The Michelin Guide returned to Los Angeles County for the first time in a decade and announced the company’s first ever all-Cali-fornia restaurant guide.

While some of Los Angeles’ most popular restaurants and much of the San Gabriel Valley failed to make the list, Temple City’s Bis-tro Na’s restaurant was awarded a Michelin star.

There were no three star restaurants anywhere in California. Only two Orange County restaurants were awarded stars and none from Santa Barbara County.

Michelin’s international director Gwendal Poullennec praised California’s culinary diversity and agricultural bounty. “Our in-spectors have been impressed with the way these chefs have been able to take local ingredients and use them in their own unique ways.”

The Michelin Guide’s star system is recognized as a culinary status symbol accolade for many of the world’s most illustrious restaurants.

Starred restaurants are ranked one through three. Michelin’s re-turn to the Los Angeles Coun-ty area was made possible by financial support from the Vis-it California tourism bureau and covers restaurants across the entire state.

Bistro Na’s inclusion was noteworthy due to the fact that despite the abundance of amazing dining experienc-es across the 626, the Temple City Chamber of Commerce

The Relay For Life movement is American Cancer Society’s signature fundraiser dedicat-ed to helping communities attack cancer.

From team members to volunteers, every-one wants to remember those they’ve lost, help those affected today, and give the Temple City community a home team advantage against cancer. Through funds donated, time given, or awareness raised, Temple Citians are teaming up to make a difference.

Each year the fun and inspirational event demonstrates that when a community rallies together, it can accomplish anything.

“We are thrilled that one of our members was awarded one of the highest honors in the industry,” said Temple City Chamber of Commerce President Peter Choi.

“Bistro Na’s honor underscores what many foodies know about din-ing in Temple City, that our wide va-riety of delicious options has made our city a foodie destination.” Choi noted that when Bistro Na’s first opened, the Chamber of Commerce

advocated for the restaurant to be allowed to create an architecturally significant entrance at its location in the Camellia Square shopping cen-ter.

“From new eateries like The Dive (gumbo, jambalaya and seafood) to Korean barbecue at Kang Ho Dong Baek Jeong to a good old fashioned burger at The Hat, Temple City of-fers options for everything from a casual lunch to the fanciest celebra-tion or special occasion.”

Maybe you’re a lit-tle like me at the mere thought of being in the

front of a classroom. Yes-terday, I learned, like with so many other self-con-

structed fears, the experi-ence can be awesome. And several of my mentors

have shared that the stuff that scares you most likely is exactly what you should be doing.

I paid a trip to my under-grad alma ma-ter, California State Universi-ty, Los Angeles (CSULA) and an old home, the Biological Sciences build-

ing.Impactful

Internships leader Da-vid Rayudu invited me to speak to some gifted high school students re-garding their possible fu-ture in health

sciences.

I’ll confess, I loved the group in room 244. En-gaging with bright, inter-ested, motivated, smiling young people might’ve been the boat Ponce de Leon missed. Most of the students lived in the San Gabriel Valley; two of them were students at my high school alma mater Mark Keppel High School in Alhambra.

We talked about choos-ing one’s attitude, having a passion for a career, look-ing for mentors, and being open-minded. I shared the joy of being part of a community and looking for opportunities to be generous and empathetic.

The students were or-ganized in teams develop-ing a scientific report to be presented on gradua-tion day … and we agreed collaboration, recogni-tion, and fun could gen-erate some serious magic. I also shared about the 20

years it took me to begin to learn the basics of my advice.

On graduation day, as each student received a certificate of completion, the young men and wom-en shared mission state-ments. It was blazing hot outside, but it was warm

inside a familiar lecture hall.

A mentor once shared teaching and sharing is learning. My suggestion to a classroom of some of the brightest was: Never stop being curious … and never stop giving.

A trip to bountiful: never stop being curious, never stop giving

In my practice, I encounter many clients who had estate planning documents drafted some 15-20 years ago and have not looked at them since.

The issue with many of these older estate plans is that they are non-compliant with privacy rules established by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). As a result, their successor trustees, executors, and financial and healthcare agents often run into problems when attempting to communicate with insurers and healthcare providers on behalf of the person who executed the documents.

As of April 14, 2003, healthcare providers and other covered entities must com-ply with the standards imposed by the HIPAA Privacy Rule, which placed strict restrictions on the disclosure of protected health in-formation (PHI) without the pa-tient’s express permission.

While these privacy protec-tions are a positive thing for pa-tient confidentiality, they can make it difficult for a patient’s representatives to make informed healthcare decisions on his or her behalf when the patient is no lon-

ger able to make such decisions. Without a properly executed authorization,

HIPAA may preclude your healthcare providers and insurers from disclosing protected health in-formation to your representatives.

How will a loved one make an informed health-care decision for you, if he or she does not have access to your health records?

If your current estate plan is more than 10 years old, it is likely that your estate is not HIPAA compliant. To ensure that your documents are in compliance with new laws, you should speak to an estate planning attorney about updating your estate plan to include HIPAA authorization. Tony offers free consultations for clients interested in draft-ing estate planning documents or reviewing existing estate plans. Before you head out for your favorite summer ac-tivity, be safe in the sum-mer sun with these six tips from the HealthCare Part-ners-Temple City clinic.

1. Wear sunscreen dai-ly and reapply every two hours when outside.

2. Did you know your body is composed of 65 percent water? Drink plenty of water to stay hy-drated. Bring a reusable water bottle with you and fill up at any water foun-tain nearby.

3. Protect yourself by wearing a hat, shirt and sunglasses. Anyone can be at risk for heat-related illnesses, especially when you’re having fun in the pool or at the beach. Be sure to limit your time in the sun to between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

4. Mosquitoes can cause a number of illness-es like West Nile Virus and Zika Virus. Wear bug spray and cover exposed skin.

5. Monitor your skin regularly for any changes.

6. Schedule an annual skin cancer screening with your primary care provid-er or dermatologist. Af-terwards, be sure to check yourself regularly. When melanoma is detected before it spreads, it has a higher cure rate.HealthCare Partners is located at 2208, 9810 E. Las Tunas Drive, Temple City, CA 91780. If you have a sum-mer house at the Cal-ifornia beaches, you may be reading this article from over there.

Decorating a beach house is easier than decorating your prima-ry house in the city.

Beach house dec-oration is often about simplicity.

Most decorating ideas are inspired by the beach look and items found around there. The main goal is enjoying the beach with loved ones while

looking at the stars on clear nights.

Indoor/outdoor fire-places are a great idea for beach homes due to chilly nights.

They bring people to-gether as well and are per-fect for late night conver-

sation.

To make the house airy and spacious, use neutral colors such as white, beige, cream, or light brown and use coastal-style furniture that resembles the sur-roundings which match the seaside theme.

When it comes the flooring, consider us-ing materials that resist dust, sand, and even hu-midity.

Cleaning the floor regularly is a daily rou-tine, so tile is a great choice.

Create ambiance by building a wood deck with outdoor wood fur-niture with white cush-ions, sand color umbrel-las, outdoor fire pit and candles: perfect for in-viting your friends and family members over to enjoy it.

Personally, I like Greek-inspired home de-cor  which combine pat-tern, texture and color that creates a cozy and restful space.

To make the house airy and spacious, use neutral colors such as white, beige, cream or light brown and use coastal-style furniture that resembles the surroundings.

This style matches the beach due to it use of natural stone, white walls, blue doors and windows which are all low-cost features.

Add some color and warmth to the flooring with a Turk-ish or Persian rug.

If you travel along the Southern Cali-fornia beach cities, you will see the best examples of contem-porary Californian architecture.

A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their homes and become disillusioned and - worse – financially disadvantaged when they put their homes on the market. As this report uncovers, most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled “The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar.”To order a FREE Special Report, call toll-free 1-888-300-4632 and enter 3000. Temple City Patriotic News

By Monique Weiland Summer is in full swing

and the Blue Star Ban-ner Program is too. And nothing says summer in Temple City like the Con-certs in the Park.

If you came to the park for the music, come to the Blue Star booth where they serve a sweet and salty combo to tempt any taste bud: root beer floats, cheese nachos with or without chili, and sundaes served with your choice of syrup, strawberries, bananas, nuts, and whip cream.

If you don’t need a sip, snack, or something sweet, there are patriotic items to wear, watch, or display on sale. The Blue

Enjoy the music and support the Blue Star Banner ProgramStar family will give you a big patriotic thank you be-cause your purchases con-tribute to the care pack-ages sent to Temple City’s active military personnel wherever they are serving.

In fact, a member of the Air Force is in for a big surprise.

Someone let Blue Star Banner Director Sharon Johnson know his birth-day.

He will be receiving a special care package full of notes and drawings with birthday wishes from fellow citizens created at Concerts in the Park along with a special homemade birthday cake cookie from Johnson.

The Blue Star Program

hosted its semi-annual Recognition Dinner in June.

Thank you letters have been sent out to the key-note speaker, singer, and local businesses who helped sponsor the din-ner.

They will receive pic-tures of the evening along with a copy of the article from Temple City Cham-ber’s newsletter.

The Temple City Blue Star Banner program con-tinues to thrive thanks to their supporters and vol-unteers.

They could not do it without you.

The program serves the individuals who fearlessly

protect our freedoms. It is a way to let them know we care and that they are not forgotten.

For any questions regarding the Blue Star Banner Program, contact Johnson at 626-285-5852.

Following a major disaster, po-lice, fire and medical professionals may not be able to fully meet the demand.

People will have to rely on each other to meet the immediate life-saving and life sustaining needs, particularly in isolated neighbor-hoods that may be cut off from the main roads for a period of time.

The CERT program provides private citizens with basic skills that will enable them to handle their own needs and then to re-spond to their community’s needs in the aftermath of a disaster. A total of 25+ hours of instruction is provided.*

Pet of the Month

Gus is a 5-year-old Labrador and Jack Russell terrier mix weighing about 54 pounds. Gus loves walking, jogging, fetching tennis balls, cuddling in laps, offering up his belly, and being a champion toy squeaker. See him in action here - https://youtu.be/iqlcMzrIOkw. Gus is great on a leash and well behaved during his baths (probably because he enjoys playing with water so he would be your best bud in the pool in the hot California summers).

Since not much else is known about his past, Gus may be best suited to being an only dog and with older children. His adoption fee is $145, which includes spay surgery, a microchip, first vaccinations and a free wellness check-up at a participating veterinarian. Visit the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, at 851 E. Grand Ave., San Gabriel, CA 91776.

Visit www.sgvhumane.org for information and photos of all the pets. The shelter also provides animal control and licensing services to Temple City and is the friendly, local choice for low cost spay/neuter and vaccination services for your pet.

Gus best suited to be single dog with older children
