Meeting Sunday.15th April

Unfortunately not a lot in attendance as there were other areas running workshops, the holiday break and several members away on holidays. However, with twenty members ready to go we were off to a flying start to another successful meeting. Discussions revolved around------------ The Hobby Society Two members attended a Saturday session where they were taught and instructed in the making of a bowl. A photographer from the Society attended and was very pleased with the pics he was able to take on the day. Thank you Meg and Rupert for giving your time to teach and supervise the students on a one to one basis throughout the session. Bunnings We have another B BBQ Day this coming Saturday please give us a hand if you can. The Saturday barbeque is a big one. Insurance We are still looking deeply into insurance cover to hopefully see if we are appropriately covered and if not if we could do better. Working with Wood Show The Working With Wood Show is on again this year at Sydney Showground Olympic Park, on the 22nd, 23rd and the 24th of June. If you are interested in admission Tickets and parking tickets please speak to John Cottle and he will advise you of the prices and order and collect tickets for you. David King needs helpers to assist in the setting up and dismantling of the display. If you are able to help please also contact John Cottle.

Show and Tell

The Challenge: - Turn and exhibit a lidded box of choice. Following the success of his Money Box challenge, after much thought, Graham devised this one. Meg again delighted members by her introduction of the items on display……

Gary Cox… Gary’s collection of ducks and cars has grown since last month. With Christmas fast approaching Gary is now our “Master Toy Maker” . Watch out Lloyd !

Jack Butler…. The challenge surpassed! .Two, twelve segmented lidded boxes that set the bench mark for us all. The smallest of Merbau and Huon Pine the other of Jacaranda and veneer. Then a lidded box with castellated feet and top.

Robert Morton (Mr. Bamboo) Yes, a fine example of combining bamboo and merbau. The pyrography on the bamboo was given 10/10 by Meg our pyrography champion.

Libby and Greg Beaman… Four very attractive and very different items. Three little boxes decorated with natural items (shells and seeds collected from the beach). An inlaid shell decorated this disc shaped vase complete with native grass from the garden.

John Redding… This unusual medium size burl box is topped by a knob made from yew. John commented on how he had to fit the lid, a real challenge.

Graham Truelove… Two matching laminated Merbau boxes with colorful inlaid lids. A “true box shape” item made from a stair case banister. A serrated edge (design change) box with lid showed how Graham met his own challenge.

Thanks to Tim MacGregor for the S & T notes.& Paul Johnson-Walker for the photos.

Alex Bendeli ….A delightful little lidded box with a story. ! This is a replica of a box that was stolen as a result of a home break in. The decorated lid is from a drawing that he did when he was 12years old. The same drawing is also here etched into a platter that he turned.

June McKimmie … Here is the large Silky Oak bowl now oiled and finished. It was the by-product from June’s recent Sunday demonstration and with a bark feature, this lidded box is made from Coastal Banksia

Tim MacGregor… This lidded box is made from an Olive tree from his sister- in- law’s orchard. Finished in EEE and Orange Oil.

Meg Webster… Cotoneaster timber was the feature of this beautifully turned lidded box. The offset turned lids, for the bottle brush box, showed how “latticing” should be done. To quote Meg “perseverance wins when you use this technique”.

These were a ‘work in progress’. For inspiration Google ‘Hans Weisflog Latticing. http://s3.amazonaws.com/cmwt.production/paperclip/files/82/Hans_Weissflog_Spider_Box.pdf?1328056966

Another great effort by all who participated. And don’t forget by accepting these challenges, YOU Keep the mind active and are learning something more everytime And Practice Practice Practice makes you Better Better Better (It’s a very strange thing but the more you practice the better you get). So with that in mind THE SHOW AND TELL CHALLENGE FOR THE MAY MEETING IS TO :-

Turn a spinning top---- and to help you along-------Meg is demonstrating today and she is going to show how to turn a top and a holding device to spin the top with.

Demonstration Meg started from scratch showing us all the tricks of the trade (and what great hints they were) things like drilling the holes where required before turning the timber down and turning down the widest diameters first and so on and so on. Meg not only gives all the tips but she explains why to do it that way--- and when it is put to you in such a way it certainly makes you take note. At one stage Meg stopped and asked if everyone was alright. The reason for her asking was-- that it was so quite you could have heard a pin drop. But the reason for the quietness was everyone was so intent on taking it all in. She certainly had a captured audience. Meg proved today that she is certainly our “TOP TURNER” Thanks heaps Meg it was thoroughly enjoyable and very informative

This should be a real good challenge. Come on everybody let’s see everyone have a go. Meg has provided the plans, see Graham and he will give you a copy.
