”Dorogoi Dlinnou” –”Endless Road" (composed in 1917-1918 by Boris Fomin)

It became an international hit 50 years later under the English title "Those Were the Days”

It was featured in the 1958 Hollywood film "The Brothers Karamazov" (sung by Maria Schell) as a 19th Century traditional Russian tune.

American folk singer Gene Raskin wrote new English lyrics for the melody and recorded it in 1962 as "Those Were the Days"; that same year it was more successfully covered by the group the Limelighters.

Paul McCartney heard the song and used it for debute of Welsh singer Mary Hopkin. Released in August 1968, Hopkin's version of "Those Were the Days", produced by McCartney, became a #1 hit in the UK and reached #2 in the US charts. Only Raskin was given a writing credit on the single.

Those were the daysLyrics- Gene Raskin; Music -Boris Fomin

1. Once upon a time there was a tavern Where we used to raise a glass or two Remember how we laughed away the hours, And dreamed of all the great things we would doCHORUS: Those were the days my friend We thought they’d never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we chose We'd fight and never lose

2. For we were young and sure to have our way Then the busy years went rushing by us We lost our starry notions on the way If by chance I’d see you in the tavern We’d smile at one another and we’d say Those were the days...
