So do you need to upgrade your
laptop?
Here’s a list of comprehensive
questions for you to consider before
making that important and costly
decision.
![Page 3: Do I Need To Upgrade My Laptop](https://reader038.vdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022100507/55941f1c1a28ab37128b45a1/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
How long have you had your
laptop? If your laptop is over a year old, you will notice it getting
slower:
When you start up your laptop
Opening the browser
Using applications from the office suite.
Why is this so?
Temporary files are stored and edits are made to the system which will slow down your laptop in time hence it is a lot slower than when you first bought it.
So before you start thinking about upgrading or getting a new laptop, save all the data on your PC and reinstall the whole computer operating system.
If it is still slow after installing all the programs you need, then make the decision to buy a new computer or add more RAM.

Have you done a virus
scan? Your laptop may be slow because it is
infected by a virus. Use an antivirus software to scan your
computer and see there are any malicious viruses. Removing these viruses will normally improve the speed.
Bear in mind your laptop may be slow because the software is scanning for viruses and it does so by going to each file and folder on your hard disk.
Scan your laptop at a time when you won’t be using the computer. Eg. lunch time.

Is your hard disk running out
of space? It is obvious that a full disk will make
your laptop run slower. So it’s time to
clear all unwanted applications and
data files.
After you have freed up your hard disk
space, run the utility Disk
Defragmenter to reorganise the space
on your hard drive to ensure your
laptop runs smoothly.

Did problems occur after
installing a new software? If your laptop started to slow down after
installing a new application then most likely the application is affecting your computer.
Uninstall the application and see the situation improves
Check the application’s recommended hardware requirements to see if it matches your computer’s hardware.
If it doesn’t match, will adding/upgrading your hardware solve the problem?

Is it time to upgrade your
Operating System? Sometimes you may need to upgrade
your hardware to support a new
operating system if not your computer
may slow down or worst, not work.
Similar to the slide before, check to
see if your motherboard can support
more RAM.

Any components need to be
replace? Most of the time, you only upgrade a
particular accessory. Eg. Sound card,
graphics card.
You only need to replace your
computer because the accessories
you want to upgrade isn’t supported
by the your motherboard, for example:
- You need more RAM but your
motherboard doesn’t have enough
slots

Conclusion
The rule of thumb is to compare the
cost of upgrading to the cost of buying
a new laptop.
If the prices are relatively the same
then you are better off buying a new
laptop to save you time and trouble.
