Travel insurance class actionALLIANZ Australia is facing a

potential travel insurance class action, based on testimony at the Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry this week.

Legal firm Bannister Law cited reports that more than two million “dud policies” had been sold to consumers, issued by Allianz as well as partner airlines, credit card issuers and travel agencies across Australia.

Bannister is alleging that Allianz provided “incorrect, misleading and false statements” on its websites, including descriptions

such as “unlimited” and “go anywhere” coverage despite caps of $1,000 for certain overseas medical procedures and policies excluding travel in areas subject to DFAT travel warnings.

“The Royal Commission has also revealed that Allianz has admitted its failure to report 46 serious breaches to the regulator, ASIC,” Bannister said.

The law firm is seeking to identify consumers who bought travel insurance through Allianz or one of its partner companies between Jun 2012 and Jun 2018, inviting them to register online for potential compensation.

Allianz has a wide range of travel insurance partnerships, including arrangements with several major banks, airports, travel agency groups and OTAs such as Webjet.

The new drug, which will be available on prescription, kills malaria parasites in the blood and liver, and can be used by adults 18 years and over for up to six months of continuous dosing.

QF ancillary revenue leadQANTAS Airways has been

cited as the top global network carrier when it comes to ancillary revenue per passenger, with the airline’s loyalty segment generating revenue of more than $1.5 billion in 2017.

According to the 2018 CarTrawler Yearbook of Ancillary Revenue report released this week by US-based consulting form IdeaWorksCompany, Qantas achieved a “stunning US$98 per member or almost US$39 per passenger” in ancillary revenue, with United the only other traditional carrier in the top 10.

Others in the cohort included LCCs Spirit, WOW Air, Frontier, Allegiant, Jet2.com, AirAsia X, HK Express and Wizz Air, which generally “aggressively seek revenue from checked bags, assigned seats and extra leg room

seating,” the report said.Interestingly, QF LCC offshoot

Jetstar only generated US$26.92 in ancillary revenue per passenger.

The Qantas strategy was cited as helping reduce risk, with income from the frequent flyer scheme more connected to consumer spending and the banking sector.

Qantas Loyalty generated more than 12% of the airline’s revenue.

Other QF ancillary income included $141m from retail, advertising and other property income, while the report cited Qantas internal analysis saying that 35% of local credit card spend is on QF co-branded cards.

JETLAGGED Aussie travellers in London can now take a quick nap in a new “sleep pod” facility.

Pop & Rest, located in the Shoreditch area, allows patrons to have a power snooze for £15 an hour, with the pods having dark walls, a special lavender fragrance to aid relaxation, plus ear plugs and an eye mask.

It’s the brainchild of 28-year-old Mauricio Villamizar, who is also targetting local workers needing a quick mental recharge after a big night out.

He plans many more pods, saying “coffee just wasn’t enough” to keep people going.

Bentours 2019 outBENTOURS has launched new

tours in Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Finland for the 2019 season.

Brand leader Ryan Bennett said the expansion included the new Discovery Route, an independent seven-day tour priced from $1,290 with daily departures between May and Sep next year.

There are also summer packages in Swedish Lapland featuring stays at the Ice Hotel 365 - more information on 1800 221 712.

Dorchester delightTHE Dorchester Collection has

today unveiled a new “Guest Care Program” for Australian and NZ guests, offering guaranteed early check-in and “Welcome to London” refreshments for stays at The Dorchester Hotel in London.

Late check-out is also available upon request, with the offer targetting long-haul travellers and offering a dedicated guest relations contact to help plan client stays.

Air NZ 787 route suspensionsONGOING repair work on the

Rolls-Royce engines on Air New Zealand’s Boeing 787 aircraft is being cited as a contributing factor to the carrier’s decision to suspend flights to Ho Chi Minh City and Tokyo Haneda.

On the Tokyo route, NZ will fly additional services to Narita during the upcoming Northern winter scheduling period, and the carrier will also maintain its seasonal flights to Osaka which are set to kick off next month.

Slot issues at Haneda mean the NZ aircraft spends a significant amount of time on the ground, whereas a 90 minute turnaround at Narita improves fleet utilisation and helps compensate for the 787 capacity restrictions.

The seasonal Ho Chi Minh City

route has been operated between Jun and Oct for the last few years, but will not return in 2019, with the carrier noting that customers wanting to head to Vietnam will be able to fly via Singapore or Hong Kong on alliance partners.

NZ noted that ongoing engine rectifications on the 787s are likely to continue impacting the fleet until late next year.

Cathay spells it rongCATHAY Pacific is making

headlines around the world for all the wrong reasons today, after a photo of a massive typo on one of its aircraft went viral on social media channels.

The “lettering mishap” (pictured below) saw the “F” missing from the word “Pacific” on one of Cathay’s 777s parked at Hong Kong International Airport.

To its credit, the carrier reacted swiftly, with a Twitter post on @cathaypacific saying “oops this special livery won’t last long! She’s going back to the shop!”.

CX later shared a photo of a worker fixing the mishap.

The incident sparked a range of online responses, including one commenter who asked “Does it say CATHAY PACFFC on the other side of the fuselage?” while Cathay itself also made a quip about the “limited edition” aircraft livery.

SYD traffic “solid”SYDNEY Airport witnessed

“solid” passenger growth during Aug, increasing 3.8% during the period, the latest figures show.

Domestic traffic in Aug increased by 3.3% compared to the prior corresponding period, outpaced by international passenger numbers, which were up by 4.7%.

“Nationals from Indonesia (+16.5%), Japan (+11.6%) and India (+11.3%) recorded notably strong growth, with those from South Korea (+10.7%) also contributing to the overall performance,” said Sydney Airport ceo Geoff Culbert.

“Overall international passenger growth was predominantly driven by the delivery of additional seat capacity,” Culbert added.

After Australians, the second top nationality travelling through Sydney Airport were from China (including Hong Kong), followed by New Zealand and the US.

JTB takes honours in Tokyo

JTB Australia took to the stage last night in Tokyo as the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) honoured the most successful incentive events to take place in the country over the past year.

As a precursor to the Visit Japan Travel Mart which starts today, the JNTO held its Japan Best Incentive Travel Awards for 2018 in which JTB Australia won for Best Community Contribution.

Other awards went to India’s Kulin Kumar Holidays for Best Creative Planning and to Taiwan’s Comfort Travel Service for overall Best Incentive Travel.

JNTO executive vice president Mamoru Kobori told guests incentives were becoming an increasingly important part of the country’s visitor economy.

“The Japanese Government is aiming to welcome 40 million more visitors to Japan by 2020,” Kobori said.

“Tourism in Japan is booming and the tourism industry has never received so much recognition for bolstering the economy and creating mutual friendships through travel.”

JTB was recognised for an event involving Australian representatives of a Japanese motor company, who travelled to Japan with their families.

JTB Australia general manager Kumiko Hardy said the group were “all very seasoned Japan visitors”, and so the islands of Okinawa had been chosen to present a fresh perspective on Japan and its history and culture.

CX pax up 6.4%CATHAY Pacific and sister

carrier Cathay Dragon carried almost 3.3 million passengers last month, with the figures showing an increase of 6.4% compared to Aug 2017.

Load factor increased 0.8 percentage points to 87.1%.

The South West Pacific and South Africa region recorded a 1% increase in passenger numbers to 1.407 million, with CX director commercial and cargo, Ronald Lam saying recent strong demand for premium cabins continued throughout the month.

However he warned that the significant typhoons that disrupted operations in Japan and Hong Kong this month would negatively impact performance.

“We are also closely monitoring external factors that have the potential to impact global trade,” Lam said.
