SMH Article December 2016QUOTE FROM VICE CHANCELLOR OF MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY PROF BRUCE DOWNTON
• Headline “ATAR alone will not find future leaders”
• The Vice Chancellor raised fundamental concerns about the current nature of the ATAR
system and pointed to international best practice for which an ATAR-like ranking system
was “anathema”
• The Vice Chancellor wrote: “This is the approach I have championed in my own
university and, for some years, we have regarded ATAR as just one of a range of
methods for assessing a student’s application”
• He continued: “We know this approach is working: our data shows that students
admitted on a broad range of criteria perform better overall than those admitted on ATAR
alone … We must look further than the ATAR.”

Admissions Transparency
Summary of Benefits of Admissions Transparency:
• Intended main beneficiaries are prospective higher education
students, their families, school and other influencers.
• Key aim is to drive consistency in the way higher education
providers present information about their admissions criteria and
processes, guided by agreed principles.
• Six agreed objectives:1) Consistent presentation of admissions information
2) Adoption of common admissions terminology
3) Revised ATAR-related thresholds and definitions
4) Tertiary admission centres (TACs) to adopt more consistent
approaches and reporting and streamline interstate application
processes
5) TEQSA monitoring and guidance on improved admissions
transparency
6) A new national admissions information platform

Admissions Transparency feedback
• Some universities have hidden their enrolment profile data on their
websites
• Despite the need for common definitions being used, there seems to be
many of us that had different interpretations of what was required e.g.
recent school leaver and Life & Work Experience.
• Definition of international students needs further clarification, as some
seem to be looking at only international students via Admissions Centres
rather than overall commencing profile for undergraduate students
• Some universities didn’t seem to take into account course transfers in the
profile for previous Past Higher Education
• Hopefully these will be clarified by DET and TEQSA over the next few
months for our next Admissions Transparency submission.
AAIR –Forum 2017 Alice Springs
Preliminary Student Success Rates in 2017
• They are more than 60 courses that have 5 or more students from
non ATAR pathways.
• 67% of the students from non ATAR pathways had a higher average
success rate than the ATAR pathway.
• 11% of the students from non ATAR pathway equalled the ATAR pathway
for the highest average success rate.
• Macquarie’s average course success rates for students from the 4 main
non ATAR pathways exceeds the national average success rate (83% on
2015 data) where 5 or more students are enrolled.
AAIR –Forum 2017 Alice Springs
Is ATAR the Silver Bullet?
• Generally the media has focused too much on ATAR, where it may not
necessarily be the deciding factor on student’s success at university
• Macquarie University has a strong emphasis on pathway schemes
• Success is measured not only by pass rate, but also retention rate and
student experience
• The Admissions Transparency has highlighted the necessity for further
clarification on the common definitions
• Looking forward to the 2017 aggregated data sets on success rates and
retention rates, where we can align with some of the educational profiles
from the Admissions Transparency submission
• Further analysis still to be completed once we are able to get more data
