The Seventies of the past century could be considered asfoundation years of many of the European horse societies, but

also most of the activities how to use and to show registeredArabian horses started at that time.

These were the years of experiments how to conduct a propershow and how to present the Arabian horse in front of thepublic.

Some elements of these activities were taken from the existingEuropean horsemanship, others crossed over from the US intothe European Arabian Community. The major European shows,like the Salon du Cheval in Paris, the Show in Aachen, the longstanding National Shows in England, like Ascot or Snowdon.Many other smaller national shows in several countries havetheir origin in these years. Different judging systems were prac-tised: The competitive method, as it is popular in England, the10-point-system mostly practised on the European continent, orthe new surprising Swedish point-system.

In summary, many ideas, a lot of courage and goodwill wereinvested, but at the same time these activities looked for an out-sider like a great confusion, and it was difficult to find a properorientation.

On the occasion of a WAHO Conference in Calgary in 1982group of European representatives came together and were dis-cussing the necessity to bring a proper order into this confusingsituation, since each show and each system claimed to be thebest and the most proper one. In fact, this meeting was, in prin-ciple, the beginning of the later founded ECAHO, and even thebasic principles and headlines of the ECAHO-system were alrea-dy fixed at that time.

1. There should be a show pyramid (A- B- and C-shows)

2. There should be one judging system applicable for all showsin order to make results comparable

3. Each show should run under a disciplinary system in order tostop unwanted methods to show and to handle the horses.

4. There should be a third big important new show for Europeanhorses only.

These items were just headlines. They had to be worked out. Infollowing meetings, as in Germany (Ströhen), in Switzerland(Frauenfeld) and later on in Germany again (Hamburg) detailswere discussed and finally rules were fixed and presented to allEuropean horse associations for their approval. This new orga-nisation was then named "ECAHO”.

As mentioned above, the Nation Cup and the Championnat deMonde in Paris were already well accepted shows with the con-sequence that these shows, due to their importance, should be

considered as A-shows and the European Championship wouldbe added as a third A-show.

Very soon arguments started as to who would have the finalword in these two existing A-shows. The Paris Show was run bya French organisation and the Nation Cup by its own committee.Both requested a certain independency from the ECAHO autho-rities, however they were willing to apply most of the ECAHO-rules, but not in every detail, whereby the choice of the judgeswas the biggest argument. Even when there were such argu-ments still 1984, the Nation Cup was celebrated in Germany. In1985 the Nation Cup was held in Frauenfeld, very well managedby the Swiss Breeding organisation and with much success forthe Spanish team. Sooner or later the Salon du Cheval and theECAHO Board found an appropriate understanding. However,between the Nation Cup Committee and the ECAHO nothingseems to work easily for a long time.

The idea of the Nation Cup was developed by Major Ian andAnnette Hedley from Briery Close Arabian Stud in England; rela-tively quickly this idea found a lot of support. Many active bree-ders approved of this new proposal and a large board was crea-ted to make this kind of show a reality.

This show was meant to travel from country to country; conse-quently, the Nation Cup was already carried out in England, inSpain, in Sweden, in Switzerland and then Germany was on thelist, just at the time when the new ECAHO organisation cameinto life. It was the strong opinion of the Nation Cup Board thattheir show would be an "All Nation Cup”, open to all horsesworld-wide and not limited to Europe. Therefore this Nation Cupshould maintain its own authority.

Such arguments went on for some years, and at a certain pointthe ECAHO boarddecided to make it very difficult for the NationCup to travel. In fact, practically all countries were closed up tohost this show. Under such circumstances the Nation Cup Board,composed of Annette Hedley, Dorothy Stream, Dorothy Wrigleyand Dr. Hans-Joachim Nagel came to the conclusion that it

would be better to change policy and to hold the Nation Cupalways at the same place and at the same time of the year.People would get used to local environment, like hotels and travelling services as well as to the stable facilities and showground for the horses. Aachen was considered to be the mostconvenient place. It offered all facilities for a good show and waseasy to be reached from the major Arabian horse breeding coun-tries at that time, like Holland, Belgium, France, Denmark,England etc. Consequently, the German Arab Horse Society(VZAP) was asked if they were prepared to carry out this NationCup under this new concept. The two parties fond a satisfyingcontractual arrangement and Germany gave the consent withthe understanding that Aachen would be, from now on, thelocation where the Nation Cup would be carried out every year.Even if this arrangement did not amuse the ECAHO Board at all,the show was announced and became a brilliant success.Judges from outside of Europe came to assist, and the ring andevery show class of the show were filled up with many beautifulhorses.

Several shows followed year by year in a strained situation, butfinally in 1989 a still on-going dialogue between the Nation Cupand the Management Board ended in a good compromise and,from now on, the status of the Nation Cup as an A-show underthe ECAHO-rules was not in question any more. The major rulesof ECAHO were applied in this show anyhow, and it was not toodifficult to leave the choice of the judges in the hands of theNation Cup Committee.

Today, the Nation Cup is presented in Aachen every year on thelast week-end in September. The German Arab Association(VZAP) gained all the experience in management and executionof this event, and it became one of the most accepted establish-ment in the Arabian horse show scenery world-wide. Every yearabout 150 - 200 horses from all parts of the world whereArabian horse breeding is practised travel to Aachen to paradein the show ring, and the world’s top judges are selecting thebest of them.The nation which can present most of the horses as winners andcollected the highest score will, at the end of show, be awardedwith the Nation Cup. This cup is donated by the "Daily MailNewspaper” in London, and, in the early years, it was handedover to the winning nation by Lady Harmsworth-Blunt, the granddam in Arabian horse breeding and well-known in the publis-hing world.

When Lady Harmsworth-Blunt passed away, the Nation CupTrophy was changed into the "Lady Harmsworth Blunt MemorialTrophy” and is now handed over to the winning nation by theNation Cup Committee.

After so many years of shows this Nation Cup has gained impor-tant reputation and the winning horses in Aachen are conside-red to be the true champions.

In the year 2001, the Hedley’s and the Honourable Miss Mary N.Wragg came to the idea to add to the Nation Cup an additionalprice which should honour the efforts of the breeders of the hor-ses which were successfully presented in the Aachen Show.

The renowned artist Mrs. Karen Kasper created an impressivebronze showing an Arabian mare and close to her a foal convey-ing the always most exciting movement in a breeder’s creativeactivity.

Regrettably already after a few years Major Ian Hedley passedaway and it was decided to name this breeder’s cup "Major T.W.I. Hedley Memorial Trophy”. It was bestowed first time in theyear 2001 to the breeders in Poland on the occasion of the 19thNation Cup. In 2002, the trophy went to the breeders in Qatar,in 2003 and 2004 to the breeders in Belgium, 2005 to theItalian breeders and 2006 to the breeders of the USA.

In the year 2002 the Nation Cup was enlarged by accepting Mr.Hassanain Al-Nakeeb as a further committee-member, a verywell known breeder of Arabian horses for many years who firstestablished his stud in Jordan and transferred it later toEngland.

This highly frequented event offers a perfect background forexceptional events, as, for example, for the 50th anniversary ofthe German Arabian Horse Association.It was celebrated by a big evening spectacular show and beca-me one of the highlights in the Nation Cup history.

This year, the Nation Cup itself celebrates its own important 25thanniversary, and again it will be framed by special presentationsand doubtlessly another great festival for the Arabian horse.

Grußwort

Die 70er Jahre des vergangenen Jahrhunderts kann man alsGründerjahre vieler europäischer Pferdezuchtverbände betrach-

ten. Auch die meistenAktivitäten um Nutzungund Vorstellung von regi-strierten arabischen Pferdenbegannen in dieser Zeit.

Es waren Jahre, in denenman versuchte, herauszu-finden, wie eine richtigeSchau geleitet und wie ara-bische Pferde vor denAugen der Öffentlichkeitpräsentiert werden sollten.

Einige Elemente wurden von dem existierenden europäischenWissen über den Umgang mit dem Pferd übernommen, anderekamen aus den USA in die europäische arabische Gesellschaft. Diegrößten europäischen Schauveranstaltungen jener Zeit waren bei-spielsweise der Salon du Cheval in Paris, die Schau in Aachen unddie seit langem bestehenden nationalen Schauveranstaltungen inEngland, wie Ascot oder Snowdon. Auch einige andere kleinerenationale Schauen in den verschiedensten Ländern wurden in die-sen Jahren erstmals durchgeführt.

Es kamen verschiedene Richtsysteme zur Anwendung:Die durch Wettkampf geprägte Methode, wie sie in England sehrbeliebt ist, das 10-Punkte-System, welches hauptsächlich auf demeuropäischen Kontinent angewandt wurde oder das neue überra-schende schwedische Punkte-System.

Zusammenfassend kann man sagen, dass viele Ideen, viel Mut undWohlwollen investiert wurden, jedoch sahen diese Aktivitäten füreinen Außenstehenden nach einem einzigen Durcheinander aus. Eswar schwierig, einen Weg in die richtige Richtung zu finden.

Anlässlich der WAHO-Konferenz in Calgary im Jahre 1982 kam eineGruppe europäischer Vertreter zusammen, die über dieNotwendigkeit diskutierten, eine Ordnung in diese verwirrendeSituation zu bringen, denn jede Veranstaltung und jedesBewertungssystem behauptete, das Beste und Richtigste zu sein.Fakt ist, dass dieses Zusammentreffen im Prinzip der Beginn derspäter gegründeten ECAHO war und sogar die Basis und die wich-tigsten Punkte des ECAHO-Systems bereits in dieser Zeit festgelegtwurden.

1. Es sollte eine Schauklassifizierung geschaffen werden (A-, B- undC- Schauen)2. Es sollte sich auf ein Richtsystem geeinigt werden, das anwend-bar für alle Schauen ist und dadurch die Ergebnisse vergleichbarmacht.3. Jeder Schau sollte ein Disziplinarsystem übergestellt sein, umunerwünschte Methoden bei der Präsentation und beim Umgangmit den Pferden zu unterbinden.4. Es sollte eine dritte große neue Schau, speziell für europäischePferde, ins Leben gerufen werden.

Diese Punkte waren bloß als Überschriften skizziert und musstennoch ausgearbeitet werden. Bei den folgenden Treffen inDeutschland (Ströhen), in der Schweiz (Frauenfeld) und etwas spä-ter wieder in Deutschland (Hamburg) wurden Details diskutiert undschließlich Regeln beschlossen, die allen europäischenPferdezuchtverbänden zum Einverständnis präsentiert wurden. DerName der neuen Organisation lautete „ECAHO“ (EuropeanConference of Arab Horse Organization).

Wie bereits erwähnt, waren der Nations Cup und das Welt-Championat in Paris bereits akzeptierte und etablierte Schauen mitder Konsequenz, dass diese Schauen, aufgrund ihrerBedeutsamkeit, als A-Schauen eingestuft werden sollten. DasEuropa-Championat wurde als dritte A-Schau ausgewählt.

Kurze Zeit später begannen Auseinandersetzungen über dieZuständigkeitsfrage für diese existierenden A-Schauen. Die Schau inParis wurde von einem französischen Organisator und der NationsCup von seinem eigenen Komitee durchgeführt. Beide Parteienbaten um eine gewisse Unabhängigkeit von den ECAHO-Gremien,erklärten sich jedoch bereit, die meisten ECAHO-Regeln inAnwendung zu bringen, wenn auch nicht bis ins letzte Detail. DieAuswahl der Richter war dabei der größte Diskussionspunkt. Trotzdieser Art der Diskussion, die noch bis in das Jahr 1984 hin geführtwurde, fand der Nations Cup in Deutschland statt. 1985 wurde derNations Cup in Frauenfeld ausgetragen. Die Veranstaltung war sehrgut vom Schweizer Zuchtverband organisiert und brachte dem spa-nischen Team einen großen Erfolg. Letztendlich fanden der Salon duCheval und der ECAHO-Vorstand eine zufriedenstellendeAbmachung, dennoch schien zwischen dem Nations Cup Komiteeund der ECAHO über einen längeren Zeitraum die Zusammenarbeitschwierig zu verlaufen.

Die Idee des Nations Cups wurde durch Major Ian und AnnetteHedley vom Briery Close Arabian Stud in England entwickelt undfand relativ schnell große Unterstützung. Viele aktive Züchterstimmten diesem neuen Vorschlag zu. Es wurde ein großerAusschuss gebildet, der sich mit der Realisierung dieserSchauveranstaltung befasste.

Diese Schau sollte ursprünglich eine Wanderschau sein, die vonLand zu Land reisen sollte. Der Nations Cup wurde daher bereits inEngland, Spanien, Schweden und in der Schweiz ausgetragen.Anschließend stand Deutschland als Austragungsort an, zeitgleichals die neue ECAHO Organisation ins Leben gerufen wurde. Es wardie überzeugte Meinung des Nations Cup Komitees, dass ihreSchau ein „All Nations Cup“ sein sollte, offen für alle Pferde dieserWelt und nicht nur beschränkt auf Europa. Der Nations Cup sollteseine eigene Autorität bewahren.

Die Diskussionen hielten an. Zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt ent-schied das ECAHO Komitee, dem Nations Cup das Reisen zuerschweren. Fast alle Länder entschieden sich gegen eineBeiheimatung des All Nations Cups.

Umständen dafür, den Grundsatz zu ändern und den Nations Cupimmer am selben Ort und zur selben Jahreszeit abzuhalten.

Züchter, Pferde und Besucher könnten sich auf diese Weise an dieörtlichen Gegebenheiten (Hotel, Anreise) sowie an dieStalleinrichtungen und den Austragungsort gewöhnen. Aachenwurde als passendster Austragungsort angesehen. Dieser Ort konn-te alle Voraussetzungen zur Durchführung einer gutenSchauveranstaltung erfüllenund war zudem relativ ein-fach von den größtenAraberzuchtländern jenerZeit, wie beispielsweiseHolland, Belgien, Frankreich,Dänemark, England etc. zuerreichen.

Der Verband der Züchter undFreunde des ArabischenPferdes (VZAP) wurde da-raufhin gefragt, ob sie dieseneue Aufgabe, den NationsCup mit dem neuen Konzeptzu organisieren und durchzuführen, annehmen würden.Gemeinsam wurde eine zufriedenstellende vertragliche Einigunggefunden. Deutschland nahm sich der neuen Aufgabe, den NationsCup alljährlich in Aachen auszutragen, an. Obwohl dieseVereinbarung das ECAHO-Komitee nicht sonderlich erfreute, wurdedie Schau ausgeschrieben und erreichte einen herausragendenErfolg. Richter, die außerhalb Europas lebten, kamen zurUnterstützung. Der Ring und jede Schau-Klasse war mit vielen wun-derschönen Pferden gefüllt.

Weitere Veranstaltungen folgten Jahr für Jahr in angespannterSituation, aber letztendlich wurde 1989 die andauernde Diskussionzwischen dem Nations Cup und dem ECAHO-Vorstand mit einembefriedigenden Kompromiss beendet. Von diesem Zeitpunkt anwurde der Status des Nations Cup als A-Schau unter ECAHO-Regeln nicht mehr in Frage gestellt. Die wichtigsten Regeln derECAHO fanden beim Nations Cup Anwendung. Es fiel nicht weiterschwer, die Auswahl der Richter in die Hände des Nations CupKomitees zu geben.

Heutzutage wird der Nations Cup jedes Jahr am letztenSeptemberwochenende in Aachen ausgetragen. Der Verband derZüchter und Freunde der Arabischen Pferdes (VZAP) sammelteErfahrungen in der Organisation und Durchführung dieserVeranstaltung und machte diese Veranstaltung zu einer der meistakzeptierten Veranstaltungen dieser Art in der weltweiten arabi-schen Pferdeschau-Szene.

Jahr für Jahr werden ca. 150 bis 200 Pferde aus allen Teilen derWelt, in denen arabische Pferde gezüchtet werden, nach Aachengebracht, um diese im Schauring vorzustellen und durch die welt-besten Richter beurteilen zu lassen. Die Nation, die die meistenSiegerpferde präsentieren und die meisten Punkte sammeln konn-te, wird am Ende der Schau mit dem Nations Cup ausgezeichnet.

Dieser Preis wird von der britischen „Daily Mail Newspaper“ gestif-tet und wurde in den ersten Jahren durch Lady Harmsworth-Blunt,der Grande Dame der arabischen Pferdezucht, überreicht.

Als Lady Harmsworth-Blunt starb, wurde die Nations Cup Trophy in„Lady Harmsworth Blunt Memorial Trophy“ umbenannt und wirdseither der Sieger-Nation durch das Nations Cup Komitee überge-ben.

Nach etlichen Jahren der Veranstaltung hat sich der Nations Cupeinen herausragenden Ruf geschaffen. Die siegreichen Pferde ausAachen werden als die wahren Champions betitelt.

Im Jahr 2001 kamen die Hedley’s und die ehrenhafte Miss Mary N.Wragg auf die Idee, neben dem Nations Cup noch einen zusätzli-chen Preis zu verleihen, der die Bemühungen der Züchter der sieg-reichen Pferde aus Aachen ehren sollte.

Die berühmte Künstlerin Karen Kasper entwarf eine eindrucksvolleBronze-Statue, die eine Arabische Stute mit Fohlen zeigt und damitdie spannendste Zeit einer züchterischen Tätigkeit ausdrücken soll.

Bedauerlicherweise starb Major Ian Hedley bereits einige Jahre spä-ter. Es wurde entschieden, den Züchter-Pokal in „Major T.W.I.Hedley Memorial Trophy“ umzubenennen. 2001 wurde dieser Pokalerstmals an die polnischen Züchter anläßlich des 19. All NationsCups verliehen. 2002 ging diese Auszeichung an die Züchter ausQatar, 2003 und 2004 an die belgischen, 2005 an die italienischenund 2006 an die Züchter aus den USA.

Im Jahr 2002 wurde das Nations Cup Komitee durch HerrnHassanain Al-Nakeeb erweitert. Herr Al-Nakeeb ist seit vielenJahren ein bekannter Züchter, der erst sein Gestüt in Jordanien auf-baute und später nach England übersiedelte.

Diese vielbeachtete und stets gut besuchte Schau bietet den perfek-ten Rahmen für außergewöhnliche Ereignisse, wie beispielsweiseden 50. Geburtstag des Verbandes der Züchter und Freunde desArabischen Pferdes (VZAP). Dieser besondere Jahrestag wurde miteiner spektakulären Abendveranstaltung im Rahmen des NationsCups gefeiert und wurde zu einem besonderen Highlight seinerGeschichte.

Dieses Jahr feiert der Nations Cup seinen eigenen bedeutsamen 25.Jahrestag, zu dessen Anlass es wieder spezielle Darbietungen gibt.Die Veranstaltung wird dadurch wieder zu einem großartigenFestival des Arabischen Pferdes.

It`s time to say "Thank you"...

Since the premiere of the All Nations Cup 1980 in Ascot,UK and the stopovers in Sevilla, ES, Stockholm, SE andFrauenfeld, CH the All Nations Cup found its home inAachen-Soers, in the Albert-Vahle-Hall of the ALRV.

The first All Nations Cup, that took place in Aachen-Soers in 1984 was the 5th All Nations Cup. Since 1987all further events took place in Aachen-Soers.

The All Nations Cup Committee instructed the GermanArab Horse Society (Verband der Züchter und Freundedes Arabischen Pferdes,VZAP) for the 20th time to orga-nize the this year’s show event, the 25th All NationsCup.

Time to say "Thank you" to the All Nations CupCommittee: Dr. H.-J. Nagel, Mrs. A. Hedley, Mrs. D.Stream and Mr. H. Al-Nakeeb. Thank you for the confi-dence you had in us, as well as for the steady placing ofthe All Nations Cup to Aachen-Soers.

The All Nations Cup started in a small way and develo-ped to one of the most important show events worldwi-de with international participation.

In order to take these circumstances into account, aGala-Evening will be organized on the occasion of the25th All Nations Cup 2007. Besides the Champions ofthe past also an evening of entertainment will be cele-brated.

A special thank goes to the ladies and gentlemen of theVZAP, who worked out by indefatigable efforts thegenesis of the All Nations Cup up to today. Without theirengagement the production of the Gala-Evening-Catalogue would not be possible.

Further I would like to thank Betty Finke and ErwinEscher, as they picked out of the archives the photos ofthe Champions from 1980 to 2006 as well as to DaisukeSchneider, who designed and created the painting onthe front page with the title: "PEGASUS-STUDY".

Es ist an der Zeit „Danke“ zu sagen...

Nach der Uraufführung des All Nations Cups 1980 inAscot, UK und den Zwischenstationen in Sevilla, ES,Stockholm, SE und Frauenfeld, CH fand der All NationsCup schließlich seine Heimat in Aachen-Soers, in derAlbert-Vahle-Halle des ALRV.

Erstmals wurde der 5. All Nations Cup 1984 und seit1987 alle weiteren Veranstaltungen in Aachen-Soersdurchgeführt.

Zum 20. Mal hat nun das All Nations Cup Komitee denVerband der Züchter und Freunde des ArabischenPferdes e.V. (VZAP) mit der Ausrichtung des diesjähri-gen, dem 25. All Nations Cup beauftragt.

Zeit, an dieser Stelle dem All Nations Cup Komitee: Dr.H.-J. Nagel, Frau A. Hedley, Frau D. Stream und Herrn H.Al-Nakeeb „Danke“ zu sagen. Danke sowohl für das inuns gesetzte Vertrauen, als auch für die stetige Vergabedes All Nations Cups nach Aachen-Soers.

Der All Nations Cup hat sich aus kleinen Anfängen her-aus zu einer der weltweit bedeutendsten Schauen mitinternationaler Beteiligung entwickelt.

Diesem Umstand Rechnung tragend, wird anlässlich des25. All Nations Cup 2007 ein Gala-Abend ausgerichtet,bei dem neben Championatsträgern aus den vergange-nen Jahren auch ein buntes Schauprogramm „zele-briert“ werden wird.

Ganz besonderer Dank gilt auch den Damen und Herrender Geschäftsstelle des VZAP, die in unermüdlichemEinsatz die Vergangenheit aus der Entstehungsphasedes All Nations Cup bis zum heutigen Zeitpunkt aufge-arbeitet haben. Ohne ihr Engagement wäre dieErstellung des Gala-Abend-Kataloges in der Form, wieer nun erarbeitet wurde, nicht möglich gewesen.

Danke auch an Betty Finke und Erwin Escher, die dieFotos der Championatsträger von 1980 – 2006 aus den

Archiven herausgesucht haben sowie an DaisukeSchneider, der das Titel-Gemälde: „PEGASUS-STUDIE“entworfen und geschaffen hat.Ein weiteres Dankeschön gilt den vielen „Offiziellen“,den Helfern innerhalb und außerhalb des Schaurings,die in den Ablauf des All Nations Cup-Gala-Abendssowie der gesamten Schau mit eingebunden sind.
