President’s Welcome

Welcome to San Francisco! The Convention is finally upon us and we have an exciting program scheduled. As you can see, the days are jam-packed with great material between posters and papers, collaborative symposia, and hospitality suite over-flow sessions. The Society is hosting two socials and promoting multiple mentoring moments. If the Division programing is enough to get you excited, then I encourage you to come out and enjoy what San Francisco has to offer: amazing diversity in restaurants for the foodies, tremendous natural beauty for the biologists, the potential for seismic activity for the geologists, and fun people-watching for everyone else. I look forward to seeing you all there! Mark Mark A. Staal, PhD, ABPP President, Society for Military Psychology Division 19, American Psychological Association

Division 19 Guide to San Francisco Getting Around in San Francisco San Francisco is a very accessible city, with many convenient and affordable transportation options to choose from including Muni buses, light rail Metro trains, historic streetcars and iconic cable cars, which cover all corners of the city. Visit the San Francisco Metropolitan Transit Authority at https://www.sfmta.com/ If you are staying for more than one day, Visitor Passports and CityPass are useful as they provide unlimited rides on Muni, Muni Metro, historic streetcars and cable cars for three consecutive days. There are multiple locations throughout the city where you may purchase tickets and day passes, including the San Francisco Travel Visitor Information Center, where the VIC staff and volunteers curate the San Francisco experience, providing one-on-one interaction with visitors from around the world. Find the VIC at the Powell and Market cable car turnaround at 900 Market St.

• 1-Day Visitor Passport: $21

• 3-Day Visitor Passport: $32

Taxis and ride-sharing mobile applications such as Lyft and Uber are also available in San Francisco. Getting to Downtown from the San Francisco Airport (SFO) The BART rapid rail is a fast and inexpensive way to get from SFO Airport to San Francisco. After picking up your luggage, look for signs for AirTrain, the free tram service. Take either the Red or Blue AirTrain line to the Garage G and BART stop in the International Terminal. Hop on the BART train going towards Pittsburg/Baypoint, signified by the yellow line on the BART map. BART costs are associated with how far you travel; the greater the distance, the higher the fare. A round-trip BART fare from SFO to downtown San Francisco is $17.90 ($8.95 one-way). Buy your ticket, then pass through the gates by slipping your ticket through the turnstyle. You'll have to scan your ticket again when you arrive at your destination. Local Attractions San Francisco has a little bit of everything in just 49 square miles of city! It is easy to spend weeks in San Francisco and still not experience everything the city has to offer. Here is a suggested list of the top things to do in San Francisco, according to the San Francisco Travel Association:

1. Walk Over the Golden Gate Bridge The Golden Gate Bridge, the most famous bridge in the world, manages to impress even the most experienced travelers with its stunning 1.7-mile span.

2. Ride a Cable Car Cable cars have been transporting people around San Francisco since the late 19th century. Tickets ($7) may be purchased at the cable car turnarounds at the ends of each route. Each one -way ride will provide spectacular views of the city’s celebrated hills as well as exhilarating transportation.

3. Visit the Rock Alcatraz, the notorious former prison, is located on an island of the same name in the middle of San Francisco Bay. To reach the island, take an Alcatraz Cruises ferry from Pier 33. Advance reservations are recommended, 415-981-ROCK (7625). www.alcatrazcruises.com

4. See the Sea Lions Fisherman’s Wharf is also home to PIER 39, a festive waterfront marketplace that is one of the city’s most popular attractions. A community of California sea lions has taken up residence on the floats in the PIER 39 Marina and visitors line the nearby railing to watch their antics. From there it is a short walk to the San Francisco Dungeon and Madame Tussauds, Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, historic Boudin Bakery, and multiple favorite food options, including famous crab vendors selling walk-away crab and shrimp cocktails.

5. Shop in Union Square Union Square is the place for serious shoppers. Major department stores and the most exclusive designer boutiques line streets like Post, Sutter, Geary, Grant, Stockton and Powell. The Westfield San Francisco Shopping Centre houses the largest Bloomingdale's outside of New York and the second largest Nordstrom in the U.S.

6. Explore North Beach North Beach, the city’s Italian quarter, isn’t a beach at all. It’s a neighborhood of romantic European-style sidewalk cafes, restaurants and shops centered near Washington Square along Columbus and Grant avenues. The beautiful Church of Saints Peter and Paul is a beloved landmark.

7. Coit Tower atop Telegraph Hill offers a splendid vantage point for photos of the bridges and the Bay. Inside the tower, floor-to-ceiling murals painted in the 1930s depict scenes of early San Francisco.

8. Walk Through the Oldest Chinatown The entrance to Chinatown at Grant Avenue and Bush Street is called the "Dragon's Gate." Inside are 24 blocks of hustle and bustle, most of it taking place along Grant Avenue, the oldest street in San Francisco.
