Rotarian Martin Anscombe visits Sturbridge Rotary Club
Charles and Marguerite Battersby host a party at their home on Tuesday September 27th to welcome Rotari-
an Martin Anscombe and Helen Glibbery from Norfolk, Watton County, of the United Kingdom. There was
lots of food and laughter about spur-of-the-moment exchange of fun stories.

Helen Glibbery were visiting from Norfolk, United
Kingdom.
Klaus and Glenys Hachfeld were hosting them while
in Sturbridge visiting several landmarks to include
Old Sturbridge Village.
Part of Martin Anscombe’s presentation was on his
military career as a pilot of the Vulcan B MK 2
bomber. Martin also noted that of 35 airbases in the
UK, over 17 of them were maned by American Forc-
es. Martin also proudly mentioned that the largest
U.S. Air Force library outside of the United States is
in Norwich, UK.
Martin concluded his presentation on his 32 years in
Rotary of which he was President of his club twice.

Peter constantly takes the initiative to
support and enhance the Sturbridge Rota-
ry Club. From July 1st 2015 to 30 June
2016 Peter continued to manage the Lot-
tery Basket Fundraiser resulting in
$10,000 dollars all of which directed to-
ward the scholarship program.
Peter did not stop there. He worked with
the Publick House management resulting
in the Sturbridge Rotary Club being part
of a Community Benefit Fundraiser Din-
ner that resulted in over $1,000 raised for
the charity objectives of the Club. Peter
also orders and coordinates the distribu-
tion of over 250 dictionaries each year to
local 3rd graders.
Peter continues his dedication with the
current Lottery Basket Fundraiser and
recently organized the Fall cleanup of Ro-
tary Park .

Kevin Filchak talks about Sturbridge’s Economic Development
and Tourism

his discussion with the Club at the October 3rd meeting.
Kevin discussed several objectives he is working on as the Director of Economic Development
and Tourism for the Town of Sturbridge. Kevin opened his presentation on the progress of a
Consultant from Boston working on plans for a trolley from Rte., 148 to Hobbs Brook Shop-
ping Center. Other projects Kevin is working on; re-write in plain English the guide book of
Bylaws for doing business in Sturbridge, establish an outreach program so “what can Stur-
bridge do to help your business”, review a new “Branding” symbol for Sturbridge such as a
weather vane and setup a policy on standardizing how to use social media.
Much discussion followed Kevin’s presentation given many members of the Club have busi-
ness interest in Sturbridge.

Upcoming Events
Monday, October 17 - Regular Meeting - Stourbridge / Sturbridge Friendship Day. There will be a re-
play of a live greeting between the Clubs that was skype-recorded earlier in the day during Stourbridge's
regular Rotary meeting .
Saturday, October 22 - Fellowship - Hearty hors d’oeuvers at the Art Center in Southbridge followed
by a performance by Gateway Players “Breaking Legs”. Cost $23.00 per person.
Monday, October 24th - No Meeting.
Saturday, October 29th - “Antique Appraisal Show ” fundraiser
Club Notes
.Klaus has submitted Sturbridge Rotary Club’s fifth International Project for approval to the District.
This project is known as the Kosovo II project.
The Club donated $1,500 to the John Paul II Food Pantry at the October 3rd meeting. Mr. Bill Pioppi
was present to receive the check on behalf of the Food Pantry. Bill gave an update on the growing needs
of the Food Pantry and thanked the Club for the donation.
The Membership Committee is issuing new business cards to the members with the Four Way Test on
the back of the card. The Committee is also developing a new flyer / brochure
Peter has reserved another Community Benefit Dinner on July 17, 2017.
