THE PASTOR’S WEEKLY LETTER – April 23, 2017

~ Divine Mercy Sunday ~

Easter…continued

Today is the Octave Day of Easter, the Eight Day of our celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection. The

Easter Season continued until the Fiftieth Day, Pentecost. My prayer for our parish during this time is

that we keep up the momentum! Over the past two weeks many people came to celebrate the Eucha-

rist and participate in the other liturgical rites of Holy Week. Many received the mercy of God in the

Sacrament of Reconciliation on Reconciliation Monday and during the rest of Holy Week and into the

Octave of Easter. Perhaps you took up the challenge of Bishop Barres and invited someone back.

Perhaps you are here today at the invitation of someone. Just because we are already eight days into

the Easter Season doesn’t mean we should stop inviting people to come experience the love of Christ

in the Church. We shouldn’t stop going to confession. We need not stop those extra times of prayer

or extra charitable works we started in Lent. During this Easter Season of Fifty Days let’s continue

the momentum and build on the progress we have made!

Last weekend we rejoiced in the baptism of the elect of our parish and we all renewed our own baptis-

mal promises. Today we welcome back those who were baptized in our parish over the previous year.

We pray for the Holy Spirit to guide each and every one of us in our vocation so that we may live out

our full potential as members of the Body of Christ.

Save the Date

Please note some important dates for the rest of the Easter Season. On Saturday May 6th, Saint Mar-

tha Parish will host our Parish Encuentro, building on the 5 sessions that have concluded this past

week. This is an all-day event that will conclude with the 5pm Mass, which will be bi-lingual and cel-

ebrated by Bishop Nelson Perez, our auxiliary bishop and one of the national leaders of the V Encuen-

tro.

Bishop Perez will return to our parish on Saturday, June 3 to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation

with our 8th graders at the 5pm Mass. The following day, Pentecost Sunday, we will hold our annual

Volunteer Thank You Event. More information on that will come in the fol-

lowing weeks.

THE PASTOR’S WEEKLY LETTER – April 23, 2017

nuestras propias promesas bautismales.

FIVE HUNDRED YEARS OF MISUNDERSTANDING

By Fr. Ron Rolheiser—Week of April 16, 2017

The heart has its reasons, says Pascal, and sometimes those reasons have a long history.

Recently I signed a card for a friend, a devout Baptist, who was raised to have a suspicion of Roman Catholics. It’s

something he still struggles with; but, don’t we all! History eventually infects our DNA. Who of us is entirely free from

suspicion of what’s religiously different from us? And what’s the cure? Personal contact, friendship, and theological dia-

logue with those of other denominations and other faiths does help open our minds and hearts, but the fruit of centuries

of bitter misunderstanding doesn’t disappear so easily, especially when it’s institutionally entrenched and nurtured as a

prophetic protection of God and truth. And so in regards to Christians of other denominations there remains in most of us

an emotional dis-ease, an inability to see the other fully as one of our own.

And so in signing this card for my separated Christian friend, I wrote: “To a fellow Christian, a brother in the Body of

Christ, a good friend, from whom I’m separated by 500 years of misunderstanding.”

Five hundred years of misunderstanding, of separation, of suspicion, of defensiveness, that’s not something that’s easily

overcome, especially when at its core there sit issues about God, truth, and religion. Granted, there has been much posi-

tive progress made in the past fifty years and many of the original, more-blatant misunderstandings have been overcome.

But the effects of the historical break with Christianity and the reaction to it are present today and are still seen every-

where, from high church offices, to debates within the academy of theology, to suspicions inside the popular mind.

Sad how we’ve focused so much on our differences, when at the center, at the heart, we share the same essential faith,

the same essential beliefs, the same basic moral codes, the same Scriptures, the same belief in afterlife, and the same

fundamental tenet that intimacy with Jesus Christ is the aim of our faith. As well, not insignificantly, today we also share

the same prejudices and biases against us, whether these come from fundamentalists within other religions or whether

these come from over-zealous, over-secularized, post-Christians within our own society. To someone looking at us from

the outside we, all the different Christian denominations, look like a monolith, one faith, one church, a single religion,

our differences far overshadowed by our commonality. Sadly we tend not to see ourselves like this from within, where

our differences, more often than not based upon a misunderstanding, are seen to dwarf our common discipleship.

Yet, the Epistle to the Ephesians tells us that, as Christians, we share one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God who

is Father of all of us. At its most essential level, that’s true of all of us as Christians, despite our denominational differ-

ences. We are one at our core.

Granted, there are some real differences among us, mostly though in terms of how we understand certain aspects of the

church and certain issues within morality, rather than on how we understand the deeper truths about the nature of God,

the divinity of Christ, the gift of God’s Word, the gift of the Eucharist, and the inalienable dignity and destiny of all hu-

man beings. Within the hierarchy of truth this essential core is what’s most important, and on this essential core we es-

sentially agree. That’s the real basis of our common discipleship.

Ecclesially, the issues that divide us focus mostly on church authority, on ordination to ministry, on whether to empha-

size word or sacrament, on how to understand the presence of Christ in the Eucharist, on the number of sacraments, on

the place of sacramentals and devotions within discipleship, and on how scripture and tradition interplay with each other.

In terms of moral issues, the issues that divide us are also the “red button” issues within our society as a whole: abor-

tion, gay marriage, birth control, and the place of social justice within discipleship. But, even on these, there’s more

commonality than difference among the churches.

Moreover, today, the differences on how we understand many of the ecclesial and moral issues that divide us are more

temperamental than denominational, that is, they tend to be more a question of one’s theology than of one’s denomina-

tional affiliation. Granted, classical denominational theology still plays in, but the divisions today regarding how we see

certain ecclesial and moral issues, be that ordination, gay marriage, abortion, or social justice, are less a tension between

Roman Catholics and Protestants (and Evangelicals) than they are between those who lean temperamentally and theolog-

ically in one direction rather than the other. It’s perhaps too simplistic to draw this up in terms of liberal versus conserva-

tive, but this much at least is true, the fault-line on these issues today is becoming less and less denominational.

Living the Mystery of Divine Mercy

Every year in celebrating Easter we relive the experience of the first disciples of Jesus, the experience of the

encounter with him Risen: the Gospel of John tells that they saw him appear in their midst in the Upper Room

on the evening of the very day of the Resurrection, the first day of the week, and subsequently eight days later

(Jn 20:19, 26). That day, later called the Lord’s Day, was the day of the assembly of the Christian community

which gathered for its own devotion, that is, to the Eucharist, a new form of worship which from the outset

differed from the Judaic worship of the Sabbath. Indeed, the celebration of the Lord’s Day is a very strong

proof of Christ’s Resurrection, for only an extraordinary and overwhelming event could have induced the first

Christians to begin a form of worship that differed with regard to the Jewish Sabbath.

Then, as today, Christian worship is not only a commemoration of past events nor even a specific, inner mysti-

cal experience; rather, it is essentially an encounter with the Risen Lord who lives in the dimension of God

beyond time and space, and yet becomes really present amidst the community, speaks to us in the Sacred

Scriptures and breaks the bread of eternal life for us.

It is through these signs that we relive what the disciples experienced, that is, the event of seeing Jesus and at

the same time of not recognizing him; of touching his body, a real body and yet free from earthly bonds.

What the Gospel says is very important: namely, that Jesus, in his two appearances to the Apostles gathered in

the Upper Room, repeats several times the greeting: Peace be with you (Jn 20:19, 21, 26). Here, the traditional

greeting with which people wish one another shalom, peace, becomes something new: it becomes the gift of

the peace that Jesus alone can give because it is the fruit of the love of God which led him to die on the cross,

to pour out all his Blood, as a meek and humble lamb full of grace and truth (Jn 1:14).

For this reason Blessed John Paul II chose to call this Sunday after Easter Divine Mercy, with a very specific

image: that of Jesus’ pierced side from which blood and water flowed, according to the account of an eyewit-

ness, the Apostle John (cf. Jn 19:34-37). However Jesus is now Risen and the Paschal sacraments of baptism

and the Eucharist flow from him, who is alive: those who receive them with faith receive the gift of eternal

life.

Dear brothers and sisters, let us accept the gift of peace which the Risen Jesus offers us: let us allow our hearts

to be filled with his mercy! In this way, with the power of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit who raised Christ from

the dead, we too can bring the Easter gifts to others. May Mary most holy obtain this for us.

A QUOTE FROM POPE FRANCIS:

"Mercy restores everything; it restores dignity to each person. This is why effusive gratitude is the proper response: we

have to go the party, to put on our best clothes, to cast off the rancour of the elder brother, to rejoice and give thanks.

Only in this way, participating fully in such rejoicing, is it possible to think straight, to ask for forgiveness, and see

more clearly how to make up for the evil we have committed. It would be good for us to ask ourselves: after going to

confession, do I rejoice? And when I give alms, do I give time to the person who receives them to express their grati-

tude, do I celebrate the smile and the blessings that the poor offer, or do I continue on in haste with my own affairs after

tossing in a coin?"

Vocation Prayer

Merciful Father, you sent your Son into the world to free us from the power of sin and evil. Grant that, through the intercession of

the Virgin Mary, our Mother of Mercy, many young men will respond to your call to give of themselves in imitation of Christ the Redeemer. Fill them with the light of your Holy Spirit that they may renounce the power of the world, proclaim truth and freedom, and bring consolation and relief to oppressed Chris-tians. Bless our family of Mercy with numerous holy priests and brothers who will offer our world the testimony of your faith and love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN

Bulletin Reflection

Jesus meets the need of each disciple. To the fearful He

speaks words of peace. To doubting Thomas, He provides

the tangible proof of His resurrection. What do I need to

become His disciple? What do I have to share that might

meet someone else’s need?

Living Stewardship

We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish

who seek to “unwrap” their gifts from God, recognizing

these unique and special gifts help make them who they

are and who they are called to be.

THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to my medical fund thus far. I found out my initial campaign (not run by me) has been shut down for an unknown reason. The first campaign helped cover my household bills from missed work, as well as smaller hospital bills. This new campaign is set up in hopes of paying back some of the $90k+ I owe as of now. (This is only one of the two surgeries I have had so far.) It is very possible I will have to claim bankruptcy if I can-not make a good dent. That is a very frightening thought as a single parent. For those of you who either have donated already, or cannot afford to, please do not feel obligated. I ask for prayers for myself and for my family. It has been a very rough couple of months. The new link is www.gofundme.com/lishanson. You can also leave donations at the Parish Center. Every little bit helps, and has helped. God bless and thank you so much. St. Martha’s has been incredible with your generosity.

more than ever hold me by

Your Power, that I may not offend You, but daily increase in Your Love.

Give me strength to work in Your Service till the last day of my life.

Help me to ever have an increasing dread of venial sin,

or whatever would cause the

slightest withdrawal of Your Love; all day long,

and at night keep me close to Your Heart; and should I die, ere the morning breaks,

may I go rejoicing

in that vision of Your entrancing beauty, never to be separated from You. Amen.
