Trip Policy:

A $75.00 deposit for our Multi-Day Trips must be paid at the time of sign-up or you may pay the full amount

at that time. We would appreciate it if you would pay by check as it makes bookkeeping easier. Please

remember to book your trip as soon as you decide to go. All trips have to be paid 1 to 1&1/2 months before

trip date unless otherwise stated. This will cause less cancelling of trips for not enough interest. We recommend that you take out

insurance at the time of deposit for full coverage on longer trips. If we cancel a trip or the tour company cancels, you will receive

a refund. There will be no refunds from us once we have paid the travel company its first payment when the trip is a go. We will

be glad to arrange monthly payments for you. So, come on and travel with us.

THRIFT SHOP NEWS

Enjoy our Thrift Shop and donate when you are able. Linda

has made such a professional presentation in our Thrift Shop

that our shelves are getting bare. Our Center now needs your

help to restock our shelves. We need books, clothing, small

appliances and household goods of all kinds. Please see what

you have and ask your friends and neighbors if they have

items that they would like to donate. The income from our

Thrift Shop is now a very strong source of support for our

operating fund. Please, make sure the items you donate are

items that you would resell.

Senior Citizens Exercise Program I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and

start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.

Fall is officially here and I know I do this every fall but here goes….It’s only 91 days till Christmas. We

have to count our blessings living here in Pennsylvania. There are so many people displaced not only in our

country, but other countries in the Caribbean and Mexico from the floods, wildfires and earthquakes. Don’t

forget about our parties that are coming up in October, November and December. Come on out to our covered

dish/ Membership Meeting. Bring a dish or pay $5.00. Our Volunteer Lunch is October 18th. There is a sign

up sheet at the front desk. The Flea Market and Bake Sale is Saturday December 2nd and tables are still

$10.00 each. We need baked goods to sell at the Flea Market. Please bring in your baked goods by Friday December 1st for the

center to sell at the Flea Market. We are having a Christmas Lunch and Sing a Long on December 21st. Sign up for lunch by

Wednesday December 13th by noon. The band and choir will be our song leaders. Happy Halloween, Think of our Veterans on

Veterans Day, Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Summer??, what Summer? Zoom, gone. That went way too fast. I think that I was in the pool about

three or four times all summer. Well, I hope we have a good Fall. As I write this post, I am praying

for the people in Florida getting hit by Irma. Our prayers should go out to the people in our

Country getting devastated be raging fires and Texas, that had to deal with Harvey. Puerto Rico

and the other islands hit by hurricanes. Our center is coming along fine. I want to thank our

volunteers and committees for doing a great job. When I was just a member of the center, I really

didn’t know the work that was involved in making it run from day to day. Sara, Jim and the rest of

the volunteers work their butts off making everything work. Thank You. In November, I will be playing your

favorite music for the party. I hope you show your support to the center and come out for some of your favorite

music from the days you grew up. Good music you can dance to or just reminisce. Until my next post, stay

healthy and safe.

Knitting and Crocheting Class: Come In And Make Some New Friends.

Chair Yoga

We now have Chair Yoga on Wednesday at 12:30. It is very relaxing and great for your muscles. $3.00 for

members and $5.00 for non-members. The 2nd Wednesday we will not have Chair Yoga as that is our party day.

Games: Dominos, Bean Bag Toss, 313, Bunko and Hand & Foot

Tuesdays at 12:30 will be the time for cards & games. There will be different ones to play. Come on out and try it.

It will be fun. $1.00 to play, with snacks. The 4th Tuesday we will not have cards as that is our

Covered Dish/ Membership Meeting.

Bingo: You Must Play To Win! The First Thursday Of Each Month We Have A $50 Jackpot!

Every Thursday we have Bingo here at the Center. Linda Smith is our professional caller. We would like to thank Julie

Karcher, Carmen Nyce and Diane Deeds for helping to sell Bingo cards and run the money.

Bingo starts at 12:15 and continues until 3:00.

It’s open to the public, so if you like Bingo, please come and join us.

Computer Class

Linda Bartholomew Stauffer will be our computer class teacher. Bring in your laptop on Mondays at 12:00 Noon.

The Importance of What We Do

Being Part Of Our Community

1. We are still a collection site for the Food Pantry. At this time, pasta and sauces are needed. Please buy a second

something on sale and drop it off here. They also need canned and packaged goods that won’t spoil.

2. Eyeglasses are still being collected and given to the Lion’s Club.

3. Tabs from pop top cans (soda, tuna, cat food, etc.) are being collected for the Ronald McDonald House, which shelters

families of children who are seriously ill or injured. We give them to the Women’s Club who takes them to a McDonald’s

repository.

4. Both our choral group “The Sunshine Singers” and our band “The Impossibles” go to different nursing homes and

assisted living facilities to entertain those residents every month.

5. Please bring in any post-marked stamps to the front desk. We collect cancelled stamps, and they are given to

the Blind Association.

6. The V.A. Clinic in Allentown has a little coffee room available to patients while they wait for their appointments. They

need sugar, tea bags, artificial sweeteners and stirrers.

7. We are now recycling our used papers and newspapers at our Center. The Milford Volunteer Fire Dept. has a dumpster

in our parking lot. Please feel free to use it.

8. We are collecting pennies for Cancer Research. Please bring your pennies and loose change in to help.

9. We are sending gift boxes to our Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. We need more donations to fill our boxes.

10. We help support Quakertown’s Fourth Of July Fireworks Display with our Bingo-In-The-Park and selling Pulled

Pork Sandwiches at these 2 fundraising booths.

11. Our Volunteers distribute our newsletter throughout the Upper Bucks Area.

THANKS TO THE LAST QUARTER NEWSLETTER

Will Basso brought his sister-in-law with him as his driver. She has become a new member of the

band, not as an instrumentalist, or vocalist, but as a “Concert Technician”, or “Roadie” as they used

to be called. Buddy Janiszewski also had his wife come along, and Tuddy Janiszewski has also joined the band, although she

was already helping quietly where ever help was needed. So now Yvonne has another “Concert Technician” on her team.

Putting up our band’s sign, placing it in front, or rear of the band, and packing it up after the performance, finding the

closest “hot” outlet and running a power cord to the middle of the band so that we have power available for the various

instrument, vocal, and PA Amplifiers. They also set up the speaker stands, and place the speakers on them. Then they run a

cord back to the amplifier from each speaker. Then come the microphone stands, mikes and cords to connect them to the

amplifier, which they also have to get out and set up.

After the show they work in reverse. Taking down, disconnecting and packing things and getting things ready to be loaded

into our vehicles. What a help– these two ladies have been. Thanks for becoming an important part of the band.

SHORT MEMORIES

If you could turn back the clock you might remember—Boys using a stick to draw a circle in the dirt to play

a game of marbles…Girls wearing either skirts or dresses to school as slacks, pedal pushers, jeans or shorts

were not allowed…Taking our lunch to school with sandwiches wrapped in wax paper, inside a brown paper

bag, stored in the cloak room or your desk. Ice pack coolers were not available and we didn’t get sick…High

top sneakers, usually black or white, were worn for gym…We recited the Lord’s Prayer and the Pledge of

Allegiance to start the school day…Mom took care of our scratches, cuts and bruises with a dab of

Mercurochrome instead of Iodine because of the sting it had…Playing Hide and Seek, Red Light-Green Light,

Mother May I and Kick the Tin Can long after it was dark in the summertime…Seeing Eddie Feigner and his

King & Court four man softball team playing the Upper Bucks All-Star nine man team on Alumni Field…Race

tracks like the Hatfield Speedway, Dorney Park, Sanatoga Speedway, Philadelphia Municipal Stadium and

Langhorne Speedway…Local drivers from Quakertown: Luckey Loux, Dick Rodenberger and

Trumbauersville’s Dutch Thomas raced almost every weekend…The Allentown Cardinals playing in Hess

Stadium on the Seventh Street Pike, now it’s MacArthur Road and home of the Lehigh Valley Mall…

Pennsylvania Dutch radio programs with Assabe and Sabina along with Professor Schnitzel…Well driller Walter

Wondsidler using his dowsing rod (a Y-shaped forked stick from a tree or bush) to locate underground water as

a good location to drill a well…TV antennas popping up like mushrooms on roof tops and the family’s life

revolved around a 12 inch black and white screen. Then a Swanson TV dinner, a three compartment aluminum

tray filled with turkey and all the fixuns, became popular…McDonald’s 15 cent hamburgers (with over 1

million sold) became a fast food craze…Also Davy Crockett’s coonskin cap was a children’s favorite…

Children coming home from school each day and Mom would be there. She stayed home and kept house, as

most mothers did in days gone by…The Fourth of July fire that destroyed Trainer’s Restaurant on Route 309.

That was the end of Trainer’s but was later rebuilt and replaced by Seafood Shanty. Now a McDonald’s is

located there, which is part of a shopping complex named Trainer’s Corner…The Chesterfield cigarette

commercial with Johnny paging “Call for Philip Morris”. The last word was drawn out to “MAW-RISSS” to

grab your attention. Cigarette and tobacco commercials are now against the law…Admission of 25 cents to see

a movie at one of Quakertown’s two downtown theaters, the Karlton and the Palace, was an inexpensive night

out. A quarter also admitted a person to Sunday entertainment at “Sleepy Hollow Ranch” near Spinnerstown.

Names like Roy Rogers, Eddy Arnold, Smiley Burnette, Patsy Montana and many other famous singers and

2017 ELECTIONS

Get out and vote for the 2018 Executive Board. If you would like to run in this election, let one of

the Nomination Committee members know and they will put you on the ballot. The elections will

run from November 1st to November 28th our Covered Dish/ Membership Meeting Day. Votes will

then be counted at end of the day. Your new Board will be announced and introduced at the

December 26th Membership Meeting.

Medicare Part D Enrollment Event

Enrollment events are places you can go to receive direct assistance with prescription plan comparisons and enrollment. Please bring with you the following items: your Medicare card, other insurance cards (i.e. VA,

As Thanksgiving Day rolls around, It brings up some

facts, quite profound. We may think we that we’re poor,

feel like bums, insecure, but in truth, our riches astound.

We have friends and family we love, we have guidance

from heaven above. We have so much more than we sell

in a store, We’re wealthy, when push comes to shove. So

add up your blessings, I say, make Thanksgiving last

more than a day, Enjoy what you’ve got, realize it’s a lot,

and you’ll make all your cares go away !

Activity Center Band and they are looking for new

members. They practice on Wednesday morning

at 10:00 a.m.

Resources and activities in such areas as Entertainment, Education, Nutrition, Health and Travel. Our customers are adults

55+ in the broad community of Upper Bucks County, as well as community business and groups that support our goals.

We also provide a clean, safe and healthy environment for all to enjoy.

Brenda Will Be Here Every Month

We are lucky to have Brenda Happ from

Senator Bob Mensch's’ office here the 4th

Tuesday of each month from 1-2 pm.

Brenda will have a display of

information to help with any problems

you might have. This is the day we have

our Covered Dish and Membership

HALLOWEEN PARTY WITH TAMMY G October 11th

On Wednesday, October 11th we will be having our Halloween Party and we all love Tammy G! Last year we had

some great costumes. This year let your hair down and let your personality show. Don't you dare miss this afternoon

of music, dancing and laughter ! I know some of our party goers have already been talking about their costumes. We will be

voting for the best costumes and there will be door prizes for them. $12.00 per ticket. Please sign up by October 6th.

If coming just to the party, it is $6.00 at the door.

THANKSGIVING PARTY W/ GEORGE BRUNEIO November 15th

George will be playing his music for us on Wednesday, November 15th. Everyone should enjoy our Buffet Feast

at 11:30 am. Buy your tickets early…….This will be a great party. I’m asking everyone to bring in can goods or

box of food. We will be taking all that we collect to Quakertown’s Food Panty. If you have something to be Thankful for, we

would love to hear your story. Looking forward to see at our Thanksgiving Luncheon! Tickets are $12.00 each. Please sign up

by November 10th so we know how many we have coming. If coming just to the party, it is $6.00 at the door

CHRISTMAS PARTY WITH JEFF ROSS December 13th

On Wednesday, December 13th, come out for our Christmas Party with Jeff Ross. Lunch starts at 11:30 am followed

by great music and dancing! Buy your tickets early, this party will be a sellout! Maybe we can even sing some

Christmas Carols! Everyone is welcome to bring in some of your special Christmas cookies. I’m sure everyone has a

special cookie recipe; why not share it with your friends at our party ! Hope to see a lot of our Members for this special party.

Tickets are $12.00 each. Please sign up by December 8th so we know how many we have coming.

If coming just to the party, it is $6.00 at the door.

We could use a few Volunteers to drive Meals on Wheels. We

have a couple days to choose from. Or, maybe just be a fill– in

Cinnamon Monkey Bread

TOTAL TIME: Prep: 20 min. Bake: 35 min. YIELD:16 servings

Ingredients

• 4 tubes (7-1/2 ounces each) refrigerated buttermilk biscuits

• 1/2 cup sugar • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon • 1/2 cup butter, melted 1/2 cup packed brown sugar

Directions

• 1. Cut each biscuit into four pieces; shape into balls. In a small bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon. Roll each ball in cinnamon-sugar. Arrange evenly in a greased 10-in. fluted tube pan. Sprinkle with remaining cinnamon-sugar.

2. Combine butter and brown sugar;

pour over the top. Bake at 350° for 35-

40 minutes or until golden brown. Cool

for 5 minutes before inverting bread

onto a serving platter. Yield: 1 loaf.

The Upper Bucks Activity Center Serves citizens aged 55 and over. Members live in

Quakertown, Richlandtown and Trumbauersville Boroughs, and in Richland, Milford,

Haycock, Springfield, Tinicum, Nockamixon, Durham and Bridgetown Townships.

We also welcome members and guests from other areas.

If you would like to support the Center by being a Member dues are voluntary at $16.00 a Year for 2017.

Shop At Redner’s Supermarket

And Save Your Register Tapes!

Redner’s Supermarkets are donating a penny to our

Center for every dollar that you spend at their store. If

you would like to help us this way, pick up a Redner’s Pump Perks

Card. Even if you have an old card, you have to fill out an application

at the store and get a new one. As you check out, the card will be acti-

vated. The words Save A Tape will be printed on your register receipt.

Save all of your register tapes and bring them in to us. Please do NOT

use any highlighter over the words. We send them in and then receive

our 1% donation to the Center.
