SOCIA MEDIA Cyber Safety and Internet Usage expert Susan McLean recently spoke

at a Professional Development where Dorset Primary School staff

members were present. Her advice and experience was an eye opener

for many.

Some of Susan’s tips for parents were:

Get all internet based devices out of the bedroom, these are

generally poorly supervised areas. Have these devices in

common room areas where you can see what your child is

doing. This includes, iPhones, iPads, Laptops, & Gaming

consoles (PS3 & Xbox etc).

Parents should take the opportunity to work with their

children and learn about what their children are doing/using.

Internet filters and Surfing software (Net Nanny etc.) are not

the answer to cyber safety, they are a good start but are not

fool proof.

Over the last few weeks, children in year 2

have been busy in their maths sessions using

the balance scales. They have been weighing

items from around the classroom to balance

evenly at 100 grams, 200 grams and 500

grams. They have thoroughly enjoyed this

activity, finding many great discoveries.

Finally we are getting warm weather so summer crop seeds are germinating well. Old crops such broad beans are being removed to make way for summer plantings . If you'd like to have some broad beans (5 bean pods for $1) you can make a donation to the office SAKG money jar. The irrigation work will begin next week and this will be a big job to lay drip line in the beds. Any help from the school community would be greatly appreciated. The chooks will need a home over the holiday period. If anyone is interested, please contact the school with your details. You will need a secure enclosure and preferably no other chooks at home.

Thanks Anna

Last week seven girls from grade three and four

They qualified for this competition by winning

the grand final in the Hoop-time competition

earlier in the year.

The team – Soraya M, Bree W, Samantha T,

Hayley W, Mikaela H, Jaimee J and Chloe B.

Many thanks to Mrs Barkwith who trained and

coached the children.

Secondary Transition News

Last week, all the Grade 5 students visited

Mooroolbark Secondary College to take part in their

‘Red Earth All Rounder Day’. We competed against

students from other local primary schools in a round

robin and participated in German, P.E, Maths, Spelling

and Science activities. Dorset Primary School did

exceptionally well and was awarded five of the twelve

trophies at the end of the day. Both Mooroolbark and

Dorset staff were very impressed of the way our

students conducted themselves throughout the day.

Well done!

Regards,

Sarah Tilley – Transition Co-ordinator

Dear Parents,

Grade Placement 2014 and Transfers Out

Just a reminder that these are due to me by Friday 8th November at 4.30pm.

Requests can be left at the office or delivered to me personally.

Grade lists are being prepared for next year so it is very important that these

requests are in by Friday.

Thank you for your support with this matter.

Grade 2 Sleepover

This will be held on Friday night in the hall.

Thank you to the staff and parents who will make this activity very memorable. The children are very excited.

Please make sure you’re on time picking up your child on Saturday morning, no later than 7.30am. All the

staff want to get home for some sleep!!

Sun Smart Policy

Just a reminder that all children must have their hats on whilst outside, in accordance with the school policy.

No hat, children will be playing under the covered area, outside the canteen.

Prep Transition

An excellent program is well underway and it is tremendous to see so many new families coming to our great

school.

If you have not enrolled your prep child for 2014, please do so straight away, so that they can be included in

all transition activities.

Prep Garden

A new prep garden will be taking shape outside the prep classrooms over the next few weeks.

I can’t wait to see the finished product.

A very short week at Dorset. I hope you enjoyed the long weekend. I certainly got heaps of work done on

Monday - it was great.

Kind Regards,

John Jacobs Principal
