Preferred Citation: Item description, UTS1: Donald Woods Shriver, Jr. Papers, 1946-2017, series #, box #, and folder #, The Burke Library at Union Theological Seminary, Columbia University in the City of New York.

Biography Donald Woods Shriver, Jr., was born in Norfolk, VA, in 1927. He was drafted into army at the end of World War II, serving briefly in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Afterward, he returned to school, earning four degrees in 12 years. He was educated at Davidson College (A.B. 1951), Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA (B.D. 1955), Yale Divinity School (S.T.M. 1957). After graduating from Yale, where he wrote a thesis on church membership in 17th-century England, he was ordained in the Presbyterian Church and took a ministerial position at a young congregation in Gastonia, NC, where he ministered from 1956 to 1959. Following his ministry there, he returned to New England to pursue his doctorate at Harvard University (Ph.D. 1962), the dissertation for which would later serve as the root of his 1995 book, An Ethic for Enemies. In 1962, he was appointed Presbyterian University Minister at North Carolina State University (1962-1972). He joined the faculty in 1964 as a director of a program called the “Experimental Study of Religion in Society,” a position he held through 1968, when he became director of the University Program on Science and Society. In 1972, he left NC State and became Professor of Ethics and Society at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, where he also directed the Doctor of Ministry program. He taught there until 1975, when he became the 13th president of Union Theological Seminary and the William E. Dodge Professor of Applied Christianity. He retired from the presidency in 1991 and continued teaching at UTS until his full retirement in 1996. The beginning of Shriver’s presidency was in a period of turmoil for Union, which was struggling with financial challenges. He is widely thought of as having united a divided faculty and student body with his decisive leadership style, while simultaneously steering the seminary into sounder financial waters. He was also a champion of interdisciplinary work in his time, encouraging a strong relationship with the Jewish Theological Seminary and Columbia University. This focus is perhaps best symbolized in his teaching style; he often co-taught courses with faculty members from other disciplines and programs, notably including a partnership with Columbia business

professor James Kuhn, which culminated in their 1991 book, Beyond Success: Corporations and their Critics in the 1990s, the product of several years of teaching business ethics together. In addition to earning six honorary degrees in the course of his career, Shriver also won the 18th Grawemeyer Award in Religion (2009), which honors “highly significant contributions to religious and spiritual understanding” for his 2005 book, Honest Patriots. He also served as President of the Society of Christian Ethics and as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, beginning in 1988. He was a vocal and frequent contributor to newspapers, penning many letters to editors.

Collection Scope and Content Note This collection is composed of the academic and personal papers of Donald Woods Shriver, Jr. from the course of both his student and professional academic careers. Consisting primarily of printed and typed material, the documents here attest to his teaching and research activity. Included are a variety of course notes and materials (both from Shriver’s student work and as a teacher); a great deal of research matter, including clippings and other publications, as well as many notes for his books; a substantial collection of offprints of Shriver’s own publications and speeches, as organized by him; academic and professional correspondence, as well as other papers gathered in his extensive international travels. The collection also contains a number of personal documents, including some of the papers of his wife, Peggy Ann Leu Shriver, family photographs, and letters.

Andrew McLaren 12/7/2017

The papers are organized in 5 series with 11 subseries:

Series 1: Writings, Speeches, and Sermons, 1954-2017 (24 boxes, 11.5 lin. ft.) This series covers the breadth of Shriver’s public output as a minister, scholar, and public intellectual, including drafts and offprints of his articles, research material from his files, notes and drafts of book chapters, and notes and texts for the many sermons and speeches he gave. Save for subseries 1A, the file Shriver kept of his own publications and speeches, the papers were in no obvious order at accession, so they have been rearranged here by type of material (publications; speeches; sermons). These other series include most of the material that Shriver published after his retirement from the presidency of Union Theological Seminary in 1991.

o Subseries 1A: “Pub File”: Academic Publications and Speeches, 1954-1991 (9 boxes, 4.25 lin. ft.) This subseries, which Shriver called his “Pub File,” was his official collection of his own publications and addresses, kept by his secretary at UTS. Some of the files contain drafts and offprints of the subsequent publications, and many are annotated with Shriver’s own hand. File titles marked in “quotes” are carried over from Shriver’s files, with dates added now. Publication information has been added in the finding aid only.

o Subseries 1B: Other Publications, 1964-2017 (5 boxes, 2.25 lin. ft.) This subseries is comprised of the drafts and annotated off-prints of Shriver’s publications that were not filed in the main series of publications and talks (i.e., subseries 1A). Notably included here are drafts and notes for each chapter of his two most significant books, Ethic for Enemies (1995) and Honest Patriots (2005).

o Subseries 1C: Other Speeches, 1963-2005 (5 boxes, 2.25 lin. ft.) Filed in this subseries are notes and texts for lectures and addresses given by Shriver, including addresses as Union Theological Seminary events, as well as invited lectures at churches and seminaries throughout the country. They are organized chronologically and, where possible, some indication of the venue has been made. The subjects of the speeches reflect the breadth of Shriver’s interests, but certain themes are recurring, particularly the role of Christian ethics and the possibilities for forgiveness in public arenas. Of note are the several named lectures he gave, including the Lowell Lecture at Harvard Divinity (1981) and the Buchdal Lecture at North Carolina State (1983).

o Subseries 1D: Sermons, 1954-2003 (6 boxes, 3 lin. ft.)

This subseries includes sermons delivered by Dr. Shriver from the duration of his career, from his first sermons given in seminary to his last delivered sermons in the early 2000s. There are two parts to this series: one was a grouping of files organized by books of the Bible, with each file containing sermons and exegetical notes, often on the original texts. These are primarily from the 1960s and earlier, corresponding to his preaching career in Gastonia and as university minister at North Carolina State. Roughly around the time he began teaching, the sermons

switched to being kept individually and were found throughout the accessioned material. Thus, these later sermons are listed chronologically by year below with their titles. Where dates are uncertain, they are organized alphabetically. Note also that Subseries 1A includes a few of Shriver’s sermons as well.

Series 2: Research, 1953-2011 (15 boxes, 6.75 lin. ft.) This series consists of a collection of notes, clippings, and other research materials, covering a number of Shriver’s scholarly projects. Particularly well represented is material that corresponds thematically to Honest Patriots. Of note is the material from Shriver’s year at the American Academy in Berlin.

Series 3: Learning and Teaching, 1952-2003 (17 boxes [1 oversize], 9.5 lin. ft.) This series contains three groups of papers, separated into three subseries. The first collects papers from Shriver’s student career; the second, papers from his teaching career; and the third, papers from his career as an administrator at universities. Broadly, this series complements the first two series, mirroring the concerns pursued in his publications and research. For instance, the research for his books and publications often appears in his teaching materials; and many of the themes in his publications appear early in his notes as a students.

o Subseries 3A: Shriver’s Student Notes and Papers, 1952-1963 (6 boxes [1 oversize], 4.5 lin. ft.) This subseries is comprised of the substantial amount of material Shriver kept from his studies at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, Yale, and Harvard. Included here are course notes, readings, a number of his term papers, both his masters and doctoral theses, and other study material. Of note in this series are the papers from courses with noted academics like Talcott Parsons, Richard Reinhart Niebuhr, and Paul Tillich. Also of interest are the oversize diagrams of Christian intellectual and church history drawn up by Shriver for a course he took at Union Theological (VA).

o Subseries 3B: Shriver’s Course Notes and Materials, 1962-2003 (7 boxes, 3.25 lin. ft.) This series contains lecture notes, course readings, case studies, and many other forms of teaching material from the length of Shriver’s teaching career. Significantly, there is the substantial amount of material from Shriver’s business ethics courses taught with Columbia business professor, James Kuhn, which shaped their jointly published book. Also of note are course notes for classes he taught based on his own book, Ethic for Enemies.

o Subseries 3C: Administrative Papers, 1955-2001 (4 boxes, 1.75 lin. ft.) This subseries contains papers relating to the various administrative roles Shriver played during his long career, including at North Carolina State, the Candler School of Theology, Union Theological Seminary, and as an elected member of the Presbyterian Church’s (USA) Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy. Notably, it contains a significant collection of official reports, newspaper clippings,

and other documents relating to Shriver’s time as director of both the Experimental Study of Religion and Society (1964-1968) and the University Program in Science and Society (1978-1971) at North Carolina State. Also included here is a folder of papers from Shriver’s time as an alternative delegate to the contentious 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Series 4: Shriver’s Travels, 1969-2013 (3 boxes, 1.25 lin. ft.) This series contains an assortment of papers and ephemera from Shriver’s professional and academic travels, including tours abroad taken while president of UTS and programs and notes from international conferences he attended. The papers from conferences at which he read a paper or made an address are filed in Subseries 1A; everything in this subseries is from conferences where it appears he was not presenting.

Series 5: Personal and Family Papers, 1946-2010 (6 boxes, 2.75 lin. ft) This series is comprised of assorted papers from Shriver’s early and family life, including correspondence, school papers (both his and his children’s), photos, and other ephemera. It was originally scattered throughout the broader collection of papers, and has been organized here chronologically.

o Subseries 5A: Correspondence and Ephemera, 1946-2010 (4 boxes, 1.75 lin. ft.) This subseries includes personal ephemera relating to Shriver’s early life, including some his first forays into academic writing as a high school student. Also contained here are assorted photos, certificates, and other memorabilia, including mementos from the 2009 ceremony for his Grawemeyer award. The subseries is rounded out by a broad collection of Shriver’s correspondence, both personal and academic which he collected in folders by year.

o Subseries 5B: Family Papers, 1951-2010 (2 boxes, 1 lin. ft.) Included among Shriver’s accessioned papers are a significant amount of material from his wife and children. Included here are a small collection of Peggy Shriver’s personal and professional papers, including a full series of the journal EcuLink, which she edited, and a number of diaries from travels she took with her husband. Also included here are ephemera from Shriver’s children’s childhood and a rather lengthy series of correspondence with their daughter, the award-winning novelist Lionel Shriver.

Series 6: Audiovisual Materials, 1951-2009 (7 boxes, 3.25 lin ft.) This series contains all the audiovisual material found among Shriver’s paper, including photos, audio and video recordings, and computer storage materials. Of note in this collection are the many family and personal photos. Also included are backup disks for both Ethic for Enemies and Honest Patriots.

Processing Metal clips and staples were removed from materials and folded items were flattened. Materials were placed in new acid-free folders and boxes. Acidic items were separated from one another by interleaving with acid-free paper as needed. Any items in an advanced state of deterioration were placed in Mylar envelopes. Further Sources A handful of Shriver’s other papers are also held at North Carolina State University in two collections. The Donald Woods Shriver, Jr. Papers, 1965-1969 contains three sermons or essays by Shriver during his time at NC State, including one related to his participation in the 1968 Democratic Convention. Other papers related to Shriver’s career can be found in the NC State collection University Program on Science and Society Records, 1964-1971, of which Shriver was the director for a few years.

1 I think this is a draft of a chapter that went into Beyond Success. The title was original to Shriver’s folder and does not match

the title of the chapter, which makes me think it was an earlier title of the book. 2 Title original to folder.
