It seems that we managed to stump many of you last month with our local landmark competition!

The unusual piece of stone masonry, in the shape of a large key-hole, is to be found on The Staunton Harold Estate, set in the beautiful Leicestershire countryside. Staunton Harold Hall, is a large, 18th-century Grade I listed country house, built by the Earls Ferrers. It is situated within the 2,000-acre Staunton Harold Park, which includes the 17th century Grade I listed Holy Trinity Chapel.

This month’s prize has been won by Ivan Tebbutt from Ibstock and our picture shows the prize draw being performed by Kevin Cunningham from Bleathwood IFA Ltd, your first choice for professional financial advice (see his advert on page 9).

Let’s see how well you do with our next landmark!

Family Fun DayFamily Fun DayDining out and eating inAs a nation, we love to eat out. We are now eating out more than ever before, with the average person, according to a recent survey, eating out or ordering a takeaway meal, at least twice a week. The British Beer and Pub Association claim that British pubs alone now serve over a billion meals per year! From a quick working lunch to a sumptuous celebration meal, there is certainly no shortage of choice in the local area and restaurants are on hand to cater for all tastes and budgets. Many menus have now been extended to include the more specific dietary requirements of some customers.

For great food and wonderful atmosphere, The Belper Arms at Newtown Burgoland is a great choice of venue. The oldest pub in Leicestershire, complete with resident ghost, offers a warm welcome in very comfortable and relaxed surroundings.

One of the most recent restaurants to open in the area is the Sultan restaurant on Ibstock’s High Street, offering an authentic taste of an indoor Turkish barbecue to eat in or to takeaway.

The Cinnamon Tree Indian restaurant on Wood Road, between the villages of Ellistown and Battram, is a well-established favourite with diners, receiving great reviews from it’s customers. A highly-trained team create magic in their kitchen, whether you decide to dine-in or to have their delicious food delivered direct to your door.

With a wide variety of high quality fish and chip shops, tearooms, restaurants, pubs and takeaways, offering cuisine from all around the world, the local area is great for food-lovers; so whether you fancy a tasty spicy treat, a traditional family Sunday lunch or a ‘dressed-to-impress’, romantic meal for two, you should always be able to find just what you want on the menu!

Rain fails to scare away Heather’s Scarecrow Festival fans! This year’s Heather Scarecrow Festival was a huge success, despite the heavy rain showers on several days during the week. A constant stream of visitors braved the showers to view the fantastic displays. On the final day, the sun came out, the showers stayed away and the village was crowded with visitors.

c H A R I T Y c H A m P I o N SDynamic ‘Dynamo’ Ride out for charity

As in previous years, the event was very kindly sponsored by ‘The Sunshine Takeaway’, Ibstock.

The cyclists departed from the Whimsey public house early on Sunday morning and, after a journey of over 25miles around the Leicestershire countryside, (and a few beer gardens!) they all eventually made it safely back to the Whimsey in the evening.

For the 11th year, club committee member, Scott Horner, planned the route for the day, and it proved to be a great success(or in the words of club official, Shane Taylor, ‘A real cracker!’.

Overall, the club raised an amazing £840, which is to be split between ‘The Luke Samples Foundation’ and ‘PAPYRUS’ (for the prevention of young suicides).

The club would like to thank everyone who donated so generously and all the pubs for welcoming them and ‘digging deep’ for the charities. Anyone wishing to donate can still do so by getting in touch through the club’s Facebook page.

Anyone interested in playing, helping or sponsoring the club can also get in touch via Sporting Dynamo FC’s Facebook page.

We are a small group of friends who have gathered together to promote mental health awareness in North West Leicestershire.

Our aim is to promote the support and services available in our area and raise awareness. Music is our passion and we hope to communicate and raise awareness through music and music events. We want to encourage our community to talk to and support each other. We want to reduce the stigma and isolation that surrounds mental health problems. But most of all we want you to know that “You’ve got a Friend”.

Welcome to the ‘You’ve got a Friend’ projectSporting Dynamo Football

Club’s annual charity bike ride took place on Sunday, 30th July and, as ever, the club was overwhelmed by the turnout. Over 70 riders turned out to raise money for two charities which are very close to the hearts of the club members.

As well as the scarecrows created by village residents, there were displays by local schools, pre-schools and nurseries. These were judged by ‘Kimbles Music and Movement’, who sponsored that particular competition. Visitors also had the opportunity to vote for their favourite in that category, as well as their favourites in the main competition.

There has been a great many positive comments about the event, which aims to raise funds for the Village Community whilst, at the same time providing an affordable fun day out for families.

The ‘People’s Choice’ winner in the schools, pre-schools and nurseries category was ‘Lego Superheroes’ by Smiz Kids ‘After School and Holiday Club’. They were awarded £40 from the Scarecrow Festival funds, for their great effort.

The organisers have received a great many positive comments about the event, which aims to raise funds for the village community whilst, at the same time, providing an affordable fun day out for local families.

Congratulations to all those who took part in this year’s festival. The entries were all fantastic and, yet again, the standards were extremely high.

Large veg and beautiful blooms filled Ibstock Palace on 19th August as 50 people brought along items from their kitchens and gardens. Some were first timers entering just one class while others brought along over a dozen entries.

Brian Cocket produced an amazing array of vegetables to win trophies for the most firsts and most points in the vegetable section. Mick Gibbins beautiful dahlias were just pipped at the post by Gail Finney’s magnificent gladioli and roses for most firsts and most points in the flower section.

Ron Storer’s marrow weighed in at over 30lb so taking the heaviest marrow class and his parsnips won the Best in Show trophy. To celebrate their diamond anniversary the Judges Guild sponsored a class of 1 pot plant, 1 flower and 1 vegetable which was won by John Flamson

Harriet Hughes, aged 6, won the most points in the children’s section with her artistic colouring and decorated egg and cakes. Children from Holmsdale Nursery and Out of School Clubs made a great entry into the photo competition winning both sections. Congratulations to Oscar and Eva-Rose.

Rachel Elliott gained most points in the domestic section. The jam class proved very hard fought with 19 entries.

This is a great village event which was supported by many residents. Thanks to everyone who entered, sponsored classes, gave raffle prizes and helped on the day. Special thanks to the judges who made a great effort to judge fairly, although not everyone will be happy with their decision and to Roy Whitby for presenting the prizes.

THE ODD ONE OUT!

Do you have any local ‘spooky’ stories?

With Halloween stealthily creeping up on us, we thought we would ask our readers if they have any tales of local ghostly ‘goings-on’!

We have, of course, our two local celebrity spooks, both well known, not just in the immediate locality, but also further afield.

Firstly, ‘5 to 4 Fred’, the ghostly, bottom-slapping, chauvinist,

who is reportedly in the habit of making his presence felt, around tea-time (hence his nick-name) at The Belper Arms, in Newton Burgoland.

We also have the famous ‘White Lady’ at Gracedieu, near Thringstone; a pale, misty apparition, associated with the Augustinian priory ruins there. She has also been reported to wander down to the nearby road and has, on one occasion, actually succeeded in stopping a bus; the driver convinced that

she was a potential passenger. The story goes that he opened the bus door, only to find that she had disappeared into thin air!

Another story recounts how a council man, working at the priory, felt the presence of a woman leaning over him. He turned around in surprise when he was pushed harshly from behind, but no one was there. A police officer passing Gracedieu also witnessed a woman in a long, hooded grey gown crossing the road near to

the site of the ruins.

Here at the Community Voice, we would love to hear about any lesser known stories of spooky local folklore, headless horsemen or things that go bump in the night!

visitors to this year’s Heather church fete were met by a superb display of coloured ‘yarn bombs’, made up of a wonderful mass of woollen flowers and sea creatures festooning the building.

Friends of the church have spent many hours knitting away to produce these beautiful works of art, which were very much admired and appreciated. By generously giving of their time and talent, this local group of good friends, helped to raise an amazing £1012.20. These funds will be put towards the restoration of the much loved tower of the parish church. The knitting pins are once again in action, producing items for their Christmas stall, the date of which is still to be confirmed.

The organisers wish to extend a special ‘thank you’ to local lady, Janice Mee, for entertaining the audience, during the event, with her solo operatic performance. If anyone has any surplus wool which they would like to donate, please contact Paula, on Tel: 01530 264394.

WORLD HEART DAy FRIDAy 29th SEPTEMBER

‘At the Heart of Health’Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) continues to be the leading cause of death in the world today. But the good news is that much CVD can be prevented by making just a few daily changes in our lifestyles, like eating and drinking more healthily, taking more exercise and stopping smoking.

Physical inactivity is one of the most significant contributors to heart disease as it can lead to unhealthy weight-gain, diabetes and raised blood pressure. Though only the size of a closed fist, the heart works as the body’s own circulatory ‘pump’ and like all muscles it needs exercise to stay toned and functional to respond to our everyday needs. Combining aerobic activity such as brisk walking, swimming or aerobic classes alongside muscle strengthening and stretching exercises can all help to improve and maintain a healthy heart.

World Heart Day aims to raise awareness of how important it is to take care of our hearts, the life force of our being. It’s 2017 theme; ‘Fuel it, Move it, Love it’ encouraging us to take control of our heart health by getting more active! T

Their tips and recommendations:

Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity 5 times a week

Playing, walking, housework, dancing – they all count

Be more active every day; take the stairs, walk or cycle instead of driving

Exercise with friends or family, its more motivating and much more fun!

Before you start any exercise plan check with a healthcare professional

Download an exercise app or use a pedometer to keep track of your progress

A Healthy Heart is a Happy Heart!

Starting from this month we have a series of new topical short stories featuring that mischievous rail dog, Ruffle, called ‘Ruffle’s Walks’.

Within each story Ruffle will send a secret word to his readers in the form of underlined, italic capital letters scattered in the text. Once you have found the letters, rearrange them to form a word that is relevant to that month’s story. At the bottom of each story it will tell you how many letters you are looking for. The actual word answer will be shown on page 23. Woof - have fun!

For more information about Ruffle’s storybooks visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk

Ruffle’s walks – back to school!Ruffle trotted proudly beside Eric as they made their way to the village school. Eric regularly visited the school to listen to some of the children read to help practise their reading and listening skills, but this morning Eric had arranged to take Ruffle along with him as an extra treat for the children. Ruffle had Been given a good brush and trim – even his beard looked clean!

Eric held Ruffle’s lead as they made theiR way inside the school and Into the library where the children usually gathered to read. The library had lots of comfy seats and brightly coloured beanbags for the children to sit on. Eric sat on a normal chair that the librarian had found for him as there had been quite a struggle getting Eric up from a beanbag on a previous visit!

Ruffle sat down next to Eric’s chair, ready for the children to arrive. Very soon five children came through the library doors, eager to meet and read to Ruffle. His taiL wagged furiously as he greeted the excited children. Once they had settled on the chairs and sat Ruffle down again, they showed Eric the books that they were reading. All the children had chosen books about dogs! Some books were made up stories – fiction books, others had lots of facts and interesting bits of knowledge About the different dog breeds.

In turn, each of the five children read part of their book. Ruffle sat and listened to each one; tales of adventure, bravery, mischief and playfulness. Once everyone had had their turn, it was Eric’s go. Instead of Reading from a book, Eric decided to tell the children about some of Ruffle’s adventures. Ruffle lay down against the children’s legs as they sat listening to Eric describe how Ruffle had travelled on the steam train, ‘helped’ at the TeddY Bear’s Picnic and even appeared in a film!

It was soon time for the children to return to their class – with imaginations filled with new ideas for stories. As Eric and Ruffle set off back to the little station, Eric wondered what Ruffle story he would be telling the children about next time…

The winner - Remembrance Crow

As most schools were winding down ready for the summer break the children and staff at Woodstone were gearing up for a special celebration after months of hard work.

Woodstone celebrates it’s Forest School opening

On Thursday July 13th parents, children and invited guests gathered on the field of Woodstone Community Primary School in Ravenstone to celebrate the official Forest School opening. Grace Clement (Forest School Lead at the school), the children and a number of parent volunteers have spent months working in the woodland area getting it ready for the school to use for outdoor learning.

Headteacher, Pat Mullins said, “This day sees the culmination of months of hard work, with the official opening of the Forest School. We were very fortunate that Leicestershire Local Authority liked our plans for the area and signed it over to us on a long term lease. The learning opportunities for the children are endless and we are fortunate to have a staff who really see the benefits of outdoor learning.”

Back in February, the school held a competition to name the woodland. The winner was Jenson Petty who came up with the name ‘Dusty’s Wood’, named after Dusty Beesley – a popular and well known

businessman in the area. Jenson’s design was then illustrated by Gracie-Mai Mugglestone. The sign can be seen as you drive past the school on Heather Lane.

David and Carol Beesley (owners of Beesley’s Garden Centre in Ravenstone) were proud to be asked to come and cut the ribbon for this prestigious day and kindly donated a magnificent cedar tree (a favourite of Dusty’s) as well as various other plants.

The school also worked with Ravenstone Hall owners, Charles and Jemima Wade (who hosted a village bonfire to help raise funds) and the Beesleys to commission a really special opening to the new woodland. This was carved out of oak from the Charnwood Forest by local carpenter Ian Varley from Rustic Carpentry. The final result was stunning and Mr Mullins and his team are rightly extremely proud of their new area and are looking forward to getting it fully operational in the new academic year.

The rain held off until late in the day and, when the sun did break-through, it was the perfect afternoon for enjoying the wide variety of refreshments, entertainments and trade stalls on offer.

Arena events were tailored to appeal to all ages and ranged from the amazing Welsh Axemen to sheepdog trails, falconry and the majestic steam-engines, plus many additional entertaining displays.

The classic and vintage vehicles continued to be very popular and conjured up much nostalgia for the more relaxed bygone days of motoring. Bringing the transport theme right up date, the helicopter rides proved extremely popular, with a constant queue of people wanting to experience this unique form of transport and get a ‘bird’s eye’ view of the area.

Musical entertainment included marching and brass bands and a Scottish pipe band and youngsters were well catered for, with ‘hands-on’ animal opportunities, fairground rides and side-stalls.

See you all next year!

continued success for Ibstock country FairThe unpredictable and unsettled weather did not deter the crowds that attended Ibstock’s 2017 Country Fair and it was hailed as a very popular success. There appeared to be more people in attendance and more attractions on display then ever.

The vision and goal of Mark and Sallyann PadgettWe searched for many years for a building which we could purchase and convert. It was important to us to find a place which could serve the community, accommodate my gym business and provide space for other community serving businesses. We looked at numerous properties, but as soon as we saw the former St. James’s Church on Highfield Street, Coalville, we knew that we had found the right one. Our goal was to be respectful of St. James’s history when we carried out the refurbishment. We retained, framed and mounted the stain glass windows onto the walls. We moved the font to the front part of the building and adapted it to receive donations and money raised for LOROS. We tiled the concrete floor of the front porch to create a welcome which was in keeping to the history and age of the building.

A little bit of historySt James’s was built by Walter Moss as a C of E Church for the parish of Snibston in 1915. It was designed by the same architects used for De Montfort Hall in Leicester, Stockdale Harrison and Son, and it has many stunning and unique features.

The church served the community well, until closing in 2007. It was put up for sale and stood empty, until our offer was accepted in 2010. It took until 2013 to finally secure the building, then a further year to complete the refit in 2014. Finally, in 2016, the first tenants moved in. The beautiful building that you see today is a testament to our determination and passion for the project, with a true sense of making the building open and useful to the community once again.

Celebrating 3 years in businessNow, seven years on, and after a 3 year purchase and a one year refurbishment, we are celebrating 3 years since we formally opened St. James Business Centre. We have created a pleasant and unique working environment, which our gym facility (see picture) now shares with 6 other businesses, which offer foot healthcare, holistic therapies, hairdressing, photography, acupuncture, tattooing and graphic design.

ANSWERS:

A) George Alan O’Dowd aka ‘Boy George’

B) Prince George of Cambridge

C) George (Georgina)

D) St George

The answer to all of the clues is the name ‘George’, but George in The Famous Five was actually a girl named Georgina. All the others are male. Therefore C is the odd one out.

AB FAB Fabulous! As ‘AB FAB Vintage’ head towards their first birthday, since opening on 1st October 2016, in the Ibstock Business Centre, they put their success firmly down to all the local support that they have received. The feedback has been very positive, with people saying how much they love looking in the window and browsing in the shop. They enjoy reminiscing as so many of the items on sale evoke childhood memories.

The shop is a co-operative of local people, selling a variety of wares including vintage, antiques, gifts, collectables and crafts. A recently opened furniture store, near to the High Street shop, is proving very popular. It stocks furniture, both old and new, at very competitive prices, with new stock arriving daily.

They have held several events throughout the year, including a ‘Pimms and strawberries’ event and a stall at the Ibstock Country Fair, which proved a great success. A recent valuation day, with Hansen’s valuers, raised funds for Ibstock Football Club.

Lots more events are planned, including late night openings in the run up to Christmas. A coffee morning for Macmillan Cancer will take place on 29th September.

The details are available on their Facebook page, which has now received over 600 likes. The page is updated daily with new items and events.

They also offer a sympathetic house clearance service and are happy to assist in getting fair valuations.

There is always a friendly welcome on offer for people popping in for a chat and cup of tea.

They extend their thanks to everyone who has supported them on their journey and are looking forward to their next year.
