand the defendant in

custody.John O’Leary was

assigned as solicitor forDoyle as his regular solici-tor John Mernagh was notin court. Garda Dan Whe-lan of Bunclody Garda sta-tion told the Judge that thebehaviour seen in courtwas typical of what goeson in Bunclody.

Doyle disrupted thecourt interrupting the Gar-daí giving evidence and attimes walking out of thecourt shouting as he went.Finally three Gardaí had torestrain him and placedhandcuffs on him.

Doyle’s father was alsoin court and told the Judgethat these recent chargescame about because of

allegations made againsthis son, which he claimedwere untrue. Mr. O’Learysaid his client says he isabiding by the strict bailconditions imposed at aprevious sitting of thecourt.

Gda. Whelan replied tothe Judge by saying hewould see Doyle in Carrig-duff almost every day.Peter Doyle was alsoassaulted in Bunclody lastyear after he pushed awoman claiming she hadthrown eggs at his win-dow.

The Judge remanded thedefendant in custody untiltoday when all mattersbefore the court will bedealt with.

A MAN found unable to speak andlying on a footpath had been givenfour months to prove he would notget in any more trouble.

Sergejs Saroks with an address on Weafer Street,Enniscorthy, pleaded guilty to the two charges beforehim at Enniscorthy District Court this week. He wascharged with being drunk in public and having a knifein his possession without reasonable excuse.

On February 16, Garda Karen Burke received a callabout a man lying on the street on Spout Lane inEnniscorthy. When she arrived at the scene sheobserved the defendant lying on the footpath. He wasvery drunk and incapable of speaking.

Gda. Burke brought Saroks back to EnniscorthyGarda Station where she searched him and found ablue penknife on his person. The court heard the 44-year-old had 35 previous convictions mostly for pub-lic-order offences.

Catriona Walsh, solicitor for the defendant, said herclient was currently not drinking and was attendingAlcoholics Anonymous meetings. Judge DonnchadhO Buachalla adjourned the case until October 7 to seeif Saroks would come to the attention of the Gardaí inthe meantime.
