Windkills younggirl
JAMEY THOMAS
Please tell me Melanie is not
dead, everybody says she is, but
I know shes not.
Thesewere thewordsof Somerset
West resident Sibel Abaday, whose
nine-year-old daughter, Melanie
Abaday, died when a branch from
atree fell onherwhile shewaswalk-
ing home in a strong wind.
The incident took place just after
14:00 in Reitz Street, Somerset West
on Friday.
According to Sibel, she and her
eldest daughter, Myriam (17), had
just fetched Melanie from school.
Myriam was walking on the side-
walk, with Melanie right behind
her.
While on our way home, which
is just around the corner, we were
discussing theartworkMelaniehad
done at school. However, we heard
no response from Melanie, says a
traumatised Sibel, who has raised
her daughters as a single mother.
I asked Myriam, Wheres Mela-
nie? and when we turned around,
there she was lying underneath a
big branch.
Myriam says she recalls hearing
a creak and even feeling something
Sibel and Myriam Abaday minutes after the freak accident occurred. The
map (right) roughly indicates where the incident took place.

You were a good friend to all of

have known you. You were a
very good artist. We think Jesus
came and fetched you to draw

You will always be in our hearts.
We will miss you a lot.

I dont understand why the
branch hit her and not me. She was
right behind me, says Myriam,
deeply affected by the fact that she
has lost her sister.
The Abadays say they have been
walking home that way ever since
Melanie startedattendingSomerset

years ago. They never imagined
something so devastating could
happen to them.
According to Marilyn Durr, who

Sibel and Myriam describe
Melanie as their little prin-

about art.
She was very artistic. In
August, she was awarded a

According to Karlien van

with the demand for a R150 per
day minimum wage.

Expoorganisermissingwith themoney
NIKITA SYLVESTER
The alleged repeat fraud offend-
er, Colin Rall, is believed to have
madeoffwith thousandsof rands
after swindling numerous Hel-
derberg businesses.
The Helderberg Wheels and Out-
door Expo (HWO) 2012, which was
expected to take place this past
weekend, appears to have been a
front for the event organiser Rall to
con people out of money.
Numerous attempts by District-
Mail journalists and expo exhibi-
tors to contact Rall have all drawn
a blank.
On Thursday 29 November - the
day before the expo - a number of
exhibitors arrived at Charles Mor-
kel Stadium in Strand to start set-
ting up their stalls and displays.
They found an empty field, locked
gates and absolutely no sign of the
organiser.
The expo was advertised as a
weekend of fun and entertainment
for the whole family, as well as a
charity outreach. The programme
included items such as a car sound
show, braai champs competition,
remote control car races and a bik-
ers toy run. Mississippi Disco,
Akkedis, Jurie van Zyl and Tommy
Dell were some of the artists who
were scheduled to perform.
Riaan Botha from Speedy in
Strand said they paid the organiser
R2 000 for a stand.
We were looking for marketing
ideas for the year and subsequently
came across the HWO advertise-
ment in the newspaper, ex-
plains Botha.
We saw this as an excel-
lent opportunity to get some
exposure as we recently
took over the company and
business was not doing too
well. You want to trust peo-
ple, but things like this
make it very difficult. I am
truly disappointed and
heartbroken.
Raymond van der West-
huizen, new car sales manager at
Philwest Volkswagen, said they too
decided to participate in the expo.
Not only did they pay for a stall, but
they also sponsored some of the en-
tertainers who were scheduled to
perform. I became very concerned
when he (Colin Rall) phoned nearly
every day, insisting that the money
be paid. When running a big event
like that you need to use
some of your own fund-
ing, says Van der West-
huizen.
He estimates that the
motoring companies in-
volved spent between
R250 000 and R300 000 on
this non-event.
Other businesses were
alsoconnedoutofmoney.
Among them are Somer-
set Beverages, Helder-
bergSuzuki,Kelfords,WestvaalMo-
tors and Rola Toyota.
Mississippi Disco posted the fol-
lowing on their Facebook page on
Thursday 29 November:
Helderberg Wheels & Outdoor Ex-
po 2012. Neem kennis! Die expo is af!
Die man wat hierdie ding gerel het
was n groot fraud! As enige iemand
hom sien of van hom hoor, kontak
dadelik die polisie.
Charn Prins (19) was employed
by Rall to do the marketing for the
event, and says she too was de-
ceived.
According to Prins, she liaised
personally with most of the clients
while Rall only dealt with them via
telephone. She explains that she
was completely unaware of Ralls
fraud history and only realised it
when the businesses involved start-
ed calling her and asking why the
expo was not taking place.
I received hundreds of phone
calls from people threatening to
make a case against me if I did not
pay their money back.
One company in particular
phoned to tell me who Colin really
is and where I could read up about
him. I googled his name and was
completely shocked atwhat I found.
Colin left me to deal with all of
thisonmyown. I justwanteveryone
to know I only worked for him and
Iwascompletelyunawareofhishid-
den agenda, said Prins.
Strand police confirmed that so
far three cases were opened regard-
ing the expo.
Prins has also laid a charge
against her former employer.

The wife of alleged fraudster Colin

mous,hasdisputedallclaimsofher

Despite the fact that she too isun-
aware of his current whereabouts,
she believes that herhusband is in-
nocent.
Thursday morning (29 Novem-
ber)wasthe last timeIsaworspoke
to him. He just disappeared, she
told a reporter from DistrictMail.
She explained that when Rall
was released from Drakenstein
prison inMarch thisyearoncharg-
es of fraud he started his own busi-
ness, Big Box events.
When he came out of jail he
wanted to start over with a clean
slate and decided to host this
wheels and outdoor expo.
I cant think that people would
say its a scam. He was so excited
about it and made so much effort
for this event.
This can all have been sorted if
he just explained to the businesses
what the problem was, and then
maybe just postpone it.
According to Ralls wife all the
money he received from business-
es and sponsors which she said
was just over R100 000 was put
backintotheexpotocoverthecosts
of flyers, Radio Helderberg, para-
medics, petrol, Helderberg Rugby
Club etc. I just wish he would
come back so that I can talk some
sense into him.
Fraud history
Over thepast fewyearsPaarlPost
has reported on numerous fraud
cases related to former Welling
ton resident, Colin Rall.
In 2006 Rall and his wife were
arrested on various fraud charg
es ranging from Wellington to
Cape Town and even Gauteng.
Rall had already had previous
convictions for fraud and theft,
and at that time he was being in
vestigated
for fraud of
R200 000,
regarding
an invest
ment in their
promotions
company
ProRugby.
His wife
was re
leased on
R3 000 bail
while Rall
remained
behind
bars.
In 2007after his release, it ap
pears that Rall was once again
up to his old tricks.
Later that year he returned to
prison after defraudingmore un
suspecting victims shortly after
his release.
According to Ralls wife, the
last time he was released from
prison was in March this year.

Childrens party held despite scam
Although it appears that the organiser of the
Helderberg Wheels and Outdoor Expo has
made off with a large amount of sponsorsmon-
ey, he has not dampened the Christmas spirit.
Colin Rall has apparently conned several lo-
cal businesses into partic-
ipating in a wheels and
outdoor expo. The event
was scheduled for last
weekend.Aspartof theex-
po, a charity event in aid

er, according to the busi-
nesses involved every-
thing turned out to be a
scam.
Charn Prins who
worked for Rall says she
was also mislead by him
and that a Christmas par-
ty for 25 childrenwasorig-
inally planned. She said
all the sponsors who were also exhibitors
were approached tomake the party a reality
and either donated gifts or sponsored between
R100 and R200 towards gifts for each child.
The exhibitors who donated money were
Westvaal (R2 000), Rola Toyota (R500) and Bat-
tery Clinic (R200). Unfortunately, this money
was also paid into Ralls bank account and in-
cludes the amount with which he is believed
to have disappeared, said Charn.
Luckily, all was not lost, as exhibitors such
as, Alpha Dive Centre, 4x4 Mega World, WC
Wheels, Incredible Fun, AccessAuto, Fiat Hel-
derberg,Winelands4x4,Toyota,Honda,Merce-
dez Benz, Speedy and Pierre
Volschenk, donated gifts.

ty at the Charles Morkel Sta-
dium on Saturday. A festive

drinks were supplied by Hel-

Their day was further
brightened up when well-
known TV personality Diet-

showed up for the party.
Dieter would have been the Master of Cere-
monies at the expo. He says his manager in-
formed him about the expo being cancelled.
For the childrens sake he still attended the

can take advantage of good hearted people, he
said.

With30 000 lightbulbsimport-
ed and painted in hundreds of
shades and almost 100 motifs,
each a unique design, he and
his teamat themunicipalitys
electricity department spread
Christmas cheer through the
streets. The Christmas lights
in Somerset West were first
put up fifty years ago, but Pie-
ters took over the job in 1982.
We used to start preparing
for Christmas just after East-
er, says Pieters.
Each light was designed and made by
Pieters team and each motif had to be at
least 2,5 metres high.
Eachyearwehadsomethingdifferent.
He remembers one year they created a gi-
ant golfer hitting a ball, to celebrate the
World Cup of Golf at Erinvale.
Every motif holds a story for Pieters,
such as the whale and dolphin lights
which were designed by his daughter,
Tania. And the mother goose motif only
has one leg, because she is based on the
goose that came to theHelderbergNature
Reserve every year to breed, and her leg
was bitten off by a jackal.
Pieters had to give up his lights in 2004
as shortly after his last switch-on, he had
a heart attackwhich forced him to retire.
The City of Cape Town has since cen-
tralised the electricity depart-
ment, and from 2006 the lights
havebeen installed byElectricity
Services based in Ndabeni, near
Cape Town.
To Pieters, some of the magic
hasgoneoutofChristmas.When
you look at what they put up
now . . says Pieters sadly. He
used to receive wide acclaim for
his work. Engineers from all
over the country visited our
lights. Even Cape Towns lights
werent better than Somerset
West. Pieters even received a letter from
an American engineer saying that on the
small scalehewasworkingon, theChrist-
mas lights in Somerset West were better
than Disney Land.
You feel like youve achieved some-
thing. But to see the kiddies faces that
night . . .Thatswhoyoumadeit for. Itwas
the highlight every year.
The 50th Festival of the Lights takes
placeon6Decemberat18:30inMainRoad.

To JeanParker: moderndance teaching is just not the same
Hats off to Jean Parker, the mod-
ern dance teacher and choreogra-
pher of 20 years back.
She taught my children the art
of dance and staged the most mag-
nificent of shows. I have just been
to my granddaughters first show,
and all I can say is Jean you were
a cut above. Its a pity these little

what you did for all the dancers
that passed through your studio.
Much love.

Hy het nie net die gemeenskap

knou gegee.
Al die klubs wat op die Van Rie-

Urgentappeal to thepowers thatbe to cleanup theStrand
In desperation we are writing to
theDistrictMail in the hopes of re-
sults, as all appeals to the authori-
ties have amounted to nothing in
the long term.
We runabusiness in the Strand,
not far from a (blue-roofed) house
in Pickle Street which a street
gang of tik-heads have taken
over.
We are faced dailywith the filth,
stench andmess, the noise and the
comings and goings of numerous
unsavoury characters. Not very
good for business and certainly
not safe for ourselves and others
who work and live in the vicinity.
That aside, the Strand is a re-
nowned holiday destination but
not for long, if such dens are al-
lowedtotakeroot.Theverynature
of their lifestyle and addictions
means theyare prone to crimeand
possibly violence.
Its quite shocking, with the
rates we pay, that we even have to
resort to this. Law-enforcement
foot patrols, for instance,would go
a long way to keeping a control on
such situations. We appeal to the
powers that be to please deal with
this matter urgently.
CLEAN UP THE STRAND!
Be careful inwhom
youplaceyour trust!
Several well-known businesses in
the Helderberg lost large sums of
money to an alleged con artist by the
name of Colin Rall last week.
The so-called scamsterwasposing
as an event organiser for the imagi-
nary Helderberg Wheels and Out-
door Expo. It was billed as a fun-
filled event for thewhole family and
was to take place lastweekend at the
Charles Morkel Stadium in the
Strand.
When the would-be exhibitors be-
gan arriving at the stadium to set up
their stalls on Friday, there was no-
body on the premises.
Manywell-meaningpeopleandor-
ganisations were affected by this
scam, and businesses owners who
lost money and have not yet laid a
charge of fraud against Rall at the
local police station are urged to do
so immediately.
Its difficult enough these days to
accept somebodys word at face
value, andwhen something like this
happens, it leaves onewith even less
faith in ones fellow-man.

WreldgonsoorKhoisanpizza
Cobus Germishuys,n inwoner
vandieStrand, hetdiewreldaan
die gons met sy biltong-pizza wat
hy die Khoisan-pizza gedoop het.
Cobus, n wynkundige by Mulder-
bosch, bekende wynlandgoed op die
Polkadraaipad by Stellenbosch, ver-
duidelik hoe hy die konsep bekend
gemaak het.
n Europese egpaar het onlangs by
diewynlandgoedbesoekafgelenhet
dit vreemd gevind het dat net pizzas
aan besoekers voorgesit word.
Cobus, wat n baie kreatiewemens
is, het ges hy was deel van die ver-
skuiwing van Damaras en Namas
van die Riemvasmaak-omgewing
NoordwesvanUpington,naNamibi
en die Oos-Kaap.
Daar het hulle self die deeg ge-
maak, dit met die hand platgedruk,
vuuronder nplat klip gemaakendie
deeg daarop gaar gemaak.
Dan het hulle wildsbiltong, wat
hulle self droog gemaak het, saam
met ander kruie van die veld op die
gaar deeg geplaas en dit so geet,
vertel hy.
Di gebruik het Cobus heelwat la-
ter ook in die Suid-Kaap byHerberts-
dale raakgeloop waar hulle dit die
Khoisan-broodjiegenoemhet.Hyhet
die konsep aan die Europese besoe-
kersverduidelikdatdiepizza-konsep
in sy oervorm sy oorspring inAfrika
het, maar dat dit deur die Italianers
vervolmaak is.
Die egpaar het die storie baie inte-
ressant gevind endie pizza ismet bil-
tong, advokadopeer, soet peper, vars
tiemie en laventel vir hulle voorbe-
rei. Di dis het hulle skynbaar s be-
indruk dat Cobus kort daarna daar-
van in die Opera-tydskrif gelees het.
As gevolg van die biltong-pizza is
Mulderboschonderdie top-tienbeste
eetplekke in Stellenbosch sewynlan-
de aangewys.
Sedertdien maak ons dit gereeld
en is ngroot trefferopdiepizza-spys-
kaart, meen Cobus.
Cobus is n boorling van die plaas

Hy is ook deur die Perskor-groep
vir sy positiewe bydrae tot bevorde-

hy as verslaggewer in toerisme by
verskeie publikasies gewerk.
