You will have to do three assignments in all. Each Tutor Marked Assignment carries 100 marks. The course-wise distribution of assignments is as follows:

A Note of Caution

It has been noticed that some students are sending answers to Check Your Progress Exercises to the University for evaluation. Please do not send them to us. These exercises are given to help in judging your own progress. For this purpose, we have provided the answers to these exercises at the end of each Unit. We have already mentioned this in the Programme Guide.

Before despatching your answer script, please make sure you have taken care of the following points:

Your roll number, name and address have been written correctly. The title of the course and assignment number have been written clearly. Each assignment has been written on separate sheets and pinned properly. All the questions in the assignments have been answered.

Now read the guidelines before answering questions.

GUIDELINES FOR TMA

The Tutor Marked Assignments have two parts.

Section A: Descriptive Questions (60-80 marks)In this section, you have to answer questions of descriptive type.

Section B: Practical Activities (20-40 marks)You would be required to submit your responses to activities given in Practical Manuals 1, 2 and 3 respectively.

POINTS TO KEEP IN MIND

You will find it useful to keep the following points in mind:

1) Planning: Read the assignments carefully. Go through the units on which they are based. Make some points regarding each question and then rearrange these in a logical order.

2) Organization: Be a little more selective and analytical. Give attention to your introduction and conclusion. The introduction must offer your brief interpretation of the question and how you propose to develop it. The conclusion must summarize your response to the question.

Make sure that your answer:a) is logical and coherent;b) has clear connections between sentences and paragraphs;c) is written correctly giving adequate consideration to your expression, style and

presentation;d) does not exceed the number of words indicated in the question.

3) Presentations: Once you are satisfied with your answers, you can write down the final version for submission, writing each answer neatly and underline the points you wish to emphasize.

Section A – Descriptive Type Questions (60 marks)

There are ten short questions in this part. Answer all questions. Each question carries 6 marks.

1.a)Define the terms nutrition and nutritional status . (2)

b) Briefly explain the role of vitamin A in maintaining normal vision (4)

2.a) Describe any two simple tests to detect adulteration in edible oils. (2)

b) Briefly discuss the steps you would follow while planning a short term food budget. (4)

3.a) Briefly explain the factors influencing the absorption of iron and calcium from the diet. (4)

b) What will be the total vitamin A content of diet supplying 50 microgram retinol and 2800 microgram carotene. (2)

4. Briefly explain how the nutrient needs of adults are influenced by the following factors. (6)

(i) Activity level(ii) Body size/composition(iii) Age

5. (a) List any four dietary considerations that should be kept in mind while planning meals for each of the following: (6)

(i) preschool child(ii) pregnant women(iii) adolescents

6. What are the objectives and components of the: (3+3)

(i) Mid-day meal programme(ii) ICDS

7. a) Briefly describe the guidelines to be followed while conducting a diet survey using 24 hour recall method. (4)

b) List the methods for control of iodine deficiency disorders. (2)

8. Briefly discuss the microorganisms responsible for food spoilage. Substantiate your answer with examples. (6)

9. List down the clinical manifestations of CHD. Briefly discuss the dietary modifications of various nutrients in CHD. (6)

10. Briefly discuss the causative factors and prevention of PEM. (6)

Section B - Practical Activities (40 marks)

There are four exercises in this section. These exercises are based on Practical Manual 1. Answer all four.

1. Based on the steps involved in planning balanced diets prepare a diet for a adult female having a sedentary lifestyle and belonging to low socio-economic group. (10)

2 Prepare any two nutritions snacks for children and evaluate them using a score card based on different characteristics as mentioned in section 6.5. (10)

3. Look up section 2 activity 3. Read the activity carefully and record your result in the proforma provided. (10)

4. Prepare a snack rich in fibre, iron, adequate in protein and low in calories for a elderly person. Your answer must specify. (10)(i) Name of the snack(ii) List of ingredients(iii) Method of preparation(iv) Sources of iron, fibre and protein included.

1) (a) Briefly discuss the different sources for collecting data on vital statistics. (6)

(b) Briefly discuss the measures beyond family planning that can regulate the population growth. (4)

2) What are the different agents of contamination? Discuss by giving suitable examples. (10)

3) Briefly discuss the preventive measures and management of the following diseases: (20)

(i) Whooping cough (ii) Tuberculosis (iii) Malaria (iv) Leprosy

4) Briefly discuss the types and the conditions which necessitate to special feeding methods. (5)

5) (a) Briefly discuss the symptoms of diabetes. List the major dietary goals for management of diabetes. (10)

(b) Briefly discuss the role of NGO’s in promoting environmental protection. (5)

Section B - AQ (Application Questions) (40 marks)

There are four questions in this part. Each question carries 10 marks. Answer all the questions.

1. Conduct a survey in your locality and collect information on the different measures adopted at the household level for disinfecting water. Present your answer in tabulated form. (10)

2. Conduct a survey in your locality to find out about the practices adopted to treat and control diarrhea at home. Use the format given in practical activity 1 to record your results. (10)

3. Write down ten messages to promote environmental protection. (10)

4. What kind of diet would you prescribe to Kamal who is suffering from irritable colon syndrome. Also prepare a list of foods which are permitted and foods which have to be avoided. (10)

1) Define the term health. Briefly discuss the different dimensions of health. (10)

2) What are machine operated devices? Discuss the advantages and limitations of machine operated devices. (10)

3) Briefly discuss the concept of analytical approach in the context of nutrition and health education. (10)

4) Write short notes on the following : (5+5)(a) Planning and preparation of software for mass media. (b) Techniques to collect information on knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) in

the community.

5) List down the supplementary feeding programmes undertaken by the Government to combat malnutrition. Briefly discuss any two programmes. (10)

6) List the levels involved in organizing nutrition/health programmes/campaigns. Explain any two levels briefly, highlighting its salient features. (10)

Section: B - AQ (Application Questions) (40 Marks)

1. a) Give any four clues for developing games for educational purpose (4) b) Design / prepare a poster / chart / banner etc, related to the management of diarrhea. (6)

2. Develop any two indoor educational games that can be used to educate people about the three food groups and their sources. (10)
