April Fool's Day is a day when people playpranks on unsuspecting friends, coworkersand family members. The history of April Fool's Day, or All Fools'Day, dates back to sixteenth centuryFrance and the reform of the calendar un-der Charles IX, when the Gregorian Calen-dar was introduced and New Year's Daywas moved from April 1 to January 1. Backthen, word did not spread nearly as quick-ly as it does now, and some people didn'tfind out about the date change until sever-al years after it was initiated. As a result, some were still celebrating the New Year onApril 1, and the rest of the populationridiculed those people who were not in theknow. And they were sent on pranks called"fool errands." These pranks were alsoknown as "poisson d'avril," which meansApril fish, because a young fish is easilycaught. Eventually the April pranks spreadoutside of France into other areas of Eu-rope, and different countries developedtheir own names and variations of pranks. In present day North America, April Fool'sDay is celebrated with jokes and pranks, some of which have actually fooled themasses. Over the years, certain prankshave stood out as monumental April Fool'sDay hoaxes. Here's a look at some of thosemore memorable pranks.* In 1976, British astronomer PatrickMoore announced on BBC radio that, at9:47 a.m., a once-in-a-lifetime event wasgoing to happen. He said that Pluto was go-ing to pass behind Jupiter and create a mo-mentary decrease in the Earth's gravity. Itwould result in a strange floating sensationon Earth. The BBC began to receive hun-dreds of phone calls from people havingsaid they felt the gravitational effects.* Discover magazine reported in 1995 thata new species of animal was found inAntarctica. It was called the hotheadednaked ice borer. These animals were pur-ported to have bony plates on their headsthat would become burning hot from nu-merous blood vessels underneath. The ani-

mal could bore through ice at high speeds. The magazine received more mail for thisstory than any story in the history of thepublication.* In 1998, Burger King printed a full-pageadvertisement introducing the "Left-Hand-ed Whopper," which was specially designedfor all of the lefties. The condiments wererotated 180 degrees for the benefit of left-handed customers. Thousands of cus-tomers headed into Burger King to get thespecial burger.* It was reported in 1998 that the Alabamastate legislature had voted to change themathematical value of pi from 3.14159 tothe "Biblical value" of 3.0. News spreadquickly over e-mail, and the Alabama legis-lature began receiving hundreds of callsfrom angry protestors.* In 1992, comedian Rich Little imperson-ated the voice of Richard Nixon to an-nounce Nixon's new candidacy for presi-dent. The announcement included audioclips of Nixon delivering a candidacyspeech. Listeners flooded National PublicRadio's telephone lines to express outrage.* In 1977, British newspaper The Guardianpublished a seven-page supplement on SanSerriffe, supposed to be a small republicconsisting of several semi-colon-shaped is-lands in the Indian Ocean. The two main is-lands were called Upper Caisse and LowerCaisse. Phones rang with eager people try-ing to find out more information about theidyllic spot. Only a few realized everythingabout the republic was named after print-er's terminology.* In 1996, the Taco Bell Corporation an-nounced they had purchased the LibertyBell and were renaming it the Taco LibertyBell. Protesters called the historic park inPhiladelphia where the bell was located.Taco Bell revealed the joke a few hours lat-er. White House press secretary Mike Mc-Curry added to the prank by announcingthe Lincoln Memorial had also been sold. Itwould be known as the Ford Lincoln Mer-cury Memorial.

* Only one TVstation broadcasted in Swe-den in 1962 and did so in black and white. The station's technical expert said that, thanks to new technology, viewers couldconvert their TV sets to color reception bypulling a nylon stocking over the TVscreen.Thousands of people fell for the prank.* A Sports Illustrated journalist made up astory about a new rookie pitcher who wouldbe playing for the Mets in 1985. The pitch-er's name was Sidd Finch, and he could re-portedly throw a baseball 168 mph withpinpoint accuracy. Surprisingly, SiddFinch had never even played the game be-fore. Instead, he had mastered the "art ofthe pitch" in a Tibetan monastery underthe guidance of the "great poet-saint LamaMilaraspa." Mets fans fell for the prank andthe magazine was flooded with requests formore information.

* In 1957, the BBC news show "Panorama"featured a story that a mild winter andelimination of the spaghetti weevil enableda bumper spaghetti crop by Swiss farmers.Footage of Swiss peasants pulling spaghet-ti off of trees was released, and hundredswere taken in by the prank. Many calledthe BBCasking how they could grow aspaghetti tree for themselves.

Dear God,

Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York,Washington D.C., Iowa and just recently New Jersey, according to my re-search, are the states that have passed laws to give same sex couples theright to marry. It seems as though there has been a great debate over thepast several years on this topic. My question is: What is the Biblical truthin regard to this issue?

Nancy

Dear Nancy,

It seems as though this issue is heavy on the hearts of many in thisworld today. I must continue my response when I answered the devotedGiants Fan a few weeks ago. My Word, the Bible, is the instruction bookfor all mankind. There is no respect of person. The Words I speak areTruth and many times offensive to those who choose evil over good.

To understand My purpose for mankind, one must have faith to believethat I AM who I AM; the Beginning and the End, the authority of all thatexists. It is not mother nature or father time neither is it world govern-ments or the law makers. It was I, who created all things; the heavens, the earth, mankind and all that exist today and I have set everything inmotion. Without faith in Who I AM it is impossible to understand the lovethat I have for every individual. And that love has been from everlastingto everlasting. It will never stop.

I am not pleased when mankind suppress the truth in unrighteousness. They did not see fit to acknowledge Me as God in times past nor in thispresent day. Therefore I have given them over to a depraved mind, to dothose things which are not proper. Why? Because I have given mankind afree will to choose. It is their choice to choose good or evil. The biblicaltruth in regard to same sex marriage is as follows:

Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I willmake him a helper suitable for him… So the LORD God caused a deep sleepto fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closedup the flesh at that place. The LORD God fashioned into a woman the ribwhich He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man... For thisreason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to hiswife; and they shall become one flesh.”

Marriage is the first institution that I have set up for mankind; that aman and a woman come together as one, each meeting the needs of theother, which is the natural thing. There is no other way. Those whochoose otherwise have an unbelieving heart; a heart and mind that sup-press the truth. They exchange the truth of God for a lie. Women exchang-ing the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same wayalso the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burnedin their desire towards one another, men with men committing indecentacts. They choose not to acknowledge Me as God and give hearty approvalto those who practice the same.

Other statements or beliefs about same sex marriage that you mighthear about is nothing other than a lie from the father of lies, the deceiv-er; satan himself.

Your Loving, Merciful, Forgiving and Creator of Justice,

GOD

Eggs are symbolic of Easter. They're colored, decorated, hidden, and used in decorative items for thehome. The one caveat to eggs is thatthey are quite fragile, and evenhard-boiled eggs can be rendereduseless with one accidental drop orblow. Instead of relying on break-able eggs for Easter fun, considermaking stronger ones instead.

Symbolic of rebirth and renewal, eggs are an integral part of settingthe scene come early spring. Select-ing a less fragile material to createthe looks of real eggs can increasethe potential for using them in

many different applications. One ofthe easiest ways to create harder-to-break eggs is to make them outof clay.

Modeling clay is a versatile medi-um that can be used to make every-thing from clay eggs to bunny fig-urines to religious items synony-mous with Easter.

A visit to the local craft store oreven a chain retailer will likely turnup different clay products, whichcome in a variety of colors. You cancreate pastel-colored clay by mixingprimary colors with white clay if youcannot find pastel colors in the

store. There are two main ways to create

egg shapes out of a ball of clay. Oneway is to roll a ball out of the clayand then roll it vertically betweenyour hands to make the smaller endof the egg. Another is to use a plas-tic egg as a mold and stuff the clayinside. Pop open the top of the plas-tic egg and then gently tap the clayout.

You don't even have to color yourclay if you don't feel up to it. Youmay also use white clay, allow todry, and then paint them usingacrylic paints. Mix two clay colorstogether before forming into an eggto achieve a marbled effect.

Also think about adding embell-ishments like stickers, ribbon, bows, and flowers to the eggs, muchin the same way you would decoratereal eggs.

To display clay eggs in a vase or toattach to a spring wreath, thread adowel or piece of florist's wire intothe egg before allowing to hardencompletely. Then attach them asneeded.

Clay eggs can be used in place ofregular eggs in just about every tra-ditional egg use -- except of coursefor making egg salad! Plus, makingclay eggs is a fun and safe craft forall ages.

Eggs in a NestHere's a creative way to show off

clay eggs.Materials:2 to 3 eggs depending on sizeMoss or raffiaRibbonFlorist wireWeave or shape the raffia or moss

into a nest shape large enough to fitthe clay eggs. Secure as necessarywith the wire. Decorate with bowsmade out of ribbon.

Place the eggs into the nest anddisplay where desired. TF124012

Cabbage has the right stuffNutrition experts recommend that you eat cab-

bage or other cruciferous vegetables — meaning“cross-bearing” from the shape of their flowers, whose four petals resemble a cross — as part of ahealthy diet. They suggest you eat at least 2 cups, 3to 4 times per week. Cruciferous vegetables includecauliflower, cress, bok choy, broccoli and similargreen leaf vegetables. I love cruciferous vegetables, but I’ve found cabbage to be the most versatile of thegroup.

Cabbage is a good source of vitamins C and A.When choosing cabbage heads, select those that arefirm and dense with shiny, crisp, colorful leaves.Examine the leaves to make sure that they’re free ofcracks, bruises and blemishes. Severe damage tothe outer leaves means there is probably worm dam-age or decay in the inner core as well.

We enjoy stuffing cabbage leaves with a variety ofinteresting ingredients. This recipe for Cabbage andPotato Cups makes a great weekday side dish, or aunique appetizer when topped with thin slices ofcrispy Prosciutto or Parma ham, or bacon crumbles.Remember, eat more cabbage (or other cruciferousvegetables) and improve your health!

Cabbage and potato cups1 medium onion, diced2 tablespoons olive or vegetable oil, plus more for

drizzling1 (3 pound) head leafy green cabbage; discolored,

damaged or tough outer leaves discarded1 teaspoon minced garlic

1 1/2 teaspoons salt1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper2/3 cup chicken broth or water 2 pounds large boiling potatoes1 cup buttermilk, shaken1 cup, coarsely grated, extra-sharp white

Cheddar or Pepper Jack cheese1 tablespoon drained, bottled horseradish8 tablespoons unsalted butter 3/4 cup Panko or fresh bread crumbs1. Cook onion in oil in a large, heavy skillet

over medium heat, stirring occasionally, untilsoft and golden, about 6 to 8 minutes.

2. Bring a 6- to 8-quart pot of salted water toa boil. Remove and discard the core of the cab-bage and carefully lower the cabbage leaves intothe boiling water using a slotted spoon.

3. Boil cabbage about 5 minutes, or until soft-ened. Transfer the largest leaves (at least 6) to abowl of ice water to stop cooking. Transferremaining cabbage to a colander to drain. Transferlarge leaves to paper towels to drain, then pat dry.

4. Using a nonstick muffin tin with 6 (1-cup) muf-fin cups, lightly spray each muffin cup or oil with 2tablespoons of butter. Cut parchment or wax paperinto 12 (10- by 2-inch) strips. Put 2 strips in a criss-cross pattern in each cup to help with removing cab-bage. (You will have a 2-inch overhang.) Line eachcup with a large cabbage leaf. Coarsely chop enoughremaining cabbage to measure 3 cups, then add toonion along with garlic, 1/2 teaspoon salt and pep-per, and water, and cook over moderate heat, stir-ring occasionally, until cabbage is tender andbrowned, about 10 minutes.

5. Put oven rack in middle position and preheatoven to 350°F.

6. Peel raw potatoes and cut into 1-inch cubes, then cover with cold salted water by 1 inch in a 2- to3-quart saucepan and bring to a boil. Cook potatoesuntil tender, about 15 minutes. Drain in a colander, then set potatoes in colander over saucepan tosteam-dry, uncovered, 5 minutes. Using a large bowland a slotted spoon or potato masher, mix the pota-toes with the buttermilk, cheese, horseradish, remaining 6 tablespoons butter and remaining 1teaspoon salt and pepper until combined well.

7. Fill each cabbage leaf with 2 to 3 tablespoons ofmashed potato mixture. Then, place a layer of the

sauteed cabbage mixture on the potatoes. Topwith remaining potato mixture, and sprinkleevenly with breadcrumbs. Drizzle crumbs witholive oil. Fold edges of cabbage in toward filling(do not completely cover). At this point, you cancover and refrigerate the Cabbage and PotatoCups for 24 hours. Bring to room temperature(about 30 to 45 minutes) before baking.

8. Bake until heated through and edges ofcabbage are well browned, 25 to 30 minutes.Transfer stuffed leaves to plates using wax orparchment overhangs. Makes 6 servings.

SHORTCUT TIP: If you have at least 2 cups ofleftover mashed potatoes, or leftover baked ormicro-cooked potatoes, mix them with the restof the stuffing ingredients to save time.

WE NOW DOOIL CHANGES

(MS) -- The return of warmweather marks the return ofroad trips for millions of mo-torists across the country.Whether going to the beach orheading off to parts unknown, hitting the open road with thewindows down is a time-honoredtradition for drivers of all ages.

But such road trips can provedisastrous if drivers don't take theright steps to prepare their vehi-cles for spring and summer trav-el. The following are a few waysmotorists can ensure their car isready to tackle the open road.

* Tighten things up. Looseparts, such as exhaust clamps, license plates, and interior trimpanels, can create rattles andcause parts to get damaged orfall off. What's more, rattlingsounds can be a noisy nuisancefor drivers and passengers alike.Permatex Threadlockers can beused to keep the nuts and boltsfrom coming loose and saveparts replacement costs. Theyalso have a threadlocker forplastic fasteners, which vehiclemanufacturers have grown to

rely on more and more.

* Wash your car. A newlywashed car not only looks good, but it's often much safer as well.Take your car to a car wash afew days before the trip and havethe vehicle thoroughly cleaned.A thorough cleaning will removedirt and grime from the vehicle'sundercarriage, not to mentionunsightly bird droppings andwater spots or salt stains leftoverfrom winter.

* Fix foggy headlight lenses. Many spring and summer roadtrippers travel at night so theirdays can be spent soaking upsome sun at the beach or lake. Before heading off for parts un-known, motorists should inspecttheir headlight lenses to reducerisk of accident. If the lenses areyellowed and foggy, that's likelybecause salt, ozone and road de-bris has dulled them to a pointwhere vision can be impaired, placing drivers and their passen-gers at risk. But foggy lensesdon't mandate an expensiveheadlight replacement. In fact,The Permatex Lens Renew Kit

makes it easy to clean up andpolish dull headlight lenses andrestore them to like new condi-tion, improving your car's light-ing and driver visibility.

* Check the battery. Over time, battery terminals and cables willstart to corrode. Such corrosionwill eventually eat away at thebattery's parts, creating a badconnection that sooner or laterwill require the battery be re-placed. Check the battery beforeyour trip and remember to cleanthe battery periodically as partof routine vehicle maintenance.

* Address windshield nicks andbullseyes. Nicks and chips in thewindshields are a common prob-lem regardless of the season. But such damage is most preva-lent in the winter because of theextra debris that's on the road. These nicks and cracks need toget fixed as soon as possible toprevent them from spreadingand resulting in the need for awindshield replacement. Often-times, motorists can addressnicks and bullseyes in their owndriveways in a matter of min-

utes. For example, the PermatexBullseye Windshield Repair kit istailor made for do-it-yourselfers,requiring no heating or mixingwhile ensuring each repair is vir-tually undetectable.

More information on easy re-pairs that you can do yourselfcan be found atwww.permatex.com. SC123944

Ready your car for spring and summer travel

Motorists should perform routine main-tenance before beginning a spring orsummer road trip, such as fixing wind-shield nicks (l.) and restoring cloudyheadlight lenses.

One of the best ways to improve ahome's resale value is to address thelandscape. Increasing a property'scurb appeal can be done in manyways, but a well-pruned lawn andgarden gives buyers the impressionthat the sellers truly took the time tomaintain the home and the surround-ing property.

Unfortunately, many homeownerschoose exotic plants when addressingtheir landscape. Though these plantscan be appealing and make a proper-ty stand out, if the plants are not na-tive to the region, they could be doingmore harm than good. Instead of up-grading your property with exoticplants from a far away land, considerthe following benefits of choosing na-tive plants before addressing yourlandscape.

* Native plants benefit local wildlife. The native plants and the nativewildlife spent years and years evolvingtogether, with each doing their part toensure the other's survival. But as de-velopment continued, local wildlifesuffered because of lost food sources. The local wildlife needs local, nativeplants to survive, so choosing theseplants instead of exotic plants canhelp ensure the survival of wildlifethat helps keep the ecosystem incheck.

* Native plants require less work. Some prospective home buyers mightfind a yard filled with exotic plants tobe visually stunning, but they mightalso see a good deal of work to main-tain those plants. Many exotic plantsrequire significant work on a home-owner's part to survive, while nativeplants have already adapted to the lo-cal climate and will require much lesscare. This is often attractive to cur-rent and future homeowners alike.

* Native plants might be a better in-vestment. A native plant has evolvedover the years to survive in its givenarea. Local insect populations andfungal infections might be able to de-stroy an exotic plant, but a nativeplant has grown resistant to suchproblems and likely has the ability tofight such infestations or infectionson its own. An exotic plant might re-quire costly pesticides and consider-able attention from homeowners tosurvive such problems.

Though homeowners might find ex-otic plants help their home stand outfrom their neighbors', it's importantthat homeowners recognize the envi-ronmental benefits of choosing localplants before making any decisions.GT124020
