SPOT THE EASTER BUNNY AND WIN AFTERNOON TEA FOR TWOat The Hermitage FM Coffee Lounge

Last month’s quiz answer... and winner!Many of you were able to identify the landmark as High Cademan, part of the tors and boulders scattered around Cademan Wood, in Whitwick. The rocks formed the top of a volcano before it erupted. This month’s prize has been won by Dave Bills of Whitwick.

Let’s see how well you do with our next landmark!

Whittie proved quite difficult to find last month! He was spotted by just a few eagle-eyed readers, hiding behind the advert for ‘Kate Heath Hairdressing’ on page 35. The first correct answer drawn out of the ‘Community Voice Hat’ was sent in by Alex Harvey of Thringstone, who will receive a £10 gift voucher.

Whittie is having a break this month, but the Easter Bunny hiding behind one of the adverts! If you spot him, email your details and which advert he is hiding behind, to the contact details below.

The prize for the first correct answer drawn from ‘The Community Voice Hat’ is a delicious ‘Afternoon Tea for Two’ at The Hermitage FM Coffee Lounge, in Memorial Square, Coalville.

During these difficult times, we at the Community Voice, acknowledge how important it will be to keep those that are unwell or feeling socially isolated from the local community.

We will endeavour to keep you updated with what is happening in the area and continue our support of the local businesses.

At the time of going to press we have managed to obtain details of a few businesses and organisations that are providing extra services and points of information. For example, the Old School Tearooms in Ibstock are providing free local home delivery of their meals and The Palace Community Centre in Ibstock will be acting as an information hub where, for example, residents without easy access of the internet can ring for information or people who are willing to volunteer their time to those in isolation are able to leave their details. There are further details throughout the magazine regarding this.

If any individual, business, group or charity are providing similar support, we would be happy to put a note in our May issue. Contact us on 01530 267344 or [email protected] to register.

We hope that these measures only need be temporary, but, in the meantime, we hope you all stay healthy and happy.

All information supplied in the magazine was correct at the time of going to press.

CORONAVIRUS ADVICE FROM THE NHS...

Sent by Drs Virmani and Bedi’s Practice Patient Participation Group

WHITWICK HEALTH CENTREwww.whitwickhealthcentre.co.uk

The current strain of coronavirus is highly infectious and can be very serious for some people, so it is important to follow Public Health England (PHE) & NHS guidance.

At the time of writing it is hard to know how the situation will develop before this article is published. However, some things are constant, and so they are listed here.

To protect yourself from infection:

• Avoid close contact with other people. The advice is to keep a distance of 2 metres, which is about 3 steps away;

• Self-isolate if you are over 70, have any serious health conditions or are advised to do so;

• Wash your hands well and often with soap and water, especially after being in a public place;

• Avoid touching your face, eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands;

• Clean and then disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces such as tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, sinks and toilets.

If you think you may be infected:

• Stay at home for 7 days if you have a high temperature or a new cough;

• Do NOT go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital as they can’t help, and by going you will spread the infection;

• Drink plenty of water and take everyday painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to help with your symptoms;

• If you sneeze or blow your nose, use a tissue, bin it and wash your hands well with soap and water;

• Sleep alone if possible.

Further up-to-date information is always available on PHE & NHS websites, so you will be able to keep following their advice and that of the government.

Established 2004

Work on Coalville’s new indoor market is now underwayPlanning permission for Newmarket, which will be created within a former pub on Marlborough Square in the town, was granted in December and is now well underway. The work will transform the building into a modern space with food stalls and an eating area, as well as traditional market stalls, pop-up traders and space for events.

Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: “We’re very excited to see work progressing to create Newmarket and bring Coalville’s market into the heart of the town. This is part of our regeneration work for Coalville – moving the market and creating a modern, vibrant space that will be exciting for shoppers and traders alike. We appreciate that there will be some disruption while the work is ongoing and we thank people for their patience during this time.”

Newmarket is expected to open in 2020, with applications now open for new traders to take stalls. North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC), which owns the current indoor market and is carrying out the transformation work, is looking to attract a range of food and non-food businesses on a range of lease options.

Anyone who would like to apply for a stall at Newmarket can contact [email protected] or call 01530 454598 for more information.

The current indoor market will stay open until the new one is ready to receive customers. Trading days are Tuesday 8am to 2pm, and Friday and Saturday 8am to 4pm.

Through the eyes of a Whitwick schoolboyby Geoffrey Walker

World War Two 1938 to 1945

This series of events of the second world war is drawn from my memory banks, whilst I am still ‘compos mentis’.

My grandparents were farmers on the banks of Blackbrook reservoir namely, The Hermitage Farm. I vividly remember them talking about an impending conflict with Germany. One day I watched a flight of Tiger Moth biplanes practicing low-level flights in formation over the reservoir. I have since learnt that they belonged to the ‘Elementary Flying School’, stationed at Desford. This was a fascinating sight for a small boy. To hear one aircraft we all rushed out, but as I recall, three or four at eye level was amazing. This became a regular feature over the coming years; however, this was building up to a tragedy waiting to happen. I will expand on that subject later in the series.

I left Oaks in Charnwood School when I was almost 8 years old. The total roll of children numbering about 15. We were all taught in the same classroom by Mrs Thompson. My arrival in the last class of Whitwick infants’ school (now a private dwelling) after the August holidays of 1938 was a shock to my system.

In 1939 we moved to a house in a row on Talbot street, next to the shop at the ‘Top-a-Dumps, My first wartime memory was a line of children walking up the street with brown name tags pinned to their lapel, and a box containing a gas mask slung over their shoulder. They were school children of all ages, evacuated from Birmingham.

Some had billets already agreed. Unfortunately, some were without a place to stay. That is how we came to have a boy of about my age to stay with us, in an overcrowded two-bed cottage, with a shared outside WC. A bed was made up for him on the floor against mine, however he soon became unwell, he then had my bed and I had a turn on the floor. As far as I remember he stayed less than a week before his parents came to take him back home. The largest contingent of evacuees came from English Martyrs School and all attended Whitwick Holy Cross.

Woodstock in Whitwick are delighted to announce that our community defibrillator now has a new home at The Lady Jane, Hall Lane Whitwick.

A spokesman said, ‘We are grateful to the Co-op for previously having the defibrillator there and for replacing it with a new one, meaning our village has two now.’

The landlord, John Ball and members of the Woodstock committee met up with community first responder, Anthony Parks, to thank him for his help in getting the defibrillator up and running and Ben Hellier, the electrician, who generously installed it for us.

Anthony is also holding a free training session on Thursday, March 12th at Park Hall on North Street. To book a place, contact the Parish Council on 01530 459527 or call at parish office during opening hours.

Woodstockers, be proud of what you do!

Thringstone Primary School has recently completed a garden project, thanks to support from parents and the village community.Whilst carrying out forest schools work, an idea came about for a fruit and vegetable garden, where children throughout the school can benefit from hands-on learning.

An area in the school grounds was chosen as the perfect spot to create the garden and a goal was set to transform the area in just one week.

Parents and the local community generously contributed equipment, materials, plants, pots etc for the garden, as well as their time, with many parents and volunteers getting their hands dirty alongside the children. From an unused bed of soil, a garden was created with raised beds, benches, pallet planters and decorative stones. Pupils will be able to tend to the garden and watch it grow through the seasons, learning about plants, fruits and vegetables in a practical way.

From the initial dream to create a garden in a week, support from staff showed the pupils that it was possible, and the project was achieved by everyone working together.

The project could not have been completed without the generous donations from local businesses and organisations. A big thank you from the school to Travis Perkins, Safe Retail, Baugh Transport and Thringstone Primary School PTA.

From 6 April 2020 several important changes to Capital Gain Tax are coming in which will apply to you if you own more than one home.Many people are completely unaware of their responsibilities to tax when they have a second property, often thinking because they a pay a mortgage on it, it makes no money and therefore nothing needs to be declared.These changes further complicate the whole rental property market scenario and Sence Accounting can help.If you or anyone you know has a property portfolio or just one rental property, these changes are likely to affect them. This is one of many legislation changes coming in to play from April 2020.Now is the time to seek expert advice from an accountant.Sence Accounting are here to help.

NO LONGER OPEN: All parish council buildings

are now CLOSED to the public.

PUBLIC STATEMENT FROM YOUR PARISH COUNCIL CHAIRMAN, COUNCILLOR LISA COLLINS

On 19 March the parish council put emergency measures in place so that we can continue to function, although this is in a more limited way than before. All parish council buildings are now closed to public access until further notice. In these challenging times, the role that all parish councillors and our staff will play within Whitwick and in serving our community has never been more important to us. Our focus stays on how we can work with other agencies and share information and ideas. The Council is working with Woodstock In Whitwick to share resources and help our health workers and emergency services, our vulnerable or elderly residents, to encourage good neighbour support and for us all to help each other. By the time you read this we hope to have details on our website and noticeboard: If you or your business wish to volunteer please get in touch. As the world continues to battle Coronavirus we would urge you to help each other where possible, act responsibly and at all times follow professional advice on how to keep yourselves safe. It is hugely important to avoid putting other people at risk. By working together with our residents, Whitwick Parish Council are confident that we all, as a community, will show common sense and kindness to our neighbours while we are under the impact of coronavirus. Please keep safe.

News from your Parish Council – APRIL 2020 At the beginning of March a small group of ladies came to a free self-defence lesson, hosted by Craig from Stealth Fitness Centre

with the Parish Council. This gave us free advice on basic techniques and was really useful to us all. We also saw the free Crime Prevention gadgets that you can get from the Community Office. Sadly two ladies used their new skills within 24 hours – what a real benefit that proved to be. Sincere thanks to Craig and Cllr Collins for organising this - we hope to do it again later in the year.

Whitwick Park

In April the closing

time moved to 7.30 pm and remains open at the time of writing this (but we are watching National guidelines.)

You can still phone/email the Parish Manager on important parish matters – but we do ask for your patience please while priorities keep changing.

We didn’t have to wait ‘in vain’ for funny captions to last month’s photo!Well, what can we say! Last month’s ‘nutty’ little caption competition certainly brought out the best and the ‘worst’ of our reader’s sense of humour! Given the elements in the photograph (a weathervane with a large cockerel on the top, a feeder for dispensing nuts to birds and a furry little squirrel, with a quizzical expression on it’s face!) it wasn’t really surprising!

This innocent little photo, kindly supplied by one of our readers, certainly made us smile here in the office and we thought up some captions ourselves; some of which would not have been suitable for printing! Having decided to open it up to our readers, it seems that many of you also share our typical British ‘saucy postcard’ sense of humour too!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to send in their suggestions. They certainly gave us a giggle.

Here are a few that we COULD print.....

“Can you point me in the right direction to get the Brazil Nuts, please?”

“I must be nuts waiting around ‘in vain’, because a cock doesn’t lay eggs!”

“Someone told me there were chestnuts roasting ...something about an open fire? I may be a few months late, but I was wondering if you had any left...?’’

As laughter is good medicine, we will have to try this again sometime. Any photos, anyone?

Swannington Open Gardens‘Pop up Plant Sale’ 2020May 17th Sunday 10.30am – 1pm at this stage a provisional date to put in your calendar due to the current issue Britain is experiencing. Nonetheless, we wish to share with you and hope you will be able to support us in our next quest to raise some funds for Hospice Hope, a local charity helping people who have long term health conditions.

Swannington Open Gardens took the decision four years ago to hold an annual plant sale, whilst the Open Gardens event remains biannual. Our small team of dedicated growers have begun the task of nurturing their plants, setting seeds and hope to provide another year of quality plants for you to enjoy in your own back yard. Hopefully with the pop-up plant sale being held in the month of May, we aim to use this also to celebrate VE Day by doing a theme of Dig for Victory and an allotment design competition done by children (more details on our Facebook page coming soon). Fingers crossed; we may have a small assortment of vegetable plants for sale too. Now for anyone who knows the fun gardening and growing can be, to complete this recipe there needs to be cake (in our opinion). At our pop up plant sale we aim to have refreshments for sale, cake to enjoy with a tea or coffee or you may wish to take it away with you, sitting in your own green space, watching the bees and insects coming to inspect their future lunch of nectar. You know there is more to gardening than one realises, chance to sit and watch visiting wildlife, drink in the atmosphere, place tor relax and listen to the sounds of nature.

To keep up to date with our efforts, check we are still able to go ahead on May 17th, please visit our Facebook page. We would just add that if we cannot go ahead we will attempt to do something later in the year, community means everything to us, so important to catch up over the garden wall.

Here’s another installment in the exciting new series of stories by local author and illustrator, Rachel Greaves. Keeping in the Ruffle theme, the new tales follow a toy Ruffle and the adventures he has each month. Read on to find out more…

As before, each month there will be a word within the text. Just find the underlined, italic letters in capitals then re-arrange them to create this month’s word.

For more information about Ruffle’s storybooks visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk

Now available on YouTube – Ruffle’s walks: a series of short video stories

®

Try the Ruffle “Find the word” competition - this month’s word has 9 letters. The answer is on the inside back cover.

For further information about Ruffle’s story books and other adventures visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk or watch the new series of short films on YouTube under ‘Ruffle’s Walks’.

After an exciting day at the playgroup the toy Ruffle had been taken home by a different child. He was now lying under the bed of her older sister who had decided that she would like to play with Ruffle! The older sister knelt down and reached Under the bed, her fingers gripping onto Ruffle’s fur as they touched him. She decided to take Ruffle into the garden along with a large white handkerchief and some string.

She took Ruffle over to the wooden bench in the garden and started to tie a piece of string to each corner of the Handkerchief. Once she had checked that the string was firmly attached, she then tied the other end of each piece to one of Ruffle’s legs. She concentrated hard to ensure the string was tight around the brown fur.

‘There you go little dog,’ she told Ruffle as she picked him up to examine her work. ‘You’re going to be able to fly into the sky then float down with your Parachute!’

She folded the white handkerchief carefully against Ruffle then stood in the middle of the garden. After counting to three she threw Ruffle and the attached handkerchief as high as she could into the sky. Ruffle’s legs went Round and round as his body twisted in the air. He seemed to hang for a brief moment before starting his drop back down to earth. The girl watched with delight as the wind caught the handkerchief which billowed out to slow Ruffle’s descent, guiding him to a gentle landing on the grass.

The girl laughed As she skipped over to where Ruffle and the parachute lay. Once again she folded the parachute handkerchief carefully against Ruffle before throwing him as high as she could into the sky. The parachute was securely fastened and brought Ruffle safely down again. The girl was very pleased with her invention and eager to try to throw Ruffle even higher. But her stronger throw was Caught by a gust of wind which took the parachute and Ruffle over the garden fence into a wooded area behind the garden. The parachute brought Ruffle to

rest in the overgrown grass the other side of the fence.

Annoyed that Ruffle had flown out of reach, the girl dragged a garden chair over to the fence. Standing on Tiptoe upon the chair and holding onto the top of the fence to look over, she spotted the white handkerchief partially covering Ruffle.

Hmm - she would have to wait until the following day for her older brother to help her rescue Ruffle and the parachute. She climbed down from the chair and returned inside having no choice but to leave him there for the time being.

But Ruffle hadn’t been lying there for long before a large bird spotted him and swooped down, attracted by Ruffle’s shiny bead Eye. The bird grabbed hold of Ruffle in his claws and tried to carry him. But Ruffle was still attached to the parachute which kept opening as the wind caught it so the bird was only Able to fly a short distance before letting go of Ruffle.

As though well trained, the handkerchief opened one more time and Ruffle floated down, this time landing next to a large lake.

What would happen next?

MACMILLAN QUIZ NIGHTFor the first time last week, The Rotary Club of Coalville held a Quiz Night with the proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer Support at Hugglescote Community Centre.17 Teams of 4 entered and there was a substantial raffle and a superb buffet provided by some Rotarians and their Partners.

Overall there was a great atmosphere with plenty of fun and banter. The event raised a great £431.06 for the cause whilst all the quizzers had a great time.

By popular demand this event is to be repeated next year on 26 February 2021. Please watch this Publication for further details.

The stable courtyard behind Staunton Hall was in a sorry state when my father, Alec Blunt, bought it in 1955, the roof missing in places and the courtyard knee-high in grass. Above the granary on the eastern side was a large clock face, and inside a high platform, but the clock was missing. We were told that Italian prisoners, who lived in the stables during the war, had tried to repair the clock and finished up vandalising it.

After a few years the clock face fell down in a heap of oak boards and copper sheet. We kept it in store for some time but eventually sent the copper for scrap; these were years of real austerity and we had found no way to use the stables. It was in 1974 that we finally started to convert the rooms into craft workshops, and the high platform came down when the granary became a gallery. For the next forty years the clock was forgotten.

It was the chance reading of an old account which brought the subject to mind again. The clock, by the famous maker John Whitehurst of Derby, had been installed in 1779, the year after his friend, the fifth Earl Ferrers, had died. The vandalised remains had been included in the 1949 furniture sale at the hall, and bought by the curator of Leicester Museum, who was a clock enthusiast. Wife Jacqueline and I went to see them, a sad relic stored on a shelf in the loft above the museum. That was all that remained, but it gave us the idea of restoring a clock to the building.

We are lucky to have a wide range of skills on tap here at Staunton. The five-foot diameter dial was made in steel by our blacksmiths, and powdered coated in traditional blue down the road at Tick-nall. Multi-skilled Russell Lister made the giant template for the Roman numerals in his Ferrers Centre workshop, and Dave, our house manager, applied the gold leaf. Finally, our maintenance team hoisted the dial up and fixed it in the original place, with the hole through the wall for the shaft to the clock hands.

It remained to fit the hands and connect to an electric mechanism mounted on the gallery wall. This clever machine automatically adjusts for British Summer Time, and restarts twelve hours later if there is a power cut. It is made in Italy. Who knows, it could be made by the grandson of the pris-oner who wrecked the original more than seventy-five years ago.

THE FERRERS CLOCK

It is with much regret that the Chapel has had to cancel all services and meetings from mid-March until further notice, following Government announcements and the advice of national Church bodies on the coronavirus situation.

In these difficult and unprecedented times we can turn to God in prayer about many things, including:

• Those around the world who have lost family members and friends

• Those who are ill and their families and friends

• The many people who might feel isolated and lonely- let us be good neighbours and support each other

• People who are concerned about the loss of work, pay, businesses and pupils and students concerned about school closures and the cancelling of exams

• The protection of our wonderful NHS staff and other essential workers

• Guidance and wisdom for our own Government, national and local, and the leaders of other nations

• The early success of the world’s scientists in the search for a vaccine and other means of combating the virus

• Our families and friends

Heavenly Father, bless and protect our local communities in these very difficult days, especially those who feel lonely due to isolation. Help us to show love and care, to keep in touch with families and friends and help us to do what we can to help our neighbours. Amen.

Restoration Piece! MGA Roadster manufactured from 1955 -1962also in coupe form as well.

Early ones had a 1500cc engine with drum brakes, later increasedto 1600cc with front disk brakes. Also a twin cam version was made.

Two thirds where exported mainly to America. Mine is a 19561500cc imported back from America in 2012 and underwent a fullnut and bolt restoration by myself taking 3½ years includingconverting to right-hand drive. Well worth it on hot sunny days withthe top down.

If you look closely at the car you will see there are no external door handles or door locks. Gone are the days when you didn’t need to havecar security. P.S. Food for thought, when this car was made there were NO motorways in the UK.

Here at the Community Voice, we would be delighted to receive stories from any of our readers regarding their cherishedvehicles and bikes, to be included in our 'Classic Corner' feature.

A piece in this magazine a few months ago about former headmasters of Thringstone School prompted someone to ask me ‘What became of Leonard Sealey, who was headmaster in the 1950s, after he left our village?’ In order to oblige, I have spoken to various members of his family, both here and in the USA, to answer that very question.

Leonard Sealey was born on 7 May 1923 in central London to George W Sealey and Gertrude Holmes and became headmaster at Thringstone Primary in 1954.

Leonard served in the Navy in WW2 and had quite a distinguished service having been recruited to work on the famous Enigma Project. At the time he told nobody, not even his parents, where he was going or what he was working on, but eventually in his later years told his family how he would scan newspapers looking for articles that could camouflage German strategic plans.

On 11 March 1944 Leonard married Joan Mary Hearn in Loughborough. He had studied at Loughborough College, Peterborough Training College and Leicester University and initially went into employment as an aeronautical engineer, but disliked the work, so opted for a complete career change. He decided that ‘the place to put your time is in the minds of children,’ so he took a job as a teacher in an infant school for children ages 4 to 7 and became head of Thringstone Primary in 1954. Leonard Sealey did not believe in just teaching maths in maths class and painting in art. He always believed that all student subjects were interrelated. Writing was connected to mathematics which was connected to science which was connected to painting. All were equally valid. Learning was integrated and open-ended.

Leonard stayed at the Thringstone school for only 2 years, but was very well liked and remembered. It is understood he put on a few shows in the community centre’s hall, one of which was puppet shows, using very large puppets which he had made himself. The couple had 4 sons, Richard and Andrew, both of whom lived with their parents at Thringstone House, and Nicholas and Edward both born after the family left Thringstone, when they went to live on Forest Road in Coalville. Eventually the family moved to Sussex.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Leonard exported his then-revolutionary educational ideas from Great Britain to the USA. Not only did he visit educational reformers there, but he also invited them to visit him in England to witness his ideas applied in real-life classrooms. Originally, American educator Bill Hull turned to Leonard Sealey for advice on new methods of teaching mathematics. As the two spent more time together, however, Hull realised that what Mr. Sealey had to teach went beyond one subject. “I visited a number of schools with Len and then realised it was not just the mathematics that was way ahead of the schools I knew here,” said Hull, who later was one of the founders of the Fayerweather Street School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “It was the way that British children were using their own initiative.” Many American schools tried to copy the British open-school model that Leonard Sealey endorsed, but on some occasions, it failed to transfer

After he left Thringstone Primary he moved on to be advisory officer for junior schools for the whole of the county of Leicestershire, which covered around 200 schools. A strong advocate of the open school movement, Leonard went to the United States in the mid-1960s to help implement a similar model there. For a few years, he served as director of the Regional Laboratory at the Education Development Center in Newton, Massachusetts, but he grew discouraged with the politics of

education, feeling that if they could do all they were doing in Great Britain on such a small amount of money, imagine what you could do in America where so much money was spent. He became very disillusioned because he felt that the money was being misdirected.

In 1968, he returned to England, where he crafted a career for himself as an independent consultant. His wife Joan died in 1972 in Eastbourne, and the same year he remarried Nancy Marie Verre, who was 18 years his junior in Lewes, Sussex. Nancy, an American, had been to Boston College and shared a love of language.

In 1975 he went back to the United States, with his new wife and sons. Originally, they only intended to stay for nine months, to give one of the children an opportunity to attend an American high school. They wound up staying, and Leonard continued to consult and write, promulgating his educational theories. In 1977, he embarked on a study of how these concepts had fared in American schools, but he was not altogether pleased with the way these ideas were put into practice.

Always keen on writing, during his lifetime he wrote over 90 books. These included several children’s books, including an encyclopedia, plus reading books, a teaching aid on exploring language, a book on communication and learning in primary school, various books on mathematics and also a book on car racing and earthquakes and volcanos, which were a few of his many interests.

As he had in England, he found a home by the sea. Fond of sailing, he also spent his free time painting, working mostly in oils and pen and ink. His work was even exhibited in local galleries near his home in Massachusetts. Leonard also enjoyed puttering around the house and Sundays were devoted to home repair. Leonard Sealey died of Alzheimer’s disease on 5 August 2003 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and is buried in St Joseph’s cemetery there.

From September 2020, those joining the school’s Reception Year will enjoy first-class facilities in a brand new, modern and eco-friendly classroom block.

The purpose-built development will boast large classrooms, kitchen and wet areas and will open onto an outdoor learning space overlooking the farms and fields surrounding the school.

Head Teacher, Mrs Emma Billington, commented, “We are so lucky with the location of our school and this new development will really help our youngest pupils to get maximum benefit from our natural surroundings. Our teachers are raring to go and I’m very excited that pupils will experience the best teaching in the best environment, setting them up to enjoy and to achieve highly in the first year of their school careers. We are always looking to improve what we offer and, following on from upgrading our sports facilities and the new Sarah Ennis Music Room, it is wonderful to continue this programme with such an impressive project.”

The new building will be integrated into the school’s current site and the company, Green Modular, has been selected for its commitment to strong visual appeal, high quality finish and its use of sustainable and environmentally-responsible materials in its construction.

WORDSWORTH AND WHITWICKThis month is the 250th anniversary of the birth of the major poet William Wordsworth (1770–1850) a leader of the Romantic Movement. Wordsworth’s poetry celebrates the wonder and beauty of the natural world. In 1804 he wrote what is probably the most famous poem in the English language:

“I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o’er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.”

Wordsworth lived in the stunningly scenic Lake District, making his home in Grasmere in Dove Cottage and from 1813 at Rydal Mount in Ambleside. However, he and his family travelled widely on the continent and around Great Britain.

The team at Whitwick Historical Group were aware that Wordsworth was a frequent visitor to this locality due to his friendship with Sir George and Lady Margaret Beaumont of Coleorton Hall. For several months in 1806 and 1807, he, along with his wife Mary, his sister Dorothy, his sister-in-law Sarah and his two eldest children, John and Dora, stayed at Hall Farm adjoining Coleorton Hall. Whilst he was a guest of Sir George, he wrote several poems and designed gardens for the recently constructed Hall. He returned many times in subsequent years.

In 1818, Francis Merewether, the Rector of Coleorton, became Vicar of Whitwick. He went on to serve both parishes until 1864. He too was a friend of Sir George and Lady Beaumont and knew the Wordsworth family. In 1828, John Wordsworth, William and Mary’s eldest son, became Merewether’s curate in Whitwick and lived at the Old Vicarage in Silver Street. This building is now the Silver Oaks residential care home.

Investigating the details surrounding the period of John Wordsworth’s curacy has been absorbing for WHG volunteers. We know that John’s family visited him at his Whitwick home. His aunt, Dorothy Wordsworth, wrote in her journal that she spent many weeks in the

village but was not always in good health. The Wordsworth Trust holds several letters written by Dorothy, Mary, Dora and Lady Beaumont which include references to members of the family being in Whitwick. The last letter that Lady Margaret wrote before her death in July 1829 was to William Wordsworth; it mentions Dorothy leaving Whitwick. This month’s illustration is a copy of a delightful drawing by Dora with the caption “Whitwick Vicarage” dated 4th August 1828 and signed “Dora”. She was a talented amateur artist as the drawing shows.

Although John Wordsworth’s time in Whitwick was less than two years, it is remarkable to imagine him and his famous family walking or riding through the village. One wonders if they were recognised. No doubt there were journeys along the lanes between Whitwick and Coleorton too. William Wordsworth returned to Coleorton in 1830. By this time his friend Sir George had died and his son John had moved to Cumberland.

The research undertaken so far at the Old Station about the Wordsworth and Whitwick connection has whetted our appetites to uncover more. If readers are aware of any resources that would help us we would welcome the input.

Southfields 50th Anniversary Annual Open event200 people were in attendance from all over the country to take part in the Southfields 50th Anniversary Annual Open event in Leicester, SR Judo Club took ten competitors, coming away with six medals.

Millie Shaw, fighting in only her second ever competition, displayed great spirit in the primary girls U23kg category, but was unfortunate to not win a medal. Eliza Seditas, competing in the girls under 30kg battled hard to a bronze medal. Lyla Painter fought exceptionally well in the U35kg to also take a bronze, narrowly missing out on a silver with just seconds left on the clock.

Noah Chamberlain, taking part in his first competitive event put in an outstanding performance in the primary boys under 35kg and took a well-deserved silver medal. Ricco Crowie-McGrath also put in a fantastic display of judo, winning all his bouts and returning with a gold medal in the U23kg. Fabian Crowie-McGrath came up against some tough opposition in the U26kg and was unlucky to not get a medal.

In the junior boys, Curtis Thompson, fighting in the U30kg category took a silver medal. Ben Shaw moved up a weight category into the boys U40kg. Unfortunately, the weight advantage fared too much for him and he returned without a medal despite a valiant effort.

In the junior girls, Ruby Gimson was unfortunate in the U50kg, losing to the eventual gold medallist and going home with a bronze. Poppy Murphy, up against some very experienced players in the girls O65kg and did very well to come away with silver
