DATE: October 14, 2016 TO: All County Agricultural Commissioners FROM: Plant Health and Pest Prevention Services SUBJECT: AQW Pest Report No. 38-2016 Weekly AQW Report: For the week of September 15-21, 2016 Attached is the report for all A, Q and W pests intercepted or detected in California from September 15-21, 2016. Pests are identified by the California Department of Food and Agricultures Plant Pest Diagnostics (PPD) Laboratory. Los Angeles County Dog Team Interception PDR: 190P06060233

On September 13, 2016, Inspector/Handler Diana Eckert, with dog Agent, and Inspectors Lauren Eckert, Laura Kopase, and Jabbar Bond were working at a FedEx Facility in Los Angeles. Agent alerted on an unmarked box of ornamental foliage from Alabama. Upon inspection, inspectors Kopase and Bond found an ant inside the shipping box. The pest sample was submitted to the PPD Laboratory and identified as Q-rated Pseudomyrmex ejectus (ant). A notice of rejection was issued for violation of California

Food and Agricultural Code (FAC) Section 6461.5 (live

pests) and California FAC Section 6421 (lack of

markings). The shipment of cut foliage was destroyed by

    freezing.

On September 18, 2016, a commercial shipment of frozen chicken from Mississippi entered the Blythe Border Protection Station. During a random spot check of the shipment, Inspector Carolina Young Rodriguez intercepted several live pests towards the back of the trailer. As a result, the shipment was issued a notice of rejection for being in violation of California FAC Section 6461.5 (live pests). The pests, via digital imaging, were emailed to the PPD Laboratory and were preliminarily identified as Q-rated pests. The driver was given his options and elected to have the shipment treated in Arizona.

Treatment Procedure: The shipment returned back out of state to Arizona and before being treated by professional pest control, the entire frozen chicken product was off-loaded by forklift into an empty refrigerated trailer at the fumigation site. After treating the infested trailer with methyl bromide (MB), the trailer was then aired out for over two and a half hours (so the MB could dissipate) before being reloaded with the frozen chicken product. After being treated, the shipment re-entered California at the Blythe Border Protection Station and was reinspected with negative pest findings and released to the California destination. Specimens were submitted (mailed) to the PPD Laboratory and identified as Q-rated Paromius longulus (bug) and Q-rated Amnestus sp. (burrowing bug).
