Problem Solving
Objective:
• Describe Motion
• Calculate Displacement & Velocity
• Create Graphs/Interpret Velocity
How can we describe motion?
• One dimensional motion is the simplest form of motion
• Motion takes place over time
• We need a frame of reference to evaluate motion
What is a Frame of Reference?
• A Point at which you can measure changes in position.
• A system for specifying the precise location of objects in space and time
What is displacement?
• Change in Position
Displacement = Final position – Initial Position
∆X = Xf - Xi
Key Concepts
• Displacement is not always equal to the distance traveled(See Page 42)
• Displacement can be positive or negative
• Demonstration
What is Velocity?
• motion that includes a direction and numerical value
• Average Velocity – displacement /time interval
• Instantaneous Velocity – velocity of an object at some specific point
Average Velocity & Displacement
• Formula
Average Velocity = Change in Position(displacement) change in time(time interval)
