Small Business Growth & Sustainability Is Essential

Conventional wisdom among economists and economic experts is that small business is the back-bone of modern leading economies around the world, and their impact on economic success is undeniable. The newly appointed SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet recently pointed out in a recent AARP Voices blog article, “The daunting chore of growing and strengthening minority-owned businesses and entrepreneurship is challenging, yet Hispanics start businesses at three times the national average and contribute over $468 billion to the American economy.” According to the latest statistics released by by the SBA and U.S. Census Bureau, small U.S. firms:

• Represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms.• Employ about half of all private sector employees.• Pay nearly 45 percent of total U.S. private payroll.• Have generated 60 to 80 percent of net new jobs annually over the last decade.• Create more than half of nonfarm private gross domestic product (GDP).• Hire 40 percent of high tech workers (such as scientists, engineers).• Are 52 percent home-based and 2 percent franchises.• Made up 97.3 percent of all identified exporters.• Produce 13 times more patents per employee than large patenting firms.• Hispanics and Latinos, are 17% of the U.S. population, and own 8.3% of businesses.• African Americans at 13% of the U.S. population and own 7.1% of businesses.

African American and Hispanic Consumer Markets’ Growing Influence

The robust growth in the size and impact of consumer spending in the African American and Hispanic markets is undeniable. Together,African-Americans (9%) and Hispanics (11.3%) combined to account for one-fiph of national discretionary spending during the Fall of 2013, according to new data from Experian Marketing Services’s Fall 2013 NaKonal Consumer Study, that figure represents a substantial gain from recent years, as they had not exceeded a combined 18% of the estimate during either of the 3 prior years of Fall surveys. The total discretionary spending estimate for Fall 2013 was roughly $1.5 trillion. Our mission is to grow these statistics and strengthen these business and consumer communities.
