WINDOWS OF HISTORYThanks to Pauline Tache who recently represented

Generations in the Souderton-Telford Main

Streets Windows of History project. Pauline painted her interpretation of Souderton past, present, and future on one of the original Univest

building windows. Her artwork featured our original and present

buildings, Generations Participants, and our

painting instructor Louisa Wismer. See photo on p. 2.

Come see a group of students from North Penn High School’s JROTC program present an Armed Exhibition and military medley as well as POW/MIA and Flag Folding ceremonies. We will also honor Veterans during the ceremony.** The JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) program at North Penn High School is a leadership, character building, self discipline, and citizenship program. The students will join us for lunch after their presentation. Please stop by our front desk to register for the free program or call 215-723-5841. Be sure to let us know if you’ll be staying for our noon meal. **For some, Veterans Day is a patriotic and positive way to remember their military service. But for others, Veteran’s Day (and every day) can be marked by difficult memories.

Honest and true patriotism calls us to honor veterans all across this spectrum, remembering that for some their service was life-enriching and for others it was life-changing in traumatic and painful ways. Please visit Generations in November and look for our “Witting Tree,” which is a bare branch hung with 22 dog tags to represent the number of daily suicides in the veteran community. On a separate occasion, we also hope to host a Witting Tree ceremony and pay tribute to those veterans whose continuing suffering leads them to take their own lives. Sadly, many of our veterans have seen and lived the worst and need our arms around them as they return. Our gratitude must run that deep…that we can honor both their victories and their pain.

Behind the Cookbook with StacyGenerations is pleased to welcome Stacy Bivighouse to our team. As the Meals on Wheels kitchen supervisor, she is responsible for helping to

oversee meal service to over160 homebound community residents in the North Penn and Indian Valley areas each day. In this role, Stacy also helps to organize and oversee the efforts of nearly 250 volunteers. Stacy is no stranger to the operations in a busy kitchen. Beginning at age 15, Stacy worked for her grandparents for 15 years at their deli, Nannys Family Store. There, she developed a love of both food and people. Both of Stacy’s previous jobs were family oriented, and Stacy is now excited to be a part of the Generations family. Stacy says that if she had 30 extra minutes each day, she would spend it doing exactly what she's already doing - cooking! "Cooking is my favorite thing to do! I love to make food for my family and for others. It is extremely therapeutic for me.” This might be because she grew up around others who were also itchin’ to be in the kitchen. "I remember my Nan always having nectarines, peaches, and plums when we would go to her house. I also loved when my family would get together

and make homemade pierogis. We could never wait until we were done so we could cook them up and eat them!" Nowadays, Stacy enjoys dining out at the Washington House with her mom for a special treat. She cites their wedge salad with bleu cheese dressing and their arancini (fried rice balls stuffed with peas and cheese) as the most recent "amazing" meal she's had the pleasure of eating. Stacy is excited about making healthy, tasty, and appealing meals for our Meals on Wheels Clients. When asked what has surprised her most about working at Generations, Stacy noted what an integral role the volunteers play in the daily operations here. "The volunteers who donate their time and hard work amaze me, and it makes me glad to be a part of this organization." When Stacy is not busy in the Generations kitchen, or facing the dreaded task of folding laundry at home, she enjoys the rare occasions when she is home relaxing together with her husband and both of her teenage children. They like to eat dinner together, watch a movie, or just sit around and talk! Well Stacy, whether you are spending time with your family at home, or with you new-found family at Generations, we wish you much success with your love of food and people, and we’re glad you’re here to share it with us!

AARP Safe Driving Friday, November 9, 9:00amFour Hour Refresher Course

Even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills.

Join instructor Judy Pfanders to learn defensive driving techniques. Take the AARP driver safety refresher course and learn the current rules of the road and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today's increasingly challenging driving environment. Get the tools you need to drive safely on today’s roads, and remain independent for many years to come.

Fee: $15.00 AARP Members; $20.00 Non-members. To register, stop by our front desk or call

215-723-5841.

Most insurance companies require a full eight hour course to be taken initially. Once completed, a four hour refresher course should be taken at least every three years after that. We recommend contacting your insurance company to determine exact requirements. We will offer the refresher course again in January,

2019 and the full course in April, 2019.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! It’s the time when we don our reindeer antlers and hoof around Souderton. The 5K Reindeer Run & Walk is one of our most important fundraisers of the year and benefits our Center and Meals on Wheels programming (last year we raised over $10,000)! If running or walking in a 5K event seems a bit ambitious for you, you could still support us by participating in our one mile fun walk or even by taking a walk around the block!

So, whether you want to volunteer, participate, or watch; whether you want to come out to stay in shape, stay connected,

or help us stay in business, we want you! Just like Santa, we have some gifts to deliver around town. And also like Santa, we couldn’t do it without our Reindeer…..

We’re looking for volunteers to:

• Help distribute flyers or information prior to the race.

• Participate in our Fun Walk - even if you can only walk around the block - or around the building!

• Make a sign for runners: “Thanks for supporting us!”

• Donate raffle items for prize drawings. If you patronize a local business and think they would be willing to donate something, let us know!

• Donate items for runner goody bags. • Tell family, friends, and neighbors that we need their support! For volunteer, sponsor, or participation information, please contact Amy Stover: 215-723-5841. Photo: Alvin Serota

Perk Up Your Antlers for the Reindeer Run/WalkSaturday, December 1, 2018

Sound is one thing. Making sense is everything. The sounds your ears receive are sent to your brain, which translates them into meaning. When you have hearing loss, your brain tries to fill in the gaps of the sounds you don’t hear, and this process can be very exhausting.

New hearing technology has made it possible to put less stress on your brain and allow you to improve your mental health.

In mid-life, hearing loss is a risk factor for developing dementia that you can do something about. In fact, more than a third of dementia cases can possibly be prevented or delayed (Livingston et al, 2017). This is because the risk of developing dementia is partly influenced by lifestyle factors, which reduce or increase the risk.

Smoking, depression, and physical inactivity are all potentially modifiable risk factors. However, untreated hearing loss is the single most

important modifiable risk factor for dementia.

Join us at Generations for an educational session about Brain Hearing presented by Associates in Hearing’s Director of Audiology, Dr. Patricia Reiff. Free program. Please register. Stop by our front desk or call 215-723-5841.

News & Notes

It's time to hit the trails and participate in the Montgomery County Trail Challenge! The Challenge will run until late fall, providing plenty of time for people of all ages to experience the seasonal changes in Montgomery County's vast network of trails and parks. This event is open to all.

Thirteen trails that connect greenways, waterways, and heritage corridors throughout Montgomery County are part of the challenge. When you visit the various trails over the next few months, you will find a unique symbol at the trailhead to record on your official trail challenge card. This year Montgomery County will be recognizing three levels of

achievement with the challenge (see box at right).

Plus, you can visit two trails, parks, or county historic sites of your choosing and receive credit towards an achievement level. You don't have to walk or bike the entire trail to get credit for the challenge - just visit, enjoy, and earn your recognitions! The real incentive is the benefit of participating in a total body wellness activity that is also a treat for the senses.

Building community together

Generations’ recent four-day trip to Ocean City, MD proved that seniors really do have “more fun!” The weather fully cooperated on our adventure, even with Hurricane Florence looming in the background. The first night we had dinner at the Angler. Our boat trip was cancelled, but we still enjoyed a lovely evening on the boardwalk. Tuesday was all about animals with a visit to Salisbury Zoo and then the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art. We learned the history of decoy duck carving and how it developed into the art of bird carving (see back cover for photo). We also stopped at the Country House Store. Dinner that evening was at Red Roost and, to our surprise, the parking lot was under water, but the food and the entertainment were still afloat. We signed and hung our dollar on the wall, so look for it if you ever visit there. The next morning we enjoyed a beautiful guided tour on Assateague Island. On Wednesday afternoon some enjoyed Tanger Outlets while some chose to relax on the beach.

Thursday morning we packed up and headed to Ocean Downs Casino before heading home. We even had some lucky winners! We all enjoyed exploring OCMD together. We shared laughter (and great food) together and made some new friends along the way. The overnight trips at Generations are fun and they also serve a very important role for the Center. Since the reinstatement of the overnight travel program a few years ago, we have raised nearly $25,000. This trip netted just over $2000 to be used to support the many programs offered at Generations of Indian Valley.
