DONOR NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2010 Dear Donor, Sensing the wind of change and seizing the opportunity, UCD Foundation made supporting students the primary focus of our fundraising campaigns. The story of the last three years at UCD can be told through these two words. We launched the Alumni Fund in 2007 to support the student experience; sporting, cultural, academic and social. The importance of the Fund soon became evident as we were inundated with grant applications from scholarship programmes; the Library; and various clubs and societies. The global economic uncertainty has been a stark reminder that our resources are precious and finite. Every euro we raise is vital to the life of the University and helps us to achieve our vision; forming global minds. To date approximately 700,000 has been raised and disbursed to support our excellent scholarship programmes, for academic enrichment, to sustain our beloved Choral Scholars’ musical endeavours, to provide essential resources for the Library, to develop the sporting ability on campus and much, much more. As you read through this special donor newsletter you will see the success stories, the testimonials and the achievements of the students who have benefitted from your support. With each story we are mindful that we owe a debt of gratitude to the 1,500 donors who have given and continue to give regularly to support the University and our students. We have achieved so much and yet the need for your continued support remains. We need to be able to support worthy projects, like those included in this newsletter, on an annual basis. As you read this issue I hope you will be aware that there is much more that we can and must do. Whether you gave to the Alumni Fund, the Library Appeal, the Choral Scholars or the Class Gift Programme; I welcome the opportunity to offer my personal thanks for your generosity and thoughtfulness – it is much appreciated. DONOR NEWSLETTER

SUMMER 2010

Dear Donor,

Sensing the wind of change and seizing the opportunity, UCD Foundation made supporting students the primary focus of our fundraising campaigns.

To date approximately €700,000 has been raised and disbursed to support our excellent scholarship programmes, for academic enrichment, to sustain our beloved Choral Scholars’ musical endeavours, to provide essential resources for the Library, to develop the sporting ability on campus and much, much more.

As you read through this special donor newsletter you will see the success stories, the testimonials and the achievements of the students who have benefitted from your support. With each story we are mindful

that we owe a debt of gratitude to the 1,500 donors who have given and continue to give regularly to support the University and our students.

Alumni Fund Donor Newsletter / Summer 2010

Since 2007, nine scholarships have been awarded through the Alumni Fund and the Class Gift Programme, and donations from UCD graduates have ensured that these scholarships help students not only to participate fully in UCD life, but to reach their full potential.

UCD reserves a number of places each year for students who have the ability to benefit and succeed in higher education. Stephen from Ringsend is the beneficiary of a New ERA Scholarship. He told us:

“I’m the first member of my family to go to university, but I hope not the last. I’m studying single honours History and hope some day to teach. This wouldn’t be possible without a university degree, and I wouldn’t be here without the New Era

Scholarship that came through the Alumni Fund and the Class Gift Programme. So I’m really grateful to the donors who made it possible.”

The programme also works with primary schools, introducing young students to UCD and establishing and reinforcing an image of third level education as a positive and accessible option from an early age.

The Alumni Fund and the Class Gift Programme are proud supporters of the New ERA scholarship programme, and we would not be able to fund these vital scholarships without the support of our alumni. With your help, we can continue to ensure that greater numbers of disadvantaged students can fulfil their hopes and ambitions at UCD.

NEW ERAThe UCD New ERA Programme works in close partnership with thirty-one secondary schools, helping students who wish to pursue third level education but who may not have the opportunity to do so.

Since its foundation in 1998, hundreds of students have joined the choir, with 36 scholarships awarded across UCD. The choir received the top prize in Lyric Fm’s 2009 annual Christmas Choirs Competition, seeing off competition from 200 other choirs and ensembles. The very successful

year culminated in two sold-out Christmas concerts with the Ulster Brass Quintet.

The Alumni Fund remains an enthusiastic supporter of the choir and its accomplishments, and there is more to

come: in 2010/2011 UCD Choral Scholars will perform with the European Union Chamber Orchestra, both on tour in the UK and in Ireland. In addition, this eminent orchestra will join the Choral Scholars at their annual spring concert in April 2011.

Stephen from Greystones is a Choral Scholar and a final year student studying Chemical Engineering. He says:

“I joined the Choral Scholars because I have played piano and sung from a very young age. The choir was a great opportunity for me to pursue my passion and hone my musical skills. There is a lot of commitment involved in being part of a choir like this, but it is worth it when I look back on what we’ve achieved over the last few years. I am so grateful to the alumni and friends of UCD who have supported the Choral Scholars and made all of this possible“.

CHORAL SCHOLARSOver the last decade, UCD Choral Scholars have become cultural ambassadors for the University, performing on the national and international stage, and achieving success that is acknowledged far and wide.

LIBRARYUCD alumni have been extremely generous donors over the past few years. These donations have allowed the University to achieve great things, including the funding of a vital piece of conservation work within the Special Collections and the Mícheál Ó Cléirigh Institute. Both of these collections are home to a variety of valuable and rare Irish books and manuscripts that are an integral part of our country’s history.

Remember when the Library at UCD was like your second home? Where you sat in front of piles of books. Occasionally studying. Often just soaking up the social atmosphere, seeing and being seen, all too easily lured away for coffee, knowing the books would still be there on your return.

The James Joyce Library is UCD’s centre for information and knowledge. It is in many ways the heart of the University and is fundamental to UCD’s success. UCD Foundation is committed to supporting the library with funding needed to continue to provide an excellent service to UCD students and alumni.

The Adopt-a-Book Appeal was launched this year because of an urgent need for funding to support the purchase of additional essential texts within the Library.

We are asking graduates to donate €50, which is the average cost of an essential text. In recognition of the gift, we will place a bookplate with a name of your choice, or a name in memoriam, in a book in the library. We have received an excellent response to date and we are very grateful to all graduates who have supported the appeal.

If you would like more information on the appeal or would like to make a donation, please contact Irene Timmins on 01 7161452 or email [email protected]. To donate online, please visit http://www.ucd.ie/foundation/fundraisingcampaigns/.

Adopt-a-Book

In autumn 2009, UCD Foundation’s fundraising appeal received an excellent response to its telephone, direct mail and email campaigns, attracting over €55,000 in donations from UCD graduates. This funding has allowed UCD Archives and the UCD Mícheál Ó Cléirigh Institute to carry out essential conservation and digitisation work on its valuable collections.

Vellum manuscripts and paper documents have been treated and restored to the highest international standards by professional conservators. Researchers also created catalogues that will enable scholars throughout the world to access these documents. The work of the UCD Mícheál Ó Cléirigh Institute on the Franciscan archive has brought the university’s historical and archival research to the attention of many renowned scholars in recent years and has gained international recognition.

John McCafferty, Director of the UCD Mícheál Ó Cléirigh Institute for the Study of Irish History & Civilisation says:

“Our work on preservation, damage repair, digitization and exhibition is critical to safeguarding these valuable collections. We are very grateful to all of the alumni who supported the Library Appeal last year. The funding we received has gone a long way to ensuring that these precious items will be protected for generations to come”.

The scholarships – of which there are 124 at present, across all sports – are aimed at developing and supporting the best young players to enable them to compete at the highest national and international level. They also give access to the best sports facilities and coaching, which not only enhances their sporting abilities, but also their teamwork and leadership skills.

Team sport is a major focus of the scholarship programme and the University fields teams at the highest competitive level. Last year, the Alumni Fund provided seven rugby scholarships and the recipients will, no doubt, soon join the current list of provincial and international players. First year Rugby Scholarship recipients included Peter Du

Toit, Ben Doyle, Andrew Boyle, David Doyle, James Thornton, David Lynch, Jordan Egan, Ben Marshall, Rhys Ruddock and Ciaran Ruddock (all pictured to left).

Many of our rugby scholarship recipients have had a great year, playing for Leinster and Ireland. Peter du Toit and David Lynch were both capped for Leinster at U19 Level, while Ciaran Ruddock was capped for the Leinster A team. Andrew Boyle, David Doyle and Ben Marshall were all capped for Ireland at U20 Level and Rhys Ruddock was capped for Ireland at Senior Level.

This year we awarded five golf scholarships and we are very proud of the achievements of the scholarship recipients: Gerry Kelly won the 2009 3G Irish Universities Gold Championship last October, and was also selected to represent Ireland at the recent World University Golf Championships; Stephen Walsh (pictured above) was crowned Ulster Youths Amateur Open Champion in Kirkistown Castle in June 2010; and John Greene won the Waterford Scratch Cup in June 2010.

Sports scholarships help elite athletes to pursue their dreams, enhance their education and raise the profile of UCD.

SPORTS2009/2010 was a successful year for our sports teams and much of the credit must go to the sports scholarship programme.

The Alumni Fund has supported a variety of projects over the past few years. The projects funded span the breadth of activity at UCD and are of vital importance to UCD students. Other projects supported include Get in Gear programme, the Student Counselling Service, the Woodland Walkway, the UCD Symphony Orchestra and many more. Please visit http://www.ucd.ie/foundation for a full list of Grant Awards.

Special thanks must be given to all those who supported the Terrace Graduates’ Fund. UCD is now proceeding to build an atrium between the Health

Sciences Building and the new Charles Institute. This atrium will be known as the Kevin Barry Atrium and will house the Kevin Barry window and provide a congregation space. There will be a plaque in the Atrium describing the origin of the Kevin Barry window, Kevin Barry’s association with UCD and UCD’s association with the emergence of the Irish State during that period. We hope to have a final update in late Autumn.

Other projects Bi-annual telethons are a vital part of UCD Foundation’s fundraising efforts. They also put us back in touch with UCD alumni. We want to thank all alumni who took part in our telephone campaigns over the past few years, and who gave so generously to the Alumni Fund.

We’d also like to thank the many student callers who have been very positive about their experiences. Thomas O’Boyle has taken part in five telephone campaigns. He says:

“The campaigns are a great way to meet new people. I’m an Engineering student, and it’s really interesting to talk to alumni who took similar programmes. It is by far the most rewarding job I’ve had because I know that all the money raised goes to support some great initiatives.’

Thanks also to all alumni who responded so generously to our direct mail and email campaigns, and to the Class Gift programme. Your support is much appreciated!
