Founded in 2003, the University of Luxembourg is the first and only university of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Doctoral schools at the Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities, Arts and Education Doctoral Training at the University of Luxembourg The international and interdisciplinary doctoral degree programmes provide custom-made training opportunities with a special focus on PhD candidates’ individual research field. Admission to the doctoral schools is based on a selection process. The University of Luxem- bourg also offers the opportunity of joint supervision of disserta- tions with other institutions of higher education abroad. Over 500 PhD students are enrolled at the University of Luxembourg. The doctoral education at the University of Luxembourg includes three levels : Disciplinary scientific training Inter/cross-disciplinary training Transferable skills and general academic core competences Doctoral training takes place in small groups and focuses on students’ specific research topics. PhD candidates gain in-depth knowledge through exchange with colleagues from the same field and are able to enlarge their pure disciplinary approach by participating in interdisciplinary research programmes. Students are focusing on their individual research while being accompa- nied by specialised training courses. There are different funding opportunities for PhD candidates at the University of Luxembourg: Funding at the University of Luxembourg The PhD candidate signs a fixed-term contract of employment with the University of Luxembourg. PhD offers are regularly published on the university’s employment portal by dissertation supervisors. Research training grant (“Aide à la Formation Recherche” AFR) The PhD candidate applies for “Research training” grant from the National Research Fund. www.afr.lu “Third-party” funding The research is funded by a third organisation (companies, public research centres, etc.) Self-Funding The PhD candidate finances his dissertation with his own funds.

Doctoral Training at the University of Luxembourg The international and interdisciplinary doctoral degree programmes provide custom-made training opportunities with a special focus on PhD candidates’ individual research field. Admission to the doctoral schools is based on a selection process. Doctoral School in Social Sciences: Social Change and Sustainable Socio-economic DevelopmentThe Doctoral School in Social Sciences prepares candidates for a PhD degree in social sciences (sociology and demography), educational sciences, psychology, economics and geography.

Four interdisciplinary research programmes are offered : • Health and Behaviour (Coordinator : Prof. Dr. Claus Vögele)• Social Inequality, Wealth and Income (Coordinator : Prof. Dr. Louis Chauvel) • Generations and Family (Coordinator : Prof. Dr. Helmut Willems)• Transitions in the Life course (Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Ute Karl)

Interdisciplinary research focuses on specific phenomena associated with social change such as demographics, social cohesion, socio-economic conditions and social welfare, regional development and social reporting, health and health provision. PhD candidates will be well equipped for an academic career in research as well as other professional careers in the field of social sciences, economics, social policy as well as social management and development.

English is the main, but not the only course language. French and German will be used in the disciplinary modules in accord-ance with the major language(s) of the specific disciplines.

IPSE Doctoral School : Identités. Politiques, Sociétés, EspacesThe IPSE Doctoral School offers an extensive postgraduate pro-gramme leading to PhD degrees in geography, history, literature, philosophy, political science and science of languages.

The programme focuses its interdisciplinary training within three research programmes: • The Sustainable Development programme gives cutting edge academic insights into alternative approaches to social organisation, technology and infrastructure development and necessary changes in production and consumption. (Coordinator : Dr. Ariane König).• The Intercultural Studies and Identities programme focuses on providing doctoral candidates with the necessary skills to examine lived multiculturality, its political and economic implications as well as concrete impacts on language(s), literature(s) and other forms of representation. (Coordinator : Prof. Dr. Nathalie Roelens).• The European and International Governance programme focuses on Economic and Social History of European Integration, Legislative Studies and Constitutionalism, European and International Public Policy and Political Philosophy and Ethics. (Coordinator : Dr. Philippe Poirier).

PhD candidates are trained in the necessary conceptual, methodological, and transferable skills for a successful career in both the academic and applied labour markets.

The disciplinary courses are taught in the language(s) used by the respective institute. The transferable skills courses are offered in English and the interdisciplinary courses are generally bilingual (English, French or German).

Doctoral School in Educational SciencesThe postgraduate programme is leading to a PhD degree in education, history, sociology, psychology, and linguistics.

To cover this disciplinary breadth, three different research programmes are offered : • History, Theory and Sociology of Education (Coordinator : Prof. Dr. Justin J.W. Powell)• Learning, Cognition and Development (Coordinator : Prof. Dr. Sabine Krolak-Schwerdt)• Multilingualism in Education and Society (Coordinator : Prof. Dr. Jean-Jacques Weber)

Combining historical, educational and cultural analysis with sociology, psychology, and sociolinguistics, the doctoral school covers all relevant disciplines involved in contemporary research on education. With the special focus on the social, cultural and linguistic challenges societies are facing today, our doctoral candidates develop the knowledge, principles, and skills needed to analyze educational programmes, policies, and practices.

Preferred language competences are English, German, and / or French. English is the main, but not the only course language.
