Hello Division 38!

This last past month has surely been a busy one for our division. From Relay for Life to Tacoma Rally, I’ve been honored to get to know many of you better while bettering our community. I was so proud of our division when we won the sprit stick at Tacoma Rally. I know that with the rising temperatures and long days at the lake, it can often be hard to focus on Key Club and service. But remember that just because everyone’s out of school doesn’t mean that the need for service does. In fact, this is the perfect time to serve even more because there is no school to worry about. This is also the optimal time to start fundraising not only for the ELIMINATE Project but also to start raising funds for next year’s DCON. I want to make sure that everyone who wants to go isn’t held back because of a lack of funding. That’s why each club needs to make sure that they have enough money set aside to pay for part of everyone’s trip.

I personally just got back from a week in Washington D.C. for Key Club International Convention. While there, I had the opportunity to meet Key Clubbers from across the world and attend many informational workshops taught by the international board. I hope to implement the new techniques I learned into our division in the upcoming months.

Finally, Seattle Rally is a little more than just a month away. Please promote this event to your club and I hope to see many of you there!

In Care and Service,

Kevin Zhang

What is the ELIMINATE Project?

The Eliminate Project is a joint project with Kiwanis and UNICEF to internationally terminate

MNT.

What is MNT?

MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.

Who suffers from MNT?

In 30 countries around the world, maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every nine minutes. Its effects are excruciating– tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival. And tetanus kills mothers too.

What is Key Leader?

Key Leader is a weekend experiential leadership program for today's young leaders. This life-changing event focuses on service leadership as the first, most meaningful leadership-development experience. A Key Leader will learn the most important lesson of

leadership—it comes from helping others succeed.

Participants begin by attending a Key Leader conference, which is a weekend retreat. Large and small group workshops, discussions and team-building activities take place over the course of the weekend. Students have opportunities to learn leadership skills that will help them to change their schools, communities, and world for the better. While exploring leadership in a whole new way, participants will make amazing new friends and have experiences they will never forget. Positive, ongoing interaction with other Key Leader graduates offers continuing reinforcement, encouragement and growth of leadership skills.

2013 Weekend Event:

Camp Crestview (Corbett, Oregon): October 18- 20, 2013

Relay For Life Recap

The 24th annual Relay for Life of Thurston County was held on June 21st at Timberline High School starting at 6:00 pm. Both the Olympia High School and Capital High School Key Clubs from our division participated

in the 24 hour walk-a-thon. Many of the students actually stayed and walked the entire 24 hours. The two

schools were part of the team, “Students for Coach McDougall”. This team was dedicated to Olympia High School baseball coach Todd McDougal who is currently going through treatment for his brain cancer. Also at the event was cancer survivor, Kiwanian, and Former

Secretary of State Sam Reed.

Applebee’s Fundraiser

the ELIMINATE Project

This Month’s S.T.A.R. Award Goes To…

Capital High School

Congratulations to Capital High School for winning June’s S.T.A.R. Award. Not only did they have the highest attendance rate at Relay for Life, they also sent the most members to Tacoma Rally. Their club also participated in the Tacoma Rally talent show. A secretary report was also filed on time by the club Secretary, Sangdy Lang. This is Capital High School’s second S.T.A.R. award.

Communication between the Lieutenant Governor and club has been stellar! Great job CHS and keep up the great work!

Did you club not win this month? Don’t give

up! At the beginning of each month, the

points are reset to zero and everyone once

again has an equal opportunity to win an

award. Remember, the club with the most

number of awards (see left) by DCON 2014 will

have first choice of seats within our division.

Keep working hard and who knows, next

month’s S.T.A.R. award might just be yours!

A message from Convention Aide, Cleo Tsang:

Hello! Thanks for showing an interest in contributing the

DCON 2014! If you’re reading this right now, it means that

you want to help design the logo. There are four things you

can design:

1. Logo for the pin

2. T-Shirt Design

3. Logo for the bag

4. Logo for the lanyard

Keep in mind, that all four components can have the same

design/logo. You can choose to submit either all or just one

component.

Each design must include the following things in the image

and the bolded items mean they are only applicable to the

pin:

The words “Pacific Northwest” or “PNW”

The words “65th Annual DCON” or “65th Annual District

Convention”

The theme name!

Coordinate according to the chosen theme

A moose

The words “Key Club” (this is optional, but preferred)

Contribute to DCON 2014

Page 14: Division 38 July Newsletter

If you decided you are interested, please either Facebook

message Cleo Tsang, or email me at

[email protected] so you can receive the theme

and additional details!

Here are some examples of last year’s designs:

Also needed is someone to design our DCON t-shirts and pins.

Please limit the t-shirt design to only 2 colors. The t-shirt design

and pin design don’t have to be the same. The t-shirt and pin

should include the following:

The phrase “Division 38”

The words “Pacific Northwest” or “PNW”

The words “Key Club”

A picture of our mascot (a star) incorporated into the

theme (Level Up into Service)

If you or someone you know is interested in designing our

Divisional t-shirt and/or pin, please have them email me

([email protected]). We will vote for our final design

during a future DCM.

Shining Stars!

In addition to the monthly S.T.A.R. Award, the following clubs also stood out from the rest!

Olympia High School

A huge thank you to Olympia High School Key Club members Mariah Fore and Giselle Mulato for organizing this year’s Relay for Life. These two co-captains attended all the captain meetings and kept communication between the Olympia Kiwanis Club to ensure that they had all the supplies to make the event a success. They also were a major force in fundraising before the event and during the event. These two sold key chains that represented all the different types of cancers throughout the night. Also, people could take pictures with a stuffed bear and moose for only $1. The $50 raised during the event was added to the $1,500 raised before the event. I couldn’t have asked for any better captains to help organize our divisional team. Thank you for all your hard work!
