SeniorS’ Chat

Don’s Column Hello, Happy Hands Members and Friends,

Happy Easter! How do we help Senior Citizens celebrate Easter holidays?

There are a lot of ways [Source: https://seniors.lovetoknow.com/Nursing_Home_Activities_Ideas].

Symbolic Celebrations -- If a Senior Citizen is in a nursing home, give her/him an Easter lily to put into a

window. The Easter Lily symbolizes hope and life. You can also give seeds, or plant flowers with a

Senior Citizen to mark the beginning of spring. You can take her/him on a bird watching trip. Candles

can also be lit as symbols of new life and rebirth.

Arts and Crafts -- The Senior Citizens can participate in egg decorating by using plastic eggs. They can

add stickers or glitter glue and put candy inside. When done, those eggs can be donated to a preschool or

community organization for a children’s Easter egg hunt. Making Easter baskets is another way to

celebrate the season, as well as baking and sharing Easter cookies.

Why Celebrate Easter? Celebrating Easter is a great way to remember the past and welcome a new season.

Mark your calendar for April 3rd Luncheon at NVRC. See page 2 for more information.

Stay Happy with Our Awesome Hands!

Nancy Rarus (DSA president) wanted to share this with you

all. This link [https://youtu.be/1jOUjpZ8ZzA] shows a very

good short film about how to find an accessible assistive

program. It could also be a nursing home or an Assisted

Living Facility, if you are looking to move from your home

to a place that would be good for you. Save this on your

mobile phone so you can share it with the assistive program

director! And the nursing home director!

Dr. Poorna Kushalnagar, director of Deaf Health Communication and Quality of Life Center

at Gallaudet University, will share preliminary results from her Deaf Aging Study on April

17 at 10:30AM-11:30AM, with time afterwards for questions. The study is funded by the

National Institute on Aging (NIA/NIH). The Deaf Aging Study collects primary data from

deaf older adults who were born deaf or became deaf before age 13.

At 12:00PM-1:00PM, Happy Hands will provide pizza for lunch. Choices will be ExtravaganZZa, MeatZZa,

Pacific Veggie, Honolulu Hawaiian, Ultimate Pepperoni, and Wisconsin 6 Cheese.

During 1:00PM-3:00PM, Dr. Kushalnagar’s team will be available to administer Deaf Aging Survey for those

who meet eligibility. Each person who takes this survey will receive $25 cash. If you want more information

about the study, you can visit http://www.deafhealthqol.com/deaf-aging-project.html or send email to Dr.

Kushalnagar at [email protected]. Her assistant, Dr. Zach Featherstone, will reach out via VP to

Dr. Kushalnagar received her B.A. in Psychology at Gallaudet University; M.A. in Psychology at the

University of Houston; and Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology at the University of Houston. She completed a

NIH diversity postdoctoral training in patient reported outcomes research at the Seattle Quality of Life Center

at University of Washington and a NIH T32 postdoctoral fellowship in preventive medicine at the University of

Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Dr. Kushalnagar teaches Psychology, and Health Disparities in the Deaf/HH Community at Gallaudet
