Rotary light is shining brightBY DG CAROL BURDETTE

It is amazing how quickly time goes by. The first month of the Rotary year has already come and gone.

I am happy to report to you that I have visited 15 of the 52 clubs. I have been received with gracious hospitality and have seen some “inspirational” evidence that the Rotary light is shining bright in South Carolina. With that being said, there is much work to be done.

I am a very goal oriented individual, and I have set some lofty goals for myself and for the district…why is this? Because as Rotarians we have the opportunity to make a difference, but it takes us being at our best around sharing the gift of Rotary with others in the form of asking them to join, giv-ing to The Rotary Foundation, participating in service projects and promot-ing Rotary’s public image. Doing all of that will also make you eligible for the Governor’s Leadership Society.

Can’t wait to get to your club. DG Carol

CART Challenge at 20%

You saw on the front page of the

newsletter last month that I have

set a high but possible goal for

CART of $100,000 by April 30,

2019. We are already at 20% of

goal. Thanks to those who have

taken me up on my challenge

and the positive responses from

the clubs I have visited.

MESSAGES FROM THE GOVERNOR…SEPT. 20 IN GREENWOOD

Membership Summit will give you ideas to grow your club

For Rotary to be

relevant in the future, we

must continue to grow our

clubs; therefore, membership

is the top priority for the

year. To fill your toolbox with

ideas of how to grow your

membership, please join me

at the Membership Summit

on September 20th in

Greenwood, SC. Details for

registration are on DACdb.

This is not just for club

presidents, president-elects

and membership chairs, but

for every Rotarian in the

district. I want us to have a

full-house, it will help our

effectiveness. You will not

want to miss it.

MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: JUNE FIGURES

These figures are from the District and Club database and are not official RI numbers. These are for June. Final year-end figures are still being compiled by RI.

Greer club was impetus for woman from UK joining RotaryBY WANDA K. MOORE Rotary Club of Greater Greer

Cate Whitewood, immediate past president of the Tintinhull, Somersett Rotary Club in England, spoke at the Rotary Club of Greater Greer, recognizing the club for being the stimulus she needed to join the club in England.

Cate had attended the Greer club over the years when she was visiting her upstate friend, club member Robin Johnson. She enjoyed the Greer club’s fellowship, its family atmosphere, learning what Rotary was all about, and hearing about the various projects of the club.

She says that Rotary International’s “Service Above Self” became her own personal adopted motto, and that she hoped she exemplified it during her presidential year.

Cate reviewed with the Greer club some of the highlights of her year as president in England, especially those which involved helping others, such as: Raising funds for local town of Yeovil’s Food Bank at Christmas, packing school bags, fundraising for Kids Out (to be able to take

disadvantage children to a fun park), supporting the Purple Community Fund to help children out of poverty, supporting financially the Children’s Hospice South West , supplying the Primary School in Tintinhull with a dictionary for each student.

England’s District 1200 International Projects has so far funded six wells. She gave a brief presentation at the meeting on the well project: “Choices: Clean or Dirty Water.”

Other recent speakers at Greer have included former State Senator Lewis Vaughn, National Director of the Korean War Veterans Association, who spoke on the Korean War Memorial; and Cecelia Rodriquez and Austin Barrett with the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) who spoke on ”The Fight to End Homelessness.”

THE ROTARY CLUB OF GREATER

GREER has changed its weekly meetings

from breakfast to lunch which seems to

anticipated to attract new members. The

club meets on Tuesdays from 12:30 – 1:30

p.m. in the private dining room of Wild Ace

Pizza in downtown Greer.

Who’s a member of a Fellowship or RAG? Let Barbara knowBY BARBARA SHAYEB-HELOU, [email protected] Fellowship and RAGS Chair

I have a big thank you to the Rotary Club of Rock Hill for inviting me to speak about Rotary Action Groups and Fellowships. Nobody got sick or fell asleep. See —inviting me to your club could provide an interesting and entertaining meeting.

I am still looking for

Rotarians in our District who are members of a Fellowship or RAG who can share their stories with me and others in 7750.

Rotary has had a Peace Corps partnership in the USA. Please view Peace Fellow Summer Lewis in her Ted Talk(via YouTube). She explains how Rotary partners to create pockets of Peace . I originally met this woman at the Rotary International

Convention in Sydney. She is very focused, looks for more in life by assisting others.

A member of the Peace Fellowship, Mark Zober from Israel was in the Peace Corps from 1995-99.At that time he was one of 24 Peace Corps volunteers in Mongolia. Today we have 1,275 Peace Corp volunteers there. How the world has changed.

GREATER ANDERSON MAKES INTERACT ADVISOR PAUL HARRIS FELLOW

The Rotary Club of Greater Anderson presented a Paul Harris Fellow to Sarah Rinker, the Interact Club Advisor for T. L. Hanna High School.

Greater Anderson wholly supports Sarah's efforts, and the club's board approved making the award from club points, to include every member in giving the award.

In the past year, Sarah received Teacher of the Year recognition for her work with AP level classes, and is doing outstanding work with Interact—getting students involved and leading them through fund raising and service projects —including Rise Against Hunger (13,000 meals packed) and Lights of Hope (largest group participating).

Sarah's parents attended the presentation, and Sarah's mom Nancy is a past president and member of the Rotary Club of Winchester, VA,and was honored to pin her daughter. Sarah's father, Dudley, is a member of the Lions Club. Both are Paul Harris Fellows.

Sarah Rinker receives her Paul Harris Fellow. Her mother Nancy, a Rotarian from Virginia, was present to give Sarah her Paul Harris pin; and she gets a big hug from her dad, Dudley.

Alan Swavely, a T. L. Hanna Interact Club member, rising senior, and 2018 RYLA participant attended the meeting at which Sarah was recognized.

Trip to Haiti planned for OctoberPartners in Literacy Haiti is sponsoring a trip to the

Central Plateau of Haiti in October. Haitian native Marie Flore Chipps, who has been in our district often, will host, and DG Carol Burdette will participate. The dates are Oct. 18-23 with the option to stay until Oct. 28.

Traveling to Haiti’s Central Plateau offers an opportunity to do good work and

see beautiful settings. We will tour artistic and historic sites in Port au Prince, then ride up-country through mountains and villages along Route #3, the National Highway, com-pleted in 2012 by the European Union. The route passes through Mirebalais, a growing city, and alongside the pristine mountains surrounding Lake Péligre.

We will visit the libraries Partners in Literacy Haiti has started and meet the children they serve. As time permits, we’ll visit the PILH Cange Library and the Artisan House founded by Jackie Williams (e-club member) and the farms and technical school established and run by Charles (Greenviile Club) and Giullaine Warne.

Greenville Evening presents checks to 2018 Duck Derby grant recipients

The 14th Annual Reedy Falls Duck Derby accomplished a new record this year: All 10,000 yellow ducks were adopted for the first time. This meant that the Rotary Club of Greenville Evening raised more than $70,000 to distribute among the grant recipients. They were able to add to this amount with some matching grants from Rotary District 7750. Grants were awarded at the club’s meeting on July 24.

One of the initiatives of Governor Carol for this year is to “Be an Inspiration” to improve the name recognition on the Rota-ry brand. Part of this effort is yo expand the use of Rotary custom license plates.

It is easy and inexpensive to carry the Rotary brand on a vehicle that is licensed in our state. There is a simple form to com-plete and a cost of $50 for the initial plate and a lesser cost each additional year. If you are driving a truck, the fee is slightly higher. Note that this fee is in addition to the normal fees.

For complete details, go to Rotary7750.org/document/rota-ry-license-plates. While you are on the computer reading this, would be a good time to look at the very simple form!!

If you have any questions,

email [email protected]. There is more information coming including a contest between clubs and maybe some fun activities and fellowship included.

Whether you are driving a sporty Z4, being admired by Sarah Mansbach, Rita Yarbrough and Carol Burdette, or a pick-up, the Rotary license tag says a lot about who you are! Get yours now for just a small upcharge to the regular cost of a tag.
