    Welcome to our January edition...

Happy New Y ear everyone!I for one had a great 2015 and cannot wait to see what 2016 brings (other than more grey hair, more aches and more pains of course!) Winter is my favourite time of the year, crisp, cold, frosty, morning walks with the dogs, strolling hand in hand with the boyfriend, all wrapped up in a warm coat, gloves and scarf (usually Christmas presents!) In my head its quite romantic but from the outside it probably looks more like a scene from a comedy sketch show. Four dogs running around in doggy clothing, me shouting at them to stop rolling in something disgusting with my arms flailing about trying not to slip over and land on my bum whilst wearing five layers of clothing and resembling the Michelin Man. The boyfriend is usually pretending not to be with us and is wandering off taking photos of the pretty scenery on his phone!

Its his favourite time of the year too but not for the above reason......he loves shopping and all the sales are on! Its a great time of year for shoppers so good luck in bargain hunting!

Inside this issue youll find a great recipe from The Spice Bank as well as their latest menu which you can pull out and keep. Weve got a great article on how to keep your new years resolutions as well as the usual mix of regular features. Ill keep you updated on Facebook with any local January events and offers and will see you all in February!

10 Tips to Make Your New Year's Resolution a SuccessMost of us will make a New Year's resolution - maybe to lose weight, quit smoking or drink less - but only one in ten of us will achieve our goal, according to the NHS.

Psychologists have found we're more likely to succeed if, we break our resolution into smaller goals that are specific, measurable and time-based. Professor Richard Wiseman, of the University of Hertfordshire, tracked 5,000 people as they attempted to achieve their New Year's resolutions. His team found that those who failed, tended not to have a plan, which made their resolution soon feel like a mountain to climb. Some focused too much on the downside of not achieving their goal, adopted role models, fantasised about their goal, or relied on willpower alone. "Many of these ideas are frequently recommended by self-help experts, but our results suggest that they simply don't work," says Prof. Wiseman. "If you are trying to lose weight, it's not enough to stick a picture of a model on your fridge or fantasise about being slimmer." He said the 10% of participants in the study who had achieved their target, broke their goal into smaller goals and felt a sense of achievement when they achieved these. "Many of the most successful techniques involve making a plan and helping yourself stick to it," says Prof. Wiseman.

Top 10 goal-setting tipsProf. Wiseman's top ten tips for achieving your New Year's resolution:

    1. Make only one resolution. Your chances of success are greater when you channel energy into changing just one aspect of your behaviour.

    2. Dont wait until New Years Eve to think about your resolution; instead take some time out a few days before, and reflect upon what you really want to achieve.

    3. Avoid previous resolutions. Deciding to revisit a past resolution sets you up for frustration and disappointment.

    4. Dont run with the crowd and go with the usual resolutions. Instead, think about what you really want out of life.

    5. Break your goal into a series of steps, focusing on creating sub-goals that are concrete, measurable and time-based.

    6. Tell your friends and family about your goals. You're more likely to get support and want to avoid failure.

    7. Regularly remind yourself of the benefits associated with achieving your goals by creating a checklist of how life would be better, once you obtain your aim.

    8. Give yourself a small reward whenever you achieve a sub-goal, thus maintaining motivation and a sense of progress.

    9. Make your plans and progress concrete by keeping a handwritten journal, completing a computer spreadsheet, or covering a notice board with graphs or pictures.

    10. Expect to revert to your old habits from time to time. Treat any failure as a temporary setback, rather than a reason to give up altogether.

Winter has arrived! Although it may feel like all you want to do hibernate there are still a few jobs to be done outside to ensure you can spring into action after the season has passed. Most importantly any potted tender plants, trees or shrubs must be moved into a sheltered location. A porch, greenhouse or conservatory are best but a sunny spot against a wall maybe just enough to ensure survival against the frosts. If it is planted or in a pot too heavy to move, heavy duty fleece made into a jacket with canes will help or for pots a complete pot and plant protector can be bought. Made with extra thick fleece and with a zip, it will protect against cold drying winds, allow the water in and ensure delicate pots dont crack.

Sharpen your secateurs there is pruning to be done! Prune your roses and make especially sure to cut back any diseased, dead or damaged growth. Tie back any new shoots to a support being careful to only cut back any older flower shoots to a third of their current height, remember to keep on top of any black spot or mildew as soon as leaf appears in spring. Collect up any leaf mould from the base of your roses which suffered from disease throughout the summer, this will prevent infection next year. Dont compost these leaves, they must be disposed of or burnt.

[email protected] charity worker completes Thames Path ChallengeLorna Hazeltine, who lives in March, has raised an impressive 801 for East Anglias Childrens Hospices (EACH).

44 year-old Lorna, who is the manager at the EACH shop in Whittlesey took part in the Thames Path Challenge in September to raise valuable funds for the charity. She completed the 100km endurance walk, through from Putney Bridge right the way through to Henley, in 30 hours.

Lorna Hazeltine, said: Id never done anything like this before and it certainly was a massive challenge for me! Im so pleased to have completed the route in the time I did, it made all my training worth it. I have worked at EACH for more than four years - I am so passionate about the charity and the care they provide. Some of our regular customers use the charitys services and so I see first-hand the difference it makes to their lives I tried to think about those families to motivate me when I found the challenge tough!

Beccy Gillings, EACH Cambridgeshire Fundraiser, said: Congratulations to Lorna, both for the amazing amount she has raised and for completing this challenge. EACH cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions and supports their families all the money raised will go towards providing these vital services.

Appeal after dog was dragged behind a moving car

The RSPCA is appealing for the publics help to find the people responsible for inflicting shocking wounds on a dog. The tan-coloured crossbreed was found in an awful condition roaming Eastfield Road, in Peterborough, on November 25th. The four-year-old, who was not microchipped and had no ID, was found by a member of the public, and Inspector Justin Stubbs has named him Alfie. He explained, He was very skinny when he was found. Hed clearly been either dragged behind a moving car or thrown from one. The vet was shocked at the level of cruelty Alfie has endured and the pain he will have suffered, but his tail has been slowly beginning to wag. He is such a fantastic dog and so affectionate, I have really fallen for him. He just wants to be loved and despite what hes been through, absolutely adores people. Its really heart-breaking that someone could do this to him so callously.

Alfie had an operation for treatment to bleeding wounds on his feet and legs. The cuts went as deep as the bone but he is expected to make a full recovery and is currently staying in RSPCA boarding kennels.

Were appealing to anyone who recognises him or thinks he may have belonged to a friend or neighbour, Inspector Stubbs added. He has probably been kept outside all his life as he is not house-trained, and we think he may have lived side-by-side with ferrets, as he smelt of them when he was found. If anyone recognises him, or knows of a neighbour who had a similar dog which has recently disappeared, please call the RSPCAs appeal line on 0300 123 8018.

    | Community newsWANTED teams to break out of jail!Grab your arrowed suit and bolt cutters its time to play your get out of jail free card, and escape as far away as you can.

Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice is looking for teams of up to four willing to plan, persuade and blag their way as far from the starting point a cell in Her Majestys Prison Peterborough - as possible in the Jailbreak challenge.

Teams will have no cash and just 24 hours to make their escape. The only good news is that you can start planning your escape as soon as youve signed up and as the very best escapees know planning is everything!

In Thorpe Halls last Jailbreak challenge the winning team reached Malaga in Spain more than 1,000 miles away. But its not just the geography that counts. Teams can rack up extra airmiles by completing challenges on route visiting particular landmarks, picking up souvenirs and snapping selfies.

The doors of the cell will be unlocked at 9.30am on Saturday, February 27. And the race is then on. Which team will be breakfasting at the most far-flung point on Sunday, February 28?

All the money raised in the Jailbreak challenge will help fund incredible care at Thorpe Hall Hospice, in Longthorpe, Peterborough.

To find out more or sign your team up for Jailbreak registration fee is 60 per team - visit the website www.sueryder.org/thorpehall/jailbreak or call the fundraising team on 01733 225999.

Calling all Model Railway Fans! The March and District Model Railway Club meets every Wednesday evening from 7.30pm onwards at The Rookswood Club, Rookswood, 27 Westend, March, PE15 8DP. It aims to bring together, like-minded people with an interest in railways and railway modelling. Several club layouts in various scales are being developed here. Club outings are organised throughout the year, speakers are also invited to give talks on railway related subjects to members and the general public. Members are able to discuss, and seek help and advice on their personal layouts, gaining valuable information from each other regarding modelling. We often take our layouts to open days usually organised by local churches, charity organisations and schools.

  • The third March Christmas Market was held last month and despite the weather, the turnout to the event was fantastic. Every year this event gets bigger and better and the team are already setting their sights on 2016 and how they can build on this years success.

The March Town Events committee responsible for organising this event is chaired by local councillor Jan French and includes local business owners such as Nigel Marsh from Georges and Rob Skoulding from The Cromwell Hotel along with many other March residents and business owners.

With live music, free fair rides, festive food and drinks on sale as well as Christmas gifts and crafts there was plenty to see and do on the day. According from the reports on Facebook, everyone that attended the day both visitors and stall holders had a great day. Roll on 2016..

Lisa Moore from March Town Events said My daughter, Amy Moore, raised a total of 343 for EACH. Even though she was meant to be singing on stage with her school, she felt raising money for such a worthy cause was more important. She spent the rest of the day still in her Elf costume helping Santa in the Grotto. The March Town Events committee is a relatively small group of people that on a purely voluntary basis organise two main events each year. The March Christmas Market and also the St Georges Day Fayre. We are from all walks of life but have the same goal and that is to provide events that the community can enjoy as a whole. It is hoped that gradually more local businesses will get involved, which in turn will allow us to improve and grow these events year on year.

Did I just see Santa? This year saw the first March Santa Run and whilst leading up to the race, due to a number of issues with the proposed course and management of such, there were times we didnt think it would happen on the day however, everything went to plan!

March Mayor Rob Skoulding, had the enviable task of starting the race. Both the fun run and the 5k race were adjudicated by Run Britain meaning many charities close to the runners hearts were able to benefit from the sponsorship money that individuals raised by taking part.

Nigel Marsh from Georges who was key in organising the Santa run said This year was a great first event and using lessons learnt from organising this course, next year, we will aim for an even bigger run with more Santas and more money raised for local charities. We would like to attract runners from outside the area, March has great rail links and the Christmas Market will be a great draw too.

Lizzie Ward ran the Santa run to raise money for The Ferry Project. The Ferry Project is a homelessness charity which started in Wisbech in 1999. It provides life-skills training, education and volunteering opportunities and signposts to partner agencies to help clients with specific needs such as substance abuse, mental health problems and ex-offenders. Most clients have gone through a crisis and so have low self-esteem and are often far from employment. By helping clients develop their self-esteem and work related skills Ferry helps them to find volunteering opportunities or even paid employment.

Local group Them Nerves headed by Tommy, a regular fundraiser for EACH gave a free performance for fellow runners after the event as a thank you for taking part. They raised more than 200 for EACH (East Anglians Childrens Hospices) by completing the run and then even more in collection buckets during their post-race party!

Aint no sunshine when its gone

Thousands of homeowners across the country have installed solar panels over the last few years, saving money on their energy bills, protecting themselves from future price rises and, best of all, getting paid by the government, tax free, for the electricity they generate.

This has made solar energy a sound investment and given homeowners a healthy return on their investment.

Recent announcements made by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) proposing cuts to the Feed-in Tariff have come up against strong criticism. However the industry is still expecting to see drastic cuts being announced in January that may come into effect as early as February 2016.

The Feed-in Tariff for small scale solar PV installations could be cut by as much as 87%. That would mean the estimated tax free income and savings generated by an average domestic system would fall from 750 per year to approx. 379 per year. The FiT payments are made

over 20 years and the cuts could mean homeowners will earn up to 7,000 less over the FiT payment period .

All bands of the tariff are likely to be affected quite severely by the proposed cuts. However, it is the installations in the 0-10kW band (almost all domestic installations) that will be hardest hit. In addition, a review of the default degression (applied to all tariffs) is expected to reduce the Feed-in Tariff

Government cuts to the Solar Feed in Tariff are expected in early 2016. Read on to nd out why now could be your last chance to secure a return on your investment.

  • | March in the Past: January - Jennifer Lawler

March Grammar Schools Christmas vacation was extended to January 28th in 1878. Headmaster, Mr Lane, had injured his foot three months previously and his recovery was so slow that re-opening the school in the New Year was postponed until later in the month.

Victorian businesses in March in January 1878 offered a wide range of goods of the finest quality to their customers, as well as offering excellent personal service. T. B. Marshall, family grocer, provision merchant and tea dealer, Market Place, having moved to the former premises of Mr H. Coates, thanked numerous friends and patrons for their kind support. He assured his customers he would continue to supply goods of best obtainable quality. Exclusive articles, such as

fresh lobsters, salmon, sardines, pickles, sauces, jams etc., of best-known brands, would be at lowest possible prices, as quality was always his prime concern. Finest Leicester, Cheddar, and Gloucester cheeses. Prime cured Wiltshire bacon. Bates and Shepperson, general and furnishing ironmongers, gas fitters, bell hangers, lock and gunsmiths, of 4 Bridge Street, having bought their stock at very low prices, because of the depression in manufacturing areas, would supply their customers on the best terms, with the firms personal attention[1].

A watch-night service was held at St Peters Church on Friday New Years Eve 1916. The service was conducted by curate Rev W. Knights who gave a short address. A few minutes before midnight there was a pause for silent prayer. The

customary watch-night service at St Wendredas Church had to be discontinued because of lighting restrictions, and new regulations about bells prohibited ringing out the old year and ringing in the new.

At the annual meeting of March Farmers Union, chairman Mr Truman told of their fundraising, including a sale in support of the Agricultural Relief of Allies which raised 900. They hoped that before another year was over, the Allies efforts would have ended well and they would have their annual dinner in peace. At the monthly meeting of the March Urban District Council at March Town Hall, Chairman Mr G. Brewin, wished members a happy new year and said he hoped and trusted that before the year was ended, the war would be finished satisfactorily for the Allies [2].

    | Legal Corner by Susan Pearson Managing Partner

PROBATEYou have just lost your life partner and you wander into the bank having mustered up the courage to utter the words that they have passed away, and the clerk asks you: Will you be applying for Probate?

What does this word Probate mean?A Grant of Probate is a document which is produced by the probate registry when they are satisfied that the Will before them is the Last Will and Testament of the deceased.

The Executor(s) named in the Will are required to swear an Oath that the document being submitted is the final Will of the deceased and that when the Grant is issued; they will administer the Estate of the deceased in accordance with the terms of the Will. The Executor(s) will also be required to complete an Inland Revenue Account.

The circumstances may be such that a Grant ofProbate may not be required, for instance when your bank account was joint or the deceased life insurance policy stipulates that the proceeds of the policy are paid directly to you.

When in doubt, ask a local solicitor who will be able to give you the expert advice you need.

If you require assistance or advice following the passing of a loved one please get in touch.

Broken or Damaged Windows?Faulty Hinges, Handles or Locks?

Want The Latest Energy Saving Glass? All Glazing Backed By Our

...we make saving money perfectly clear...

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Dont replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows Service With A Smile! Its been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that its all about service. Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But its not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didnt focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didnt expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole. Cloudy2Clear service Whittlesey, Eastrea & Coates areas and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. The truth is that its not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people Ive done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated. So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and hell be happy to help!

MARCH BRASS 2000 | Club Spotlight

With the passing years, many players have come and gone, but one euphonium player, Ivor Smith, himself an ex-railway worker, has been playing for over sixty-five years with the band.

Its Musical Director is Nigel Sutterby. Nigel joined March Brass in 1978 and he began playing when he was eleven and so has been playing for more than thirty years. Nigel played principal cornet for March for over ten years and was Bandmaster of March for about five years. Nigel conducted the Lakenheath Band for six years and is currently conducting the Forest Heath District Band, a position he has held for over five years. He has also previously been the principal cornet and Chairman of Lakenheath Band.

As it receives no financial support, the band raises the necessary income to cover its annual expenditure through fundraising events, organised by a very supportive Chairman/Trustee, together with performing in excess of twenty-five engagements a year at carnivals and fetes, throughout the summer months, and carol concerts during the festive period.

The band has taken part in several media broadcasts and also performed in concert with the top contesting band G.U.S.

The band is always looking for new, experienced players to come and join them. They also offer tuition for anyone wanting to learn to play a brass instrument and lessons take place immediately before band practice at only 2 per session. They can even supply an instrument if required! Or, if you would like March Brass 2000 to play at your event, please contact their Secretary, Deb Watts, on (01354) 655429 | www.marchbrass2000.co.uk

March Brass 2000, formerly the March Railway Silver Band, was formed in 1891 in a small fenland town in Cambridgeshire, a town which boasted the largest railway marshalling and storage yard in Europe during the Second World War.

The band contained mainly railway workers, hence their title March Railway Silver Prize Band. As the band developed, they became very successful at contesting, giving many other bands a run for their money.

With the railway no longer associated with the band, members decided that the new millennium was the ideal time to change its name to MARCH BRASS 2000.

The band is a friendly family-oriented brass band with over thirty members, from as young as nine to over seventy years of age. The majority of them live in the town, but several travel from further afield, including Wisbech, Tydd St Giles, Ramsey and Lakenheath to attend weekly practices. Similarly, there are a number of learners attending the beginners classes that cater for all differing abilities.

Kashmiri Lamb CurryMethod:1. Cut the lamb into large cubes, peel and chop the garlic. Pour 1 litre water into a saucepan. Immerse the meat, add the garlic and 1/8 tsp salt, then bring to the boil. Leave simmering for 20 minutes.2. Meanwhile, mix the chilli and paprika powder together with a little water to make a smooth paste. Peel the shallots. Soften them in another pan with the butter and oil for about 10 minutes over low heat.3. Add the cloves, cardamon pods, bay leaves and mace to the pan and cook for 1 minute. Then add the ground coriander, fennel, ginger, turmeric, pepper paste and 2 tablespoons of water. Continue cooking the mixture for a further 2 minutes, whilst stirring occasionally.4. Remove the meat from the saucepan with a slotted spoon and add it to the other pan. Cook for 5 minutes while stirring, then add the yoghurt and combine.5. Strain the water which the mat was cooked in through a sieve. Add 500ml of it to the pan, bring to the boil, then lower the heat and cook for 30 minutes until the meat is tender. Remove the bay leaves and the cardamon pods before serving.

Serve this delicious curry with plain rice or if youd like to try something different use rice to which you have added a little butter and oil, 1 small chopped onion, 1 bay leaf, 1 stick of cinnamon and 1 clove. Cover the mixture with water and cook in the normal way.

If youve leftover turkey you can use this instead of lamb - just adjust the cooking time and marinade the meat with yoghurt overnight before cooking!

    Pre-Nuptial and Post-Nuptial Agreements

Although it can be a difficult discussion to have with your intended, and as unromantic as it may seem, pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements have become increasingly common over recent years and can save parties both money and potential stress and upset, if the marriage breaks down.At present, pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements are not formally recognised as a part of English law. However, the Law Commission recently looked into this further and have recommended that such agreements should now become a part of matrimonial law, subject to certain conditions.

Where parties have entered into such an agreement, and the marriage subsequently fails, the existence of a pre or post-nuptial agreement is something to which the Court will have serious regard.

Both parties must be aware that no agreement between them can override the legislation which is in place to govern how a Court deals with financial and property matters within matrimonial proceedings, and cannot oust the Judges discretion to decide upon the appropriate division of assets on a divorce. This means that a pre or post-nuptial agreement cannot stop a spouse applying to the Court for financial provision from the other when divorce proceedings have been issued. However, the case law is such that the Court should give effect to a pre or post-nuptial agreement that is freely entered into by each party, as long as each party has a full appreciation of its implications.

It is increasingly common that the Court would seek to uphold such an agreement unless it feels that it would be unfair to hold the parties to their agreement for some reason, usually because of some unforeseen event which has changed the circumstances of the parties.

In other words, if a couple enter into a pre or post-nuptial agreement, they should do so with the intention and the assumption that it will be binding.

There are various safeguards which need to be in place in order to ensure that the agreement is given serious consideration by the Court in any subsequent divorce proceedings. It is, therefore, important that legal advice is taken well in advance of a wedding to ensure there is plenty of time for the couple to discuss how they want to approach it and for the agreement to be drawn up. That said, a couple can have an agreement drawn up after they are married, this being a post- nuptial agreement but the same principles apply.

A pre-nuptial agreement can also provide some assurance to family members where money or property is being gifted, lent, or inherited, in that it can show what is intended to happen to such money if the parties go their separate ways. Such agreements can also be particularly important where the couple have children from previous relationships and want to preserve assets for those respective children, should the relationship fail.

Given the uncertainties couples often face if they have to resort to the divorce courts to resolve matters, discussing a pre-nuptial agreement is definitely something which should be considered where one or other party is coming into the marriage with assets which he or she wishes to preserve. Of course, everyone would hope that the agreement may never have to be relied upon, but for many couples the peace of mind that it brings makes the existence of such an agreement well worth it.

It is essential that you gradually build up the levels of exercise to help your body become accustomed to the new activity and to prevent injury. Take your time and progress slowly. You will need to warm your body up, prior to exercise, to raise your body temperature and prepare your cardiovascular, respiratory, and nervous systems for the demands of exercise by slowly increasing the blood circulation to and from your heart and muscles. Warming up helps your connective tissues better handle the stress of exercise, decreasing your chance of injury. Connective tissue is similar to hard plastic; if you dont warm-up plastic it wont be flexible, and is much more likely to break.

After exercise, it is important to cool down and stretch muscles that you have

The new year is a great time to try a new type of exercise or set yourself new goals. However, beginning an exercise programme can be very overwhelming - even painful if you arent careful.

worked. When stretching, you should feel a slight pulling in the muscle, but no pain. As you hold the stretch, the muscle will relax. Proper warm ups (and cool downs) also help reduce the severity of soreness in the next day or two following your workout. The increased blood flow helps deliver more oxygen to the muscles and gets rid of the waste products that contribute to soreness. Increased blood flow also helps bring more fuel to your body, resulting in better performance. Our Sports and Remedial Massage Therapist can give you advice and help with stretching. Massage treatment can also help your muscles become accustomed to the new exercise, treat muscular tightness and prevent little niggles becoming injuries.
