www.lupusuk.org.uk/ www.dorsetlupus.com AUTUMN 2018 A word from your (new)Coordinator… Hello everyone My name is Sean McFetrich and I have just taken over from Helen Bifield as the Dorset Regional Co-ordinator. I think first of all we should all pay Helen a huge vote of thanks for her reless work in this role over the past couple of years. I’m sure she won’t mind me saying that she has not always been in the best of health herself but has undertaken her role with commitment, enthusiasm and posivity. She has been a stalwart member and iniator of the local coffee mornings and supported lots of other fundraising events as well as aending the naonal commiee meengs in London a couple of mes a year. I can see from the few events I have aended that she is regarded by all of you with a great deal of warmth and affecon, and will be sorely missed although she will sll hope to be aending as many events, coffee mornings and fundraisers as possible. I was diagnosed with the SLE version of Lupus just before Christmas last year. I had been feeling red for the whole year but had just put this down to generally geng older and being busy running my own business! I started feeling unwell in October and for a couple of weeks just thought I had a really bad bout of flu with D&V, night sweats and loss of appete. It wasn’t unl I got the buerfly rash that, aer a few weeks, we were able to get some specific blood test done and finally diagnose the illness. However, having now met lots of people with Lupus, heard your stories and read much more about it, I feel as though I have been prey lucky. My illness was diagnosed relavely quickly - within a few months - whilst I know some of you had to wait years and, furthermore, many of you contracted the disease from a relavely young age whereas having only recently passed 50 I feel again I have had it lucky! Anyway, having felt really low, debilitated and fairly useless I wondered if i could help others who were suffering. I ran a few ideas past Helen but then when she felt she wanted to stand down as Regional Co-ordinator she put my name forward and here I am!
