Dear fellow Marists and Friends,
Greetings to you all again!
The days go so fast that we are already beyond the middle of 2019. It is a reality and it is hard to take con-
trol of it. We just have to accept and follow the time as it is.
Recently through out the District, many things happened , in communities, in ministries, in families.
Many celebrations, workshops were part of these happenings. They are all part of the life experiences
that come and go. It is interesting to stop along the journey of life to think and reflect about what the
daily experiences can do to someone‟s life. The tremendous effect on the whole being.
Sometimes we take our daily experiences for granted. We don't make any sense of what we go through
during the day or during the week. If we are mindful of our daily experiences, we will be able to find
more meaning in life. We will be able to appreciate the gift that life gives us every day. Life is meant to be
lived out joyfully with respect and appreciation.
I remember when I finished my formation in the Philippines and start-
ed teaching at St Michel Technical School in Santo, Vanuatu; an old
French SMSM Sister was part of the Sisters community in the same
school. Every time we came across each other, the first thing she would
always say to me was; “the life is beautiful, you must live it joy-
fully and live it to the full”. I have always kept the words of that Sis-
ter as I journey on in my own life as a religious. She gave all her life to
serve the Church and the people in Vanuatu as a religious, and I believe,
that what kept her going was to appreciate the beauty of her life, to live it joyfully and to the full as a
SMSM Sister. Our life experiences is meant to be shared. And this particular Sister shared her life experi-
ences through the services that she brought to the people she lived with and served.
When we bring joy in someone‟s life, it means we are sharing with the person the gift of life that God
gives to us. God is life itself and every day he shares himself to us by waking us up and giving us new life.
His Son Jesus Christ confirmed that when he said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life”. As
Christians we are called to share our experience of God with others. The sharing of our experience of God
is not merely through material good or food, or through the support that we give to other. It is more than
that. It is about sharing our faith in God to others through the gospel virtue of simplicity, of fraternal liv-
ing and of piety.

Our sharing of faith to others enables us to see beyond problems and dif-
ferences that we have in our community, in our family or in our society.
Because Community, or Family or Society we live in are gift of the Spirit.
And so we are called to nurture this gift of life in the Spirit, and to encour-
age and support each other in order to make our communities, our fami-
lies or our society schools of faith for ourselves, for young people and for
all who hunger for God.
The first Christian community‟s experience of God was centered on love
and forgiveness, support and help, forgetfulness of self, openness to oth-
ers, and joy. As Christian we are called to model our life on this first Chris-
tian community and on the home of Nazareth in order to develop these at-
titudes that make our family spirit a reality. In this way, our style of relat-
ing to others and our experience of God becomes bread to be shared.
Recently I had the chance to celebrate the anniversary of two countries
who gain their independence from colonial governments. The Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. In both
countries, there is a sense of freedom and pride. People are very proud of who they are as citizens of the-
se countries regardless of the negative image of the political realities that each country is going through.
In both Independence anniversary celebrations, the people came together as one nation, to thank God for
all the blessings he bestows on their country and the people. And to celebrate together, to share the jour-
ney that they are going as people of that nation.
Yes our life journey as a nation or as a community or as individual is a journey of bringing God to reality
in our daily experiences. Each one is born with different God‟s given gifts and talents. All these gifts and
talents are meant to be used and put at the service of others. These gifts and talents are to be shared to
help build better lives. But unfortunately some of us possess these God‟s given gifts and talents and never
used them to support others who need help and support. In other words, those type of people who don‟t
use the gifts and talents that God has given them, are wasting life. They are not living fully and joyfully
the life that God has given them in this world.
As Marist who are called to live togeth-
er, it is difficult to live with such people
in community. It is difficult to live with
people who don‟t matter about how life
in community is, because they just don‟t
care about others. Their whole life is
centered on themselves and their own
world. What they are doing in life is for
their own satisfaction and their own
benefits. This type of attitudes in com-
munity living is very discouraging and can affect the good work that others are doing.
I believe that for such people or individual, there is a called to reflect deeply about their lives. And to ask
question like; what is God trying to tell me about my life? Or what is God trying to tell me about my atti-
tudes towards the life that I am living? Or is my life worthwhile to others whom I am living with?
Our life and experiences of God has to be like bread
to be shared among ourselves to nurture and give
life to those we live with and serve. It is one of our
calls as Christians or as Marists. We, Marists of
Champagnat, just celebrate with the Church one of
our Patronal Feasts of the Institute, the “Assumption
of the Blessed Virgin Mary”. This import feast of our
Good Mother is a reminder for us, to give thanks to God for all the blessings and won-
ders in our lives. And also to share those blessings and wonders to others, as Mary did
to her cousin Elizabeth.
In that way, our experience of God becomes bread to be shared. Let us always remem-
ber to pray for one another.

Salutations à tous!
Les jours passent si vite que nous sommes déjà au-delà de la mi-2019. C'est une réalité et il est dif-
ficile d'en prendre contrôle. Nous devons juste accepter et suivre le temps tel qu'il est.
Récemment dans le district, beaucoup de choses se sont passées dans les communautés, dans les
ministères, dans les familles . De nombreuses célébrations, des seminaires faisaient partie de ces
evenements. Ils font tous partie des expériences de vie qui vont et viennent. Il est intéressant de
s‟arrêter dans le parcours de la vie pour réfléchir à ce que les expériences quotidiennes peuvent faire
dans la vie de quelqu'un. L'effet énorme sur tout l'être.
Parfois, nous prenons nos expériences quotidiennes pour acquises. Nous n'avons aucune idée de ce
que nous vivons pendant la journée ou la semaine. Si nous sommes conscients de nos expériences
quotidiennes, nous pourrons trouver plus de sens dans la vie. Nous pourrons apprécier le cadeau que
la vie nous offre chaque jour. La vie doit être vécue dans la joie,
avec respect et gratitude.
Je me souviens avoir terminé ma formation aux Philippines et
commencé à enseigner au College Technique de St Michel a
Santo, au Vanuatu; une ancienne sœur SMSM française faisait
partie de la communauté des sœurs dans la même école.
Chaque fois que nous nous rencontrions, la première chose
qu'elle me disait toujours était: «La vie est belle, il faut la
vivre joyeusement et la vivre pleinement». J'ai toujours
gardé les paroles de cette sœur au long de mon cheminement
dans ma vie de religieuse. Elle a consacré toute sa vie au ser-
vice de l'Église et des habitants de Vanuatu en tant que religieuse et je crois que ce qui l'a poussée à
continuer, c'est d'apprécier la beauté de sa vie, de la vivre pleinement dans la joie en tant que sœur
SMSM. Nos expériences de vie sont destinées à être partagées. Et cette sœur a partagé ses expérienc-
es de vie à travers les services qu'elle a rendus aux personnes avec lesquelles elle a vécu et servi.
Lorsque nous apportons de la joie dans la vie de quelqu'un, cela signifie que nous partageons avec
cette personne le don de la vie que Dieu nous a donné. Dieu est la vie même et chaque jour il se part-
age avec nous en nous réveillant et en nous donnant une nouvelle vie. Son Fils, Jésus-Christ, l'a con-
firmé lorsqu'il a déclaré: «Je suis le chemin, la vérité et la vie». En tant que chrétiens, nous
sommes appelés à partager notre expérience de Dieu avec les autres. Le partage de notre expérience
de Dieu ne se fait pas simplement par le bien matériel ou la nourriture, ni par le soutien que nous
apportons à autrui. Il est plus que cela. Il s'agit de partager notre foi en Dieu avec autrui à travers les
vertus évangéliques de simplicité, de vie fraternelle et de piété.
«Notre expérience de Dieu devient un pain à partager»
Le partage de notre foi avec les autres nous permet de
voir au-delà des problèmes et des différences que nous
avons dans notre communauté, dans notre famille ou
dans notre société. Parce que la communauté, la famille
ou la société dans laquelle nous vivons sont des dons de
l'Esprit. Nous sommes donc appelés à cultiver ce don de
la vie dans l'Esprit et à nous encourager et nous soutenir
mutuellement afin de faire de nos communautés, de nos
familles ou de notre société des écoles de foi pour nous-mêmes, pour les jeunes et pour tous ceux qui
ont faim de Dieu. .
L‟expérience de Dieu de la premiere communauté chrétienne était centrée sur l'amour et le pardon, le
soutien et l'aide, l'oubli de soi, l'ouverture aux autres et la joie. En tant que chrétiens, nous sommes
appelés à modeler notre vie sur cette première communauté chrétienne et sur la maison de Nazareth
afin de développer ces attitudes qui font de notre esprit de famille une réalité. De cette manière, notre
style de relation avec les autres et notre expérience de Dieu deviennent du pain à partager.
Récemment, j'ai eu l'occasion de célébrer l'anniversaire de deux pays qui ont obtenu leur indépend-
ance des gouvernements colonials. Les îles Salomon et Vanuatu. Dans les deux pays, il y a un senti-
ment de liberté et de fierté. Les gens sont très fiers de ce qu‟ils sont en tant que citoyens de ces pays,
quelle que soit l‟image négative des réalités politiques que vit chaque pays. Lors des deux célébrations
de l'anniversaire de l'indépendance, les peuples se sont réunis pour former une seule nation, pour
remercier Dieu des bénédictions qu'il accorde à leur pays et à son peuple. Et célébrer ensemble,
partager le parcours qu‟ils entreprennent en tant que peuple de cette nation.
Oui, notre parcours de vie en tant que nation, en tant que communauté ou en tant qu'individu, est un
parcours visant à amener Dieu à la réalité dans nos expériences quoti-
diennes. Chacun est né avec différents dons et talents donnés par Dieu.
Tous ces dons et talents sont destinés à être utilisés et mis au service
des autres. Ces dons et talents doivent être partagés pour aider à bâtir
une vie meilleure. Mais malheureusement, certains d‟entre nous
possèdent les dons et les talents que Dieu leur a donnés et ne les ont
jamais utilisés pour aider ceux qui ont besoin d‟aide et de soutien. En
d‟autres termes, ces personnes qui n‟utilisent pas les dons et les talents
que Dieu leur a donnés perdent la vie. Ils ne vivent pas pleinement et avec joie la vie que Dieu leur a
donnée dans ce monde.
En tant que maristes appelés à vivre ensemble, il est difficile de vivre avec de telles personnes en com-
munauté. Il est difficile de vivre avec des gens qui ne trouvent pas important la vie en communauté,
parce qu‟ils ne se soucient pas des autres. Toute leur vie est centrée sur eux-mêmes et sur leur propre
monde. Ce qu'ils font dans la vie, c'est pour leur propre satisfaction et leurs propres avantages. Ce
type d'attitude dans la vie en communauté est très décourageant et peut affecter le bon travail que
font les autres.
Je crois que pour ces personnes ou ces individus, il y a une possibilité de réfléchir profondément à
leur vie. Et poser des questions comme; Qu'est-ce que Dieu essaie de me dire de ma vie? Ou qu'est-ce
que Dieu essaie de me dire au sujet de mes attitudes envers la vie que je vis? Ou est-ce que ma vie vaut
la peine pour les autres avec qui je vis?
Notre vie et nos expériences de Dieu doivent être comme du pain à partager entre nous pour
nourrir et donner la vie à ceux avec qui nous vivons et servons. C'est l'un de nos appels en tant que
chrétiens ou en tant que maristes. Nous, Maristes de Champagnat, qui venons de célébrer avec
l'Église l'une de nos fêtes patronales de l'Institut, “l'Assomption de la Bienheureuse Vierge Marie».
Cette fête importante de notre Bonne Mère nous rappelle que nous devons remercier Dieu pour
toutes les bénédictions et tous les bienfaits de notre vie. Et aussi de partager ces bénédictions et
merveilles avec les autres, comme Marie a fait avec sa cousine Elizabeth.
De cette façon, notre expérience de Dieu devient un pain à partager. Souvenons-nous toujours de
prier les uns pour les autres.

AROUND THE DISTRICT
TENARU SCHOOL COMMUNITY CELEBRATED 41TH ANIVERSARY
OF SOLOMON ISLANDS INDEPENDENCE
Tenaru school community came together to mark
the 41rst Anniversary of Solomon Islands Independ-
ence. They started with a Eucharistic celebration
with Father Jim Nolan as the main celebrant and
concelebrated with Father Valu. After the mass, eve-
ryone gathered in front of the school administration
for the flag raising and the singing of the national
anthem. Then there was some shared food prepared
for the day followed by some entertainments from
the children.
Laumanasa formation community also marked the Inde-
pendence with friends and family from St Martin after the
Eucharist celebration at Tenaru. There were food to
shared , drinks and of course the kava which began the
celebration.
It was a simple celebration who brought everyone togeth-
er to appreciate the gift of the people of Solomon Islands.
Everyone was happy to be part of the celebration.

Fishing is one of Vanga Point every day activities. Being at Vanga Point you will always expect
fresh fish on your plate for dinner. On the next photo, Br Hudson is mixing kava while Mr Measo
is waiting in full of smile and with eagerness to take the first bowl or serve of kava.
Below is the hardworking Mr Carlos, installing and putting the
florescent tube in one of St Marcellin Primary School classrooms.
This allow the primary school to have light in the classroom in the
evening. Great job Carlos and thanks to Br Hudson for the good
initiative to bring change to St Marcellin Primary school.
SANTO COMMUNITY, VANUATU
RENEWAL OF VOWS OF BROTHERS RAPHAEL FAKAIA AND FEREOL MELTEROR
On July 20, Brothers Raphael Fakaia and Fereol Melteror re-
newed their religious vows at the Marist Brothers St Michel
School community in Santo. It was a great joy for the two Broth-
ers to renew their commitment as Marist Brothers with friends
and families who were present. The renewal mass was celebrated
in the community. We were thankful to have Father James Moke-
la, SM as the main celebrant and concelebrated with Father Rich-
ard, SM and Father Maurice, Diocesan, who is the parish priest at
St Michel. After the Eucharistic, a well decorated cake was cut by
the two Brothers. Then a very delicious meal was shared together
with everyone who were present. And of course as part of Vanua-
tu customs, kava is always present at any ceremony.

RENOUVELLEMENT DES VŒUX DES FRÈRES RAPHAEL FAKAIA ET FEREOL
MELTEROR
Le 20 juillet, les frères Raphael Fakaia et Fereol Melteror ont renouvelé leurs voeux religieux a la
communauté des frères maristes a l‟ecole St Michel à Santo. Ce fut une grande joie pour les deux
frères de renouveler leur engagement en tant que frères maristes avec les amis et les familles qui ont
ete present . La messe de renouvellement a été célébrée dans la communauté. Nous étions reconnais-
sants d‟avoir le père James Mokela, SM comme célébrant principal et concélébré avec le père Rich-
ard, SM et le père Maurice, diocésain, curé de la paroisse de St Michel. Après l‟ eucharistie, un gâteau
bien décoré a été coupé par les deux frères. Ensuite, un très délicieux repas a été partagé avec toutes
les personnes présentes. Et bien sûr, dans le cadre des coutumes du Vanuatu, le kava est toujours
présent à toutes les cérémonies.

Marist Brothers Community at Santo in action with some school and com-
munity activities
Br Bonaventure working very hard in the joinery workshop when all the students were on holi-
day. Bona and his two other colleagues teachers are building cupboard, beds, chairs and many
other things in preparation for the school open day.
Below are Brs Henry Uguni and Fereol Melteror doing some renovation to the right wind house
of the Brothers. This was part of their community activities during the school break .
While the other three Brothers busying in the school, Br Raphael joined the other teachers and
students for the SISSA Game. The games lasted a week at Lycee de Luganville, not far from St
Michel Technical school. He was very involved with organisation and looking after the students
who were taking part in the sport activities. It is the provincial school games. Above some girls‟
soccer matches were played at St Michel School soccer field.

student there but as a teacher.

Voici un bref aperçu de la République du Vanuatu:
Les Britanniques et les Français ont colonisé les îles au 19ème siècle, ils ont convenu en 1906 de
les administrer conjointement, appelé le Condominium franco-britannique, qui dure jusqu'à l'in-
dépendance en 1980.
Vanuatu est reconnu comme l'un des pays les plus culturellement divers du monde. Outre les Ni-
Vanuatu et d'autres habitants des îles du Pacifique, il existe de petites communautés d'origine
française, britannique, australienne, néo-zélandaise, vietnamienne et chinoise.
Pays apparentés: France, Royaume-Uni. Autres nations et territoires mélanésiens: Fidji, Nouvelle-
Calédonie, Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, Îles Salomon.
L'archipel a une population de 278 000 habitants (en 2015), dont la capitale et la plus grande ville
est Port Vila.
Les langues parlées sont le bislama (créole basé en anglais), l'anglais, le français et diverses
langues austronésiennes.
La célébration de la fête de l'indépendance est devenue l'un des événements annuels dans le pays.
Les neuf provinces avec les deux villes principales (Port Vila et Luganville) marquent ce jour im-

Here is a short background of the Republic of Vanuatu:
British and French settled the islands in the 19th century, they agreed in 1906 to administer the islands jointly, called the
British-French Condominium, which last until independence in 1980.
Vanuatu is recognized as one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. Besides the Ni-Vanuatu and other Pacif-
ic Island people, there are small communities of French, British, Australian, New Zealand, Vietnamese, and Chinese
origin.
Related countries: France, United Kingdom. Other Melanesian nations and territories: Fiji, New Caledonia, Papua New
Guinea, Solomon Islands .
The archipelago has a population of 278,000 (in 2015), capital and largest city is Port Vila.
Spoken languages are Bislama (English-based creole), English, French and various Austronesian languages.
The independence day celebration became one of the annual events in over the country. The nine provinces with the two
main towns or cities (Port Vila and Luganville) mark this important day when the country took its independence from
France and United Kingdom. Below are

MABIRI, BOUGAINVILLE
AT THE MARIST BROTHERS COMMUNITY…
It is always good and supportive to have an elderly
Brother in the community. Br John Paul MAURO recently celebrated its 82 birthday anniversary with the
Brothers and friends at Mabiri community. Regardless
of his sensitive health, Br John is still in a good space in his life and as a member of the community. Br John
is always available to anyone who comes to him for ad-vice or just for a chat. Thank you Br John Paul for your
life witness as a Marist Brother. Your perseverance in your religious life as a Brother meant a lot to us, your
younger Brothers in the District. Below is some of the

THE VISIT OF BR LIBARDO AND BR ALBERTO CARLOS
IN THE DISTRICT - August 5 to 16, 2019.
It was with great pleasure that we welcome our two Brothers from the General Administration on
their visit to the District of Melanesia. The two Brothers are: Br Jose Libardo Garzon Duque who is
the Econome General and Br Carlos Alberto Rojas Carvajal is the Director of Evangelisation and Ed-
ucation for the Institute of the Marist Brothers.
Unfortunately, due to their tight schedule, they only visited three communities and ministries. In
the Solomon Islands, they visited Laumanasa Community and St Joseph‟s Catholic Secondary
School, Tenaru. Then in Papua New Guinea, they visited Port Moresby Community where they at-
tend the Extended District Council meeting. And in Bougainville they visited the Brothers‟ commu-
nity and St Joseph‟s College Mabiri.
It was an opportunity for them to experience how we do mission in this part of the Institute and
mostly to know the realities of where our ministries are and look like. As they themselves experi-
enced and saw with they own eyes that doing mission in Melanesia can be very difficult and very
challenging, as you never know what will happen when you travel from one part of the District to the
other.
But regardless of the hardship in getting on their flights from Bougainville back to Port Moresby,
they really appreciated the warm welcome that they receive in the three areas that they visited. The
hospitality of everyone, Brothers, Lay Marists and the students touched them very much.
Thanks to everyone who made them feel at home during their visit.

LA VISITE DU FRERE LIBARDO ET DU FRERE ALBERTO CARLOS
DANS LE DISTRICT - Aout 5 au 16, 2019.
C‟est avec un grand plaisir que nous avons accueilli nos deux Frères de l‟Administration générale pour leur visite dans le
District de Mélanésie. Les deux frères sont: Frère José Libardo Garzon Duque qui est l'Econome Général et Frère Carlos
Alberto Rojas Carvajal est le Directeur de l'évangélisation et de l'éducation dans l'Institut des Frères Maristes.
Malheureusement, en raison de leur calendrier serré, ils n‟ont visité que trois communautés et ministères. Aux Îles Salo-
mon, ils ont visité la communauté de Laumanasa et l‟école secondaire catholique Saint-Joseph de Tenaru. Ensuite, en
Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, ils ont visité la communauté de Port Moresby où ils ont assisté à la réunion du conseil de
district élargi. Et à Bougainville, ils ont visité la communauté des Frères et le College St Joseph de Mabiri.
Ce fut une occasion pour eux de faire l'expérience de notre mission dans cette partie de l'Institut et surtout de connaître
la réalité de l'endroit où se trouvent nos ministères. Comme ils ont eux-mêmes fait l'expérience et vu de leurs propres
yeux que faire une mission en Mélanésie peut être très difficile avec beaucoup de defi, car nous ne savons jamais ce qui
peut se passer lorsque nous voyagerons d'une partie du district à l'autre.
Mais quelles que soient les difficultés rencontrées pour prendre leur vol de Bougainville à leur retour à Port Moresby, ils
ont vraiment apprécié l‟accueil chaleureux qu‟ils ont reçu dans les trois endroits qu‟ils ont visitées. L'hospitalité de tous,
frères, laïcs maristes et étudiants leur a vraiment touches.
Merci à tous ceux qui les ont fait sentir chez eux lors de leur visite.

The photos below show how the two Brothers have been welcome to St Joseph‟s College Mabiri in
the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. In Melanesia culture it is always an honor to receive visi-
tors from overseas. And in this case to receive people like the Marist Brothers whose presence and
history in Bougainville is very appreciated and respected by so many people who were educated by
the Marist Brothers. Marist Education pedagogy is very honor in Bougainville and particularly at
St Joseph‟s Rigu and now in Mabiri.
The students of St Joseph’s College Mabiri welcomed Br Libardo and Br Alberto Car-
los at their arrival to the College with the traditional son and blowing bamboo called
“SINGSING KAUR”.
The two Brothers were washed on their feet as part their
welcome in a foreign land and in Mabiri and in Bougain-
ville for the first time. And also they were a test of the tra-
ditional food called “TAMATAMA”.

Rassembelement des Jeunes de la Zone Sud
Nouvelle Caledonie Les jeunes chrétiens de la zone sud partagent leur foi.
Du 12 au 18 août plus de 300 jeunes de la zone sont réunis à la mis-
sion de Saint-Louis pour leur rassemblement comme tous les ans.
Tout est commencé aux environs de 9h par l'accueil des groupes de
différents groupes. Ces jeunes se sont ensuite dirigés vers la chefferie
pour qu'ils soient accueillis par le chef de tribu de Saint-Louis.
L‟église de la mission de Saint-Louis n‟est jamais jamais autant que
de jeunes épousards sont venus spécialement du sud de la Calédonie
et des îles loyautés. Ce rendez-vous a pour objectif de leur permettre
de partager leur enseignement autour du thème «RENDEZ
GRÂCE AU SEIGNEUR ETERNEL EST SON AMOUR».
Chaque matin, c'est le même rituel. Après l‟office dès l‟Aude, suivi du petit-déjeuner, puis arrive au temps de l‟enseignement
sur les sacrements.
Après chaque enseignement, les jeunes se retrouvent en atelier de réflexion. L‟après-midi des ateliers culturels, organ-
isateur de la découverte de la tribu, atelier tressage, champs d‟action, atelier vocation, psaume, visite des malades en tribu.
Les journées sont ponctuées de temps de chants, de partage et de soirées. Le rassemblement des jeunes chrétiens de l‟église
catholique. Les 300 participants se retrouvent pour une dernière messe de passation du flambeau du prochain rassemble-
ment 2020 à la suite d'une cérémonie de suivi avec un grand repas avec l'ensemble des fidèles avant leur régate respectives.

Young Christians in the South Zone share their faith.
From August 12 to 18 more than 300 young people from the southern zone gathered at Saint Louis Parish for their gather-
ing as every year.
It all started around 9am by welcoming groups from different parishes accompanied by their leaders. These young people
then went to the chieftaincy for the custom where they were welcomed by the chief of the tribe of Saint Louis.
The Parish Church of Saint Louis has never welcomed so many young people since they came especially from south of Cale-
donia and loyalty islands. This meeting aims to allow them to share their faith around the teachings on the theme " GIVE
GRACE TO THE LORD ETERNAL IS HIS LOVE". Every morning, it's the same ritual. After the service from the
Aude, followed by the breakfast then arrives the time of the teaching on the sacraments.
After each teaching, the young people meet in reflection workshops. Afternoon cultural workshops organize for the discov-
ery of the tribe, weaving workshop, yam fields, vocation workshop, psalm, visit of the sick in the tribe.
The days are punctuated by time of songs, sharing and entertainments in the evening.
The gathering of young Christians from the Catholic Church. The 300 participants meet for a final Mass, and of goodbye by
passing the torch of the next 2020 gathering to the parish of Paita followed by a big meal with all the faithful before return-
ing to their respective parishes.

Dear fellow Marists, Greetings to you all, my third visit to our schools in the dis-trict was at St Joseph‟s Tenaru, St Dominic‟s RTC and St Marcellin Primary School Vanga Point and also, I visited our young men in formation. Same theme that was used in St Joseph‟s College, Mabiri and St Michel College, Santo was used at Tenaru Secondary School and St Marcellin Pri-mary School. With St Domini‟s RTC students I gave a talk to them about the Impact of Alcohol and the damage it causes to relationship. Students were very interested and participated well throughout the sessions, doings activities and asking questions. Many questions were asked regard-ing the areas of child rights and child abuse. A week was also spent with our young men in formation, working with them in the areas of child rights and human digni-ty. As we all know “No child should have walk through life alone, unprotected. Do you know of any child in need of protection?” Please do take responsibility to protect him or her because Child Protection is every body‟s business. Thank you and God bless Andrew Litanga

Bonjour à tous, ma troisième visite dans nos écoles du district a eu lieu à St Joseph’s Tenaru, à St Dominic’s School et à l’école primaire St Marcellin de
Vanga Point, et j’ai également rendu visite à nos jeunes hommes en formation. Le thème a été utilisé au College Saint Joseph Mabiri et au College de
Saint Michel Santo est la meme qu’à l’école secondaire de Tenaru et à l’école primaire St Marcellin. Avec les étudiants de St Dominique RTC, je leur ai
parlé de l’impact de l’alcool et des dommages qu’il entraîne pour la relation. Les étudiants étaient très intéressés et ont b ien participé tout au long des
sessions, des activités et des questions. De nombreuses questions ont été posées sur les domaines des droits de l’enfant et de la maltraitance. Nous
avons également passé une semaine avec nos jeunes hommes en formation, travaillant avec eux dans les domaines des droits de l'enfant et de la dignité
humaine.
Comme nous le savons tous, «Aucun enfant ne devrait vivre seul, sans protection. Connaissez-vous un enfant qui a besoin de protection? »Veuillez
prendre la responsabilité de le protéger car la protection de l’enfance est l’affaire de tous.

The programme is an Oceania Partnership Commission (OPC) initiative on working together to support Administrative
Units in the Marist Oceania Region in sharing key formation programmes and processes. Therefore, I am truly thankful
to Dan Dungey (OPC Chair –Champagnat In The Pacific) Br. Doug Darwick (District of Pacific -CITP) and Elizabeth
Falconer (Australia Province -Footsteps) for your tremendous assistance with resources and materials in writing the
Wakabaut wantaim Champagnat Programme (WWC)..
In June 17th -19th this year, the St.Joseph‟s Tenaru Staff (Teachers and Support Staff) attended the „Wakabaut Wantaim
Champagnat‟ formation program at Tenaru. The Wakabaut is a 3 days Reflective Journey programme that explores the
Marist Spirituality, Vision and Education in the tradition and of our founder St. Marcellin Champagnat.
The Wakabaut Team of Facilitators were the School Administration team who have done formation programmes with
support from the District and Oceania Region. “Tagio Tumas!” to: Abraham Hihiru (Realities, Challenges & Calls for us
Today –Five Pillars & Practical Implications for my Ministry), Abraham Haiuasi (Champagnat Story & Education in the
Champagnat Tradition), Theresa Hou (Mary for Us Today & Marist Heritage). The selection of facilitators is important
in terms of localizing the programme so that the local leaders claim ownership of the programme.
After much thought, the success of the Wakabaut was made possible with selfless love and support from:
The Staff (Participants) and the School Administration for their time and commitment, finances and printing of materials.
Br. Sixtus Winduo who supported us through the Wakabaut through his active participation and sharing his Marist wis-
dom, experience, insights and heritage.
Catering Team – Primrose, Adrian, Thomas, Eliza, Annie, Amos, (Charlie & Valentine –for your presence), for food

After the Wakabaut, there has been an overwhelming and positive feedback from the participants who have been inspired
by the Marist Spirituality in working with the young people who are most in need. The big question now is..Where to
next? To start work on writing, resources and materials for Wakabaut Wantaim Champagnat 2 and most importantly, to
continue Champagnat‟s Vision as Marist Educators.

“WAKABAUT WANTAIM CHAMPAGNAT PROGRAMME”
St. Joseph’s – Mabiri – Bougainville
From St. Joseph‟s Tenaru – we flew to Port Moresby and then to Bougainville to St. Joseph‟s Mabiri Col-
lege to run the „Wakabaut Wantaim Champagnat programme‟. The college comprises of three different
streams, the High School, Technical Stream and the Primary School. The staff who participated were from
the 3 streams of the college. This also included the support staff in the college and our two officers from the
Wanbel House in Arawa. „The Wakabaut‟ programme was done on the 1st- 3rd July. This was just timely as
it was the In-Service week for all the schools.
Much appreciation and gratitude must go to the Team of presenters who worked hard to deliver the Waka-
baut Programme: Br. Mark Kenatsi – Champagnat Story, Marist Heritage & Ministry Implications , Br.
Finan – Champagnat Letters, Benedict Tooming – Education in the Champagnat Tradition & Marist Herit-
age, Abraham Hihiru: Realities, Calls for us Today & Five Pillars. Not forgetting the College Staff who
helped with printing of materials and setting up, food and drinks, Br. Cyril for making sure we had electric-
ity and the hardworking driver, Benedict Burosi who was supposed to be a participant but worked in-
stead.“Tenkyu tumas!”
The staff were very enthusiastic and participated extremely well to the extent where we could never finish
on time at the end of the day. As one participant said to me, “For a long time, I never really knew St. Mar-
cellin Champagnat, I understand now the mission of the Marist Brothers and my work as a teacher in a
Marist School.”
Br. Mark Kenatsi, the School Principal also extended the invitation to our fellow Marists in other schools.
We were fortunate to have John Tukana attend „The Wakabaut‟ which he was truly thankful for.

nariat océanien (OPC) visant à aider les unités administra-
tives de la région océanienne mariste à mettre en commun les pro-
grammes et processus de formation clés. Par conséquent, je suis vrai-
ment reconnaissant à Dan Dungey (président du OPC - Champagnat

Wakabaut est un programme de réflexion de trois jours qui explore la spiritualité, la vision et l‟édu-
cation maristes dans la tradition et de notre fondateur, St. Marcellin Champagnat.
L‟équipe de facilitateurs Wakabaut est l‟équipe chargée de l‟administration des écoles, qui a mis au
point des programmes de formation avec l‟appui du district et de la région d‟Océanie. «Tagio
Tumas!» À: Abraham Hihiru (Réalités, défis et appels pour nous aujourd'hui - Cinq piliers et impli-
cations pratiques pour mon ministère), Abraham Haiuasi (Histoire de Champagnat et education ),
Theresa Hou (Marie pour nous aujourd'hui et Patrimoine mariste). La sélection des facilitateurs est
importante pour localiser le programme afin que les responsables locaux revendiquent le pro-
gramme.
Après une bonne réflexion, le succès du Wakabaut a été rendu possible grâce à un amour désin-
téressé et au soutien:
• Des personnels (participants) et l’administration de l’école pour leur temps et leur engagement,
leurs finances et l‟impression de matériel.
• Fr. Sixtus Winduo qui nous a soutenus à travers le Wakabaut par sa participation active et le part-
age de sa sagesse, de son expérience, de ses idées et de son patrimoine maristes.
• Équipe restauration - Primrose, Adrian, Thomas, Eliza, Annie, Amos (Charlie & Valentine - pour
votre présence), pour la préparation des repas.
• Le Pere Valu (sm) pour célébrer la messe.
Après le Wakabaut, les participants qui ont été inspirés par la spiritualité mariste à travailler avec
les jeunes les plus démunis ont eu un retour enthousiaste et positif. La grande question est
maintenant .. Où aller ensuite? Commencer à travailler sur l‟écriture, les ressources et le matériel
pour Wakabaut Wantaim Champagnat 2 et, surtout, poursuivre la vision de Champagnat en tant
qu‟éducateurs maristes.

De St. Joseph Tenaru, nous avons pris l‟avion pour Port Mores-
by, puis pour Bougainville et pour le college St. Joseph Mabiri
afin de gérer le «programme Wakabaut Wantaim Cham-
pagnat». Le collège comprend trois filières différentes: le sec-
ondaire, le technique et le primaire. Les membres du personnel
qui ont participé venaient des 3 fillieres du collège. Cela com-
prenait également le personnel de soutien du collège et nos
deux officiers de la Maison Wanbel à Arawa. Le programme
„Wakabaut‟ a été réalisé du 1er au 3 juillet. C‟était tout à fait op-
portun, car c‟était la semaine des formation continue pour
toutes les écoles.
Nous devons exprimer notre reconnaissance et notre gratitude à
l‟équipe de présentateurs qui a travaillé d'arrache-pied pour
mener à bien le programme Wakabaut: le fr. Mark Kenatsi - His-
toire de Champagnat, conséquences pour le ministère et l'hé-
ritage maristes, fr. Finan - Lettres Champagnat, Benedict Toom-
ing - L‟éducation à la tradition champagnat et l‟héritage mariste,
Abraham Hihiru: réalités, appels pour nous aujourd‟hui et cinq
piliers. Sans oublier le personnel du Collège qui a aidé à l‟impres-
sion des matériaux et à la préparation des repas et des boissons,
le fr. Cyril pour s‟assurer que nous avions l‟électricité et le chauffeur assidu, Benedict Burosi, qui
était supposé être un participant mais qui travaillait à la place. Tenkyu tumas!
Le personnel était très enthousiaste et a extrêmement bien participé
dans la mesure où nous ne pouvions jamais finir à l'heure à la fin de
la journée. Comme un participant me l'a dit: «Pendant longtemps, je
n'ai jamais vraiment connu St. Marcellin Champagnat, je comprends
maintenant la mission des Frères Maristes et mon travail d'ensei-
gnant dans une école mariste.
Le fr. Mark Kenatsi, le directeur de l'école, a également adressé l'in-
vitation à nos camarades maristes d'autres écoles. Nous avons eu la chance d‟assister John Tuka-
na à «The Wakabaut», pour lequel il était vraiment reconnaissant.

It was with a heavy heart and great sadness to hear of the death of our beloved Bishop Bernard Unabali, Bishop
of the Diocese of Bougainville. He died at 1.49pm (PNG time) at St Luke‟s Hospital of Manila, Philippines.
On behalf of all of us Marists in the District of Melanesia (Brothers, Lay Marists, Marist Students), I extend to
the family of Bishop Bernard, to the clergy, to the religious men and women, and to the people of Bougainville
Diocese our sincere condolences in this very difficult moment of mourning.
Let us pray for the repose his soul and for the people of the Diocese of Bougainville. May he rest in peace!
