Dear Friend,I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing commitment to the Canadian Red Cross. It is because of you that we are able to provide important life-saving assistance to thousands of people both in Canada and around the world each and every day.

It has been another busy year for the Canadian Red Cross. From responding to domestic emergencies, including widespread flooding in Thunder Bay, to continued work overseas in countries like Haiti, we were there to help.

On average, the Canadian Red Cross responds to emergencies in Canada every four hours and up to three emergencies per week around the world. It is because of our preparation, training, investment and infrastructure that we are able to respond rapidly and effectively to people in need. We are proud of the work that we do, and you should be as well.

Thank you for your support. Our efforts would not be possible without you.

Sincerely,

Our Work in CanadaRed Cross Responds in Thunder BayOn May 27, 2012 heavy rain led to extensive flooding in northwestern Ontario. The City of Thunder Bay and some of the surrounding communities were particularly hard hit, leading the City to declare a state of emergency. The flooding caused such devastation that it warranted a large response – in fact, it was the largest Red Cross response in Ontario in the last decade. In 18 days, more than 160 Canadian Red Cross staff and volunteers committed more than 14,000 hours providing support and assistance to the families affected by the flood.

In cooperation with other first responders and the City of Thunder Bay, the Canadian Red Cross established two shelters, an Information Centre and phone support line, three Assessment Centres where families could receive immediate aid, and a Disaster Response Unit that delivered almost 500 clean-up kits.

Thanks to donors like you, the Red Cross provided support to approximately 2,150 Thunder Bay residents and will continue to monitor long-term recovery for all affected people.

Up in smoke - Quebec family loses home in fireDiane Pinsonneault and her partner Olivier Brais had just put up the curtains in their new home in Saint Alphonse de Granby, Quebec when they smelled a slight odour of smoke.

“We saw smoke coming from the corner of the house. In the short time it took to dress the kids, the kitchen wall was burning and the floor was cracking”, remembers Mrs. Pinsonneault.

“In our minds, the Red Cross helps people affected by disasters in Haiti and around the world, but we forget that it is also here for us, in Canada”, she confided. Canadian Red Cross volunteers quickly arrived with blankets, hygiene kits and vouchers for hotel nights and meals for the entire Pinsonneault family.

“We really appreciated the help because it allowed us to be all together in a hotel room and quietly

recover from the emotion as a family. Thank goodness the Red Cross was there for us.”

The Red Cross’ work throughout the world is guided by 7 Fundamental Principles: Humanity | Impartiality | Neutrality | Independence | Voluntary Service | Unity | Universality

Letter of GratitudeMy mother Elizabeth, who lives in Sarnia, receives regular rides from the Ontario based transportation program of the Canadian Red Cross. She has appreciated the kindness, detailed service and personal care the drivers of the unit provide for her.

She is amazed the service is so exceptional. As we correspond by telephone on a daily basis, I hear from her about this experience at least twice a week.

I am truly amazed at what must be a tremendous selection and training program carried out in order to select the finest people to drive and make close contact with people like my mother.

The international work of the Red Cross has always been one of our top charities to support. Now, as a result of the impressive service provided to my mother, we decided to also commit ourselves to the Canadian Red Cross by making a monthly donation to support work in Canada. Every call to my mother, after she has had a ride with your service, has only confirmed the appropriateness of our decision.

All this to say: “Thanks a million from all of us!”
