STOCK MARKET REPORT
The PSEi reached new highs twice in July before ending the month at 5,307.66points, higher by 1.2% or 61.25 points from the previous months close. Thebenchmark index hit a fresh record of 5,369.98 on 05 July 2012 following thePhilippines credit rating upgradereceived from Standard & Poors. The marketsupbeat performance was also supported by the Monetary Boards decision to cutpolicy rates in order to further boost economic growth. As of end-July, the PSEiwas up by 21.4% or 935.70 points from the 2011 closing level.
Four of the six sector indices advanced during the month, led by the propertyindex which rose by 3.7% month-on-month. The services, financials, andindustrial indices followed with 2.2%, 1.2%, and 0.9%, respectively. The miningand oil index dropped by 3.9%, while the holding firms index fell by 0.3%. Thebroader all-share index meanwhile added 1.5% or 50.46 points to finish at3,503.30 points.
Trading activity in July was robust as the total value turnover reached P156.54billion, a 30.2% increase from the P120.25 billion total value turnover posted ayear ago. However, this was a decline of 9.3% from P172.52 billion in June.The average daily value turnover for the month amounted to P7.12 billion,24.3% more than the P5.73 billion a year ago. From January to July, the totalvalue of trades reached P1.10 trillion, while the average daily value turnoverstood at P7.56 billion.
Foreign investors were net buyers in July as foreign funds that flowed into themarket amounted to P21.46 billion, 41.4% lower from the P36.60 billion netforeign buying in the previous month. This was however 125.1% greater thanthe P9.53 billion net foreign buying recorded year-on-year. Foreign tradesaccounted for 42.5% of market activity. As of end-July, foreign transactionsnetted a buy of P92.58 billion, a 281.3% expansion from P24.28 billion in thesame period last year.
The consolidated net income of listed companies jumped by 24.0% to P134.66billion in the first quarter from P108.60 billion in the same period last year.Listed companies in the financial sector posted the highest net income growth at73.2%, followed by those in the industrial, property, and holding firms sectors at31.9%, 25.1%, and 22.7%, respectively. Meanwhile, the listed companies in themining and oil and services sectors saw their respective net incomes drop by25.7% and 8.2%. For the period, revenues of listed companies aggregated P1.02trillion, 18.9% more than the P858.34 billion last year.
