Some people lovewinter while otherscan't wait for the warmair of spring to makeits triumphant return. For the latter, cabinfever can become aproblem as winter pro-gresses.
Cabin fever is thefeeling people get whenthey are relegated tospending long periodsof time indoors. Be-cause winter weathercan be harsh, cabinfever most often occursin the winter, when theweather outside dis-courages people fromspending time out-doors or opening theirwindows to let fresh airin. Though there'snothing men andwomen can do aboutthe weather, they cantake steps to quell cab-in fever and avoid thewintertime blues.
Around the HouseThere are plenty of
ways to make a cabinless conducive to cabinfever.
* Let the sunshine in.Cold air outside makesit foolish and potential-ly unhealthy to openthe windows. Buthomeowners can stilllet the sunshine out-side those windows in.Pull the curtains backand open the blinds tolet as much light aspossible into a homethroughout the wintermonths.
* Work by the win-dow. More and morepeople now telecom-mute to work, whichcan make them moresusceptible to cabinfever during the win-ter months. Choosean airy room with lotsof windows to houseyour home office. You'll want your deskto face the windowsduring the workday soyou can benefit fromthe midday sun.
* Improve yourhome's aroma. Whilethe validity of aro-matherapy remainsopen for debate, im-proving a home's aro-ma during the wintermonths can removethe musty smell thatforms when a homehas been poorly venti-lated for weeks oreven months. Sup-porters of aromather-
apy suggest that someessential oils, includ-ing lavender and pep-permint, improveone's mood.
Embrace ActivityMany people feel
winter is a time to hi-bernate, which canmake them more sus-ceptible to cabinfever. But even whenthe weather outsideisn't conducive to abackyard pool party, men and women canstill stay active tofend off cabin fever.
* Exercise regularly.Regular exercise hasboth physical andmental benefits, thelatter of which can beespecially valuable tothose hoping to quellcabin fever. Exercisereleases certain neu-rotransmitters in thebrain that alleviatepain and improve
mood. Regular exer-cise during the wintermonths can reducethe risk of developingcabin fever whilemaking the monthsmore enjoyable aswell.
* Get outdoors. Menand women don't haveto spend hours in agym each day to stayactive during the win-ter months. It's stillpossible to spend am-ple time outdoorswhen the weather iscold. Walk or run whenthe conditions allow orembrace an activitysuch as skiing orsnowboarding to get offthe couch and spendsome quality time out-side.
* Shovel the drive-way. If your body al-lows, shovel your owndriveway when itsnows. When done cor-
rectly, shoveling isgreat exercise, and youmay even cherish thetime you get to spendoutdoors.
If cabin fever is prov-ing especially problem-atic, you might be suf-fering from a conditionknown as seasonal af-fective disorder, orSAD. SAD is a mooddisorder that occurs atthe same time every
year, most often in thewinter, and may be aresult of reduced sero-tonin production relat-ed to decreased expo-sure to sunlight. Alsoknown as seasonal de-pression, SAD canmimic depression, andmen and women whosuspect they might besuffering from SADshould consult aphysician.
QUELL CABIN FEVER TO AVOID WINTERTIME BLUES
Embracing outdoor activities like skiing is one wayto quell cabin fever this winter.

Dear God,I believe our nation as a whole is in need of a New Year’s Prayer
of: Praise, Thankfulness & Forgiveness for this coming year. Mayall who hear and pray these words be reminded that withoutGod our lives and this nation will continue to go downhill unlesswe acknowledge God as Creator and put our trust in Him. I en-courage individuals to rise up and take a stand for moral excel-lence, purity, and the pursuit of the ultimate Truth of the LivingGod.
Sincerely and earnestly praying for our nation,R. C. Weathers
A New Year’s Prayer of: Praise, Thankfulness & ForgivenessPRAISE is what we do. For we bless Thee O’ God for Your
faithfulness throughout this past year. We give praise to YourName; for You are worthy of all honor, glory, and adoration. Youare the Almighty; the everlasting Father. In You and You alonewe find our daily strength. Every waking day, of this comingyear, there shall be glorious praise upon our lips and given untoYou for ever and ever.
For it is in our THANKFULNESS that we acknowledge yournever ending resources for our daily bread. We thank Thee forlife. We thank Thee for breath. We thank Thee for upholding usin times of despair and confusion. In every thing that we en-counter, may our hearts be thankful. You have keep us stead-fast in Your love, and we thank You. You have allowed trials andtesting to come our way that we might strengthen our faith inYou; and we thank You. Even in our doubting minds and unbe-lieving hearts, You saw us through; and we want to thank You.So, as we approach a new year; we look back and see how lov-ing and merciful and kindhearted You have been to us; and wethank You.
Yet, there had been times when we failed to acknowledge, failed to recognize, failed to honor all that You have done for usand we ask for FORGIVENESS. Looking forward, we eagerlyseek Your face in all things. May we sense Your guiding hand,Your gentle touch, Your sweet soft voice as You lead us in hon-oring You.
Guide our nation. Direct our leaders. Empower those who seekYour face. Grant wisdom and allow our minds, our hearts, andour eyes to be open to Your truth.
We truly do PRAISE You with THANKFULNESS in our heartsthat You are a God of mercy, justice, love, and FORGIVENESS.

Winter is a special timeof year for sportsmen. The great outdoors beck-ons men and women inthe wintertime, whenskiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and sled-ding are just a few of themany cold weather activ-ities to entice athletesout of their homes.
Though winter sportscan help fend off cabinfever, those who don'texercise certain safetyprecautions might findthemselves dealing withanother kind of fever.Cold weather can leavemen, women and chil-dren susceptible to ill-ness or injury if theyaren't careful. The fol-lowing are a few safetytips for winter sportsmenwho want to make themost of the coming win-ter sports season.
ClothingInadequate clothing is
one of the easiest ways awinter sportsmen canfall victim to illness orinjury . But the rightclothing can go a longway toward ensuringthis winter sports seasonis fun and illness- andinjury-free.
* Wear protective headgear. Protective headgearcan help sportsmenavoid colds and head in-juries. When venturingoutdoors in the winter, always wear a protectivewool ski cap. Most bodyheat is lost through thehead, but wool caps helpyour body retain warmthon cold days and nights. In addition, sportsmenshould always wear pro-tective headgear whenskiing, sledding, snow-boarding or playing icehockey. Even the mostexperienced sportsmencan suffer a head injurywhen playing a wintersport, but the appropri-ate headgear can preventhead injuries to veteranand novice athletesalike.
* Dress in layers.Dressing in layers is an-other way to stay warmand prevent illness inthe winter months. Kidsare especially suscepti-ble to cold weather, soparents should dressthem in one more layerthan they dress them-selves. When wearingscarves, sportsmenshould tuck theirscarves in so they don't
get tangled with sportingequipment.
* Remove drawstringsfrom kids' clothing.Drawstrings on winterhats, overcoats andpants can prove harmfulto children. These draw-strings can easily gettangled and lead tostrangulation. Parentsshould remove all draw-strings from kids' winterclothing before kids par-ticipate in winter sports.
Ice skating & hockey
Winter is a great timeto go ice skating or playsome hockey. However, ice sports like skatingand hockey can be espe-cially dangerous, and it'swise for adults and chil-dren to be as cautious aspossible when getting insome ice time.
* Beware of thin ice.Ice that forms on movingwaters, including riversand creeks, is never safeenough to skate on.Such waters should al-ways be avoided no mat-ter how thick the ice mayappear. When going iceskating or playing hock-ey outdoors, only do so
on waters that are su-pervised and have beentested and approved forskating.
* Skate with the crowdand never skate alone.Skating alone might giveyou all the room in theworld to perform a figureeight, but skating aloneleaves you with no back-up should the ice breakand you fall in or if youinjure yourself in a fall. When skating, neverskate against the crowd.
Skiing and snowboarding
Skiing and snowboard-ing are immensely popu-lar in the winter, butthat popularity shouldnot overshadow howdangerous these activi-ties can be.
* Get instruction. Skiresorts typically requireguests with no previousskiing or snowboardingexperience to get lessonsbefore they can take tothe slopes. These lessonsare a must for noviceskiers and snowboardersand even those athleteswith no recent experi-ence on the slopes.
* Be especially cau-
tious when entering orexiting the ski lift. Skilifts pose a significant in-jury risk, so skiers andsnowboarders should al-ways be attentive whenentering or exiting thelift.
* Don't allow youngchildren to snowboard. Many of today's young-sters prefer snowboard-ing to skiing. However, the American Academyof Pediatrics recom-mends that children sev-en years of age andyounger should notsnowboard.
* Don't be in a hurry.Skiing or snowboardingtoo fast increases thechance you will lose con-trol and cause injury toyourself or others. Go ata slower, more relaxedpace and take in all ofthe beautiful sceneryalong the way.
SleddingSledding is a great way
to have some fun in thewinter snow. But eventhough sledding is oftenseen as a carefree activi-ty, it can be risky as well.
* Never sled near traf-fic. Sledding near traffic
is a definite no-no, as itrisks the lives of sleddersand motorists alike. Al-ways make sure you sledin an insulated area faraway from roadways.
X* Sled feet-first or sit-ting up. Sledding feet-first or sitting up greatlyreduces a sledder's riskof suffering a head orneck injury. Never sledwhile lying down headfirst.
* Never sled on ice.Sledding on ice can
cause injuries and makeit difficult to control asled. When sledding, only do so on packedsnow.
* Do not allow a sled tobe pulled by a vehicle.Being pulled by a vehiclewhile on a sled mightseem like fun, but it'snearly impossible for on-coming traffic to see asledder behind a vehicle, and it's very easy for thesled to fishtail into on-coming traffic.

Snowy weather can be a time forfun, especially for avid skiers orchildren who relish spending daysoff from school tossing snowballsand building snow forts. Manyadults, however, do not look for-ward to the snow as much asyoungsters do. Snow can be haz-ardous when driving, but puttingsnow tires on a vehicle can im-prove vehicle safety.
According to information fromthe National Highway Traffic Safe-ty Administration, roughly 115people die every day in vehiclecrashes in the United States. Each winter, snowfall compoundstreacherous road conditions, in-creasing the risk of accidents.
It is important to know how todrive when weather conditions aredangerous. It is also wise to outfita vehicle to reduce its risk of slip-ping and sliding on icy, snowyroads. Here are some tips to fol-low.
* Limit time spent driving in thesnow. Avoid driving during snow-storms or directly after wheneverpossible. Snow not only makesroads slick, but falling flakes canimpair a driver's visibility and re-duce his or her response time. Tryto wait until snow-clearing teamshave salted, plowed and sandedroads before venturing out.
* Be sure you can see clearly.Clear off the snow from the wind-shield, side mirrors and windowsso it does not compromise yourview. Also, top off the windshieldfluid so you will be able to clearsnow and salt kick-up from yourwindshield. Look for a washer flu-id that has an antifreeze compo-nent, otherwise, your washer jets
and wiper blades could be ren-dered useless.
* Drive slowly. Reduce yourspeed when driving in inclementweather. It can be more difficult tostop or maneuver around a poten-tial obstacle when conditions areless than ideal. Traveling at a highspeed will increase the risk of ac-cidents.
* Leave enough room betweenyou and other motorists. Tailgat-ing is responsible for many acci-dents, even when there is no snowon the ground. In inclementweather, it can take longer to slowor stop the car after pressing onthe brakes. Having an additionalspace between your car and theone in front of you helps you avoida collision.
* Be aware of black ice. Black icegets its name from its veritable in-visibility. It is so thin and hard tospot, it just looks like the blackasphalt of the road. Black icetends to form in areas that havehad snow or ice melt, which thenrefreezes at night when tempera-tures drop. Be extra cautious onturns and on highway exit and en-trance ramps, where black ice fre-quently forms.
* Steer your car into the skid.Remain calm and do not panicand jam on the brakes if your carstarts to skid. Slamming on thebrakes will only exacerbate theskid. Rather, take your foot off theaccelerator, allowing the car tonaturally slow down as you turnyour wheels into the direction thecar is skidding. This should helpright the car and get you back ontrack.
* Invest in snow tires. Those who
live in especially snowy climatesand do a lot of driving would bewise to purchase snow tires. Snowtires, also called winter tires, havespecial tread patterns that offerbetter traction in snow and ice. They also are made from softerrubber compounds than regulartires that retain their flexibility incold weather, allowing the tire toconform to the surface of theroad. Although many vehiclescome with technology to preventaccidents, they cannot do theirjobs if tires are not maintainingtheir grip on the road.
All-season tires are not a re-placement for snow tires. All-sea-son tires are designed to work inall sorts of conditions, from rainyweather to dry roads. Therefore, itis better to invest in a set of snowtires that will offer you better pro-tection. When putting snow tireson a car or truck, be sure to do soon all the wheels -- not just thedriving wheels. Otherwise youmay still risk spin outs or uneven
gripping of the road.It is not a good idea to keep
snow tires on all year. Becausethey are softer, snow tires tend tobe more noisy and can wear outfaster in warmer weather. There-fore, switch out the tires at the be-ginning of the snowy season andthen before the spring arrivesanew. FC12A516

(MS) -- As temperatures drop andthe annual hibernation routine be-gins, we start using heating appli-ances such as the furnace, fireplace, and space heaters for the first timein months. To avoid potential haz-ards, check every autumn that theseare in still in good condition and fol-low precautions for proper use.
CSA Group, a leader in publicsafety and testing and certification, offers the following safety tips forkeeping warm on cold days:
Furnace:* Have a qualified heating contrac-
tor perform a yearly maintenancecheck of your furnace and ventingsystem.
* Clean or replace your furnace fil-ter frequently during the heatingseason.
* Keep the immediate area free ofobstructions to ensure free air flow.
* Look for a certification marksuch as the CSA star mark on yourgas-fired furnace to ensure it hasbeen tested and certified to the ap-plicable standard.
* Never use gasoline or other flam-mable liquids near your gas fur-nace.
* Don't store combustible materi-als such as paper, chemicals, paint, rags and cleaning products close toyour gas furnace.
Gas fireplace:* Check that the glass panel is
intact. Do not use your gas fireplaceif the glass panel is removed, cracked or broken. Glass panels andframe assemblies should only be re-placed by a qualified service person.
* Check for the mark of an accred-ited certification organization, suchas the star mark from CSA Groupwhen purchasing a gas fireplace.
Space heaters:* Check for wear on the electrical
cord. If it's damaged, replace the en-tire unit or have the cord replacedby a qualified repair person.
* Keep it clean by dusting or vac-uuming it regularly. Always turn theunit off first.
* Keep the heater clear of furni-ture, rugs and drapes to allow freeair movement and avoid overheating.
* Look for certified third-party ver-ification marks like CSA Group'scertification mark. This shows thatthe heater complies with recognizedsafety standards.
* Turn the heater down or off be-fore going to sleep and keep it out ofpathways and well away from bed-ding and clothes. Turn it off whenleaving the house.
* Install a smoke alarm in theroom with the space heater.
* Have working smoke and carbonmonoxide alarms installed through-out the home.
