Donald McNeely Center for Entrepreneurship is celebrating the completion of its 6th year. This report summarizes the achievements of students, alumni, faculty, staff and volun-teers during the 2009-2010 school year dedicated to achieving our mission.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP STUDIES PROGRAM COMPLETES SIXTH YEAR

InAugust2009anewgroupof12selected students became the 6th cohort ofE-Scholars.Duringthistwo-yearprogramE-Scholarslearnandpracticeentrepreneurship as they complete three courses in entrepreneurship studies and develop detailed venture plans. They also traveltoentrepreneurialhotspots.Andtheygethands-onexperiencebystartingor leading a student-run venture or being an apprentice of an entrepreneur alum. Studentshaveoveradozenvolunteermentors as well as staff members who provide individualized coaching and expertadvice.

Sincebeginningin2004,theE-Scholarsprogramhasengagedover80studentsfromboththeCollegeofSaintBenedictandSaintJohn’sUniversity.Duringthepastsixyears,studentsandstudent teams started 10 ventures and over55studentsexperiencedintensiveapprenticeships with entrepreneurs in business and nonprofit ventures. E-ScholarshavetraveledtoHongKong,SouthernChina,SiliconValleyandSanFrancisco,KansasCity,Phoenix,Seattle,DenverandofcoursetheSt.CloudandTwinCitiesareastovisitbusinessesdem-onstrating entrepreneurship.

SIX STUDENTS WIN THE 2010 ERIC REGO BIG IDEA COMPETITION

TheBigIdeacompetitionchallengesstudents to share their ideas and dreams to improve the world or the things in it. Individualsorteamssubmitaone-pageventure idea description and present the idea in a 90 second “elevator pitch”. This year the competition was a kick off eventfortheScholarshipandCreativ-ity Day celebration of student achieve-mentatCSB/SJU.Twenty-fivestudentscompeted before an audience of over 30 students and faculty.

SUMMER CAMP FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT

InJuly2009,theMcNeelyCenterfor Entrepreneurship hosted Minnesota BusinessVenture(MBV)summercampforthefourthyear.LedbyBestPrep,MBVisaone-weekresidentialcampatSaintJohn’sprovidingopportunityfor high school students to learn about business, financial literacy, entrepreneur-ship and career directions. Over 150 high school students from across Min-nesotaspentaweekatSaintJohn’s.Staff,students and volunteers from our Center assisted in ensuring it was a successful week. Last year 91percent of those at-tending reported they are more likely to attendcollegeaftertheexperience.Someof those attending decided to apply to CSB/SJUfortheircollegeeducation.

JUST IN TIME LEARNINGThe core premise of student venture

support from the McNeely Center is tocapturethemomentofexperienceand add to it concepts and principals that create new knowledge useful for a lifetime.Studentsusuallyoperateinsidetheir comfort zone, hearing lectures, writing homework assignments, read-ing class assignments, and participating in class discussion. The Entrepreneurial experiencesofferedthroughtheCenterengage students in ways which enable themtocontinuallyoperatejustoutsidetheir comfort zone where they must test their skills and knowledge in real world situations.

The five ongoing student-started student-led ventures linked to the Center have at least 50 percent new leaders every year. This year over 20 students had the chance to test their leadership skills in these ventures. Each team receives help from the staff and volunteers of the Center such as strategic planning facilita-tion, team discussion management, and management tools for success.

Beginninginthefallof2010,theseexperiencebasedlearningopportuni-tieswillbeexpandedintoanacademiccourse—thatwillallowevenmorefocused educational opportunity tied into the real world work of leading a venture.

VOLUNTEERS HELP MAKE IT HAPPEN

Over 60 volunteers help the Center deliverqualityprograms.Seventeenalumswithawidevarietyofcareerexpe-riences are Center Mentors. They come to campus regularly on Wednesdays to consult with our students about their business ventures and share career advice. Last year these volunteers donated 100 hours of time.

Fourtimesayearpanelsofalumvol-unteers listen to presentations on venture ideas, feasibility analyses, or venture plans. One of these is at a national com-petition,heldinDenver,ofE-ScholarsfromallthreecollegesofferingE-Schol-ars.Atotalof20volunteersdonatedover100 hours in preparing and participating on these panels.

Thirty-five alums and friends of the CenterhostsitevisitsforE-ScholarsintheSt.Cloudarea,SanFrancisco,SiliconValley,HongKong,andtheTwinCities.Atthesevisitsstudentslearnthecareer path of the alum, how the venture started and its current strengths and challenges.
