distinction of male students in ipt
TRANSCRIPT
Introduction
The numbers of the male students entering the public institution of higher
learning (IPTA) has been decrease every year. Every university in this country
faced the same problem. Nowadays, in this late 10 years, this problem has
become a doctrine and become an unpopular issue to be discussed. This issue
should be solved long time ago in order to help the country to be successful.
Vice Chancellor of Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Prof. Dr. Aminah
Ayob said that unexpectedly in the technical field including engineering, it also
has been dominated by the women students instead of male students in all the
university. For the education field, almost 70% was controlled by the women
students. The small numbers of male students do not only happened in UPSI
and in education field only, but expand to the other university in other field like
technical and professional.
During the registration day, we can see that all the university were full
with the people with “baju kurung”, skirt and blouse, sari, and other female
clothes. There only a few of them wearing shirt and slack. This shows that the
numbers of male students than female students are less. Efforts should be done
in order to motivated the remaining male students who are successfully get the
place in IPTA to be more prominent and well-known in IPTA. They should
practice to be the leader and how to organize some organization. Therefore, in
there will be the future leader of the country that can lead our country.
1
If this phenomenon is not solved soon, it will affect the future of our
country. Extinction phenomenon will give major implications for religion,
socio-economic and psychological community, especially the family, because
usually men are the head of the family. Besides, it gives a long-term impact on
the country and society.
2
The number of students register for 2010/2011 session also show the
same result with female students 61750 or 58.6% from 105,377 students who
registered in this session. This shows that number of male students is 43627 or
41.4% which is almost 2:1 rate.

In the university level, at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia female students still
dominated the number of students registered for this new batch. Number of
female students is 2471 or 68% from 2635 students. The difference between
number of male and female students is very big. Male students only have 164
which show a very small number compare to female students. The large number
of difference frightened that in the future there will be no more male students in
the university. Although there is some university show that male students more
than female students, the difference is very small that 55% male students and
45% female students.

Other information from the ministry of higher education is about the
statistic of students registered is in the first degree. Number of students who get
the offer is 40,506 with female 26,229 and percentage 64.8%.

The totals of female students get the offer for education programme after
Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) also more than male students. Only
25.2 % or 14,277 of male students get the offer. For programme after SPM, only
41.55% or 15,333 male student get the offer. According to ministry of higher
education, the offer given to female students is more than to male students for
every race for both level of education.
The domination of registration of students to the IPTA parallel to the
number of students applied which also show the big difference in the number of
students applied. According to ministry of higher education, about 67% or
41,046 from the total 61,228 application form receive is from the female
students. This number is one times of the male students. Furthermore, numbers
4
of students applied for 2010 increase compare to the last year 40,886 also more
than male students who applied about one times, 20141 from male students.
The charts above show the number of students applied for the after SPM

For the first degree programme, 65.7 % of Malay students are female, 61.8% of
Chinese are female and 65.4% of Indians and others are female. This statistics
can be clearly being seen in the charts below. The number of male students still
is less than female students. The same pattern can be seen in all races. The big
differences can be seen for Malay and Indians. For Chinese, the differences are
less than the other two although number of female is more than male.

The extinction of male students has been happened during the secondary
school. From the report of Malaysia Planning 10th (RMKe10), in 2008 the
enrolment of students after secondary school is dominated by female.
According to statistics, 65.9% is female while male is 34.1%. In addition, the
RMKe10 reported that the total of first degree holder was dominated by female
with 62.3% while male with 37.7%.
According to civilization statistics in 2005, the data show that the male
with age 0 to 14 years old is higher than female. The total of male is 3.777
billion while female is 3.554 billion. This showed that the male is 0.223 billion
or 223,000 more than female. This statistic was considered because the group of
students who studied in the IPTA now was 3 to 6 years old at that time. After 15
years, that group of people are studying in the IPTA, but the total of female is
more than male. So, where is the male actually?

The bar charts above showed the number of students registering to IPTA
according to the level and gender. The levels of education are PhD, graduated,
post graduated, under graduated, diploma and others. The statistics were
arranged according to the IPTAs’ in Malaysia. The IPTA that has been observed
is Universiti Malaya(UM), Universiti Sains Malaysia(USM), Universiti
Kebangsaan Malaysia(UKM), Universiti Putra Malaysia(UPM), Universiti
Teknologi Malaysia(UTM), Universiti Utara Malaysia(UUM), Universiti Islam
Antarabangsa Malaysia(UIAM), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak(UNIMAS),
Universiti Malaysia Sabah(UMS), Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris(UPSI),
Universiti Teknologi Mara(UiTM), Universiti Darul Iman(UDM), Universiti
Sains Islam Malaysia(USIM), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu(UMT),
Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia(UTHM), Universiti Teknologi
Melaka(UTeM), Universiti Malaysia Pahang(UMP), Universiti Malaysia
Perlis(UNIMAP), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan(UMK), Universiti Pertahanan
Nasional Malaysia(UPNM).
The observation was done according to gender. From the chart 1, the
number of female students registering to IPTA is more than male students. The
pattern is same for all university in Malaysia. Although there are some
university such as UTM, UDM, UTeM, UMP, UNIMAP, and UPNM have
more male students than female, but the difference is very small. The difference
can be clearly seen in the chart 1. The university like UM, USM, UPM, UKM,
16
UUM, UIAM, and UPSI, the difference is very high between male and female
students.
In the PhD level, the number of male students is more than female
students. The pattern is the same for all university. From the observation, male
students is more than female students is due to male students have high
motivation to further their study in higher level of education. While, female
students only satisfied with undergraduates’ level. Not many female students
are willingly to further their study in PhD level. Only small numbers of female
further their study to higher level.
Otherwise, the number of female in the level like graduated, post
graduated, undergraduate and diploma are higher than male students. The
number of students is high due to female students is hardworking and willing to
success in future life. Female students also wanted to have the better career in
the future in order to live in comfortable life. Besides, the results obtain by
female students is better than male students during the SPM level and during
undergraduate level. So, the chances for the female students to further their
study are very high.
In addition, male students are preferred in technical fields rather than
sciences field. This pattern can be seen in the bar charts below. The number of
male students is more than female students in the technical field but less than
female in the sciences field. In the university like UPSI, UMP, UNIMAP and
17
UPNM, there is no registration in the sciences field. While the registration at
other university like UM, USM, UKM, UPM and others is very high. The chart
show that number of female students is more than male students who register in
sciences field. The differences are very high and we can see clearly in the chart
below. The number of male is almost half of the female especially in the UiTM,
UKM, UPM, UM, UMT, USM and UM.
Otherwise, in the technical field, the numbers of male students are more
than female students. The difference is quite far in the university like UTM,
UMP, UNIMAP, and UTeM. There are a lot of technical programme in this
university like engineering, and others. Therefore, there are more male students
than the female students in that university. Although the number of male
students is more than female students, but the differences are not very big
compare to the sciences field.
The reasons why male students is more than female student in the
technical field are male students have better psychomotor skills compare to
female students. Male students can learn practically better than academically.
Male students also cannot concentrate in the lecture longer than female. They
also cannot memorise all the theory because they love to learn practically. In the
technical field, most of the class are done practically. So, that is why male
students prefer technical more than sciences.
18
In addition, male students are not interested in the field that require
memorising technique. While, female students like to memorise, elaborate and
explain. Those are the natural attitude of female. The educational system in
Malaysia also gives benefits to female students. The systems needs the students
to be good in memorising, elaborating and explaining the theory rather than
practically. Female students are good in academically compared to practically.
That is why male students prefer technical field rather than sciences field. We
can see in the bar chart that percentage of male student is more than female
students in the technical field.

Besides, female students are more diligences and systematic compare to male.
Female students like to arrange their notes, books, and tutorials accordingly so
that, the notes can be easily found when needed. They also like to do their own
notes with colourful pens in order to make it easier to remember. Otherwise,
male students do not know where they keep the notes when they need them.
According to Prof Madya Dr Azahari Ismail who has been interviewed
Bernama said that the curriculum system of education of this country is come
from the West Country that was more conducive to female students who are
more hardworking and systematic. In 1800, the educational system of the
country at west side was created to fulfil the people needs that were dominated
by men at that time. There is also the organization to balance the gender in the
education that was created by female academician at that time. Begin from that
time; the educational system was changed to help female students in education.
According to Dr Azahari who was also the director that design the
unemployed graduated students programme, the performance of male and
female students in education in America was balanced due to the “judaeo-
christian, frontier mentality and individualism” that still strong which stress the
male students to study hard. The number of students in the university also
balanced because the performance of each gender is balanced.
Otherwise in Malaysia, the educational system was changed because
many academicians in 30 to 40 years ago studied in America. So that the system
20
was changed according to the way they studied there. While the traditional
value in this country was not strong that causes many male students lost their
identity. Male students also lazy and do not study hard to get the best
performance. That is why he said that the extinction phenomenon is worst and
the America was facing the same problem after 40 years.
Besides, other reason that causes the extinction of male students in IPTA
is due the changed in family institution to “nuclear family” (family with father,
mother and child). Before this, there are grandfather that can give informal
lesson from the fairy tales to the grandchildren while the parents going to work.
Therefore the child will have strong identity and they will not confuse.
In addition, according to Dr. Azahari, the male’s communication habits
depends on movement and the used of visual and graphic effect in learning.
Oral lessons cannot help male students during learning because they need
informal lesson in order to increase their understanding level. Formal lessons
only help female students in learning process.
Other reason why male students cannot succeed in education is because
of the economy problem in family. For instant, in the poor family the son have
to stop study in order to find some money to buy food and other needs of his
family. The elder brother of the family will be responsible to find some income
to the family especially if the father has died. Dr. Azahari said that the son is
better to find some income to the family rather than study in the system that
21
gives more benefits to female. This opinion has been support by Iranian student;
Katrin Shamshiri. She said that the same phenomenon had happened in her
country because there are no guaranteed to get any job after graduated. She also
said that the women in her country study hard to get the prestige and respect so
that, they can choose their own future husband.
Besides, other reasons that can be discussed are the lack of site of study
in the house. In the big town, the house like apartment and flat which are small
give the not conducive place for study and doing revision. So, for boys who
need some individual spaced get the chances to go out loafing with friends.
Therefore the suggestion is to build the low cost house with at least four rooms
to give enough spaced for parents, daughters, sons and guest.
Dr Azahari also said that mentality of the parents nowadays has changed
because a degree does not guarantee their child to get good job. The proved can
be seen that there are many unemployed graduated students in this country. He
suggested that all the teachers and lecturers must learn the sociology and
psychology knowledge in order to change the mentality of the students. The
Islamic value must be the contents in the philosophy of education. The thinking
style of university students should be changed that education is not only to get
the better job in the future. In Islam, the importance of learning is not only to
get the job, but it was compulsory. Actually, we have misunderstanding the
concept that education is just to get the better job and to be rich.
22
In a class at the university, the number of students is 30. 70 percent from
the students is female and the rest is male. Unfortunately, there is also no male
in some classes. This phenomenon gives the chances to the female students to
say that many men are in the rehabilitation centre. It is true that many men are
majority in there. Therefore many male students say that the educational system
in this country is not practical and suitable to the style of study of male students.
The lecturer at the psychology and human development faculty of UKM,
Roseliza Murni Ab Rahman said that many male students involve in negative
thing like drug addict, gangsters, loafing until ignoring the education process.
When they failed in secondary school, they will not interested in education
anymore and involve in negative items. This issue become worse when a few
male students were trying to act like a woman or in other words “soft man”.
During the primary and secondary level, the students have been trained to
study for the exam. The education system is concentrated on reading and
memorising which is not relevant and not fulfil the interest of male students.
Actually the way of male students study is more to hands on. Therefore, there
are many male students more interested in the technical field like in the skill
institution, Industrial Training Institute (ILP), and Polytechnics. This is proved
by the fact that there are 60 percent male students in the technique and
vocational learning.
23
The extinction of male students in IPTA issue also worried by the Vice
Chancellor of UPSI that the difference between male and female is very big and
that phenomenon has been guessed because in these late five years, the
domination of female in the IPTA is very high. The most surprised is that
nowadays, the domination of male in the technical field including engineering
in the IPTA is decreasing and was dominated by female. The ratio of male and
female is balanced.
Although there is fact that number of male in this country is less than
female can be considered as the factor of extinction of male in the IPTA, but
there are also other reason that related to this problem. The number of male in
social problem is small compare to the number of people in this country which
is 26 billion.
In addition, the people opinion about female should have the career that
can spend much time with family and children can be the reason why there are
many female students in the IPTA. Therefore, many female student studies hard
to get the placed in the university so that they could have the job that is more to
academic like teachers, doctors, pharmacist and others.
The extinction of male students in IPTA should be aware by all the
people in this country. This is because it can give many bad effects to our
country if it is not solved immediately. There are long time effect and short time
effect that caused by this phenomenon.
24
One of the effects is the worker in this country will be dominated by
female and the male will stay at home. Although we know that number of
unemployed graduated female is more than male, but if there is no male in that
field the company do not have any choice to hire the female as their staff. If the
women be the workers, there will be lots of problem. Women cannot hold an
organization because she will be affected by emotion according to the
physiology factor of the female.
Nowadays, in government institution, there are many female workers
than male workers. Almost 70% of the workers in some professions like
teachers are female and the rest are male. This phenomenon is bad because it
can give bad effect to the government institution in the future. According to the
physiology and psychology of female, there are a lot of problem that women
will faced that prevent them to work. Such problems are, when they pregnant,
they will not able to do hard work because they will be feeling not well.
Besides, during giving birth, they need longer break about two month in order
to be healthy again. So, there will be many works that hesitate in the office and
the process will be unmoved.
In addition, many people said that they are easier to work with man
because they are more creative and flexible. Besides, they also not too rigid
with the rules that will make some works need longer time to be finished.
Therefore, when doing business with man, the work will finish in a short time.
25
Besides that, the effect can be seen in the school that the discipline
problems increase due to the less male teachers in the school. The students do
not feel afraid of the female teachers because they thought that female teacher
cannot do anything to them. They feel that female teachers are weak. Therefore,
they can break the rule easily in school. If there are male students in the school,
they will be afraid to do bad things.
Besides that, if the numbers of male and female teachers in school are
balanced, the education institution will be more efficient. This is because the
productivity of male and female teachers is difference as same as the impact.
That is why when they work together the institution of education will be
excellent.
There are academicians said that this phenomenon has been happened in
all around the world and cannot be avoided and should be worried. But, there
are also a few people said that this phenomenon is new in these last two decade
and not good for the future because the effect are not understand enough by the
people. This problem has been debated among the people in this country. In the
debates, the male participant and academician give the opposites opinion based
on their emotional and their gender. The male participants look worried about
this problem but the female participants defend that this problem should be
worried.
26
This problem should be discussed in the right way. The people should
open their mind when discussing about this problem because it includes the fate
of our future generation. This includes the problem to find the right future
husband that has the same level of academics, the role of wife and husband in
family institution, the happiness of the family and the married-divorce problem.
All this thing could be the big problem if the extinction of male students in the
IPTA did not solved quickly. The people cannot be emotional in discussing this
problem according to gender because in the family, there will be boys and girls
as the children. Their futures are the important thing to be thought.
In a family, men as a father should be the leader of the family who is
strong and great in everything. The succession of someone is based on the
certificates that he or she gets. So if the performances of female are better than
male, it will make a new problem. The phenomenon useless and powerless
husband will appear. When the job of the wife is higher than the husband, the
husband will feel powerless to talk much or to train the wife to be the better
person. So that, the family institution will unhappy.
In the big city, there are many women said that it is hard to find the right
guy as their husband. So that, they are not married until there are old. The total
of these kinds of people is high nowadays. We know that this phenomenon is
not good and the effect will be not normal in the generation. For example, the
number of future generation will be decrease and the number of old folks will
27
be increase. In the next generation there will be only old folk and there are less
young generation who can lead the country.
The lecturer of the education and psychology counselling department of
UM, Prof, Madya Dr. Haslee Sharil Abdullah said that the number of female is
more than male in IPTA showed many questions and implications. He said that,
the answer to the question must be sought from the empirical research in macro.
The product of the research can answer the question why female more than
male in IPTA and be the basic information in designing the intervention
programme to balance the gender.
He also said that, many women give their good works in productivity of
economy in filling the job at many level and sector. But, if this problem was not
overcome quickly, it will give other bad implication to the future of our country.
Therefore, to overcome the imbalanced gender in IPTA, the male should aware
and try to change their habits to fight with great things of female.
The less number of male workers can be overcome by any ways. Firstly,
the hiring system should not base on computer which only looked in academic
performance only. The system should be change into the system that can test the
candidates in many ways. The interview session can be done in order to see the
skills and other aspects of workers that needed by the company. By this way,
the ratio of gender will be balance because we believe that many males in this
country are applicable.
28
The male students who are taking certificates and diploma level can
increase the level of performance by studying level by level. Although it takes
longer time compare to ordinary way, it is not too late to fight and being at the
same level with female.
Besides, the male at the first degree level should strengthen their
economy by doing other job like involving in entrepreneur. They can open a
shop or try to do online selling to get much money. In other words, he should
maintain the source of economy in order to married and have own family. The
women nowadays want to find the men with strong source of economy as their
husband in order to have the guaranteed life in the future. Either agrees or not,
the life nowadays and in the future needs lots of money to be used in all
activities as a human being.
Other way to overcome this problem is, to increase the education in
technique and vocational field. If male students do not interested in sciences
field, then they can enter the institution that they interested. Maybe, in the field
that they interested like in technical and vocational, they can be succeeding
well. They will also learn about skills that suitable with their interest.
There many bad thing that has been said about the missing of male
students in IPTA. Such things are, they are many in rehabilitation centre, in jail
and others. We cannot change about what happen to these kinds of people. But,
we should do something that can help to make the little group that are
29
applicable to enter the IPTA and other education institution to be the role model
for the others. The a few male students in the IPTA should active to be the
leader in some organization.
There is the bad attitude about the male students in IPTA that is to be the
backbenchers. Backbenchers are the people who like to sit at the back during
the lectures or classes. Although they come to the class early, they will sit at the
back too. They will sit at as back as they can. The reasons why the sit at the
back are at the back they can sleep, do not being ask, and they can easily get out
from the classes.
Although there are some backbenchers success in education and obtain
best result, but the majority of them always get the medium result only or the
worst they will get failed. Sometimes, the knowledge that given by the lecturers
is not received due to the voice cannot be heard, the distance is very far. They
also do not ask questions if they do not understand. Therefore they will always
left behind and cannot be excellent in the exam.
The rate of decreasing of male students in IPTA is very fast from year to
year. Dr. Azahari suggested that, a new special organization should be built at
the national level in order to experiment and to find the solution to this
phenomenon. According to him, this is not the effort to develop the women, but
the important is to make sure that male students will not decrease and give
negative effects to the country.
30
There is people said that the application to the IPTA using the
system that based on the merit is one of the reasons why many male students
not applicable to study in IPTA. Although there is suggestion to use the quota
system to increase the number of male in IPTA, but that is not the best way to
solve this problem. The success of female should make the male students to
study harder to fight in the right way.
Although the number of male students is less than female students in the
IPTA, the government does not agree with the suggestion to set the quota for
undergraduate entry that would enable more male students to enter university to
overcome the gender imbalance of undergraduate entry. Other efforts have been
done to create awareness among male students on IPTA entry through
educational programme, seminars and forum, exhibition and outreach
programme.
During secondary school, female students outperform male students
resulting in more female students getting a place in the undergraduate studies in
the IPTA. There is suggestion to change the examination-oriented curriculum to
a more coursework based curriculum. Besides, the overall performance is more
important to be looked at rather than just academic when choosing students.
Hopefully the condition for IPTA entry that is 90% academic achievement and
10% co-curriculum could overcome the gender imbalance in the IPTA.
31
Conclusion
This issue should be worried by all the people in this country especially
the men because men should be the leader in everything. So, they need to be
motivated to fight with the success of the women. As the leader, the men should
be more powerful and great than the women. A woman as we all know is weak
and need male to help and guard.
Although it is not wrong for the women to be the leader, but the best
person are men. There are some countries that lead by woman as the prime
minister. The men should feel ashamed that being rule by women who are
weaker than them. Luckily, it is not happen in our country. But, the programme
to increase the number of male in IPTA and other institution must be done in
order to have the better leader in the future.
In Islam, men should be the leader to the women. They should show the
right way to the women and teach them to be the kind person in all aspects. In a
family, the husband or father is responsible to teach his wife and children to be
the better person in order to have the happiness in the family. He also needs to
have much knowledge about religion, and the way of life in this world. Male
have many advantages than female. The failed in lead the family will make the
family become damaged. This also can lead to the social problem among the
teenagers. The husband did not have the power to teach his wife to be kind and
to teach his children to avoid any social problem.
32
In this problem, the husband should not be low self esteem, because as
the husband and the leader of the family, he has the power to teach his family in
order to be the kind and live as the right Muslims. Therefore, men as the leader
of the family should increase their effort in order to have higher level of
education than the women in order for the family have respect.
The extinction of male student in the universities is the important
problem that must be solved by the government. In UKM, the percentage of the
female students is 70 % and the male students are 30 % in 2007. If in 2007, the
ratio in like this, what will happen in 2020? Are there any male students in the
IPTA?
Nowadays, there are many other placed that can be studied by the male
students like in Polytechnics KPTM. It is one of the IPTA that was built to born
a half professional graduated student in engineering, economy, hospitality and
fashion. There are certificates and diploma level can be obtained in this
institution that could help in government and non-government sector. There are
20 Polytechnics in this country that could give the place for the male students
who are interested in technical field. Therefore, there is still place for the male
students to study although they cannot have the place in the university.
33
Figure 1
Figure 1 above show the illustration about the scenario that will happen
if the wife goes to work and the men leave at home to take care of the child. In
Islam, this kind of scenario is bad because the man as the husband should work
to find the money for the family. It is also wrong for the man to just stay at
home and wait for his wife to work to get money in order to but the living
needs. Besides, in the al-Quran and Hadith there is mentions that the man
responsible for giving the maintenance cost of living.
34
Figure 2
In the above picture (Figure 2), we can see that there are many female
students registering to the IPTA. There are a few male students can be seen in
the picture. The same phenomenon had happened in all university. So we can
conclude that there are more female students than male students in IPTA.
35
Figure 3
The above picture (Figure 3) was taken at 14th College of UPM on the
first day of registration. There are a lot of people can be seen in the picture and
most of them are female. The same thing can be seen in the figure 4 which is
female students are more than male students.
