INTRODUCTION
In Hawaii, ginger is a specialty cropthat produces excellent cash returns inspite of serious losses due to disease andinsect problems. It is estimated that athreefold increase in production is possible with effective disease control. Areduction of production costs by eliminating diseases would make Hawaiianginger more competitive in the market.Important also is the fact that diseasefree rhizomes can be stored for longer
periods, and thus can be marketed duringperiods when market prices are higher.
The purpose of this circular is todescribe the common diseases of gingerand to discuss their possible controls. Inthe preparation of this circular, all theavailable pertinent information and publications of this and other experimentstations have been consulted. Acknowledgment is made of the use of such information.
THE CROP
Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) isa fibrous-rooted perennial plant withbranched underground stems called rhizomes. The above-ground portion of theplant consists of several aerial shootswhich are about 3 feet tall. The plant isindigenous to the tropics and susceptibleto frost injury. In Hawaii the temperatures are cool enough during Decemberand January to induce both rhizomedormancy and death of the foliage. Therefore, the crop is planted in late winter orearly spring and harvested in the wintermonths. Because ginger does not produce

true seeds, portions of the undergroundrhizome weighing from 1 to 4 ouncesknown as Hseed-pieces" are used for planting material. The cost of planting material is high and growers usually savesome of the best portions of a crop for((seed."
Continuous recropping of the sameland is common in Hawaii. This, combined with the use of planting materialsaved from the previous year, has contributed to the build-up of a number ofdisease-producing organisms which havebecome destructive in many areas.
THE DISEASES
Plant diseases are of two general types,parasitic and nonparasitic. The parasiticdiseases are caused by living organismswhich subsist in whole or in part on theplant, thereby making the natural development of the plant impossible. Thesediseases are caused by fungi, bacteria,viruses, and nematodes. Nonparasiticdiseases are caused by unfavorable environmental conditions such as drought,temperatures unfavorable for plantgrowth, and nutrient deficiencies or excesses in the soil.

Parasitic Diseases
Bacterial Wilt
Bacterial wilt of ginger is a very destructive, parasitic disease and has beenreported from most areas of Hawaii whereginger is grown commercially.
The first symptoms of wilt are a slightyellowing and wilting of the lower leaves.The wilt progresses upward, affecting theyounger leaves, followed by a completeyellowing and browning of the entireshoot. Under conditions favorable fordisease development, the entire shootbecomes flaccid and wilts with little or novisible yellowing. However, the plantdries very rapidly and the foliage becomes yellow-brown in 3 to 4 days (fig.1 ) . Young succulent shoots frequentlybecome soft and completely rotted andthese diseased shoots break off easily fromthe underground rhizome at the soil line.The underground parts are also completely infected. Grayish-brown discoloration of the rhizomes may be localized ifthe disease is at an early stage of infection, or discoloration may be general ifthe disease is in an advanced stage. Awater-soaked appearance of the centralpart of the rhizome is common. In advanced infections, the entire rhizome becomes soft and rots. Bacterial wilt ofginger can be distinguished from otherrhizome rots of ginger by the conditionof the rhizome and the foliage. A betterdiagnostic feature is the extensive bacterial ooze that shows as slimy, creamyexudate on the surface of a cut made inthe rhizome or on the above-ground stemof an infected plant (fig. 2).
The bacterial wilt of ginger is causedby a strain of Pseudomonas solanacearum.The strain of the bacteria attacking gingerwill weakly attack tomato, pepper, and

eggplant (3J 5). Although laboratory testshave shown that the strain that causessevere tomato wilt does not attack ginger,a relationship between the strains of thebacteria does exist. Although relationships may be of little importance to thegrower, there is a possibility that underfield conditions, the tomato strain couldbe severe on ginger and the ginger strainsevere on crops belonging to the tomatofamily. Thus, it is highly undesirable toplant either crop in a field in which theother had been diseased.
The bacterium that causes this diseaseis soil-borne and also may be carried ininfected rhizomes. There is also a possibility that some of the insects that feedon the diseased ginger foliage or rhizomecould be vectors of the bacteria if theylater feed_ on healthy plants. Commonly,bacterial wilt can be spread from diseasedto healthy rhizomes with the knife usedto cut the rhizomes into seed-pieces.

New soil can be contaminated with thebacteria by use of contaminated farmequipment or by irrigation water flowingthrough infested soil.
Fusarium Yellows and Rhizome Rot
Fusarium yellows is probably the mostserious problem of ginger because it hasbecome more widely spread than bacterial wilt. It has been found in mostcommercial plantings in the State ofHawaii. Plants infected by the fungus,Fusarium oxysporum f. zingiberi, do notwilt rapidly as in bacterial wilt (6). Instead, infected ginger plants are stuntedand yellowed. The lower leaves dry outover an extended period of time (fig. 3).
It is common to find yellow, stuntedabove-ground shoots among apparentlyhealthy green shoots. The plant finallydries out as the fungus invades the entirevascular system of the undergroundrhizomes.
The rhizomes show a creamy browndiscoloration of the water-conducting portion of the rhizome and a prominent blackdry rot of the tissues of the cortex (theportion outside of water-conductingtissues) (fig. 4). The rhizomes do not
. become soft and water-soaked as in bacterial wilt, and when cut they do not oozebacterial slime (fig. 5).
The disease may start in the seedpiece originally planted; also, it has beenobserved that the fungus can readily invade wounded healthy seed planted ininfested soiL As the rot advances intonewer rhizome sections, the cortex showssunken areas. This is especially noticeableon infected rhizomes in storage.

Fusarium oxysporum f. zingiberi is afungus that can be carried in infectedrhizomes. The fungus also produces resting structures ( chlamydospores ) in thedecomposing tissues of infected rhizomes.Therefore, tissues from infected cropsremaining in the field serve as a reservoirof the fungus. Once a ginger field becomes infected, the fungus can remain inthe soil for many years. Ginger harvestedfrom fields contaminated with the Fusarium yellows fungus may be infected andthe fungus will continue to destroy therhizome tissues in storage. This is a dryrot characterized by collapse of the corticaltissues, occasionally accompanied by apurpling of the infected areas of therhizome, and a white cottony mycelialgrowth on the cut surfaces of gingerpieces.
Root-knot Nematode
Ginger rhizomes can be severely infected with Meloidogyne incognita, theroot-knot nematode. The nematode affects the market quality of the crop veryseriously but normally does not destroythe rhizomes. This parasite does not formprominent surface galls in ginger rhizomes as it does in other plants, and inginger the external symptoms are usuallymasked. In severe infections the cortexof the rhizomes appears somewhat lumpyand cracked. Apparently when the female nematode reaches maturity, the surface galls break the epidermis of therhizome and the rhizome surface becomescorky in appearance. When the corklayer is peeled off, small, circular, watersoaked, slightly brown lesions are observed (fig. 6). Mature females of thenematode are found in these lesions.These water-soaked areas below the epidermis of the rhizomes are quite numerous in severely infected rhizomes. Thenematode lesions can serve as points ofentry to common bacteria and fungi

which are otherwise unable to invadeuninjured tissues, and the rhizomes maybe destroyed in storage by such organisms. Nematodes such as Meloidogyne sp.are known to invade immature tissuesonly. It is not known how infection of"the ginger rhizome takes place.
Pythium Soft Rot
Pythium graminicolum has been reported as a cause of severe soft rot ofginger in the field (4). The fungus hasbeen reported to be carried in seed-pieces.On Kauai this fungus has been isolatedfrom ginger rhizomes showing soft rot(7). Although this problem was not considered very serious, it is possible thatunder high rainfall and poorly drainedsoil, Pythium soft rot of ginger could be

a problem in Hawaii. The yellowingshown by the affected plants can be confused with symptoms of Fusarium yellowsand with other problems such as mineraldeficiencies. The soft rot caused byPythium does not produce offensive odors,which are characteristic of bacterial rots.
Bacterial Soft Rot
Bacteria of the Erwinia group are sometimes found associated with a type ofsoft rot of ginger encountered in waterlogged fields. The softening of the tissuesis accompanied by the production of astrong odor. The disease is more prevalent in rhizomes that have formed deepin the ground. The sections closer to thesurface are generally healthy. This problem is not found in well-drained soils.
Nonparasitic Diseases
Sunburn
Young ginger plants are very susceptible to sunburn when screen temperaturesexceed 90°F. (Sunburn is not due to hightemperatures but to high light intensity.)Mild sunburn affects only the leaves, but
acute sunburn damages the entire shoot(2). This problem is seldom encounteredin Hawaii. Drought and lack of watermay cause the same effects as sunburn.
Lime-induced Chlorosis
Excessive liming or abundant coralsand in the soil may cause yellowing ofthe blades and poor growth.
CONTROL (MAIN DISEASES)
When the life history of a diseaseproducing organism is known, it is usuallypossible to destroy it or to prevent itsspread. The most serious diseases ofginger are seed- or soil-borne. The seedphase of the diseases may be controlledby seed selection and by application ofthe seed treatments described below. Themost effective means of eradicating thesepathogens from the seed is by a processof seed certification involving ((subculture" of apical shoots in sterile nutrientagar media and propagating such materialin disease-free soil. However, this methodof seed certification is a costly operationthat cannot be handled by small growers.
The soil-borne phase of these diseasesmay be controlled by soil sterilization orsoil disinfection.
Seed Selection
Because certified or inspected seed isnot available to protect the grower frombacterial wilt, Fusarium yellows, root-knotnematodes, and possibly Pythium soft rot,the grower must be careful about thesource of seed he plants. He must befamiliar with the symptoms of each majordisease and avoid saving seed fromdiseased plants.
After a careful selection of apparentlyhealthy seeds, a hot-water treatment

may be applied to eliminate root-knotnematodes ( fig. 7) . The temperaturemust be carefully controlled and the ginger should be completely dormant, otherwise germination of the seed will bereduced. The temperature should be keptat a constant 122°F. Treatment for 10minutes at this temperature eliminatesthe nematodes from the tissues (6). Thehot-water treatment is ineffective againstP. solanacearum, the bacterial wilt organism, and F. oxysporum f. zingiberi, theFusarium yellows organism, when thesepathogens are inside the vascular tissuesof the seed-pieces. The seed can besurface-disinfected after cutting by dipping the ginger in a 10% Clorox solutionfor 10 minutes (use 1 part of commercialClorox to 9 parts of water). Other materials such as panogen, PMA (phenylmercuric acetate), etc., could be used ifthe seed pieces are discarded at harvesttime; these materials have not beencleared by the United States Food andDrug Administration.
Soil Fumigation
Fusarium yellows of ginger in the soilcan be effectively controlled with a methylbromide-chloropicrin 2: 1 mixture at 450to 600 pounds per acre under polyethylenetarping (7). This mixture, with trade

names such as Dowfume MC-33, Pathofume, etc., is also good as a nematocide,an herbicide, or a bactericide. Preliminaryfield experiments in an area heavily infested with Fusarium yellows have shownthat if the fumigant is placed at a 9-inchdepth, the disease could be effectivelycontrolled provided disease-free ginger isused for planting material. Other soil fumigation experiments conducted in areasof ginger-free crop history have shownthat disease-free stock planted in suchsoils fumigated with Dowfume MC-33 at450 pounds per acre averaged 10 poundsof healthy ginger rhizomes per plant ascompared to 3 pounds for control plots.Studies made to control the bacterial wiltof ginger with methyl bromide fumigation have shown some promise in labora-
tory trials. Field trials, however, haveshown inconclusive results.
Fumigation of soil should be a standardpractice in ginger production to controlFusarium yellows and root-knot nematodes. Soil fumigation with a materialcomposed of methyl bromide and chloropicrin also offers excellent weed control.Since the control of bacterial wilt withfumigation is less reliable, the growershould avoid the continuous recroppingof the land. Bacterial wilt-infested fieldsshould be placed on rotation using nonsusceptible crops such as cucumbers orsweet corn. Fumigation after a year'srotation may prove more effective. Also,land that had a previous tomato familycrop with bacterial wilt should not beused for ginger production without proper fumigation.

INSECT PESTS
Insect control in ginger is desirablebecause insects may be involved in thespread of diseases, and also because theydamage the foliage and rhizomes. Au(1) listed the following species in orderof importance in Hawaii.
Chinese Rose Beetle
The Chinese rose beetle, Adoretussinicus ( Burm. ), is pale reddish-brownand has nocturnal feeding habits. Thedamage on the foliage is characteristic,being peppered or shot with holes, ormore or less skeletonized. The eggs,which are laid in the soil, hatch in about4 days, and the entire life cycle from eggto adult takes about 6 to 7 weeks. Thelarvae apparently feed on decaying plantmaterial; pupation occurs in the soil.During the daytime, adults are usuallyfound hiding in loose soil or among deadleaves. This species is common at lowelevations.
Fullers Rose Beetle
The Fullers rose beetle, Pantomorusgodmani (Crotch), feeds on a variety ofplants including ginger. The adults are7 to 9 millimeters long, with a short

snout, and are light brownish or grayishin color. The species is more prevalentat higher elevations, apparently requiringcooler temperatures for survival.
Grasshoppers
Ginger leaves are occasionally damagedby grasshoppers. This occurs at timeswhen there is a high population incidenceof these insects.
Scavenger Flies
Several insects breed in decaying planttissues. These include the syrphid fly,Eumerus marginatus (Grims); the otitidscavenger fly, Euxesta quadrivittata(Macq. ); and the sciarid gnat fly. Theimportance of these ins~cts in ginger production remains to be determined. Fieldobservations appear to indicate that thesyrphid fly may be a threat to gingerwhen the crop becomes dormant. Theeggs may be laid on the decaying flowerstalk and the larvae may work their waydown to the healthy rhizome tissues below ground. The tunnels built by thelarvae in healthy rhizome tissues reducethe market value of the crop.
