Double page spread overview

All these double page spreads are from magazine Kerrang. The target audience for this magazine are those who listen to metal and heavy rock music. In this overview I will look at each article closely and identify common features and repeated patterns.

Most of these double page spread articles feature one main image. This is of the band or artist who the article is about. This not only makes the article much more appealing for the reader but it fills more space. Some of the other double page spreads have some smaller images. This depends on how much writing there is on teh article. All the images features on the article are relevant to the text. Thw fourth image of the male artists on the stage is holding an electric guitar. This is part of the mise en scene which is related to the rock genre of music. His facial expression is smiling and he looks very happy, this relates to the text as the pull quote says ‘cant wait to come back’, this is relevant because it shows he is looking forward to retunimg to stage with his band.

All of these double page spreads feature a pull qoute. This is when a quote from the article and used to exagerate a point, be used as the title of the article or to show the reader what the article is about. The main purpose of a pull quote is to make the reader want to continue reading the article. It is positioned in a particular way and is in large bold font this is to make it stand out the most.

The colour scheme and layout of each double page spread is different. Therefore Kerrang does not have a brand identity for their double page spreads , this shows they respect the featured bands and artists as individuals and all different. This shows they give each band/artist their own identity therefore when they are featured again the reader will recognise them from the previous feature. Hayley williams is usually featured on Kerrang magazine.

All of these double page spreads are under the ‘news’ section of the magazine. This is where all the important articles are. The news tab in the top left corner makes it easier for the reader top flick through the sections to find the page they want.

Most of the images of the bands and artists have direct contact between them and the reader this makes the reader feel priveledged and special that they are able to read the article about the bands and artists. This makes them feel they are special and more knowledgeable that other music fans. Some of the articles feature no direct eye contact between the reader and the band however they feel how the artist is feeling by looking at their pose and facial expression, this shows how into their music they are and the passion they feel. Hayley williams has her eyes closed while singing, this shows she works hard and puts all she has into her songs.

Having carried out this overview can conclude that Kerrang respect the individuality of the bands featured. The originality of it makes it stand out from other magazines and interests the audience.
