Bridges—still working and still having fun, but…It has been a long time since I last wrote about Bridges and, if I were actually talking to you, it would be more like a Fireside Chat. But as we are all a busy group of individuals these days, I’ll keep it short. Sunday Morning Bridges has recently seen a small increase in attendance. Since we are directly hampered by having no Sunday bus service, this is no small achievement. Almost all of our friends are restricted to bus service, or rely on staff willing to bring them to church. We are thankful for all those who can make it on a Sunday morning.

It has been brought to my attention over this past year that many of our church family are not aware that the Bridges Class meets longer than any of the other church classes. We start at 9:30 a.m. and continue until after the 11:15 service, dismissing at about Noon. We do this, in response to our friends’ needs. Many are not able to attend a long service, or understand the sermon. They love music, watch movies and are given simple messages. This is what Bridges is all about. We keep our messages very simple and uncomplicated, using arts and crafts, example and love and packing a big punch!

We also have a very large group on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening is a drop-in gathering for arts and crafts, but mostly for companionship, friendship and learning new skills. We average approximately 15 to 25 friends each week.

Bridges has been meeting on Sundays since 1997 and on Wednesdays since 2001. We have expanded our program to include life skills training, communication, self awareness, personal space and values. Every third Wednesday (usually) we also meet in the Dining Room for an evening meal. This has become quite popular. It is not a free hand-out, but a way for them to contribute to a common good. Each brings one dollar and their own drink so it does not infringe on their limited budgets. Bridges, by the way, is a free class for everyone who attends (individual or support staff).

Bridges meets year-round every week, Sunday and Wednesday and we always have fun. We welcome anyone and everyone to stop in for a quick word or two, or to join in our fun or break bread with us. As always, we need extra help of any kind. We are the only class of its kind in Salem. This is a wonderful and unique ministry—and one that I will have to leave for the next year.

I have been attending college for the past year and will start my final year in Sept. This will be my clinical phase and my time will no longer be my own. Bridges will suffer because of this. I do have three wonderful volunteers to help, but it is not enough. This program, while not a huge strain, runs year-round. This requires volunteers every week; or I have to do them all. In the past, I have been able to handle most of the classes. But as I already stated, I can no longer do this.

This program is constantly bringing in individuals from all over the Salem area and has expanded beyond. A program of this kind is greatly needed in this area. There are few places for special adults to go to other than a couple of dances a month or Special Olympics games. This is why I am asking for help from our church members and beyond. There need not be a huge commitment; a small one would be great!

There is very little required of you; just a few hours on Wednesday and/or Sunday. Our clients are well-versed in what to do and would love to teach you the rules of the room. I will continue to have some connection with Bridges. (After all, who would buy the supplies and the pizza!) This is my plea for help, PLEASE if you are not sure, just ask Jesus. I’m sure he would approve.

Y O U T h M i n i S T r i E SYouth Sunday and ConfirmationOn May 22 we welcomed six youth into full membership here at Salem First UMC after completion of their confirmation classes. These students came together in February to begin their journey toward a profession of faith. On two different weekends, they came together for study, questions and play. In between, they spent several Sundays after church in class and meeting with their mentors, wrestling with questions of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ.

Each youth was partnered with an adult mentor, who took time to be at the retreats and classes and meet with their confirmand outside of the formal class setting. These adults served as sounding boards, study partners, encouragers and fellow pilgrims on this faith journey. When you see them around church please take time to thank them for sharing their time and gifts with the youth.

Please celebrate and pray for Benjamin Avery and Bill Cummins, Keirstin Morris and Sally Cowell, Jeff Metzger and Eric Bonn, Rachel Kelly and Jane Murch, Joshua Bonn and Dave Metzger and Nikita Ramakrishnan and Jo Johnson.

Mission TripIt’s hard to believe, but the mission trip is just two short months away! There’s much to do and we’re ready to jump in and get started.

Our first team meeting was May 18. After a shared dinner with the youth group and some game time just for fun, we explored what it means to be good stewards and servants for God.

Wednesday, June 1, will be our PARENT AND YOUTH meeting. Dinner will be at 6 p.m., then we will dismiss to mission team information. Safety rules, trip conduct and the dreaded cell phone policy will be discussed at that meeting.

Wednesday, June 22, will be the last team training, but we have plans for a fun team-building event at the YWAM ropes course in July.

Please hold these youth and adults in your prayers as they prepare to go and serve: Katy Julian, Rosemary Hickerson, Jacob Bonn, Courtney Luth, Jeff Metzger, Keirstin Morris, Rachel Kelly, Joshua Bonn, Nikita Ramakrishnan, Amanda Bednarz, Paul Julum, Gillian Berry, Jan Morgan, Susan Horning, Eric and Kristen Bonn, and Brett Landman.

UMViM trip to Costa rica Pat Fisher and Gladys Camber joined the Oregon UM Volunteers in Mission Team led by Donna and Glenn Waltman on a trip to Costa Rica in March. We worked with the UBL (Latin American Biblical University) to prepare a piece of property for 4 new units of student housing. Our work included a lot of digging, raking and debris removal to create a smooth and level building site.

Pat served as the team translator and helped communicate instructions from our UBL “crew chiefs” William and Sylvestre. The team also took turns helping Doña Emma, our cook from El Salvador, to prepare meals for the team. We learned how to make tortillas, black beans, rice and many other dishes from Central America.

Every night missionaries who were studying or teaching at the UBL shared their stories with us. Each morning members of the VIM Team took turns leading devotions. It was hard work, but the UMVIM Team came home feeling very enriched by the mission experience. We were very impressed by this little campus that brings people from many denominations and many countries together for degree programs and other training. Becky Harrell, the VIM Coordinator is planning for the Oregon VIM Team to return in February, 2012. Please call Gladys Camber, 503-581-5349, or Pat Fisher if you would like to hear more about the trip.

interfaith hospitality network (ihn)Grateful thanks to the 44 volunteers who helped host four homeless families, including children ages 4 months to 6 years old, in MICAH during the week of April 17-24. Volunteers prepared morning and evening meals, set up and took down sleeping and dining areas, spent the evening and stayed over-night with families and purchased needed food. Thanks also to church office staff for their assistance and to the custodians who helped throughout the week.

FUMC is one of 15 Salem churches in the Interfaith Hospitality Network committed to providing shelter to families who are homeless, along with 16 associate churches who volunteer their assistance to hosting churches.

We will be hosting families again the week of Sept. 11 to 17. If you would like to be a part of this ministry, please call Bill and Judy Allen at 503-581-6547, Tom Scheuermann at 503-375-3826, Pam Olson at 503-588-7594 or Paula Sullivan at 503-371-3467.

SEniOr MiniSTrY Proposal and SurveyOver the past few months, there has been a growing interest (expressed by many members of the FUMC congregation) in the possibility of developing a comprehensive church ministry focused on seniors (for now, defined as those 50+ years old).

As a result, Pastor Dan Pitney has brought together an exploratory committee comprised of Marci Ling, Karen Stevens, Geraldine and Ron Goetz, Wilbur and Mary Bluhm and Linda Bruce.

At the first meeting of the group (April 26), many possibilities for such a ministry were discussed. It was noted that some existing, isolated church activities might fall under the umbrella of “senior ministry” and that a wide variety of others could be added.

In order to accurately assess the interest in and need for the proposed senior ministry at FUMC, the exploratory committee felt it would be necessary and helpful to survey the congregation. (A copy of the survey is included in this issue of The Spire.) Those completing the survey are asked to submit it no later than Sunday, May 29.

Get ready to build the future on a rock-solid foundation

with God as we go “Under Construction”!

This summer we have TWICE the fun! Join us in the daytime, in the evenings, or both!

Family Faith Nights Wednesdays, June 22 - July 20

6 - 8 p.m. Salem First UMC All ages welcome!

Traditional VBS Monday, June 27 - Friday, July 1

9 a.m. - 12 noon Salem First UMC

Ages 4 - completed 5th grade

Experience hands-on mission work using a construction theme as we partner with Habitat for Humanity this week. Children can ‘build’ a faithful life that praises God and reaches out to others through Bible stories and activities, singing, worship, games and craft projects which will provide for the needs of others in our community. Each day will be a new theme that builds on the previous day’s experience: Community Cares, Community Shares, Community Learns, Community Worships and Community Celebrates.

VBS Volunteers Needed!! Will you please step forward and help? It takes many people to make Vacation Bible School a reality. We anticipate needing 30 leaders and assistants (who have completed 6th grade and up) for the weekday program in the following areas: Crew Leaders (stays with small group and helps lead them from activity to activity), Creative Technician and actors (to prepare and lead mini-drama for gathering time), Engineers (teachers who lead a single area each day—music, crafts, snacks, games, Bible stories). We will also need several helpers to prepare supplies and projects in advance. Because many of the projects are pre-assembled for the children to decorate and give to the Habitat Family, we especially need woodworkers! Please contact the church office at 503-364-3709 and let us know you want to help make this a life-long memory for our children.

Ever wonder why only kids get to have all the fun of Vacation Bible School? Now it’s your turn! Enjoy an evening with your church family! Come share a meal, sing some songs, learn more about the work of Habitat for Humanity, try your hand at a family craft project and worship together. Each Wednesday night will be a new theme, with a story from the Habitat files that builds over the five evenings. Please note that the first Wednesday Family Faith Night will happen the week prior to Vacation Bible School.
