4 Discovering March January 2014

new year and new year resolutions of course. Mine tend to always be much the same which go along the lines of being more organised, cleaning and sorting out my house and ebaying surplus stuff, doing more with the horses and ponies and getting a realistic work/family balance. The year then tends to also go along the same sort of lines which means another year of trying to catch up with things whilst spending more time in the garden than inside and never quite finding the right worklife/family balance. I seem to run very fast to stay in the same place and I know many people will relate to that one. But of course this year will be different. I will emerge from 2014 with the perfect, newly decorated house, the tidy, organised office, the calm, collected outlook on life and plenty of quality family time. I will won’t I? Oh well if not at least March has plenty of interesting things to divert me from my failure. We are getting more and more clubs send in their details and our events page seems as busy in January as it was in in the Autumn. There is so much to see and do in March. If we have missed anything out then just drop us an email or post us a letter and we’ll include it. One new year resolution I do intend to keep is to support the treebank in March. Hayley Dolbear is the force behind it. She says that it came about as a few years ago she was on her own in a city with two very small children. She had little support and one Christmas she had to choose between presents for the children or a tree. Her neighbour asked why she didn’t have a tree and after admitting she was not able to have one this year the neighbour went off and came back with this lovely artificial tree that had been sat in her loft (just in case) and a set of lights. Hayley says that tree meant the world to her. She goes on“I have since moved to March to be near family and find myself surrounded by a supportive community and am now in a position to give back, hence the idea of the tree bank. So I’m asking people to donate any ‘spare’ or ‘tired’ artificial Christmas trees and any unwanted decorations our charity. They will then be offered to people who may be struggling during the Christmas season. There is a list of agreed drop off points in the March area with many schools and churches agreeing to collect donations. If you would like to know more about the organisation or want to get involved please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected] call Hayley Dolbear on07962337988Blog: http://treebank25.blogspot.co.uk/You can donate a tree or decorations up to the 12th January. Have a great new year and Discovering March looks forward to hearing from YOU in 2014.

Marmite or Jam? Marmite (although I am into traditional country

food and actually make jam from my own grapes!)

Bicycle or speed boat? Boat, of course, because I do have a boat (for sea fishing - it’s not a gin palace!)Steak or Pasta? Steak - my pet hate is pasta

Then just for fun- choose one of each pair

A word from

March Town Councillor and Fenland District Councillor Mike Cornwell

Discovering March asks the questions!

Our Town Council is an established and proactive provider of community events and this must continue. The town also has to expand and provide further housing but this must be done at the same time as providing the infrastructure to meet the increasing needs and it must be done without spoiling what we have and what we need - hence the emerging new March Town Plan.Thinking about the month ahead are there any events that readers should look out for? With Christmas and New Year over many people will find money tight. Do please have a look at joining our new March Rainbow Savers. Its a new branch of a well established Credit Union (alternative bank) which I am helping to introduce with the support of FDC and some really helpful volunteers. Please look out for our leaflets and posters and come and join our fully protected and secure scheme - and save up for next Christmas!

- I think its pretty obvious that, having lived and worked in March for well over 50 years, I like the town and its people - that’s why I am committed to do my best to help us go forward in a way that we want. We are after all, the true Capital of the Fens!

How long have you lived in March? I moved to March when I married in 1967, however I schooled at March Grammar and began work here (Isle of Ely CC) in what is now Fenland Hall - 1954 and 1961 respectively. Think I can now claim to be a long standing resident! Why did you want to become a Councillor?I wanted to be a Councillor because I had always belonged to service clubs (Round Table in 1968 and Rotary Club in 1984) and with retirement looming wanted to find a different outlet where I could work for the community I thought highly of. I had worked for Councils and close to the NHS for nearly 50 years so I suppose is was a natural progression to move from officer to Councillor because I understood the technicalities of local government. I stood as a candidate for March North in 2011 and won the Fenland seat at that election and was elected unopposed to the Town Council. What do you feel is your greatest achievement as a Councillor?Cannot think of any one achievement but have always fought March’s corner at District level (eg the proposed modernisation of George Campbell Leisure Centre and the provision of our first Christmas Market) together with dealing with resident’s issues and concerns at Ward level and supporting the many community events and services provided by the Town Council. The real time consumer (around 3 days a week!) is the District Council where I helped develop the new style Tourism service and set up and currently Chair the Fenland Tourism Board (which brings considerable money into the local economy) together with sitting on the Planning and two other committees. I am also the secretary of the ruling conservative group on the council. What do you think is March’s strongest asset?Obviously the people, but, our unique in Fenland riverside leisure facilities along West End. Many towns would give anything to have such an asset and we must protect it under all circumstances. What would you like to change or develop in your time in office?

Spate of Distraction Burglaries in PeterboroughDear readers, Thankfully, distraction burglaries are quite rare but, as there has been a spate of them recently in Peterborough, please be careful as it could happen in your area:-On Saturday 30th November a male attended the home address of two elderly victims in Orton Longueville. The male victim (aged 83) has mobility problems; the female victim (aged 78) has Parkinsons. The caller claimed to have completed work to the victims’ roof. He wanted £80 for the work, although there was no evidence that work had been carried out. The suspect was paid as he argued the matter with both victims. On Sunday 1st December 2013, the same suspect returned and claimed that he had left keys in the address. He pushed past the elderly female victim who couldn’t do anything to stop him. The suspect went to where the family kept their money (as he saw it the previous day) and removed the lot. It’s predicted that between £600-£700 was stolen. On Thursday 5th December, a male attended the home address of an elderly gentleman (aged 90) in Dogsthorpe and demanded money for having cleaned the gent’s guttering. No work had been carried out. The male was invited into the kitchen and an amount of money has now been reported as missing. On Friday 6th December, a male attended the home address of an 84 year old female in Orton Longueville and demanded money for guttering work. The lady refused to pay him and he got quite agitated with her before walking off. The male in question is described as white, short brown hair, local English accent in his 30’s. He was wearing dark messy clothing, slim build and was clean shaven. No vehicle seen although it is believed that he will have a vehicle parked close by.

Please be vigilant and report anything suspicious by dialing 101 and asking for your local Crime Reduction Officer; it is very important that elderly or vulnerable people do not open the door to uninvited callers and they should be encouraged to use their door chains whenever possible. They could also dial 101 and sign up to the Nominated Neighbour Scheme.

Team 'Safe Local Trades' has raised £6,400 for Age

UK Peterborough!Between September and November each year, Peterborough-based Safe Local Trades organise fund-raising events for their chosen charity Age UK Peterborough. This year there were three types of event - a Firewalk, the Great Eastern Run and several charity skydives. All events were an overall success and the organiser, Eileen Le Voi, owner of Safe Local Trades, said “we would like to thank each and every volunteer who took part, and to everyone who sponsored them in their events, all of which helped to raise an amazing £6,400 for this very worthy local charity". Eileen went on to say "it is a privilege to raise funds for Age UK Peterborough – funds which help them to continue to deliver vital services to an ever growing population of older people in Peterborough." David Bache, CEO of Age UK Peterborough, said “we at Age UK Peterborough are truly indebted to Eileen and her team of volunteers who have worked so hard and risked life and limb, to raise such an incredible amount of money. Over the past few years, Safe Local Trades have helped raise over £18,500 - no other local company has ever raised this amount for our charity and we are enormously grateful”.

Family Friendly and Family Run The new look Georges focuses on quality and

atmosphere

The Discovering March team recently dined out at Georges where landlord, Nigel Marsh explained about the change of name that maybe isn't such a change after all. More recently known as the The George Inn, the writings of Henry Tipple in 1899 actually refer to it as 'Georges'. Nigel said he looked at everything and changed everything and the results so far have been exciting. Among the many accolades are many business award finalists, a coveted CAMRA Gold Award, the Cask Marque (not given away lightly) and his daughter was an Apprentice of the Year finalist. We had come to eat but I know my partner would have been interested in the four real ales, all cask conditioned and chosen to be brewed as close to Georges as possible. Nigel's son Arron is head bar man and keeps the cellar to top standards. Our meal was cooked by daughter Sophie who is

Chef at Georges. As well as a comprehensive and home cooked meals from fresh ingredients in the bar menu, there is also an extensive restaurant menu with an exciting vegetarian selection. A Sunday carvery is unique in that the meat offered where possible is from tasty rare breeds. The beef is a speciality as it comes from Long Horn cattle that are free range in Cambridgeshire with local Gloucester Old Spot pig providing the pork. Local

potatoes are also on the menu with as many local, in-season vegetables as possible. My fish and chips came with large, tasty chips, a generous portion of haddock and mushy peas presented attractively whilst my colleague opted for Farmer's Pie, home made using a choice of beef or pork and including Fenland vegetables. The Long Horn Beef Burger looked delicious and came with a large rustic bread bun and an attractive salad. After lunch I had a look round outside and noticed that Georges boasts many beer gardens including a conservatory that lets in the light in winter and the air as well in summer when the glass is removed from the windows. It looks out across March High Street and there is also a continental type area outside for enjoying drinks and snacks in the summer or in good weather. As Georges also feature a range of home made cakes (Landlord Nigel does tend to succumb to the temptation of the chocolate brownies!), plus freshly made scones with cream, then having a Cappuccino or a cuppa in the morning is a social way to meet people. Live entertainment is a feature at Georges and if you want a sample before you visit, they are on You Tube with their GBC1Channel. The Mummers are recreating ancient plays in the bar over Christmas and you can catch them on this channel too. Nigel feels that he is creating a community led bar and restaurant which although is aimed at the 35 plus age group, by no means excludes younger people and welcomes families. Nigel is a great believer in mixed communities believing that youngsters learn how to live in the community by being with their elders. With his family around him and in key roles, the Georges certainly sets an example. Why not go in and take a look for yourselves?

Your Health: a Complementary View

A literal “pain in the neck” is a very common complaint: most people have experienced the discomfort and inconvenience of acute torticollis (known to us as a “crick in the neck” or a “wry neck”). Though extremely painful, it is very rarely serious and generally will be resolved within 4-5 days without treatment or straightaway with muscle-release techniques. The most common causes for the sudden onset of this pain are: the neck not being supported correctly whilst in bed; poor posture whilst watching television or using a computer; carrying heavy loads on one side, or one side of the neck being exposed to the cold. Typically, the neck is twisted to one side, with movement being painful and often causing muscle spasms. This “torticollis”, or twisting, of the neck, can also often be seen in newborn babies, because of the position of the head whilst still in the womb. Babies affected in this way may be able to feed on one side, but not on the other. This can be resolved very quickly and simply, with a gentle release of the muscle affected. Sometimes the pain will spread into the shoulder and upper back on the same side, as other muscles tighten up, the main culprits being the trapezius, levator scapula and the rhomboid muscles (see diagram). This is the reason why treatment should not just focus on the neck, but include the release of these other muscles, where affected. positions, hence stopping the discomfort. Often, there is no discernible reason why we wake up with an aching, stiff neck, but it is wise to ensure you are not causing the problem by putting your neck into a strained position in bed. The most common mistake is using more than one pillow, so your neck is at an un-natural angle. Your pillow should support your neck in such a way that your spine remains straight, whether you lie on your back, or on one side. Sleeping on your front means your neck is almost always twisted one way or another, so this increases your chances of waking up with a wry neck.

Wishing you a very happy, and pain-free, New Year!

What a pain in the neck!

What a pain in the neck!

The body’s bones and joints will, by and large, go where the muscles put them, so tight muscles can lead to joint misalignment.

Releasing the muscles allows the bones and joints to return to their correct positions, hence stopping the discomfort.

Gardening Corner

It may be the depths of Winter but planning must start for Spring whether it is buying seeds for the season ahead, choosing which seed potatoes to plant or cleaning the greenhouse, work must start in earnest if the harvest is to succeed and the garden is to looks it best over Summer. In January, your garden will probably need some protection from frost, high wind and rain. So it is a good idea to check that tree and large shrub stakes are still holding firm, and also that any plants held with ties as they may need loosening after a year’s growth - or tightening if they have loosened off with the winds we have just had. Also check plant fleeces and any other supports for damage and repair them as necessary. Alsoconsider some plants in pots may be happier in sunnier places and may have to be moved around to find the brightest spot.

Top important jobs for January1. Recycle your Christmas tree by shredding it for mulch2. Ventilate the greenhouse on sunny days - this helps to cut down on disease. Just opening the doors will help3. Dig over any empty areas that have not been dug already4. Repair and re-shape lawn edges5. Inspect stored tubers of Dahlia, Begonia and Canna for rots or drying out6. Prune apple and pear trees7. You can start forcing rhubarb for early stems8. Plan your vegetable crop rotations for the coming season9. Keep putting out food and water for hungry birds, dont forget to break the ice on birdbaths if it freezes10. Its a good time to clean down and fumigate your greenhouse

Now all the food has gone from the hedgerows the wild birds will need our help to survive the winter. At this time of year, put out food and water on a regular basis. In severe weather, feed twice daily if you can: in the morning and in the early afternoon. Birds require high energy (high fat) foods during the cold winter weather to maintain their fat reserves to survive the frosty nights. The best forms of high fat feeds are suet balls but remember to use the ones without nets as smaller birds can be come entangled in them. Many forms of fat feeds are available including those not only of different shapes to fit different feeders but also with different contents such as nuts, seeds and fruit, some even with mealworms. Mealworms are loved by all insect-eating birds such as Robins, Pied Wagtails and Blue Tits. Peanuts are another high fat content feed and are popular with tits, greenfinches, house sparrows, nuthatches, great spotted woodpeckers and siskins. Crushed or grated nuts attract robins, dunnocks and even wrens. Always be careful not to feed roasted or salted nuts and to ensure you buy from a reputable retailer such as Skylark Garden Centre as they must be free from aflatoxin as this natural toxin can kill birds.

You can bank on having an authentic meal with a twistThe Spice Bank brings contemporary Indian cooking to March. By Liz Wright, Member of the Guild of Food Writers

Abu Sayeed, Director of the Spice Bank is a man with a passion. A passion to create contemporary Indian food in contemporary surroundings using fresh vegetables and traditional recipes with a twenty-first century slant. Looking round the clean lines of the Spice Bank with its warmly coloured interior, mood lighting and gorgeous chandelier in the centre of the room gives a feel for the attention to detail that is followed through into the food. The comfortable padded chairs with high backs for extra support and the clean white but sturdy, good sized tables, look an inviting place to spend an evening. But what of the cooking? Mr Sayeed says they take care to reproduce the authentic tastes and look of Bangladesh/Indian dishes and use the freshest ingredients. An unusually large range of herbs and spices are used – a full dozen of the main ones. The Chef is bringing a taste of London to March as he has worked in top London restaurants and in his twenty years of cooking, he has trained and gained experience under top Chefs. He's bringing all this knowledge to March where he is creating his own dishes that are unique to the Spice Bank as well as reproducing the traditional tastes of much loved Indian cuisine. Fotka which can be chicken or lamb, is one such speciality that you won't experience anywhere else in March. It's fairly hot as it is a Bangledeshi special chilli cooked with herbs. Lebo Merra/Murgee which is a medium hot dish is chicken or lamb cooked with a specially flavoured lemon. A milder dish, also only available at the Spice Bank, is Mixed Fruit Ka Bahar which is chicken or lamb cooked with mixed fruits. Mr Sayeed says they pride themselves on not using frozen food vegetables so all is fresh and the meat too is of best quality with chicken breasts and prime lamb cuts being used in all dishes. In addition there is a full take away menu with free delivery within a five mile radius, including Wimblington, Doddington and Guyhirne. In the new year, watch out for Sunday Royal Buffet at only £7.95 per person between 12 noon and 3pm. From Sunday to Wednesday a you can have a Spice Bank Feast at £12.95 which includes any starter, any main, any side and rice and naan from their special feast menu. The Spice Bank is also an ideal venue for business meetings with a smart tv screen shortly available. They are also keen to solve your outside catering problems – let them do the cooking and bring it to you. They can even serve it for you if you want a really special dinner party.

The Spice Bank is in what was the TSB bank building which is next to St Peter's Church so with very easy parking in City Road Car Park. It's in very easy walking distance of much of March as well. You can follow them on Facebook or check out their website for special offers www.thespicebank.com

Paws on patrolCambridgeshire Constabulary and Fenland District Council are working in partnership to launch “Paws on Patrol”. The idea behind the scheme is like neighbourhood watch for dog walkers. Dog walkers will be encouraged to ring in any issues that they see or find such as criminal activity, anti-social behaviour or suspicious behaviour. They will be given a card explaining which agency to call either Police or the local authority with contact numbers. The launch will be on Tuesday, 21st January, 2014 from 10am to 2pm in West End Park, March. The event HQ will be the Safer Fenland Partnership New Horizon Outreach Vehicle, which will be parked near to the George Campbell Leisure Centre. The scheme will be administered by PCSO Rachael Cheverton at March Police Station. She will maintain a file of member details and with agreement all members will be signed up to the Cambridgeshire Police ecops system. It is anticipated that “Paws on Patrol” members will be sent messages asking them to look out for specific issues and informing them of positive outcome from calls made by members. If you are a resident of March and would like to find out more – please come along on 21st January to find out more.

ChocolateThe taste of chocolate can sometimes be hard to resist and from the run up to Christmas, through to St Valentine’s day and then onto Easter - it seems to be simply everywhere you look. But did you know that chocolate is actually poisonous if you are a dog?

Chocolate contains a powerful stimulant called theobromine which is similar to caffeine and poisonous to dogs, so much so that ingestion can be fatal if untreated.

Signs of Chocolate Poisoning include:

Abdominal tensionDiarrhoeaVomiting (with or without blood)Dehydration (increased drinking)Increased salivation Hyperactivity/excitability/restlessnessTremors/seizuresIncreased heart rate and rapid BreathingBlood in urine and incontinence

If you think your dog has eaten any form of chocolate: dark, milk, white, cooking, drinking

or cocoa beans or powder, contact your Vet immediately. Clinical signs usually appear within 4 hours of ingestion and can last up to 72 hours.

How is Chocolate Poisioning Treated?

Treatment can include induced vomiting, fluid therapy, administration of absorbents such as charcoal, drugs to assist with heart rate control or even flushing the stomach under general anaesthetic.

Our advice, always ensure that chocolates are out of your dogs reach and should they get there paws on them don’t wait for signs of chocolate poisoning, call your Vet immediately.

anuary begins in the twelve days of Christmas from Christmas Eve to Twelfth Night January 5th , when in March as elsewhere, decorations were taken down at the end of Christmas. Epiphany on January 6th celebrates the arrival of the Wise Men to visit Jesus. Some churches celebrated Epiphany until Candlemas on February 2nd the midpoint of winter. January has many agricultural traditions across Fenland and Cambridgeshire. Plough Monday is the first Monday after Epiphany, said to follow Plough Sunday when ploughs were blessed at the traditional start of the agricultural year as work began again after Christmas. On Plough Monday, ploughboys, with blacked faces to disguise themselves, took a plough from house to house collecting money. If money was not given, they ran the plough over the lawn. They also took part in Molly dancing on this day to raise money. Sometimes Plough plays were performed, a version of Mummers’ plays, which were generally performed around Christmas and New Year. Straw Bear festivals celebrate the ploughing tradition of parading a straw bear around town. Winters in Fenland brought frequent flooding, with water from higher ground overflowing rivers, before drainage. January 8th 1725 inhabitants of March presented a petition to the Bedford Level Corporation ‘for the mending and raising of the Forty Foot bank from Welches Dam to Carter Bridge and as far towards the 40 Foot bridge near Ramsey Mere mouth as necessary to

prevent flooding’(1) On 14 January 1847 March Station opened and Eastern Counties Railway ran their first passenger train from Ely to March and Peterborough. (2) This line was built in ten months despite the problems with soft fen soils and the line had been taking rail freight from December 10th 1846. The connecting route to Wisbech from March, with the Wisbech, St Ives and Cambridge Junction Railway, opened on May 3rd 1847. (3) January 1914 saw a strong programme at the Electric Palace cinema, ‘this popular place of entertainment’. ‘Visitors were loud in their appreciation of the remarkably clear and steady pictures shown… unsurpassed either in or out of London’. March Public Hall showed a pantomime for the first time for a while, ‘Aladdin’ ‘a smart and up-to-date show’. Miss Lilian Mars portrayed Aladdin and Mr Fred Raynor, Abanazar. ‘Various speciality turns add to the attractiveness of the show’. (4)1. S/B/SP/301, County Record Office, Cambridge 2. Allen, Cecil J. The law of intended consequences

Your questions answered!

Hby Steve McGregor, Head of Civil Litigation, Fraser Dawbarns LLP

Fraser Dawbarns LLP announcement… We are delighted to welcome Barbara Judkins to the Civil Litigation department at the March office. If you have any enquiries, please contact 01354 602880.

ardly anybody who has regular contact with public services in the UK can claim to be unaffected by the public expenditure cuts that have occurred over the last 5 years or so. For my part I am one of those who have always felt that the bureaucracy of public service is inclined to be wasteful and self serving and delivers what are flagged up as “essential” services in a less than efficient way. I speak as a former public servant of 11 years. BUT there is another side to this. What has this got to do with the law? Well quite a lot really. There is no doubt that the provision of legal services and the administration of justice is a costly business. Lawyers, sensible ones anyway, want to be paid a salary which they regard as adequate reward for the qualifications they have achieved and the responsibility the job entails. So they get out of publicly funded work. The public fund for legal services is slashed. Many can no longer afford to go to law so they don’t bother. Does this really matter save to those directly affected? I suspect the general public would say not, until that is, someone moves their boundary fence or does not pay for work they have done. The decline in public funding not only directly to lawyers has other consequences as well. Statistics are produced to show that fewer court houses are needed. Those that are retained, even new ones, are under used and court sittings are cancelled. The police are prevailed upon by so called “guidance” to prosecute fewer people. What does this mean for “law and order”? The danger is that people become disconnected from

the law and decline to be witnesses or take part in a system they no longer regard as having any relevance to them. Any lingering feelings of public service quickly disappear in the knowledge that as a witness you may face a long journey to and from a distant court and you will not even be paid the losses that arise from doing that. The civil courts are experiencing a significant decline in new cases issued. One suspects this is not unconnected with the changes to the way low value personal injury claims are dealt with and the raising of the small claims limit to £10,000. This has also led to an increase in the numbers of litigants in person who are mostly partly informed, ill prepared and some frankly hopeless. The number of new cases issued at employment tribunals has significantly declined since the introduction of fees this year. That may be a good thing as some cases could only be described as speculative and without risk to claimants. That is the fault of the lawyers who took them on hoping that the other side would cave in at some stage simply because it was cheaper to do so. However the baby may have gone out with the bath water. So, the government achieves its cuts. At the same time it emasculates the court system and with it part of the legal profession. Just as there are too many journalists chasing too few stories there may be too many lawyers chasing too few cases. Market forces inevitably come into play and those lawyers who lose sight of the fact they are running a business (if they ever had it) cut their fees or close down. Now that is the intended consequence.

LoUiSE HAzELReigning Commonwealth heptathlon champion Louise Hazel,

born in March, talks to Discovering March about her retirement from athletics, competing at the Olympics, personal training and

her plans for the future. By Andrew Smith

DiscoveringMarchJanuary2014.indd 36 16/12/2013 13:57:25

January 2014 Discovering March 37

Q: In September you announced that you were retiring from the heptathlon; can you explain your reason/reasons for doing so?Following the Olympics I took a little bit of time out and got back into training and trained up until the 2013 indoor season, but something just didn’t feel right it didn’t feel like it was ever going to be the same as it was for the Olympics, and so I thought rather than continue with another four year struggle for funding and training and staying fit I felt like it was the right time to hang up my heptathlon spikes.

Q: What initially drew you to the heptathlon? I guess it was the variety, I excelled at a lot of sports when I was growing up and I was competing in netball, hockey, rounders, so when it came to athletics just focusing on one event seemed like a waste of time. I felt that if I’m going to travel 30 or 40 miles every weekend I might as well do a sprint race, some hurdling, the long-jump a shot-put etc. so that was part and parcel of the decision, as well as the fact that I was quite an active youngster

Q: What was the highlight of your career as a heptathlete and why? It has to be winning Commonwealth gold (in Delhi in 2010), purely and simply because all my hard work came to fruition in that one moment, and it’s a huge reward for what is years of sacrifice, and blood, sweat and tears and training on the track. So for that to be not only recognised, but also to win a medal for your country it’s the ultimate reward for your hard work, it makes it all worthwhile.

Q: What was it like competing at a home Olympics and what are your abiding memories of the 2012 games. It was off the scale, it was an absolutely amazing experience and I think it was always going to be the pinnacle of any British athlete’s career. I’d competed at World Championship level before and at the Europeans (European Championships), and it felt like a larger scale version of a major championship event. When we were in the village environment that’s exactly how it felt, but it wasn’t until you stepped out onto the track that you realise you have this absolute wealth of home support. I’ve been to a lot of championships before where there’s been a lot of athletics fans, but it’s never always the case that everyone’s cheering for you and willing you to do well, so that was the ultimate environment for success.

Q: Sports people are often asked what they plan to do after they retire from their chosen

discipline, what would you like to do post athletics? Health and fitness is very much at the forefront of my mind, and long term I would love to pursue a career in sports media as a presenter. I’m looking forward to just branching out sport is my passion it’s not just one sport in particular, and I also like the idea of being a point of contact for people who are wanting to stay fit and healthy as well. So sports, health and fitness would be top of my agenda for the next few years.

Q: Since December 2012 you’ve made yourself available for personal training, how has that been going and explain what the podium effect is. Personal training is at the moment one of the many things that I do and I really enjoy it I love the fact that I can put other people through pain (laughs) instead of me suffering. It’s great I love working one to one with clients; I love that sort of working relationship and being almost a support network. For the podium effect I just thought about taking the average person and giving them an ounce of what we do as an athlete and what that would look like from a training perspective. So in January I’ll be announcing a free 360 day training plan where anyone can sign up and get a guide as to how to complete their 5x30 minute workouts for the week, that’s recommended in terms of exercise. It allows you to follow an online video everyday for 360 days and as well as the training there’s also a nutritional programme for you to follow so there’s a guide of what to eat and what size portions and we’ve had some really great results. Speaking to one of my clients recently, even after the she finished the programme she’s continued to do it on her own and continued to keep shedding the weight which is really encouraging. I thought if there was something I could give back it would be to give everybody the opportunity that I had as an athlete, and that’s to have the basic information for a training programme and an idea of what you should be doing in order to keep your body in shape.

Q: What goals/targets have you set yourself for 2014? All I can say is that I’m very much focused on being an advocate of fitness, health and lifestyle in the next 12 months, and there will be some exciting opportunities along the way. When you stop your sport it’s about starting all over again. It’s always great to have a goal but you never quite know what path your career is going to take but there will be some really cool things in the pipeline I can guarantee that, but I can’t really talk about them at this moment in time.

A roof of international fameTrevor Bevis, author of many books on Fenland, talks about St Wendreda's famous roof

ong ago the poet John Betjeman, renowned author, wrote “St Wendreda's Church, March, is worth cycling 40 miles in headwind to see.”Knowing the strength of Fen winds, most will think twice about doing that! It is the angel roof expertly acclaimed as the finest and most original angel roof in Britain which attracts a great many visitors, several from abroad. Carved from oak between 1522 and 1526 in honour of the Creator and his virtuous March servant, Saint Wendreda who lived and died at March in the seventh century and who was enshrined in the Church building, the double hammer-beam roof represents the apex of the medieval wood carver's skill. There are 118 half life-sized angel figures in full flight adorning the hammer-beams and side panels as well as 14 carvings of apostles and martyrs seen holding emblems of their martyrdom and a figure of Christ extends His hands in blessing. Intriguingly, an ugly, crowned head occupies a spandrel and gazes at the angels above. Local tradition has it he is the devil, the crowned Prince of Darkness, but I'm not sure. Certainly he is outnumbered by the angel host! The roof is crammed full with 2,700 fleur-di-lys. Who made this glorious assembly? There are six angel roofs in East Anglia – nowhere else. Little is known about most of them but the roof at march was produced by the Rollesbury brothers at Bacton, Suffolk. Some of the work was sub-contracted to the Vine family and Dunne family at Ixworth and Drinkstone nearby. The carvers, seated at benches, were guided by studying each others profile so we can sethe skilled carvers that made the roof. When the sections had been completed, the were taken over land to Bury St Edmunds and carried by barges along the River Lark to the Fen waterways and thence to March. They were assembled in the vicinity of the Church and winched into the purpose built clerestory.

The seven medieval guilds of March were financially involved and Sir Anthony Hansart and his wife Lady Alice were the instigators of this project. They are commemorated in the roof and Sir Anthony holds a document, the indulgence granted to March by Cardinal Wolsey. At the opposite end stand figures of St Wendreda the Peacemaker with two doves (her emblem) at her feet, opposite an image of St Etheldreda, foundress of Ely co-monastery in 773 ad. Many writers including Dorothy Sayers have mentioned the roof, stunning to behold, one of the two things that have made March famous throughout the world, the other being the town's former railway marshalling yards which were at one time the largest in Europe and for a brief period, the largest of its kind in the world.

A roof of international fame MAUREEN JAMESThe March woman who brings folk tales alive

You live in Cambridgeshire, so why have you written a book about Lincolnshire folk tales?I have recently been awarded a Doctorate on the Legends of the Lincolnshire Carrs, a group of stories that were collected in Redbourne, North Lincolnshire in the 1880s. My research involved looking at other stories from around the county and I wrote the book based on this. What attracted you to folk stories?I have been telling stories since 1999, starting off with history based stories. I have moved on to folk tales which often have historical roots and can also tell us a lot about social conditions in the past.Do you find the same themes going through Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire stories?Yes, they are often about agriculture and many of the stories are set within the flat landscape that, until recently was very prone to flooding. A story that is believed to have been found in both North Lincolnshire and the Fens is the tale of Tiddy Mun, a little creature ‘without a name’ who controlled the water until the drainage took the water away. How far back do you think the stories go?The Tiddy Mun story may go back to the seventeenth century drainage by the Dutchmen under Vermuyden, and been added to in the nineteenth century when the use of pumps, meant the flatlands were dry all year round. How long have been interested in history?I regained a love of history in 1985, firstly by reading historical novels, and then taking part in re-enactment events. I went on to study history at Cambridge, and since then it has been not just my hobby, but also a subject I write, teach and give talks on. What is your connection with March?I live in March, teach at Neale Wade, and I am also the Event Manager for the March Summer Festival. I like living in March as it has a good community spirit and doesn’t seem to have the big social divide that you find in other places. What are your plans for the future?I will be running a ten-week long WEA course on Myths and Legends of Cambridgeshire and the

Fens every Thursday morning from 16th January at the Conservative Club. I am also organising a storytelling event - Acclaimed Norfolk storyteller Hugh Lupton, will be telling the tale of John Clare at March Town Hall on 31 January. And my book of Cambridgeshire Folk Tales will be out in October. What relevance do folk tales have for us today? They take us back to a time when life was different, when stories created pictures in your mind, rather than a box in the corner of the room. The stories in the book are not great literary pieces, they have been written to be read aloud, and even to be told. I would love the readers to tell the stories to others… to pass them on…

Locality to run our Place - support & grants for at least 100 neighbourhoodsWe’re really pleased to let you know that Locality, in partnership with the Local Government Association and delivery associates such as the Community Development Foundation, will be running the Our Place programme funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government. This £4.3m package of support and grants will mean we can work with at least 100 neighbourhoods – improving areas informed by the people who know best – those who live there! This follows a successful pilot programme revealing the many and varied benefits to communities of joined up service delivery and shared/pooled/devolved budgets. For example - you could have a say over after-school activities for children, focus on large or complex services, such as adult social care or play a part in creating new jobs. See the My Community Rights website for success stories and how to express your interest in the programme. The programme is open to applications from 20 January 2014. So start thinking about what you’d like to see done differently, your partners and what they can bring to the project, resources you need and how we can help. We look forward to hearing from you.

Selecting the right Care Package Caring for an elderly or frail individual can be challenging. As the responsible person you want what is best for the individual – but accessing that help, having it delivered in the right way, in the right place and within budget can be a tricky affair. A good starting point would be to obtain Power of Attorney so that you can act for the individual for either or both areas of concern – their wellbeing and their financial affairs. It is important that any such arrangements are put on a proper legal footing, firstly in case things go wrong but just as importantly, data protection legislation can easily get in the way of well intentioned help. For example – it would be quite wrong of a bank or building society to discuss an individual’s financial affairs with anyone that was not legally entitled to ask for it, and the medical profession could not discuss medication, treatment or a prognosis with someone who has no right to the information. In my work as a later life adviser, much of the problem is not finding the services required, it is the paying for them. Some clients are ‘Asset Rich – Cash Poor’. This simply means that their income is not enough to afford the higher level of expenditure associated with long term care. However, sometimes they have a property that could yield funds – they just need a key with which to unlock it! Some solutions might involve Equity Release, sometimes a Care Home annuity might form part of a package. On other occasions my advice on claiming benefits, accessing specialist services and investment options is required. As a member of the Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA) I am fully qualified to advise in all these areas – the initial meeting is at my expense, if further work is required the associated costs will be fully explained before work commences.

If this is the case, how could any significant number of individuals make an informed decision? Many of my clients saw the Dispatches programme presented by Michael Buerk that highlighted how mistakes made when selecting retirement options cannot be undone if

circumstances change.

There are five key risks that need to be taken into account when choosing financial solutions to retirement: The impact of inflation on income, How long you will live, Changes in circumstances, Whether annuity rates vary and Investment risk. One way to reduce these risks is to talk through the options with an Independent Financial Adviser. Failing that – how would you know whether to combine a blend of those solutions I referred to earlier?

Legal Aid eligibility for Family and Children’s related matters

Advice from the expertsSue Pearson

Dack Pearson Solicitors

Christmas and New Year can be a difficult and volatile time for some families.

Following the legal aid reforms which came into force in April 2013 which impacted on the provision of legal aid in family matters, there has been a considerable misconception that

there is now no legal aid available to deal with divorce, finances and children’s matters. This is not the case!

The criteria by which a person is eligible for legal aid has been modified so that eligibility is based on certain merits, capital and disposable income. A common requirement to satisfy the merits criteria is where there is evidence of Domestic Abuse. There has to be an arguable case and evidence of domestic abuse within the last two years. Domestic abuse can be evidenced in a number of ways and does not need to consist of physical violence. It is not necessary to be in receipt of an injunction either, other evidence will satisfy this criteria. Where you require an injunction you do not need to satisfy any prior criteria for merits, the application for an injunction is sufficient to meet the merits criteria. The grant of an injunction by a court within the last two years will then satisfy the criteria for further funding of children’s matters, including contact and Residence issues as well as Divorce. Financial criteria must also be met, clients who are in receipt of universal credit and other passporting benefits will automatically satisfy the

income criteria. However capital savings will be taken into consideration. Proof of income and capital will always be required to support any application for funding. Another common area where legal aid is available is for care proceedings. If you have children’s issues which involve social services or you have been sent a letter confirming that that the local authority are issuing court proceedings in relation to your children, legal aid is available without assessment of merits or finances. It is possible for you to work and still be eligible for legal aid and provided you are within the financial limits (a contribution may be required) legal aid may be available. Where the issue is in relation to domestic abuse the income and capital upper limits can and usually are disregarded, although a contribution from income or capital may be required.

Should you require any further information please contact one of our offices.
