26 FEB 2014 “I’VE BEEN CLEANING ALL MY LIFE…”

MAYBE IT IS TIME TO GET PAID TO DO IT? Everyday, someone comes in and starts their conversation with the “Job-A-Ranger” by looking him in the eye and (going on for an extended period of time) in tearing themselves down because they have no professional work history. They are confussed by the difference between experience and skills or abilities. They don’t understand that most entry or re-entry level jobs do not require an actual, professional work history. This is why they are entry level jobs. The employers are looking not for a trained pro. The employers are looking for someone who have the basic skills, abilities and desire to learn to become a professional. With this type of job, the employer is looking mostly for availability and a desire to work for their company and that you want to do a specific job.

In the world of entry or re-entry jobs experience is many times a negative. This is a world where it is more important that you know how to ride a bicycle instead of where or when you learned to ride. Everytime your natural skills and abilities are enough to get you a job. If you add to that open availability and a desire to do the job that you applied for you are a dream applicant to that employer. The standard response that the “Job-A-Ranger” gets back is “BUT…I don’t have any skills because “I have been a stay-out home parent!”

The truth is that for many occupations, a stay-at-home parent would (almost) be considered over qualified because they have been doing the actual work for “all their life!” The idea is to grasp that concept and learn how to communicate with the employer. No more than you would want to be speaking Polish to an employer who is speaking English; you don’t want to be talking experience when the employer is speaking skills and abilities. If the employer and you are speaking the same language, then your chances of getting hired will greatly improve.

Basic skills in the cleaning industry are (these skills help get you hired) Do you (have you) know how to mop a floor? Can you run a vacumn cleaner?

Do you know how to sweep the kitchen floor? Do you know how to wax a floor?

Do you (have you) know how to dust? Do you know how clean windows? Do you know how to clean a mirror?

Do you (have you) know how to wash a dish? Do you know how to clean pots and pans?

Do you (have you) know how to clean your own room? Do you know how to make a bed? Do you know how to wash sheets and towels? Do you know of to fold sheets?

If you answered the majority of these questions with “yes” then, you are (almost) over qualified to be in the cleaning industry. The question of “IF” you get hired will have nothing to do with your skill set. The reason will come down to: Availability or your lack of availability to work the days and/or hours that they employer needs you to work.

Motivation or your lack of interest in the employer’s company and/or the specific job that you applied for. If you come across as this is your job of last resort or that you don’t like this type of work or that you will take this until you get a better offer. If you follow the simple program of the Used Job Shack, do your homework and take your “A” Game with you to ther interview, then you stand a good chance of getting that job.

THE CLEANING INDUSTRY The cleaning industry ranges from taking care or cleaning someone’s home to cleaning 12-14 hotel rooms per day to cleaning large corporate offices and all the way to wearing a “bunny suit” to clean manufacturing clean rooms. The salaries can range from miminum wage to $24+/HR. This is an industry where you can start your own business, you can work PT/FT or sellect the hours that you want to work. The opportunities are there to work where you feel most confortable, be it cleaning at a school to dusting the Governor’s Office (even the White House has a cleaning crew…think the President washes his own sheets and bedspread?

THE HOME COMPANION SHOPING GUIDE TO WORKING IN THE CLEANING INDUSTRY There are a few big dogs in this market, some mutts and quite a few puppies. Many large companies run their own cleaning crews (like the hotels/motels/resorts) while others hire smaller companies to do the work for them.

If you are interested in working for a large company doing janitorial or maintemance work, see if they are running help wanted ads.

If they are running ads then all you need is “RULE NUMBER FOUR” to help you assemble an application that will get you past the computer gate keeper and into an interview.

If they aren’t or don’t run ads then that means that they contract the work out to a smaller company.

If they contract the work out, it is easy to find out who that company is by calling the business office and asking them just that (now you know who to contact).

If the company is small, don’t waste time sending your killer resume out to every cleaning company this side of the Mississippi, they won’t (for the most part) even read it anymore than you read the junk mail that you get in the mail. The key here is to go local and to go “OLD SCHOOL..”

This means that you need to go to www.yellowpages.com to generate a list of all the cleaning companies within 5-10 miles of where you live or want to live. Use this list to research each company to find out who they are and how do they hire. Most times, the easiest, directest and the simplest solution is to sruce yourself up to look like you are on your way to work, do your homework so that you can have an intelligent conversation about their business (or industry), put on your walking shoes and go out and start knocking on doors. This is very effective because most of these small companies don’t have the money nor the time to run an ad except as a despert, last measure. Here Old Lady Luck can and will be your friend. You may will find yourself at the right place, at the right time, saying the right thing to the right person and get the job. Couldn’t hurt could it?

The key concept here is to get yourself out and in front of as many people (face-to-face) as you can within this industry or who are somewhere in the food chain of making a hiring decision.

No one has ever been hired by resume or application alone.

The resume/application is a prop to get attention that you hope will lead to an

interview. Why not cut out the middle steps and go out and get yourself in direct contact with a person who can hire you? Cut out all of the middle men (people) and the great thing with these small cleaning companies is that you can do just that – if you try.
