COMMUNITY NEWSPark Island — Issue 4 — 2015

Season’s Greeting

Community comes together A community barbecue was hosted at Park Island on 24 October 2015. The event took off with games and other fun activities to keep kids and adults entertained. A key feature of the event was an educational and informative session with a representative from the insurance team to clarify residents’ queries related to contents and community insurance. Residents thoroughly enjoyed the event and have requested for more such social gatherings to be organised.

Community enhancement at zero cost In a significant move forward, the main contractor of the community was brought back in to rectify some construction related issues in the common areas. The rectification work has commenced in full swing and water seepage issues in the female and male changing rooms have already been fixed. The contractor will continue to address and resolve any other water proofing related issues. All this has been done at no cost to the community.

Space to play Our youngest residents in the community now have a new place of their own to play in, with the refurbishment of the kids’ play area. As part of community enhancement initiatives, the aged and stained flooring was replaced with new and fresh rubber tiles which are anti-slip, environment friendly and impact absorbing. In addition, touch ups and repairs were also carried out on the play equipment to provide a safe and happy environment for kids.

The Jacuzzi/spa in the community did not have a shower facility and the one available is located a short distance away. For the convenience of the residents and spa users, a contractor has been appointed to build a shower cubicle inside the Jacuzzi room. This is slated for completion by the end of the year and will add value to the facility.

Added facility for extra convenience

Energy conservation is a key element in efforts to reduce utility costs and greenhouse gas emissions. As part of an energy management programme, there are plans to introduce socially and environmentally sustainable products and solutions in our communities.

In line with cost saving initiatives to reduce the community expenses, new wet-wall systems (adiabatic systems) are being procured to be installed on all the community chillers. These new systems are expected to enhance the functioning of the chillers and reduce water and energy consumption to provide significant savings in the utility expenses for airconditioning in 2016.

Bringing down cooling costs

Squash Tournament 2015 Yet another fantastic squash tournament was hosted in October 2015 at the squash arena in Marina Promenade. In its third consecutive year, the residents-only tournament was well received and finished with an exciting final that was immensely entertaining.

Participating residents were from Marina Quays, Park Island, Marina Promenade and Al Sahab. Squash enthusiasts played round-robin stages, advancing to quarter-, semi-finals and finals with family and friends cheering them on. All 19 games proved to be electrifying, exciting and intense with skill and tenacity on display.

Mahender Bisht emerged winner of the tournament after beating Joe Zakzak in a nail-biting final. After the tournament, everyone had the opportunity to meet and mingle on the deck of The Promenade where they were served with refreshments. Participants were thrilled to be part of the tournament and said that they look forward to many more games in the months to come.

As part of continued efforts to deliver strong, professional and effective security coverage in line with government regulations, additional cameras will be installed in key areas of the community. This will include all the floor corridors, tower receptions and entry and exit points. The installation is scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2016.

Marking Martyr’s Day All Emaar communities were part of the Flag Day campaign to honour the brave martyrs of the UAE Armed Forces who heroically laid down their lives for the nation. To express solidarity with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the leaders of the UAE and the nation, the UAE national flag was raised at gatehouses, roundabouts and prominent locations in our communities.

Golden Age Group gets travel discounts The Golden Age Group in The Greens & Views community was behind yet another first-of-its-kind initiative for senior citizens. The group, together with Emaar Community Management (ECM), worked with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and negotiated a 50% fare discount on public transportation – for all residents in Dubai over 60 years of age!

This is a major accomplishment for ECM in line with our Corporate Social Responsibility commitments. More importantly, this is the first time that such an initiative has been undertaken for the expatriate population in Dubai. To benefit from this landmark achievement, all a senior citizen has to do, is take a copy of her/his Emirates ID and two photographs to the ticket counter at any Metro Station. Once submitted, they will receive the special Blue NOL card, as displayed. Please spread the message to senior citizens you know who can benefit from this fantastic initiative.

Simple tips to using your mailbox The community mailbox is a convenient facility that helps you receive important

communication or packages without having to travel all the way to the post office to pick it

up. To enable you to make the best use of this amenity, here are a few pointers on how to use

your community mailbox:

1. Remember, the mailbox facility is only for letters or parcels received via normal post

2. The mailbox key should always be in the possession of the unit owner/resident

3. Concierge/Security will not give access to the mailbox to any unit owner/resident

4. Do not leave your apartment keys in the mailbox

5. Do not leave any valuable items in the mailbox

6. Ensure that the mailbox is kept locked at all times

Keep your home safe on vacation: 9 essential tipsHoliday season is here and for many of us that means it’s time to take a break. So here are few simple things you can do to keep your home safe so you concentrate on enjoying yourself, rather than worrying about your property.

1. Start with your doorstep: Nothing is more of a giveaway than old newspapers piled outside your door; so put your subscription on hold for the duration of your holiday. You could also ask a neighbour to remove anything else that gets dropped on your doorstep.

2. Keep your lights on: Consider putting your lights on a timer so it appears someone’s at home. But if you’re going to do this, make sure you shut the blinds so you’re not obviously lighting up an empty house!

3. Home security: Ensure all the doors and windows of your house are closed and locked. Look out for areas that have weak points. Inform one of your relatives or someone you trust to periodically check your house while you are away.

4. Don’t spread the word: Limit how many people know you’re leaving. You’ll probably need to set up an ‘Out of Office’ message on your work email, but avoid doing the same on personal emails or voicemail. Be careful of informing everyone on social media about your holiday plans. You never know who is reading your post.

5. Invest in a safe: Avoid leaving any valuable materials, important documents, money or jewellery in your wardrobe without locking it securely. Use a safe to store any valuables that you’re not taking with you. You can buy one at most hardware stores.

6. Check your vehicles: Avoid leaving the keys of your car or any other vehicle in obvious places while you are on holiday. Remove any valuables stored in your vehicles. For added safety, you could also consider disconnecting the battery.

7. Switch off: Appliances left on standby use electricity all the time, which can add up to a significant amount if you’re going away for several weeks. Turning them off is not only better for the environment but will also eliminate the chance of anything catching fire. Make sure you switch off any appliances you don’t need.

8. Get Contents Insurance: In case something unexpected happens to your home while you’re away, Contents Insurance will cover the contents of your unit such as furniture, electrical appliances, curtains, carpets and paint finishes on walls and ceilings.

9. Avail Dubai Police assistance: Subscribe to the Home Safety Program by the Dubai Police so you can be contacted in case there is a problem while you are away. To subscribe to this service, visit dubaipolice.gov.ae and fill in the application form. Any suggestions or complaints can be sent to [email protected]

Fright night in the communities Creepy crawlies, scary monsters, cute minions, cartoon characters and all things Halloween came alive at the annual Halloween Event

and Costume Contest that was hosted across Emirates Living, Downtown Dubai, The Greens & Views and Mistral, Umm Al Quwain on

Friday, 30 October 2015. The event at Arabian Ranches and Dubai Marina Towers was held on Saturday, 31 October 2015.

Children had a frightfully delightful day with arts and crafts corners, haunted houses and beanbag theatres while food stations served

snacks and beverages. The highlight of the event was the Costume Contest, in which children participated for a chance to win a trophy

in various categories. This was followed by trick or treating in the villa communities, as groups went door to door to claim their candy.

From the looks of it, everyone had a great time and we look forward to another fright night next year.
