Enterprise-wide Information Management:Breaking down data silos and lessons learntDr Chi Nguyen, Digital Information Manager;
Dr Neil Fraser, Director of Strategic Planning &Information, Macquarie University
About the workshop:
In most universities it is not uncommon to seeinformation separated into various “silos": recordsdata - oen in physical paper les, administrationand backoce les, students and sta information,research datasets, and reporting and analytics data- oen in Excel spreadsheets and various custommade databases. Managing these disparate sourcesof information is a daunting task especially given thelegislative requirements around compliance, privacyand security that the university, as a public institution,
must comply to. More importantly, the ability tosearch and utilise key information in a timely mannerhas become more and more critical in areas such asstrategic planning, marketing, and commercialisationof research outputs.
In this workshop we will present tools and strategiesfor managing these disparate information sources based on our experience at Macquarie University.Topics that we will cover include:
• Digitisation - how to turn 10 million pages of physicalpaper records into fully indexed and searchableelectronic records.
• Enabling universal web accessibility and persistentunique identier for all individual pieces ofinformation
• Metadata - design and repository support forenrichment of metadata to digital assets, and automaticmetadata extraction tools
• Search - enabling user search across millions of assetswhile preserving user security and access controlconstraints.
• “Datamarts" - data warehouse design and technologyto support reporting and visualisation of key businesscritical information.
• Strategic planning with unstructured text analytics
