Founded in 1855 as the nation’s first land-grant university, MSU served as the prototypefor 69 land-grant institutions later establishedunder the Morrill Act of 1862 and was the firstinstitution of higher learning in the nation toteach scientific agriculture. Today, MichiganState has grown into a comprehensiveresearch university with 1,993 tenure systemfaculty, 33,966 undergraduate, 7,732graduate, and 1,340 professional students.In the previous academic year, MSU granted6,687 bachelor’s degrees, 1,842 master’sdegrees, and 726 doctoral and professionaldegrees.
Our campus is a unique blend of thetraditional and the innovative within a park-like landscape adjacent to East Lansing.MSU property holdings include many areasdevoted to experimental farms, natural areas,and a botanical garden. The MSU Librarieshave an extensive research collection and issupported by fourteen branch librariesproviding specialized materials. TheUniversity’s interdisciplinary researchcenters and programs allow MSU graduatestudents to cross traditional boundaries.

Fees are assessed on a credit-hour basis,except for graduate-professional studentfees, which are assessed on a term orsemester basis. More than 3,300 assistantships in variousfields are held by eligible graduate students.Graduate assistantships provide a waiver ofcourse tuition for 9 graduate credits in Fall,9 in Spring, and 4 in Summer, (additionalcredits are charged at the resident rate),waiver of matriculation fees, and includeshealth insurance.
Graduate assistants must be activelypursuing degree programs and makingsatisfactory progress toward their degrees.A graduate assistant’s responsibilitiesrequire 10 hours per week for a quarter-timeappointment and 20 hours per week for ahalf-time appointment.
Students admitted to regular graduatestudies at MSU who plan to seek anassistantship or other financial assistanceshould consult their department or school.Since most graduate assistantships andfellowships are awarded by departments,beginning in February for the followingacademic year, it is essential thatapplications and supporting documents besubmitted early to ensure adequateconsideration.

A typical annual budget (August-May) would be $14,914 for a Michigan residentstudent and $19,132 for a non-resident. Miscellaneous expenses will varydepending on student need. The Counseling Center offersprofessional counseling to MSU students ofall ages who are in the pursuit of academicand personal goals. Programs includeindividual and group counseling, testing,multicultural issues, substance abuseassessment, and sexual assault crisis andsafety education. There are three housing options: theOwen Graduate Center, UniversityApartments, or off-campus housing.Although there are no deadlines for housingapplications, students are encouraged toapply as early as possible.
Owen Graduate Center is designed tomeet the needs of single graduate students.Rooms are completely furnished and includelinens and private telephones. Occupants oftwo rooms share an adjoining bathroom andshower. Housekeeping service is providedon a weekly basis. The hall has a lounge,recreational areas, laundry facilities, andcafeteria. MSU also provides more than 2,000partially furnished one- or two-bedroomapartments on campus intended for marriedstudents and their families. Admission to a program leading to a master’s or doctoral degree requires completion ofa bachelor’s degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree, as well as high scholasticstanding and suitable preparation for the intended field of study.
