> The British garage/rap project led by Mike Skinner, AKA The Streets, joins the line-up of Mallorca Rocks. The Birmingham rapper signed a 5 album contract in 2002, which he fulfilled with the release of his 5th and final album “Computers and Blues” earlier this year. His performance trademarks include his crowd controlling “Go Low” command where the whole audience drops to the ground and “Go Moses” where the audience parts down the middle and Skinner runs to the back and crowd surfs back to the stage. As the project now comes to a close, the unofficial poet of geezer rap has been saying his goodbyes on stage as he plans to skank o! into the sunset to make films and books.

The Ibiza Sun (Ibiza) 14 de septiembre 2011

15www.theibizasun.comYou've remixed tracks by Laurent Garnier

and DJ Hell - what's the one track you'd

refuse to remix because, in your eyes, it

cannot be enhanced?

Is evil tangible, or are you a moral

relativity kind ofman?

They say a picture can paint a thousand

words, but what about a sound - can

sound convey lengthy and important

messages?

What advice can you give to up and

coming DJs who are eager to hit the big

time?

Have you any new releases looming up on

thehorizon?

If you could speak to everyone on the

planet for ten seconds, what would you

I think it's nearly impossible to remix any ofKraftwerk's tracks. I think it's difficult becausethe concept, sounds and sequences are sointricately entwined that Kraftwerk left almostzero space for modification. There aren't thatmany tracks that bare this type of form.

I'm kind up until a certain limit. I'm consciousof the subjective industry that I'm in. I do notexpect everyone to be the same. To like thesame thing, all the time - it's just wishfulthinking. The reality is that people havevarious capacities that we must all be mindfulof. What people "say" and "do" can becompletely different. Over time, I've come tolearn to watch people very closely and notmuch surprisesme anymore.

Both the mental imprinting of sight and soundcan be substantial, but I think visuals havemore of an effect because the eyes can gathermuch more information (shape, colour, depth, texture, positioning, weight etc.). For sound, the sense is slightly limited which is probablydue to a lack of human education of how to useour ears inmore spectral ways.

Well, I'm not sure about "The Big Time", but itmay be a good idea to learn an instrument orrecording equipment first before learning toDJ. This way, it's easier to understandwhat theDJ equipment is trying to imitate or resemble. For a producer, I would recommend that theymake 100 tracks first before releasing thefirst. By 100 tracks, they would learn andrealise what they do best as well as how theycan bring something new to Dance Music. From what I can hear, we have enough tracksthat have good bass line. What I wish we hadmore of was different ideas.

San Antonio's opulent Bay Bar is builtaround four gigantic pine trees which spiral uptowards the skyline like a posse of giantsnakes on a game board, before swelling outinto a thick canopy of lush green foliage. Andif you do decide to look up, you'll see gorgeousfemale dancers gently shaking their hips onthe high-rise platforms that are hidden aboutthe tree-line, while down below, in the heart ofthe alfresco bar, soft mood lighting shifts on animperceptible gradient from blue to green andthen back again. Indeed, it's been this way forover twenty years now - Bay Bar was and still

Amazeher at BayBar…

is, without doubt, the chicest VIP bar in SanAntonio;; a venue capable of transporting thetechno tinted Playa d'en Bossa barroom vibe tothe White Isles second city without any loss ofprecision or clarity, and without ever feelingforged or pretentious.

A giant plasma screen hovers close to theentranceway, but it doesn't sound with pettysporting noise;; instead, the giant telescreenthrobs with moving imagery pulled from aplethora of fantastic burlesque operaperformances, all of which are positivelybrimming with sleek traipsing nymphs and wellcloaked evil doers, their faces powderedequally thick with wild cosmetic expressions. To augment the mood further, add a handful offire-breathing performers and a steadybackground hum of intelligent barroom houseand techno music … and then, after all that, what do you have? Let me tell you: You have aslice of classic, refined Ibiza served up on theSan Antonio shoreline.Indeed, Bay Bar is a decent place to meet up

with friends - you can grab a patio booth all toyourself and loll around under the romandraped wooden trellises, drinking and nibblingon exquisite food until the sun goes down -And when it does, you can always board one ofthe free buses that run four nights a weeks toSpace and every Wednesday to Ushuaia, because Bay Bar is, after all, the White Islesofficial Space pre-party bar.But perhaps most importantly, if you really

want to impress a girl, call her up and requestthat she join you at Bay Bar;; it's the kind of chicdrinking venue that decent women can't helpbut fall in love with. Tell her to wear somethingfantastic, and if she agrees, allow her to relaxon one of the vertically pleasurable alfrescobeds, sipping ice cold mojitos and kicking herlegs out every now and then in order to giggleprettily at whatever it is you have to say. Nowinvite her over to the bar counter so she cantake a look at the wild array of fresh fruit that ispulsed into every cocktail - she'll be wowed bythe exotic colours and quickly order moredrinks… which is a good thing, because thissummer dance season, the staff at Bay Barhave been serving up some of the tastiest, freshest highball drinks on the island.

Youmay choose to spend your time listeningto a superfluity of famous singers and rockbands chirping away on the radio, or loading amillion and one CDs into the gash of your homestereo player, but you'll never truly grasp theaptitude of any musical outfit until you've seenthem perform live on stage in front of a packedout crowd at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel.Last Wednesday evening, I arrived at the

Hotel- a little later than usual - a few blocksaway, an ageing local man was struggling topark his car and I had to tender him immediatespiritual advice before he was finally able toswing his rusting Daewoo into the nearestparking bay… all of which meant that I missed

Streets Ahead…

the opening five minutes of The Streets lastever Balearic performance.

But so what, I thought, it's only TheStreets… they don't sound good on theradio… but as soon as I walked out onto thehigh-rise press balcony my spine was quicklyenveloped by long and lengthy shivers, causedin the most part by Mike Skinner's crisp andperfectly engineered urban libretto. You might say it's been a wild ten years for

Skinner and his ever fluctuating band ofbackstreet disciples. In 2001, they releasedtheir breakthrough track, “Has it Come toThis?”, quickly followed by their first studiolong player, “Original Pirate Material”, whichsold on all good English market stalls from thespring of 2002 onwards. “Original PirateMaterial” was a trailblazing album, rife withlyrical humour, mainstream garage sounds, boozy parables, and lashings of grimsocial/lifestyle commentary - a record thatpaved the way for acts like Jamie T and JustJack to follow. By late 2004, after the releaseof their second studio album, “A Grand Don'tCome for Free”, The Streets had become themost commercially successful urban live act inthe UK. Over the course of the next five years,Skinner penned and published three additionalstudio albums, all under the Streets moniker, with each subsequent offering showcasing amarked development in instrumental andpoetic maturity. Nevertheless, his decision tofold the band later this year makes perfectsense, not so much because he and his ganghave run out of ideas - in fact, many Streetsaficionados would argue that the groups latestalbum, “Computers and Blues and Cyberspaceand Reds”, is the bands best work - but rather,Mike Sinner has left the stage on a super high, and after taking a breath or two, you can betthat he'll be back on stage in the near future, jumping around on the nearest bass-bin with anew songbook and a body brimming withrenewed energy. But when you really break it down, Skinner's

overriding success has been largely due to hisinexorable ability to pen contemporary lyricsthat most young people can truly understand -the torment of a romantic break-up, or the gutwrenching consequences of a noxious nightout - without his emotive parables eversounding overly cheesy or clichéd.In fact, and as I found out on Wednesday

night, The Streets are an unreasonablyharmonious bunch of trained musicianscleverly disguised as a posse of inner-cityslack-jaws.

The sound engineers, too, deserve amention, because they got the gig acousticallyright - the top end percussion was fabulouslysnappy;; the bass was warm and pleasantlypitched throughout the event;; whilst, thankfully, and as you would expect at anydecently pitched Streets performance, thevocal midrange dominated the whole of thesonic spectrum without ever being anythingother than clear and concise.Indeed, The Streets drew the biggest crowd

of the season to the Ibiza Rocks Hotel. The gigwas what they often refer to in boxing circlesas: an absolute sell-out. The main courtyardwas full to capacity, as were the sidethoroughfares, and the VIP balcony was busy, too. Moreover, Skinner, wearing a black poloshirt, black jeans and black rapping sneakers, toyed with the swarming crowd all night -swigging beer, catching flying toilet rolls, andat one point, he even asked the crowd todismantle the contents of their hotel roomsand then toss the plunder on stage so he couldbuild some kind of alfresco bedroom aroundhismicrophone stand. It was a savage requestthat must have made the Hotel maintenance

that

16 www.theibizasun.comman terribly nervous … but I guess it didn'tconcern the Rocks chieftains too much, afterall, the mob were many and well watered, andeven the most inebriated among us could seethat Skinner and his gang were by far the bestlive act to have graced the Rocks Hotel stagethis summer. In summary: June's fantastically well

attended Fatboy Slim gig is now just a distantmemory, and moreover, it is no longer theyardstick by which to judge this seasons IbizaRocks Hotel gigs.

Big room DJ and producer, Richard Dinsdale, hasn't been romping around the dance musiccircuit for very long… which is something of asurprise when you take a look at all he hasachieved. He's DJd everywhere from Kent toKorea, is a card carrying member of MarkKnight's Toolroom Records stable, and evenFatboy Slim has a penchant for his thumpingtunes. And now, in joint partnership with hisbrother, Dinsdale has launched his own recordlabel - Tanzanite Records - which will act as aplatform for emerging artists, as well as beinga base for his own vibrant, groove laden housemusic sound. For these reasons and more, itseemed like the right time to send RichardDinsdale one of our probing questionnaires…and, thankfully, he was good enough to returnthe document post haste.

My first ever gig was at the super club Amnesiaabout 3 years ago and it was amazing. It was avery special night as I was playing the last settime and the crowd were really up for it andjust didn't want to go home.

Due to studio commitments on originalprojects and getting my label up and running,I've only played in Ibiza once this year, atAmnesia on the 4 September.

Yes, this is a very exciting project my brotherand I have undertaken with the help ofKomplete Music Management. It's a businessidea we have been thinking about for a whilenow, but we feel it's the right time to get it upand running. It's a house label with the mainaim of releasing quality house music by newand well established artists and producers inthemusic industry.

It's the same, because at the moment 85% ofmy set is all my music and I aim to make it100% in the next couple of months. I enjoyplaying my music and love seeing people'sreaction in the clubs when I drop a brand newtrack for the first time. It's a great way to testout new productions as well as some mightneed a little tweak.

I play CD's. I'm thinking of going to Tracktorbut my manager and D Ramirez have warnedme saying once you go Laptop you'll never goback to CD's just like when I went from Vinyl toCD's. Next year I would like to add more of alive element to my sets, so I will probably haveto go Ableton or Tracktor but I haven't made up

An InterviewwithRichardDinsdale

Can you tell us a little about the very first

gig you ever played in Ibiza?

When and where are you playing in Ibiza

this season?

What's all this I hear about Tanzanite

Records?

How does your DJ sound compare to your

production sound?

Do you play CDs or digital or Vinyl... or a

mixture of all three... and is there any

sounddifference between the formats?

th

mymind yet onwhat I want to do.

I really like what Disko Zoo are putting out andSpinnin Records are doing a great job.

Definitely my laptop, because I can work onthe road contacting people, emailing andproducing.

Not really, but I had a nightmare the otherweekend in Tunisia when I was playing at BoraBora. I was playing my remix of RogerSanchez's “Another Chance” and it wasbuilding and building to peak and then all of asudden the CD skipped JUST as the track wascoming out of themin break, I was gutted.

It would have to be Ministry Of Sound inLondon because it's home turf and a veryspecial club tome as I grew up going there.

Right now, at this moment in time, which

label is making the best dance music in

theworld?

When you're traveling around the world,

from country to country, from gig to gig,

what's the once piece of equipment

you're always sure to carrywith you?

Has a piece of DJ equipment ever gone

berserk in themiddle of one of your sets?

If you were going to hang up your DJ

gloves tomorrow, which venue, sited

anywhere in theworld, would you choose

to play your last ever set and what would

you call the night?

Who's the smartest DJ on the dance

circuit andwhy?

What tune, above all others, released

before 2002, do youwish you'd penned?

What tune, above all others, released

after 2002, do youwish you'd penned?

What equipment hardware and/or

software do youuse in your studio?

Technically, who's the most gifted DJ

you've ever seenplay andwhy?

In terms of production quality, who's the

best house/techno newcomer of

2010/11?

What advice can you give to up and

coming DJs who are eager to hit the big

time?

Have you any new releases looming on

the horizon?

Probably David Guetta or The Swedish HouseMafia, because they are very clever at nailingthe commercial market and that's where allthemoney is.

Robert Miles “Children” because I heard he got£1 million advance for it, and plus it's a classichouse track that was just cained to deatheverywhere youwent.

Eric Prydz “Pjanoo”. It's a great track.

--

Logic Audio;; Roland Midi Keyboard;; Nord Lead3;; Arturia Plugins;; Waves;; UAD 1 & 2 Cards;;Korg Legacy;; Moog Voyager;; 1000's of otherplugins.

Every time I see Carl Cox I just get the buzzback about wanting to hear a DJ's whole set. He's a gentleman and technically he'samazing.

It's a guy that we have actually been watchingfor a while and have a forthcoming EP fromhim on our label. His name is Jeremy JoshuafromSydney. Great, great sound.

Just keep doing what you are doing and keeptrying because eventually you will get there. You definitely have to produce and I highlyrecommend you learn how to produce foryourself and not rely on other engineers. Ithink it would be more rewarding that way aswell. Another good thing is, if there is a certainlabel you want to be with then go to theirnights if they do one, or just try to get yourselfinvolvedwith their label asmuch as you can.

Yes quite a few. Tazanite Records first releasecomes out in September, a new one onStefano Noferini label Deeperfect, my singlewith Byron Stingily on Toolroom Recordsremixes of Roger Sanchez “Another Chance”,Aly-Us “FollowMe” plus lots, lotsmore.
