SPOTLIGHT SKATER Breelie Taylor
What do you love most about skating? I love how I feel on the ice! It feels like freedom! There is so much to accomplish in skating. I will never be bored of skating. There are always things to learn.
What is your weekly training regimen?
I skate five days/week. I have my own off-ice regiment I do when I get home.
What are your favorite and least favorite elements?
My favorite element is my double flip because it’s easy and a lot of fun to do. My least favorite is my Axel. I just can’t get it stable!
What is the most memorable event of your skating career?
I had a clean program at regionals! The first clean program in competition (good timing, right?)
Who is your favorite skater?
Gracie Gold … because her jumps and spins are amazing!!!
Whom do you admire most?
I admire Jennifer Lawrence because of her outlook on life … just so happy and energetic!
Tell us about your school and extracurricular activities.
Favorite program? My favorite program is “Firebird” because it’s really fast and doesn’t stop (doesn’t give me time to think.) My favorite competitive accomplishment would have to be placing 5th out of 20 at the Eastern Great Lakes Regionals.
Tell us something about yourself that no one knows.
I still sleep with a giant stuffed puppy!
Best advice you have ever received?
Don’t think.
What are your future skating and educational goals?
I definitely want to get my double Axel. And start working on my triples.
I would like to have a career in ice shows. I might attend college after I finish ice shows. I will definitely continue to skate. It brings me so much joy!
Tell us about your family.
My sisters are Soucci, 16, Keelee, 13, Trewcci, 8, Avve, 4, and Vivvi, 1. I have a dog named Petey, a cat named Kit-Kat, and a bunny named Pepper.
I would like to meet ...
If I weren’t a skater, I would have been
A ballet dancer.
My three favorite things are
Favorite word: Yes
Least favorite word: No
Favorite quote: “Don’t burn bridges behind you.” ~ Fortune cookie
What turns me off: Arrogant and snobby people
Favorite book: The Hunger Games
Favorite movie: “Finding Nemo”
Favorite song: “My Love is Like a Star” by Demi Lovato
Favorite color: Blue
Sound I love: Laughter
Sound I dislike: Cardboard on cardboard. It drives me absolutely insane!
I would never want to be: A dentist. It grosses me out.
Three words that best describe me: Energetic, happy-go-lucky, and stubborn
If I were stranded on a deserted island, I would have to have: My new knife, unlimited Nutella, and a lighter!!!
B R E E L I E
Books, my knife, and my purse!
6
I’m homeschooled in the 9th grade. My favorite subjects are oceanography and French. With the drive to and from skating, there is not much time left for extracurricular activities. My hobbies are hanging out with my bff, archery, camping, and pottery.
Jennifer Lawrence because she is so funny and down to earth!
If you could have one question answered, what would you ask?
How many countries will I travel to?

Editor's Note: Since we are fortunate to claim so many talented U.S. Figure Skating officials, this column is designed to help you get to know them and how they began judging.
dana GRAHAM
Tell us about your skating career – number of years skating/discipline, where you trained, coaches, competitive accomplishments. Skating started out as family recreation for me. As the youngest in a big skating family, I remember tagging along at the rink; there’s a picture of me walking on ice on double-runners at the age of 18 months. Recreation turned into testing and then to competition. My sister and I ended up training in Denver, CO under Carlo and Christa Fassi. Paul Wylie and I started skating pairs together in Denver, but whenever we could get away from school, we would travel to California to train with John Nicks in the old Santa Monica Ice Capades Chalet.
Of my competitive accomplishments, I’m most proud of competing at the U.S. Championships at all levels at that time in both singles and pairs; winning the U.S. Junior Pairs title with Paul (1980 here in Atlanta!); and representing Team USA at several senior international competitions. When did you begin judging? Appointments? After coaching part time through college and for a few years thereafter, I decided to pursue a career in education. Judging offered a different way to stay involved that’s proved to be enjoyable, challenging and rewarding. When the IJS system was introduced, I was trained early on the roles of the technical panel. Today I hold Gold
test and National Singles and Pairs competition appointments, as well as National Technical Controller and Specialist appointments in both singles and pairs. Officiating at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships has certainly provided highlights for me. The atmosphere is electric, the pressure on athletes mighty, and it’s incredible to be there when competitors rise to the awesome occasion to capture medals. Describe your involvement with US Figure Skating and the Atlanta FSC. For over ten years, I have served as a U.S. Figure Skating Team Leader, travelling to all sorts of interesting places with TEAM USA: Stockholm, Halifax, South Korea and Belarus to name a few. I’ve served in this capacity for national champions and Olympians, but being the Team Leader when the Atlanta FSC’s very own Timothy Dolensky competed at the 2012 World Junior Figure Skating Championships was very special for me. What a terrific role model and representative he is, both on and off the ice! I also currently serve as the Chair of the Technical Panel Committee for U.S. Figure Skating. That keeps me pretty busy. In the past I’ve served on the Board of the Atlanta FSC and was the Co-chair of the 2004 U.S. Figure Skating Championships when they were held in Atlanta. Wow - it’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since that event! Tell us about your family, hobbies, profession. Most of my family still lives in Denver, so I get to that area to visit and to judge frequently. I work at the Lovett School, where I teach computer science, help with faculty professional development and work on strategic planning for technology. In my spare time, I love to play and watch tennis, go on hikes with my dog, and explore as much of the Atlanta culture as I can.

2015 South Atlantic Regional Championships Dates Change for Qualifying At the request of U.S. Figure Skating, three regions, including the South Atlantic, have agreed to change the dates of the qualifying competition due to a religious holiday conflict. The revised dates are Sunday, October 5 - Wednesday, October 8 with practice beginning on Saturday, October 4.
U.S. Figure Skating Graduating Seniors Award Program Application Now Available The U.S. Figure Skating Graduating Seniors Award Program honors and credits those qualified graduates for their achievements during their high school years through the presentation of a certificate to the skater during a school function or recognition opportunity. To further applaud the achievements of the individuals awarded, U.S. Figure Skating will publish the names of the recipients on both the U.S. Figure Skating Graduating Seniors Program
webpage as well as in Skating magazine. The program consists of four level designations with certificates awarded to individuals based upon their highest skating achievement (test or competition) during high school as noted on their application. In late spring following the application deadline and review process by U.S. Figure Skating, a congratulatory letter, award certificate, and lapel pin will be mailed directly to the applicant. To be considered for this award, applicants must complete an online application on or before March 1, 2014. The application is available at http://fs12.formsite.com/USFSAIT/2014GraduatingSeniors/index.html.

U.S. Figure Skating Social Media, Mobile and Electronic Communications Guidelines U.S .Figure Skating encourages and supports members, member clubs, programs, and teams to take part in social media by posting, blogging and tweeting positive experiences in skating as a show of support of its members and for promotion of the club, its programs, and events. However, the use of electronic communications increases the possibility for improprieties and misunderstandings and also provides potential offenders with unsupervised and potentially inappropriate access to participants. The improper use of mobile and electronic communications can result in misconduct.
All electronic communication of any kind between adults and minors, including use of social media, should be non-personal in nature and be for the purpose of communicating information about skating-related activities. No contact information for any minor should be placed on any social media site.
Coaches, skaters and club volunteers must follow common sense guidelines regarding the volume and time of day of any allowable electronic communication. All content between adults and minors should be readily available to share with the public or families of the minor member. If the member is under the age of 18, any email, text, social media, or similar communication should also copy or include a parent.
Social Media
U.S. Figure Skating recognizes, however, that social media, mobile and other electronic communications can be concerning where minor participants are involved. Coaches, especially, are cautioned from having their skaters joined to their personal Facebook page or any other similar social media application. As a best practice to facilitate communication, an official club, program or team page may be set up and members and parents may join (i.e., “friend”) the official organization or team page.
Email, Text Messaging and Similar Electronic Communication
Coaches, volunteers and skaters may use email and text messaging to communicate among each other about non-personal matters. All email and text message content between adults and minors must be non-personal in nature and be for the purpose of communicating information about club/skating-related activities. Emails and text messages from an adult to any minor participant should copy or include a parent.
Request To Discontinue All Electronic Communication or Imagery with Minors
Following receipt of a written request by the parents of a minor that their child not be contacted by any form of electronic communication by adults, we will comply with such request immediately. We will also refrain from posting a skater’s name and likeness (photos, videos, images) upon request. Email Jane Jud at [email protected].
Abuse and Misconduct
Social media and other means of electronic communication can be used to commit abuse and misconduct (e.g., emotional, sexual, ‘sexting’, bullying, harassment, and hazing). Such communications by a coach, official, director, employee, parent, skater or volunteer of a U.S. FigureSkating club or program will not be tolerated and are considered violations of U.S. Figure Skating’s SafeSport Program.
