Denominational News Personnel Changes

Willie Hisey Pierson has accepted the position of

director of Insurance Services for Brethren Benefit Trust (BBT), filling a position to be vacated by Randy

Yoder on Dec. 31. Hisey Pierson began his duties on

Sept. 21, and will work with Yoder during the transition period.

Newsline is produced by Cheryl Brumbaugh-Cayford, director of news services for the Church of the Brethren General Board, [email protected] or 800-323-8039 ext. 260. Newsline appears every other Wednesday.

Annual Conference theme is announced for 2011.

The theme has been announced for the Church of the Brethren‟s Annual Conference next year, July 2-6, 2011, in Grand Rapids, Mich. Moderator Robert E. Alley announced the theme "Gifted with Promise: Extending Jesus’ Table," based on the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000. "This story is one of few to appear in all four Gospels (Matthew 14:13-21; Mark 6:30-44; Luke 9:10-17; and John 6:1-14)," Alley noted in his announcement. "In every age including our own, Jesus continues to challenge disciples to respond to people with the sustaining benefit of the Gospel whether in compassionate service, forgiving grace, or abiding hope. "In „Gifted with Promise: Extending Jesus‟ Table,‟ Brethren encounter a challenging assignment: (1) to discover afresh their giftedness with Gospel and (2) to envision their role in loving the world enough to share the physical and spiritual benefit of the Gospel," the moderator‟s statement continued. "This theme connects our common interests in spirituality and service, practice and prayer. We extend the table with promised resources of grace and love. The theme calls us to mission and evangelism where we not only share and invite but we cultivate discipleship as we offer tangible resources of food, clothing, medical care, and more. At the table, we share, we receive, and we learn."

Prayer is requested for the people of North Korea

and for Robert and Linda Shank, a Church of the Brethren couple preparing to teach at a university there.

Global Mission Partnerships executive director Jay Wittmeyer is requesting prayer following news of a Sept.

28 convention of the Korea Workers‟ Party to appoint a

new leader for the country. According to CNN, it is the first gathering of party delegates in several decades and

may be a crucial event for the people of North Korea. The Shanks have been teaching in China at a university close

to the border with North Korea, preparing to be among the first group of teachers at the new Pyongyang

University of Science and Technology. Robert Shank holds

a doctorate in wheat breeding and has conducted rice research. Linda Shank holds a master‟s in counseling and

learning disabilities, and will be teaching English.

A continuing education event with Bob Neff and Chris Bowman

The Village Green at The Village at Morrisons Cove, Martinsburg, PA

Drs. Bob Neff and Chris Bowman will explore the challenges of preaching with a voice that reaches beyond one‟s faith community without abandoning one‟s faith community. Topics of discussion will include: illustrations that spark the imagination, recognizing our diverse audience, and grounding our words in the Word. Those attending will receive a DVD of select sermons preached by Bowman to review before the event. Cost for this event is $50. There is an additional $10 charge for those wishing to receive CEU documentation. The registration deadline is November 1, 2010. Refreshments are included in the registration fee. AbbsTract October 2010

You can find a lot of things on the Internet. Today I found that October 1-7 is “Universal Children’s Week.” So I thought

about that for a bit. And I thought, “What are we doing in our churches to honor and bless children?” Of course, that

will vary from one congregation to another, but I want to ask you today – Are you part of a kid-friendly church family?

Most of us are kind to children on some level, and I’m not suggesting we cater to their every whim, but I bet we could all

do more to make kids feel welcome and loved while they’re with us. Here are some practical ideas for celebrating

children in your congregation and welcoming those in your community…

Put a colorful, sturdy step-stool in each bathroom and near each water fountain.

Sing songs and hymns happily, with a spring in the tempo.

Fill canvas bags with coloring books, crayons, Bible story books, and other quiet toys and hang the bags in the

vestibule. Kids can take one when they come in and hang it up as they depart.

Encourage kids to share during your time of joys and concerns. Don’t laugh at their troubles – pray for them!

Remember children’s birthdays, and send an age-appropriate card from the church.

Have some kind of rite-of-passage ceremony – at one church, a certain family buys Bibles for all the 8-year-olds

every September. They are presented during worship.

Encourage children to participate in Sunday worship – recitations, special music and skits are fun and memorable.

They help everyone to relax and enjoy God’s gifts.

Don’t be afraid of messes. God prefers a Sunday school room with glitter glue on the ceiling rather than one with

cold and dusty chairs.

Plan special outings for kids – picnics, fishing trips, family game nights, pajama and bedtime story nights – they

aren’t really difficult, and the benefits are invaluable.

Recognize that children are not little adults. They are children, and their needs are different from yours.

Be creative and have fun! You can still maintain order and discipline while having a great time.

Dedicate a room or corner of your building for housing a children’s library with Christian books they can borrow.

Encourage your pastor to evaluate his/her sermons for simplicity and child-friendly language.

Provide a well-stocked, clean nursery – preferably with a speaker that allows parents/nursery staff to hear what’s

going on in the sanctuary.

Don’t relegate every child to the nursery during worship – squalling and screaming might warrant a trip down the

hall, but normal chatter should be a welcome sound. It means there are little ones in worship!

Give parents a break. Instead of criticizing their methods, offer to help and set an example.

Go all out for Vacation Bible School. Plan months in advance, advertise ‘till it hurts, then deliver a great Christ-

centered week for every child who comes into your care.

Prepare to be a fool for Christ – act silly, crawl on the floor, get wet, laugh until you cry, do all the voices.

Set up evenings at your church where children can come and play, and parents can run errands or enjoy a date

night. Get your teens involved, too!

Plan a dynamic church picnic – book a day at Camp Harmony or find someone with a pool and a big yard. Plan

games, crafts, challenge events, a bonfire – go all out!

Always keep in mind that Jesus wanted the little children to come to Him. He never turned them away.

What else can you think of to do? Many of us believe that having a child-friendly church is an impossible dream. But

any dream that God plants in your heart can become reality – trust Him and obey Him and see what happens!

A kid at heart,

Abby

Harvest Home Project

The generosity and love shown to the Brethren Home during Harvest Home time is sincerely appreciated. As you prepare for Harvest Home, donations from the wish list mailed in September would be most welcome. However, if your congregation found that monetary support of one of our proposed small projects would be more practical, please consider the list project below.

ADDRESSABLE SMOKE DETECTORS: These detectors not only respond to smoke, but also pin point the fire location enabling a swift, accurate response. Approximate cost: $1,500.

DORMER REPAIRS: Repairing and painting the stucco dormers of the 1921 wing will complete the outdoor repairs that have included soffit and fascia repair along with re-pointing of the brickwork. Approximate cost: $5,000.

T-GEL CUSHIONS: These gel-filled cushions reduce shear forces and provide a stable, flat sitting surface for residents in sling-seat wheelchairs. Approximate cost: $150 per cushion.

To support these Harvest Home projects, please direct your donation to:

Donna Locher, Finance Director, Brethren Home Community Windber

277 Hoffman Avenue, Windber, PA 15963

Please mark your check for its intended use. Thank you for your support of our mission to provide superior care for our residents!

Personal Care Inspection Held

The Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare held its annual inspection of our Personal Care unit on August 13. The requirements for Personal Care inspections were last modified in 2005, and because of the superior inspection results from the past few years, our facility met the criteria for participation in an indicator survey. The indicator survey consists of a review of the top 49 regulations plus 5 randomly selected items. The traditional inspection includes 465 regulations. Each item in the modified inspection is rigorously examined, and if more than one deficiency is found, the facility is returned to the original survey format. We were the first Personal Care home in the central region to participate in an indicator survey, and with only one minor deficiency, the Home passed. Because of the passing grade, we will be evaluated in an indicator survey again next year, and return to the full inspection in the third year. Information on personal care home inspections may be accessed at the Department of Public website: www.dpw.state.pa.us.

District Women’s Rally At Pettikoffer House

Staff members from Nursing, Activities, Public Relations, Physical Therapy, and Dietary worked together to organize the district Women’s Rally at Pettikoffer House on August 12. The women attending were treated to activities ranging from “Sittercizing” exercises and nutrition advice to Wii games, while being encouraged to seek “living water” in their lives. Approximately 50 women attended, and were kind enough to donate over 80 boxes of Kleenex for use at the Home.

Beauty in the Great Outdoors

One of the most popular spots at the Home during this extraordinarily warm summer has been the new patio. With the donation by a resident’s family for new outdoor furniture and flower urns, the patio has turned into a beautiful retreat. Romaine Heckler generously sewed outdoor cushions to offer extra sitting comfort and bright color to the area. The lawns around the patio have undergone some beautiful changes too. Our Home Auxiliary donated funds for additional landscaping along the front of the Home. The lilies and roses are already in bloom, and the grasses and decorative trees help soften the building’s lines. Our residents have been enjoying social activities as well as family visits in the great outdoors.

Summer Fun!

The annual Home Chicken Barbecue was held on June 5. The Walnut Grove Church men volunteered with Home staff members at the barbecue pits, women from the Home Auxiliary staffed the take out area, and the Walnut Grove women served as the dining room wait staff. Expanded hours at the take out and a craft sale in the basement chapel helped make the event the most profitable one in many years. Best of all, the chicken was delicious!

Children in the Pioneer group at the Conemaugh church were challenged by Associate Pastor

Amelia Derr to create a pay-it-forward activity for the church outreach program. As a group, they decided to support the Home with donations of cookies, crafts, and baskets filled with stationery and toiletries. Their visit to the Home on July 20th allowed them to see the joy their generous gifts brought to our residents and to experience for themselves the joy of Christian giving.

Christmas was celebrated at the Home on July 22nd when the Maple Spring church made their

annual summer visit. Residents were treated to Christmas cookies, friendly visits, and small gifts on this out-of-season holiday.

The fifth annual Brethren Home Golf Outing was held on August 9. Seventy-two avid golfers

spent the day in competition on the links at Windber Country Club. Donna Locher, Stephanie Negry and Melony Porada of the organizational committee were happy to report that the tournament was successful, and provided a sizable profit for the Brethren Home Charitable Trust.

Chief meteorologist Jim Burton of WJAC TV news visited the Home on August 18. He gave an

informal talk about the science of broadcast meteorology, his role at the television station, and his personal life, and then fielded resident questions. Everyone enjoyed his engaging personality and sense of humor. He mentioned his Home visit during the weather update on WJAC TV the following morning.

****Often organizations hire professional fund raisers. These professional groups take a

large portion of the money raised. We want to put together a team of individuals passionate

about the future of Camp Harmony to be our professional team to do a fund raising

campaign for scholarship money. This then will ultimately make Camp available to more

children and thus free our church donations to help with the Camp facility. This year alone

about $6,000 was used for scholarships. If you feel led to be a part of this team to raise

scholarship funds to enable all children to come to Camp, please call Camp as soon as

possible and ask for Janice.

There are 22 cabins at Camp. During 1924 – 1945 they were adopted and built by various

congregations and organizations in Western and Middle Pennsylvania. Recently the Camp

Board decided, during a visioning session, that the cabins were a priority. This was due to

safety and size codes according to the American Camping Association and the American

Disabilities Act. Again congregations will have an opportunity to adopt a cabin for

remodeling. More information will follow….

Camila, now eleven years old, recently moved from the Casa Kinder (pre-schooler’s dormitory) to the “pasillo” with the middle-aged girls. She says she likes the move because there is more room and more girls to befriend, so it is fun! She is in the fourth grade at Sinai where her favorite subject is social studies. She also enjoys the karate classes she recently began. She often helps with the little girls, by doing their hair and does a nice job at it! She says she would like to be a teacher in a beauty school when she grows up.

Camila also like to play soccer, hide n’ seek and dance, especially Punta, a traditional dance that originated among the Garifuna culture from the Atlantic coast of Honduras. Her favorite food is chicken, favorite movie is High School Musical, and favorite musical group is a Latino Rock band called….Camila! Paty, her fourteen year old sister lives at the Home, too; however, she has four other siblings who live with their mother. Her educators all agree she is well-behaved, cooperative, loves to help, and gets along well with others which made her deserving of being this month’s Child-of-the-Month. Please keep Camila and her family in prayers this month.

suffers from muscular dystrophy, she has found special

meaning in her life with the art classes she now takes every

Friday. Today she is very excited to share one of her first

paintings with all of you.

Last week our amazing chil-

dren had the opportunity to

perform for CARGILL, one of

Hogar Emanuel’s supporters, at

an event for their suppliers. The

children dressed in ethnic cos-

tumes, did a traditional dance and

gave out mementos (that they

made themselves) to the attendees from the community. It

was a wonderful way for the children to say “Gracias” and

give back a little something to those who help them.

OH NO! NOT AGAIN! The rainy

season has begun in Honduras and again due to the

soggy grounds, another section of the security wall

started to fall over. Luckily, before this wall completely col-

lapsed, we were able to begin repairs

before we had another catastrophe on

our hands. Eventually the wall around

the entire perimeter of the property

will need repaired. In the meantime,

the estimated cost of replacing only

this section of wall is $2500. The

home has acquired a few donations of blocks and cement to

help offset the amount of materials needed for the job, but

not nearly enough to cover the what is needed. Please con-

sider helping to keep the home safe with an extra donation to

help with this additional expense. God bless.

MEET CLAUDIA

Claudia has worked for the

Home for over two years and

was chosen to be highlighted

this month because of her in-

ner glow that draws the chil-

dren to her. She is always

willing to go the extra mile with

a positive attitude and says

that she loves her job and considers the children as

part of her own family. She is one of two educators

on the night shift for the middle and teenage girls.

She begins her shift at four o’clock by meeting the girls

when they return home from school. She shares din-

ner with them then supervises homework and chores.

In addition to making sure the girls are bathed, fed,

dressed and well-rested; she loves and cares for them,

listens to their problems and offers Christian advice.

Claudia does rounds throughout the dormitories to

make sure that no one is ill or unaccounted for several

times during the night. Awakening the girls at 4:30 am,

she makes sure they make their beds and wash their

own clothes (by hand!) before eating breakfast, then

she sends them off for another day at school. Claudia

also provides special personal care for Waldina as well

as shows unbelievable patience with Gabby, who is

mentally challenged and will not leave her side. Al-

though Claudia’s shift ends at 8:00 am, she rarely

leaves at that time, especially on Mondays when she

stays to attend an educator’s meeting.

During her time away from the Home, Claudia fills her

daylight hours teaching religious education classes for

her church, tutoring children in her neighborhood, and

doing outreach work with troubled

youth and gang members.

Remember Waldina? You

helped with the cost of con-

struction for a ramp that allowed

her wheelchair access into the

main building. Although Waldina
